I like humbling bigots n tribalists on nairaland. Because I know most of them have not achieved much or contributed much to Nigeria. So I like to hit them where it hurts, their pockets! Remind them of their reality after the anonymous online facade wears off

Many of you are ignorant. Anyone that comes in nairaland to say he is a millionaire is either an aspiring millionaire....that is hoping to one day become millionaire.....or, has acquired other people money criminally.

There are very rich people here in Nairaland if i start to mention them you wouldnt even believe. When i say rich im talking of people who come here daily and act funny and ignorant....but in private life they manage huge wealth, from family inheritance and personal investments. You will never hear a boast of wealth from them. They are not emergency rich men. They came out of wealthy background and means.

So your so called dollar million means nothing here.

Let me ask you....are you aware Temi Otedola (Dj Cuppy's sister) is in nairaland? grin. She is incognito...but always active.

So shut up...you and your emergency million dollar. grin grin

I think many people missed his point.

What are the odds that a person in Nigeria would get suya delivery wrapped with a newspaper that featured his/her story and picture?

It is 1 in 200million, and Joe Abah is that lucky 1.

If you reshape the sample base and exclude non-public figures, the odd is 1 in X.

X being the population of just public figures, however many they are. He still won that odds!

It is phenomenal....and that's what he is trying to get across.

Anyone who succeeds a previous administration of a parastatal and has to scrap what his predecessor left, however much it was mismanaged, is himself a worse manager and administrator.

Namu is already revealing himself as bad administrator if he had to start all over.

Tunde Fowler came from the Lagos Management Structure. They have a tradition of successful sustainment. As much opposition existed between Ambode and Sanwo-Olu, the current administration did not scrap what was handed over.....he merely rearranged few policies and continued on.

That structure in Lagos is attestation to the competence and performance of all that graduated from it and are today dispersed into different political offices, Federal, State and Local.

Which structure did Namu come from, what shaped his political philosophy? Wherever it is should be examined, it will explain his deficiency in technocracy.

davidnazee:
Shut up and read more of real history from your uncle (history as it was on ground) not the speculations from scholars that tried to unravel the myths about Ife.
Enjoy reading...

No part of Ekiti was spared the agony of imperialist invasions…The rampaging Benin armies sacked Ogotun, Aramoko, some subordinate communities of Ijero, Ado communities such as Are, Afao, Ugbo (now Ilu) Omoba and Agbado and settled a large percentage of the haul of captives therefrom in Ikere, their garrison post.

Benin armies constantly waged wars of external aggressions on Ekitiland and other communities in different parts of old Ondo State in their quest for territorial expansion and control, among others. A good reference point is the Ado-Ikere relations that resulted to Benin pillage and attacks on Ado-Ekiti on several occasion. Olomola (1984:2-3) noted that Benin armies invaded parts of Ado kingdom a few times between 1500 and 1815.. Olomola further asserted that the Ewi actually devise a strategy of evacuating his capital city so that the Benin armies would not disturb the Ewi and the rest of his people in their new site.
Odo which was, before the Benin invasion a town of considerable size, broke up as the people sought the safety of rocky and forest recesses and Uyin and Igede lost part of their population in their fight against Benin in 1815.

The development of the Ado Kingdom was seriously affected by external invasion. These resulted in series of demographic upheavals with settlements constantly moved from one site to another. The most serious of these external invasions were by the "Edo" of Benin. They attacked and destroyed many settlements…in the Ado Kingdom… The Edos were invited by Ogoga, the third time the Edos were so invited to settle the quarrel between Ado and Ikere. The line of action they resolved to adopt was to bring all the villages under the ewi to Ikere, settle them there and in this way Ikere would be equal or even bigger than Ado. Ado would then be afraid of Ikere. The Benin soldiers came and sent words to the Ewi Aroloye… He refused to surrender. He did not in any way show that he was not ready for fight. Every town or village under him except Ijan were prepared to fight…

