Pakingzzz:Have you send me the email? You need to show more to get the investment. I am under no illusion that 1mill is not enough. Engineering projects are try and error with endless iterations. Do you have any cotingency plan? E.g components blowing up etc. You are of the assumption this would work the first time, which is highly unlikely. I believe you are a smart person, as not many Nigerians will have the creativity and initiatives to come up with this idea. You need a proposal. |

Career / My Secret Tips For A Career Success. Also Suitable For Jobseekers. by micktoxin(m): 10:26am On Apr 25, 2015 |
Over the past few weeks, I have been approached by university-aged guys, asking the age old question: how to succeed in xyz jobs with what you might call - a less than perfect education background and experience. This has given me the chance to reflect a bit on my admittedly short career (6 years since postgrad). What have I done right? Where did I trip up? What would I change? Though success in business or a career can be argued, ‘obvious’ or to a certain extent common sense, but they are so often forgotten. If you ask me, anyone with the right knowledge and attitude can make it regardless of the situations, cue Nigerian juju. That said, here is my opinion. You can find some of my background in a couple of my previous posts, but to briefly rehash: I did my underground in a well-respected university, and my postgrad (D Phil) in a world renowned university. Racked up huge amount of debt from student loans and started in the back office of a middle market bank. Despite the discrimination and the competition, I busted ass (God knows how many 100hrs/wk) and landed a job in a top tier firm and within a few years was promoted to where I am now. Here’s how I did it, in no particular order. 1. Sorry for the clichés, but you got to maintain a sense of perspective. Family is the most important thing-everything else is secondary. 2. Stay focus on your goals and steps. Don’t set an unrealistic goals that are way out of reach in the short or medium term. Maybe you will be a multi-millionaire by the age of 30, maybe not. For bankers-I.e. hedge fund manager at 40, maybe not. What matters is you getting a relevant job and focussing on improving yourself-then the next step. 3. Never get discourage. Most often at work, there will be some cynics or naysayers who will doubt you. Use them as motivation, and set yourself goals to prove them wrong using the right attitude. Remember nothing is impossible. 4. Be diplomatic. Never sh!t on anyone, no matter how much they piss you off. Don’t go around sending rude emails to co-workers, clients or anybody. 5. Respect your bosses or the admins. FORCE yourself to appreciate their works, and display it. Send them a merry Christmas cards, wish them a birthday etc. It is the little things that counts. Your attitude towards them, can sometimes make-break, or slow down your career progress. 6. Be real. When your career starts to take off, don’t step on anyone to get to the next level. Most often, it comes back to bite you. 7. (Cliché) Never forget your background. Remember where you came from, and keep your feet on the ground. If you are too cocky, you might find yourself isolated. 8. Be extremely driven by success. Excellence should be the focus. Good has never been good enough(Never will). 9. Be ethical. Nigeria-Enough said. Nigeria has enough bad rap in the media. Please don’t go and f$ck it up more than it already is. In addition, it is most likely to black list your career. 10. Get a career mentor. Find someone that believes in you, and make them take a risk on that kid with humble background. Validate their decision by proving them right. 11. Be extremely coachable. Coachability is rooted in personality and character, so improve thor traits. 12. Be proud of your work. Failure to take pride in your work means you are in the wrong line of work (IMO). 13. Keep your head up. As with most careers, there will be some days, weeks, months when things totally suck. Persevere and ride it out some more, it often gets better. Your career is in your hands. 14. If you are not married yet, go to wherever the firm needs you. Okay, unless it’s in boko haram region, then fear for your life. 15. Don’t complain. Remember that quote about ‘whiners being left in the dust’ and all? 16. Be as loyal as is reasonable possible to your firm. Even with an offer of 50% more elsewhere, ride it out if your career is moving along title wise. Most companies tends to reward commitment. 17. Have a can do and go getter attitude. You need to go above and beyond what is expected. Don’t be shy and don’t be an extreme ass kisser. There is little or no advantage to both. 18. Lastly, when you start to make it in life, you might find yourself with less friends. Don’t sweat it. It means they were not your friend, just a colleague. Equally, you might find fair weather friends and gold diggers, play your card right. However, keep your real friends close, as you will always need them in future. The lists presented, have been working wonders for me. Hopefully it can help someone’s career out there. Any other shared experience (Ajanlekoko, cowleg and co), objections or question from graduates or young/experienced workers will be welcome. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Pakingzzz:Wrote a long email. Not sure where it went. I have emailed you addy anyways. A couple of my concern. The need for Patents and the level of automation required. As you probably know, this is a precise oriented task (To a few mm). What you have presented so far, is a top level architecture of the project. Please send me a business proposal detailing a more realistic cost breakdown and technical analysis. Some of the detailed costs, will include controls like FPGA, Motors etc. Another clarification, do you intend to build a house prototype with 1mill? This is definitely needed before showcasing the ideas to other investors or even selling it. I have people into robotics and automation, but still need more information. Best wishes. |

