A three-year-old boy, Emmanuel Samuel, died on Sunday after he fell inside a well in front of a building on Hassan Sule Street, Ita Oluwo, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos.The kindergarten pupil, his elder brother, Timileyin Samuel, and some of their friends were said to be playing around 3pm in the area when the deceased accidentally strayed into the well.PUNCH Metrolearnt that residents and officials of the Lagos State Fire Service, who came to the area after receiving a distress call, had difficulties rescuing the victim due to the depth of the well.Our correspondent gathered that a member of the Oodua People’s Congress later summoned up courage and went down the well to rescue the boy at about 7pm. He brought out the boy dead.It was learnt that the well was dug about eight years ago by the landlord of the building but was abandoned when it did not produce water.Some youths were said to have become angry with the landlord for leaving the well open. They reportedly stormed the residence and broke some window glasses.The landlord, Bamidele Ogunwole, was said to have been arrested on Monday after the incident was reported at the Ogijo Police Division, Ogun State.The family members of the deceased were still wailing on Monday whenPUNCH Metrovisited the area.Emmanuel’s mother, Kikelolomo, who spoke in tears, described the deceasedas her “everything.”She said, “He had brothers and sisters, but he was my everything. He was very intelligent and smart. It was his brother that rushed to tell me he had drowned.”The father, Sergeant Abu Samuel, said what pained him most was the fact that the landlord buried his child without his consent.“I was on duty when I was called that my son had drowned only to come back home and be told he was dead. To add insult to injury, that man (the landlord) buried my child somewhere in Agodo without my consent,” he said.Residents described Emmanuel’s death as avoidable.One of them, who identified herself only as Esther, said, “It is very easy for anybody to get trapped in a well that is left open like this. One of the man’s tenants told me that they had complained several times to the landlord, but he ignored them.”The lawyer for the family, P.O. Idogun, accused the police of “foot-dragging,” adding that no relative of the suspect had shown up at the police station.The Chairman of the community development association, Alara Ogodo, blamed the suspect for burying the child without the approval of his family.The Director, Lagos Fire Service, Rasaq Fadipe, confirmed the incident, saying “our men from Ikorodu fire station responded, but the child was brought out dead.”The Ogun State Police spokesperson, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, said the landlord had presented himself to the police.He said, “He is in our custody. We will do something about the case.” |

Professor of Political Economy, Pat Utomi, has said that the removal of fuel subsidy will not have negative impact on the country. Subsidy removal, according to him, will lead to competition and eventually bring down the price of the product. Comments Ade Okeke: It is so sad that Utomi could say this. I am sure we will not go far before finding another article where the same professor argued against subsidy. In fact, some years ago in Lagos, he protested against plans to remove fuel subsidy during the Jonathan administration. It is a sad day, indeed, for the scholar. Where does one now draw the line? For Utomi to rubbish his integrity on the altar of party politics is beyond imagination. ADVERTISEMENT I am not against subsidy removal but I hate the hypocrisy of job seekers who are calling for its removal just to please those in power. Sani Ahmed: Utomi kicked against fuel subsidy removal when Goodluck Jonathan was in power. Why is he now calling for its removal? He has not even referred to local refineries, maybe because he does not want to offend those who have built refineries abroad. Smart G: There is so much politicking about the subsidy issue. Its removal can be only when there is enough local production to meet the demand. When there are functional refineries, it will go naturally. Princegab Evans: Utomi’s comparison makes sense. He mentioned the necessary conditions needed before subsidy removal can take place. We should note that with the paradigm shift in anti-corruption war, it is obvious that Nigeria cannot sustain the subsidy regime. Bello Barriga: Why should people attack a messenger instead of the message? Utomi only delivered a message, which is the logical direction. The National Assembly should be addressing some of these issues. But they have rather chosen to engage in exchange of blows. They are not discussing ideas. People should appreciate those who are sharing their thoughts on the issues the lawmakers are avoiding. |

FORMER Niger Delta militants undertaking studies abroad under the scholarship programme of the Federal Government Amnesty initiative have lamented their unpaid allowances. They, therefore, called for urgent attention of the government to ameliorate their plights. The ex-militants also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately appoint a Special Adviser and Chairman of the Amnesty Committee to ease their sufferings, noting that the absence of a head in the amnesty office had increased their sufferings. The ex-militants’ complaints are contained in a communique issued at the end of their meeting at Birmingham City University, United Kingdom, and made available to journalists in Yenagoa on Saturday through electronic mail. ADVERTISEMENT The communiqué, signed by their Coordinator, Mr. Emomotimi Pius, regretted that similar programmes being funded by the Federal Government like the Petroleum Trust Development Fund were given special attention, while their allowances and stipends were paid promptly. The communiqué, which was co-signed by Elliot Yibakeni on behalf of students in Wales, and Raphael Frank on behalf of the students in Scotland, added that the students wanted a review of the programme. They said the review should take care of the lifespan of the running programmes, even as they rejected the collapsing of the programme with the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs. “The suggestion of collapsing the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs and the Amnesty programme into the Niger Delta Ministry or any bureaucratic bottleneck, supposedly at the expiration of the present subsisting amnesty proclamation by the end of this year should be discarded as it does not acknowledge the unique nature of the scheme. “But what is required is a fundamental restructuring of the Abuja and London offices and elsewhere. Idle minds and unproductive hands should be weeded away and students who know where it pinches most should have representatives in the offices, likewise for those that are engaged in other capacity building trainings and empowerment programmes,” they said. They also decried the idea of training students both outside the country and in Nigeria without any arrangement to gainfully engage them to contribute meaningfully towards the growth of the country. Urging the government at all levels to address the problems without delay, the students said the current government should creatively take steps that would pave the way for Nigeria to explore the bountiful human and natural resources that abound in the country. They said the absolute reliance on oil should be de-emphasised and the revenues generated from oil should not be expended on experimental ideas but on creative, result-driven and implementable ideas. The former fighters contended that such development would lift the country from its current state to an export driven and industrialised nation. They, however, expressed concern over the declaration of December 2015 as the end date of the amnesty programme. |

Juxtified:the 4gb space is going to be consumed by the linux. and installing linux doesnt remove the android os on your device. to boot the linux, you'll have to first boot your android phone and then launh the linux through the complete linux installer application. so you can switch between both operating system just wit the use of your home button. |

Juxtified:linux is an operating system just like windows. linux comes in different distributions otherwise called distros and if u like, u can call it version. these distros are made by different companies and each distro has it core functionality or do i say wat it was actually made for like kali linux was made for penetration testing, opensuse for servers and so on. linux has a better security implementation than windows which is why you hardly see linux users have an antivirus. why u may need it on your phone? linux is a powerful operating system and most of its functions come in the command line. u definitely cant learn all commands in a day. a phone is a more mobile platform dan ur laptop for you to increase.your knowledge about the os. hackers can carry out some attacks right from their phones, they dont have to sit at a place and b confined to their laptops can b ur own source of bragging rights among your peers....... reasons depend on u. 1 Like |

The watch worn by Mrs. Buhari on inauguration day is said to be a Cartier Baignoire Folle 18- Carat White Gold Diamond and costs N10,453,000. Does it really matter if Buhari's wife wears such a wrist watch because the president has been seen as a person who is not materialistic or are we being jealous or intoxicated by poverty? She runs her business and makes profit, I dont see why she can't buy that wrist watch. |