Every town or village under him (Ewi) except Ijan were prepared to fight… The Benin soldiers stormed Igbara-Odo and Ilawe and took them. At this time, Ado town had been vacated. Aroloye took the people to a place called Oke Oko Axis between Ifaki and Iworoko. Most of the gods Ado worshipped on that side: Olua at Eyio, Obanifon at Esure and Are, Ogbese and Orisala at Iworoko. The soldiers pitched their camps near Uyin (Iyin)…Ogbesi Okun, the then Oluyin …was conquered and killed. They proceeded to Igede, Awo and Esure and took them. The inhabitants of Igede then uder Okiribiti were driven in a north-easternly direction to a place called Oke Asha…Edo troops then marched to Iworoko…The soldiers entered Are…The same fate befell Afao. They were all taken to Ikere. The soldiers moved to Igbemo …entered Igbo-Omoba (now Ilu-Omoba)…The soldiers left Aisegba for Agbado and without delay took it and evacuated the people. Agbado was the last place under the Ewi. With the conquest, of Agbado, the soldiers seemed to have finished their job…’

Ewi Idagunmodo (1696-1710), Ewi Okinbaloye Aritawekun (1710-1722), Ewi Amono Ola (1722-1762), Ewi Afunbiowo (1762-1781), Ewi Akulojuorun (1781-1808), Ewi Aroloye (1808-1836) who reigned at Ado but were attacked successively by Benin hordes…‘During the reign of Ewi Aroloye, Ado-Ewi’s kingdom witnessed massive dislocation across the terrain as town dwellers and villagers ran for safety in different directions. Many of the captives from Iworoko, Are, Afao, Ugboomoba (now Ilumoba) and Agbado were taken to Ukere by Benin invaders’."[/b]

So my dear TAO11 you can see from the above article how the Edos subjugated you Yorubas.. We owned the Yorubas.. They were our subjects.. Only mistake we made was sparing Ife. We should have burnt it to the ground too..
When Ogedengbe came to sack Benin why did Oba appease him and begged for peace?

Why didnt Benin face and fight him?

You guys like to make claims you can't back up with credible evidence.

Benin is not interested in fabricated evidence.

Benin/Ife is a fabrication. Benin had no relationship with Ife till after 1824.
Im going to build a chronology for you.

1 - Oruh is a forest land, in it lived a disorganized and uncivilized people.

2 - Ife sent a corps of city-builders to put in order and civilization.

3 - The builders established a new order called Igodomigodo.

4 - Ife sent ruler called Ogiso to oversee the new state and sustain order.

5 - At a point in time disorder returned to the civilized city. Enmity and conflicts erupted and threatened the civilization.

6 - Ogiso council sent request to Ife to ask for intervention.

7 - Ife dispatched nd gave AUTHORITY to Oranmiyan to enter Igodomigodo and reform it.

8 - Oranmiyan went with a new set of Chiefs.

9 - Oranmiyan established a new order and called it Benin and ruled in Benin.

10 - Oranmiyan had a child in Benin. He returned to Ife, leaving his child and Chiefs behind in Benin to exercise his AUTHORITY.

11 - His child was crowned OMO N'OBA N'EDO.

12 - The lineage of Oranmiyan continues till today to exercise AUTHORITY of the reformer in Edo.

Omo n'Oba n'Edo!

Argue with this chronology.

Moreover, scholars have in present time come to identify the Ogane of d'Aveiros account as no other than the Ooni of Ife.

Igala attach itself as a proto-Yoruba language and culture. This is corfirmable and has been repeated many times by their Attah.

Nupe is from Igala.

Samuk,
Please focus on my last response and tell me why what Ryder said, and you shared here is of importance to Benin.

Again, if you compare it with what Acholonu said, there is a match.

Ryder's account is centuries ahead of Acholonu.

She also referenced a publication called Great Benin Classics where this origin of Niger-Benue is again documented.

This thread was a trap for you. TAO told you that much earlier.

A Reconsideration of the Ife-Benin Relationship1

Published online by Cambridge University Press: 22 January 2009
Extract

1 - The traditions now current among the Edo of Nigeria trace the origin of the Benin dynasty and the associated cire-perdue technique of brass-casting to Ife.

