A court in the Hague ordered the Dutch state to pay compensation to victims of colonial massacres in the 1940s. After World War II the Dutch government sent a large military force to its former colony to suppress independence movements and restore colonial power. In so called ‘cleansing actions’, hundreds of civilians where killed. In the recent verdict, the court found that 11 men had been killed as a result of misbehavior by Dutch soldiers, mostly by summary executions. One man was randomly shot. Below is an article published by The Guardian An Indonesian man, who was forced to watch his father’s summary execution by a Dutch soldier when he was 10 years old, has spoken of his gratitude after a court in The Hague ordered the Dutch state to pay compensation to victims of colonial massacres in the 1940s. Andi Monji, 83, who travelled to the Netherlands to tell his story to the court, was awarded €10,000 (£9,000) while eight widows and three children of other executed men, mainly farmers, were awarded compensation of between €123.48 and €3,634 for loss of income. The cases concerned men killed by soldiers in the Indonesian province of South Sulawesi between December 1946 and April 1947 during so-called “cleansing actions” as the Dutch sought to repress moves towards independence. The court found that 11 men had been killed as a result of misbehaviour by Dutch soldiers, mostly by summary executions. One man was randomly shot. Monji’s father was executed on 28 January 1947 in the village of Suppa. More than 200 men are believed to have been executed by the Dutch military that day. Monji, who still lives in Suppa, said: “I’m grateful for the court’s ruling. I was 10 years old when I was forced to witness my father being executed by Dutch military after first being heavily beaten. I was crying. “I’m also grateful that I had the chance to travel to the Netherlands to attend the court hearing so I could explain the court what had happened.” Japan occupied the then-Dutch colony of the Dutch East Indies during the Second World War, and after its capitulation the nationalist leaders Sukarno and Hatta proclaimed the Republic of Indonesia on 17 August 1945. For the following four years, the Netherlands fought to prolong its 350 years of colonial rule of the country, often through barbaric means. The Dutch state had argued for the claims to be struck out given the time that had passed since the acts were committed. Liesbeth Zegveld, the claimants’ lawyer, said: “We’re pleased with the ruling. It wasn’t easy; it took eight years of proceedings. It’s a pity that the Netherlands government hasn’t been more forthcoming, as many of our clients passed away during the proceedings. “Nevertheless, for those still alive and all the families, the court’s recognition of their suffering and their entitlement to compensation is important.” The court recognised in its ruling that the sums granted the relatives of victims were “disproportionate” to the suffering caused.

Archbishop of Enugu Province, Anglican Communion, Most Rev, Emmanuel Chukwuma had scored Igbo leaders low for being self centered and selfish, saying that the leadership is in shambles. The Bishop, who spoke, yesterday, in Enugu, while privately marking his 30th anniversary as Bishop at Bishop’s court, pointed out that until Ndigbo trust themselves and bring out somebody as their leader and trust him and he himself will know that a trust has been bestowed on him, “we cannot move forward.” While regretting the “extreme marginalisation of South East from Nigeria”, Chukwuma, who thanked God for his mercies on him, urged national assembly members of Igbo extraction to come together in one voice and fight for a common cause to move forward. The Igbo leadership is in shambles, they have not shown good leadership in the sense that this is the only area where people don’t appreciate leadership. “We don’t have respect for the elders. The Hausa and Yoruba will have a leader and follow their leaders but Igbo, it’s difficult to really get a leader to follow because either followers don’t have the trust or the leaders themselves are self centered and selfish. That is the problem. “Until we are able to trust ourselves and bring out somebody who is a leader and trust him and he himself knows that a trust has been bestowed on him and try to be firm and sincere, we cannot move forward. “Look at the politicians from the southeast who called themselves leaders, they have never come together to discuss about southeast and together fight for it. “They are speaking individually. They don’t even come to their constituency to ask questions. Many of us don’t even know them or see a House of Reps member coming to address us. It’s a shame. 3' Archbishop Chukwuma Home » News » Igbo leadership in shambles — Archbishop Chukwuma Igbo leadership in shambles — Archbishop Chukwuma ON APRIL 30, 202010:43 AMIN NEWS By Chinedu Adonu Archbishop of Enugu Province, Anglican Communion, Most Rev, Emmanuel Chukwuma had scored Igbo leaders low for being self centered and selfish, saying that the leadership is in shambles. It’s a shame. “I glorify God today because I have legacies which I will be remembered with. I built a cathedral and bishop’s court in Bauchi and Enugu States respectively. I built St. Peter Cathedral in Gombe, hospitals and schools. “I had a serious challenge when I was in Bauchi, when my church and parish house were burnt down by mobs. My security man was killed and many other properties were destroyed. That was when I started building a cathedral and bishop’s court at the same time because I was living in a rented house. It was a very great task on me but with the help of Gen. Danjuma, Gen. Useni and many of the Christian generals in the Army, I was able to accomplish it. “In 1998, I was transferred to Enugu and was able get myself through from the conspiracy and challenges of achieving success by building a Bishop’s court, a cathedral and a congregation school “Bethel” at colliery quarters and created 12 Diocese which are under me.” https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vanguardngr.com/2020/04/igbo-leadership-in-shambles-archbishop-chukwuma/amp/

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council (OYC) has stated its position on the quest for Igbo presidency in 2023. OYC said after the coronavirus crisis is over, it will commence a persuasive approach and aggressive consultative negotiations. The body listed those to be engaged as President Muhammadu Buhari, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, ex-Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, APC national leader, Bola Tinubu. A statement on Friday by Okechukwu Isiguzoro, OYC President and Okwu Nnabuike, the Secretary, on Friday, warned power brokers, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and other stakeholders of the grave consequences of leadership imposition on Nigerians. It reminded of the need to respect “the gentleman’s agreement of rotational presidency between the North and South, The socio-cultural group said though the agreement is unwritten but must be respected for the future and sustainable peace”. OYC described Nigeria as a nation threatened by the personal gains of a few political leaders against the collective interests of the people. “Any attempt to ambush Igbos legitimate political interests to produce a President either from South/South or Southeast in 2023, will strengthen the agitation of self-determination across the country. “Oduduwa and Biafra referendum and independence will gather international recognition and make the future of Nigeria bleak.” The statement admitted that every Nigerian has the right to ascribe for the highest office in the land, but posited that collective interest supersedes the individual quests. OYC disclosed that it would approach former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, to lead the search for a unified Igbo presidential candidate ahead of the next general elections. “God has kept General Yakubu Gowon alive for the singular reason to cement the unity of Nigeria by facilitating the emergence of a Nigerian president of the Igbo stock in 2023, 50 years after the Biafra War ended”, it added. https://www.google.com/amp/s/dailypost.ng/2020/05/01/2023-ohanaeze-to-meet-buhari-obasanjo-atiku-tinubu-over-igbo-presidency/amp/

PericomaNwankwo:Before you call anyone a One Nigerian, reflect and use wisdom to first review your own position. By settling yourself into every village, how do you convince that you can get yourself an independent country? You have locked yourself tightly into Nigeria that a Biafra has become impossible.
