While I agree that we need to diversify the economy, there is nothing spectacular that Emirates did that has made them to keep their head above the water other than robust management of their earnings. Our problem has been the looting of our earnings with reckless abandon.
Not spectacular? Maybe not for UAE for various reasons I don't have time to go into. However, this is the income breakdown for Dubai, which is the second largest economy in UAE after ABUDHABI.
Real estate and construction (22.6%), trade (16%), entrepot (15%) and financial services (11%) are the largest contributors to Dubai's economy.
Considering oil and gas revenue, with the exception of investment from UAE, was responsible for 80% of Dubai's income in the early 90s, if that's not spectacular I don't know what is. Dubai has been one of the diversification success stories of the 21st century.

We don't need the UK/England model. A fiscal federalism model will open competition among states of the Lower Niger Region and South Western region, while the Northern region will want to prove some point. It is very healthy for our development and will mitigate most of these recurring situation
London was just an illustration of how much a city can carry a country if a proper investment are made. I read an article saying Lagos economy in gdp (current 90) should have been around $250 bill (Aprox half of current Nig gdp), if the government had decentralised and given lagos state more power 10 years ago. UK is one of the most centralised in the developed world, local council can't even make their own laws, which is the opposite direction Nigeria should be following. Nevertheless, while it's true fiscal system will benefit the whole state, it still needs to focus on large cities or countries in the case of Eu (See Eu fiscal policy) to function properly.

My brother, diversification of the economy is good but don't you think that the government should empower states via fiscal federalism and resource control to tackle the ever growing economic challenge? We have a situation where all the burdens of the 36 states and 774 LGAs rest on the shoulder of the center, this is in addition to the responsibility of the Federal Government. This kind of system create room for Lazy administrators at State and Local level, and also encourage mismanagement. Nigeria can't continue this way and expect significant progress.
Each state should be declared independent and allocated a start up fund like USA did before world war 1.In hindsight, if the government had done that like 10 years ago, economies of states like Lagos state would have developed to three times what it is now.
I don't understand why Nigerian government is not even doing this? In fact many foreign investors will flock into lagos, because it offers less restrictions.
We have too many deadwood states like ekiti and osun, and many more in the north who contribute nothing into the economy. By following USA model, every states will be forced to think and invest wisely in their own states.
There are lots of states going bankrupt in USA of which the central government haven't offered to help them in US, as this will be at the detriment of states with great economies.
In most western world each country improve their best performing states. If you go to England you will realise London contribute more than 30% into the United Kingdom economy. This is because they keep developing London to compete with other mega cities like Newyork and Hong Kong.
Lagos and other big states should have gone really far, the federal government is definitely holding them back.

Nigeria should have follow the footstep of countries like Emirate and diversify long time ago. Oil prices will hover around $60, as any increase will be stopped before it gets off, due to fracking. So Nigeria better start investing in Agriculture, education and Tech start up companies like India and others are doing.
Oh.. subsidy should be stopped. Anybody with a common sense know this is now unsustainable.
Edit. Electricity should be among the main agenda, as it is one of the biggest reason foreign investors are not coming into the country.

That makes logical sense if you think about it. Sort of gave a disturbing insight into the average IQ of Nairalanders.

Foreign Affairs / Re: Oil Sells For Over $60 P/B For The First Time Since November!!! by micktoxin(m): 10:01pm On May 05, 2015

Like reports have been insinuating for weeks now, "oil prices want to rise."
And finally it has!
For the first time since oil prices took a nosedive in November 2014, the price of oil has finally gone above $60 per barrel.
It seems there's hope afterall for Nigeria, especially as it has been commended for how it managed the economy in spite the fall in revenue.

I don't think this is the beginning of a new bull market for oil. We are just defining the new range, which is much lower than the old range. Frackers will open up the floodgates again should prices rise, the Saudis aren't going anywhere, and it is likely that Iran will be back in the market in a much bigger way after the nuke deal is signed (unfortunately for everyone imo). Prices got too low too quickly, and they have bounced just as quickly...but from here, material increases in price will be met with increasing supply and less demand. In London where I live, the petrol market is totally out of control now..with prices of £1.18 per litre (unleaded) common in the most areas. Combination of the unknown cap/trade tax, lack of refining capacity in Scotland, and occasional labor strife. But overall, we should be in a new range for a while I imagine.
This will only get worse(even more so for Nigeria), and there is no way the country can stay afloat without borrowing from China.

Politics / Re: Jonathan Has Ruined The Economy, APC Governors Cry Out by micktoxin(m): 7:06pm On May 05, 2015
spako4:
ABUJA – Old and incoming governors elected on the platform of All Progressives Congress, APC, have accused President Jonathan of running the economy aground, leaving them with an empty treasury.

The governors under the umbrella of Progressives Forum also stated that the president-elect, General Mohammadu would be faced with unprecedented financial challenges as he takes the mantle of leadership from Jonathan on May 29.

Chairman of the Forum and Imo State Governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha made the revelation, Tuesday, after the governors paid a congratulatory visit to Buhari on his electoral victory in Abuja
Okorocha said that the non-payment of April salaries by the federal government was an indication that the economy was in ruins.
Details soon.

D'u support a rematch tho? Pac had a shoulder injury during his training and he wasn't allowed to take his pain meds before the fight.. D'u think this may have affected his fight? I was rooting for him..
This is the first time I am hearing shoulder injury. In which case I support a rematch. I think it could go either way in the rematch.

I also think Mike is right here....it takes much more than arrogance, wealth and hopping around the ring to b a legend. I was super bored while watching his fight with MP.. undecided

I agree it was underwhelming. I blame pac for it tho, as most people already knew that was how floyd will fight by running around the rings. He could have been more aggressive.
