well I will want to correct this notion that you think you know anything about me. While in an ideal world,all children are blessings from God,in an average Igbo community,a family must have a male child. Thank God for adoption because it has reduced the pressure of having a male child. Although some communities will NEVER accept an adopted child as a member of the community and will NEVER inherit a sand from the community unless it's bought and paid for by him or the parents. Example of such places is Enugu ezike. Go and make your findings. Things will change but until then, that's the reality we live in.

What we're discussing here has nothing to do with my personal convictions in this life. I'm just telling you about the society we live in. We don't live in an ideal world and the good and the flaws is what we're discussing.

The difference between us is that while you believe you have the ideal way of living a good life, I on the other hand understands the dynamics of the world we live in.

Life generally has no rules. Where your rights stops is where the next person own begins. Try to respect that without questioning their choices. Whether or not they will suffer the consequences of their choices,let them live it.

You pay tithes because you believe you're helping the church, I don't pay because I know the church is already wealthy. I also understand that the rich will always do what they want with their money and neither you or I have the rights to decide the best way to spend their sweats.

Story of one show off I did recently and the reason it pays to do big things.

When I started my house, some of the blocks were hand made on site. On one occasion, the tipper that was bringing the sand made a big pothole along the untarred public road across from the opposite neighbor, who is a carpenter in the village. He is younger than I am and has built a 3 bedroom bungalow. They are the big boys around. The next thing is, he came to warn the block makers never to follow that route again and said "his mates are buying blocks why can't he buy, na by force to build house" referring to me.

He only had the gut to take that action and be so disrespectful, to say what he said because all these while, he had the impression of me, that I am one of those not doing well abraodians. All because I was living a conservative lifestyle, it is called "see finish". They called me and told me. I did not take any action.
Fast forward to when the house got to roofing stage under a few months, they called me again and said he come and was pleading to have the wood work contract. He must has seen the extent of work and humbled himself.

I told them that if he enters the compound again, they should call police on him. That is how to shame your enemies. Don't make noise, just "show your work."

I learnt the lesson from my uncle. Massive 8 bedroom duplex with two bedroom boys quarter. Today, all the kids are in UK, Canada, Copenhagen, Denmark and Ibadan. The house was a beehive of activities in the 90s through the mid 2000 as family members visited in their numbers from the East.
Today, when one talks in the house, it echoes. His two gigantic Listers are packed in the generator's house, unserviceable. The house continue to dilapidate, except when the one that lives in Ibadan comes around, he tries to do some patchy work.
Those abroad don't stay when they come to Nigeria with family. The stay in hotel and visit. The house is no more conducive. The small Gen cannot carry AC .

Hajj, you can still repurpose it at the appropriate time if you want. Nothing spoil. It is still an asset.

what is important is whether or not your uncle enjoyed his time living in the house. If he did,it has served its purpose.

Whether or not people are living in it currently makes no difference to the patriarch who built it. He's gone and resting

I do not work to impress anyone

Let’s just say I do not work to keep up with the Joneses and in fact, I have no Joneses in my life

I am not comfortable with anyone feeling I am more than them or better just because of economic disparities


I work because God has blessed me with the physical and mental resources to be able to do my job
I work so that I can do my quota by paying tax to support the social welfare system that takes care of the have nots in the society and keeps our social infrastructure going
I work because we have achieved success in raising kids with the right moral values, kids not consumed with the idea of money, kids I can trust to be prudent with their inheritance
I work so that I can have enough for my needs and desires and have excess to be generous towards others, to be the reason why someone still believes in miracles
I work so that I can support my husband to create the utmost financial comfort for our family
I work so that I will not be dependent on anyone in my old age
I work so that our children will never have to worry about money
I work so that our kids do not lack and so that we can give them an even better life than we had
I work so that we can donate money to social causes like cancer research
I work so that I can buy any comfort I desire and splurge on overpriced luxuries when my husband agrees
I work so that I can pay a tithe to further the work of God’s church
I work so that I can invest to show our kids that in the end, it’s not how much you make, it’s how much you save
I work so that I can show my kids that honest labor can lead to rewards beyond the imagination and there’s never a reason to steal or cheat to make headway.