2 - Some of the information recorded by European visitors to Benin since the fifteenth century is not easily reconcilable with this tradition.

3 - Material evidence, especially that contained in the Benin bronzes, and the results of archaeological investigation have also raised difficulties.

4 - It is suggested that many conflicts in the evidence could be resolved by adopting a hypothesis which would ascribe a more northerly origin to the dynasty. The Nupe-Igala area straddling the confluence of the Niger and Benue emerges as the key area in such a reconstruction of Benin dynastic affiliations.

5 - The Yoruba States would seem to be related to the same general complex, but the chronology and direction of dynastic movements still remain obscure, and the seemingly fixed points of reference become far less certain when placed in context.
I have rearranged the above and itemized to give a direct relation in my responses.

1. The tradition is in Edo. Edo says the origin of their King is Ife. In addition, their brass civilization originated from Ife as well.

2. What European explorers reported when they visited Edo differs from what Edo practices.

If you look at these two you should see the contradiction and not be comfortable sharing it here. You should have a problem with European visitors giving false report about your ancestors and dismissing their traditions.

Do you not see it? Is it acceptable to you that Europeans pretty much said they know better than your ancestors on what their tradition should be? Thats a mindset of a conqueror.

3. European visitors examined your brass and dug up some artefacts. What they found did not agree with account and practices in Edo.

Were your ancestors lying to the visitors....or were the visitors pre-occupied in connecting your artefacts to River Niger by fire by force?

In that age Ryder wrote about, Europeans had a penchant for connecting seats of dynastic power with a body of water. In Europe dynasty and water were interlinked. Water was a common item in the origin story of civilizations.

These visitors met a REFORMED Benin and when asked about their origin they claimed Ife, instead of Niger Benue. These people have lost their senses....don't worry we will rewrite their origin and place it in Niger-Benue. grin

4. The way they concocted a new history for you is by assuming that you came from somewhere else in complete disregard to the tradition of your ancestors. This is what they meant by "hypothesis".

They reduced your custom to fantasies! They reconstructed the traditions of your ancestors....and you proudly shared this with me with gleeful joy and celebration.

I dont know about you dude. grin

5. They are not sure about the Ypruba States but to them its origin should equally have a water myth to it. They were not so committed to that but did not want to reveal their ignorance and lack of professionalism in field study and so just left that open.

Now, if you look at Acholonu's work, which I made available in this thread in my quest for the East, you will see why this thread was a deliberate mockery of your Benin superiority and deBarros error that your authority is obtained in East. TAO11 already revealed this to you. grin

Do you not see a connection in the Niger-Benue origin of Idu as told by Acholonu....and the Niger-Benue reconstruction of Ryder many centuries before?

Acholonu is retelling and re-living the hypothesis of European visitors that reconstructed your origin.

This reconstruction is what continues till today to confuse you and make you denounce Ife, the custom and traditions your ancestors practiced.

Historians don't need to cite Dapper to make the case that Benin was considered one of the most powerful states in the region, since multiple other accounts give a similar idea of the king of Benin's power. This kind of power existed before Europeans arrived and Benin's rise wasn't based on guns from Europeans - Benin didn't even have many guns until much later.

The quote is actually "the powerful and noble king of Benin", my initial post didn't have the order of the adjectives right.
Are you aware that Dapper was held as the authority on Benin history for a very long time?

Any writer on Benin who did not reference Dapper was not considered credible.

Does Dapper, the authority on Benin know where Benin is?

If Benin, the land of chaos and disorder, so bad that it needed a reformer....could soon after become REFORMED, prosperous. That credit is due to the intervention years ...centuries....earlier by Ife.

Would you disagree?

1. This is wrong and pretty much the exact opposite of the truth. Actually Benin was portrayed as a powerful state with a huge capital even in the early accounts. Benin really became powerful under Oba Ewuare, decades before any contact with Europeans.

A letter from the king of Portugal to the king of Benin in 1492 is addressed to the "powerful and noble king of Benin".