Common sense, really. Anyways, with the threat of global spare capacity exceeding 8 million barrels per day, OPEC will lose even more price control, thus resulting in sharp drop in crude oil prices. Nigeria better start readjusting, because Saudi guys are not bluffing anytime soon (At least another year). What an oily mess. 2 Likes |

missclasssy:I think it's the same old argument why women prefer social courses to sciences courses. Different interest and all that. The same argument could be made of women superior language skills to men (on average). It is very complex to determine which of the sexes (Never mind in Nigeria) are more intelligent as shown In 2012, when women scored an higher average IQ test than men. Although in the high range, my own observation to date is that at or above the 98th percentile there are about twice more males than females, while at or above the 99.9th percentile there are about 15 times more males. These estimates are based on the male/female ratios in certain high I.Q. Until we can accurately measure intelligence then we might not get the full picture. 1 Like |

MrsChima: MrsChima it shows your husband is intelligent verbally and you perhaps even more so, but like I said earlier to another poster, intelligence is a combination of many things. Most people in top Universities with advanced degrees (especially in maths and physics) are known to lack communication and social skills. I am sure you have met geeks who can't hold a normal convo to save their lives. Will you say they lack wisdom or intelligence (not fair)? P.Dirac, arguably the greatest scientists after A.Eistein was known to suffer from poor communication skills and wit, but yet still discovered the greatest quantum theory of this century. We can all think of people that have poor reasoning and brilliant memories, or fantastic language skills but aren't so hot at reasoning, and so on. Knowledge is a fancy name for the conditioning we have been subjected to. Wisdom is something that you start to have once you realize that it was just conditioning. Intelligence is is a measure of how well you can use your intellect to help yourself deal with the situations that you are confronted with in life. |
Romance / Re: Are Nigerian Guys Wiser And More Knowledgable Than Nigerian Ladies. by micktoxin(m): 5:33pm On Apr 20, 2015 |
Most people don't seem to know what intelligence is, and are wrongfully assuming anyone with poor communication skills lack intelligence. so I need to post again(Probably start a thread later after work). Intelligence is a cumulative addition of three main things, Namely; short-term memory, reasoning and a verbal component. Anybody that can't hold a decent conversation is simply lacking in verbal intelligence, which doesnt make him/her leas intelligent overall. Verbal ability involve; Reading, writing, speaking. Socially speaking, most physicists are known to lack a certain level of social Verbal intelligence, of which MrsChima think constitutes to overall intelligence. Technically speaking, they are still very intelligent (even verbally), all it means is that they lack social verbal intelligence. Most highly educated people with advance degrees like maths and theoretical physics are very intelligent but lack social verbal intelligence, which must not be mistaken for overall intelligence. I think the ability to come up with innovative ideas and insightful questions is only as powerful as the ability to convey them. Most great minds have always find a way to get their idea across, which shows a good/decent (Maybe not excellent in social term)verbal ability. According to historians, when P. Dirac (often referred to as one word per hour) met Niels Bohr in Copenhagen, he grumbled to Ernest Rutherford, "This Dirac, he seems to know a lot of physics, but never says anything." Neils also complained about P. Dirac of not knowing how to finish a sentence of which his reply was "I was taught at school never to start a sentence without knowing the end of it . My point is, communication skills is just part of Verbal ability. I think 'exceptional(far and few between)' doctors, physicists and engineers from top Universities are more likely to be more intelligent than someone from just any universities. Therefore next time you talk to someone unable to hold what might appear to you as intelligent talk, ask yourself this, Does he lack social verbal intelligence or technical verbal intelligence? If they lack both, then there might be a problem. 5 Likes 1 Share |