I’ll stop here but I will say that I’m not a typical Naija woman and my value system reflects that. I am not mother Teresa, I am not an angel but I am a simple person with simple convictions . You’ll see that most of the lines are inter-twinned.

has it occurred to you that some people have done everything you listed here and still have insane amount of money left and they legitimately made it too. So they can afford to splurge it on mansions,cars or very expensive vacations.


We're all different people. We derive pleasure in different things. Your source of pleasure might sound stupid to me but it's your money and your choice. Same goes here too

Why do people think that spending big on luxuries is a waste of money? I really don't understand some arguments here seriously.


It's possible to be legitimately rich and still want to have the good things of life.

During 2020, the world richest people added over $5trn to their collective wealth. Rolls-Royce made their biggest sales same year. Do you know why, the rich realized how quickly and vain this life is. There's so much you can invest. You as the person making the money deserves to enjoy part of it. You can't boil the money or cook it. You will rather spend it on what your neighbors and folks alike will call "showoff"

The truth is that if I had more money when I was building my house, I would have built a bigger building, because people expect us to build bigger to accommodate other family members. I am even surprised I am saying this, me, an advocate of financial prudence and someone who saved almost all my salary while working and who invested heavily back then.

But when it comes to building houses, my people dont spare anything to make a statement, especially those who suffered to make their money, especially those who grew up in hardship and the whole family slept in one room for many years, that big building is what will change the narrative, and it stays till I am long gone. I am also interested in my peace of mind while alive, I wont like to be thrown around because theirs no room for me to find solace at old age.

But I must also advice people not to rush into building village homes with investment funds, there are funds that must be invested for residual income before venturing into village retirement homes. Failure to invest before building private retirement homes will lead one to retire early, and sometimes into financial problems.

I don't care if my children maintain the house or even return to it, I care about myself for now, and the statement i made when i can, i care about the unlimited joy i feel whenever i wake up from this village house, because that's the real house i have, others could go but this is where i hope to return to, to die in, to be buried around and maybe to be hovering there afterwards (if there's anything like that)

My father built a house, I left it and built mine, if my children dont build theirs, it's their own concern, not mine. In the place I come from, people periodically bring their children home to the village to show them around. Show them the farms, the streams, the local markets and other village customs.

I will forever support honesty and integrity in all business and in everything in life, I can never support people doing crime either in this country or abroad to build houses in Nigeria.

Someone paid $11ml just to visit edge of space. This journey took less than fifteen minutes and na so money take fly. People pay thousands of dollars just to sit in front of a favorite NBA game and boxing matches. That moment of happiness is the only thing they're taking to their grave and nothing else.


I will leave my papa house to build my own. My children are expected to leave mine to build theirs. I will make statement with my own house no matter how little or big it is. I will grow old and hopefully die inside the house. I also hope that I am buried there too. IT IS MY HOUSE.

I fell into same situation too when I built my 7 bedrooms ensuite duplex. All my children and grand-children are born abroad, although I have introduced them to Nigeria life but I still dont see them coming to live in Nigeria with all these happenings. But I have learnt from my mistake o; all other builds are not this big anymore. God help us.

here's the thing. We're Igbo people. Our children will always return home and will try to outbuild us. I have been to many people homes from this thread, you will put a respect to their name.

If I get money today, I will build a modest bungalow for old age but you see MANSION, I must build it. It can waste after I die for all I care. But I must have it to my name. You see red cap and chieftaincy title,it must be added to my name. Have you listened to any osadebe or Oliver decoque? Someone is called

"Mkpuogiriga 1 na umuoji". This person can't stand up in his community and you make noise. At the end of it all,all these are the reason we work hard to make money. Many people have enough money to live modestly till they die but they went that extra mile to become wealthy. It might sound vain but then, everything else in life is vain

Cultures have the distinct ways and values. In Igbo land, ones compound (Obi) is his heritage and that make it a valued sacred treasure. Most cannot be bought with any amount of money, The thought of even giving it out is sane.

that's why the birth of a male child in Igbo can not be overemphasized.