2. The Portuguese refused to sell firearms or cannon to Benin (in the late 15th century and 16th century) in any significant quantity because Benin was pagan and not Christian; it wasn't until the mid to late 17th century that firearms would have been very relevant, and Benin had a powerful state long before that. Actually even a mid-17th century European account noted that the Bini were not fond of firearms at all, and their soldiers didn't make that much use of them. By the 18th century however, Benin was even manufacturing some of its own guns.

3. Horses don't survive as long in the area Benin is in, and are just not as useful in that sort of environment, so the argument that Benin was a mainly infantry army rather than using cavalry like some states further north so this means it was weak is silly. In fact, Olfert Dapper records a victory by Benin over a kingdom "Isago" (probably a Nupe state, according to some historians) that had thousands of cavalry.

4. Benin exported guns to Yorubaland at one point, and exported mercenaries to parts of Yorubaland. This is a book by a Yoruba historian about the 19th century Yoruba wars. If I can recall it again, I'll post the source.
Please stop mentioning Olfert. Please.

Ijebu was the source of guns in Yorubaland.

Read Ijebu history and their knowledge of commerce. Their impact and influence in shaping the hinterland wars.

Anyone King of Portugal writes would be addressed as noble. That was just court manners.

King of Portugal wrote Oshodi Tapa, a freed slave, and addressed him like he would address Eshilokun, the King.

Actually, I just said that it wasn't relevant to the initial point I made and in the later post I said that he doesn't say where he got that account from. That's all. I didn't he say he was not credible about being told that account about descent. I'm sure somebody told him; it's just not clear who.
The point of descendancy, as far this thread and all the contributions pertain, is the most relevant of anything else. Far moreso than what is claimed to have been said by Alaafin.

The bottom line is AUTHORITY.

Who commanded authority, Ife or Benin....

That two line entry said a REFORMER.

Something was wrong in Benin. Someone needed to go there and set them straight. Reformer was sent.

The reformer did not go on his own authority ....he acted on a superior authority, to dispatch and reform Benin.

He left a child there.

He left with the child the authority (Yoruba call this Ashe) for reformation.

The Kings of Benin ever since have invoked and activated this Ashe to keep Benin reformed.

The Ashe with Oba Benin came from the authority in Ife who dispatched his ancestor, Oranmiyan, with the task to reform Benin.

This is the core of the whole argument. How can it not be relevant?

1842? No, slightly earlier though I get your point. But anyway, the situation is, if anything, the contrary. Lots of European written sources on Oyo are very much second or third hand and a few are even clearly just rumor and hearsay. Some of these sources, despite being not being based on direct European visits to Oyo are often plausible, informative or useful to historians despite that.

There were lots of biased accounts against Benin in the decades leading up to, and immediately following the 1897 conquest by the British so I don't know what you mean by "enjoying partiality". Multiple colonial sources are explicit in their condemnation of and criticisms of Benin, so I don't see that angle at all.
1824.
1842 is wrong!

The question of censureship is broad.

Relatively....Benin had a headstart with explorers. Much of what Benin is today are perceptions and falsehoods that survived those contacts.

The "Great" in Great Benin is a borrowing from foreing explorers. Benin itself has never demonstrated indigeneously sourced greatness.

Cannon fire gave Benin advantage over neighbouring groups.

If left to fight on horseback with swords and spears it could not by any imagination have been Great.

Oyo raised a cavalry after its conflict with Nupe. Ibadan remained indefeatable inspite of being at war with multiple opponents simulateneously, most of them more powerfully armed and with stealth.

Ijebu had guns, fulani came on horseback.

What Ibadan did is what greatness should be.

Great

It's not inadmissible. I never said it was, it's just not clear what the source is for that information, whereas the other information is attributed to an Alaafin.
Credibility test is given to witnesses in court cases.

You are applying credibility test to his testimony on descent.

What that does is it calls into question his claim about what he claims Alaafin said to him.

You are conflicting your points.

Now we have an hearsay
"Alaafin said..."

Is there a corroboration from an independent source, perharps Alaafin himself?
