Aviation Research Centre (ARC) India used to operate two Boeing 707-337C SIGINT platform in its inventory. They used the aircraft as a Strategic Surveillance Airborne System (SASS) to look deep into the enemy’s territory and gather intelligence.

The B-707s were last used during the Kargil conflict for ELINT operations. These aircrafts played an instrumental role in identifying enemy positions in the mountains and intercepting/ jamming enemy communications while flying at high altitudes.

I'm still mad SAAF retired these without replacing their capability.

The SANDF will never have the budget to use Ingwe's for fire support. Even in the old days, very few ZT3's were shot during training.
That's why you need a cheap bomb slinger to do fire support. As good as a 30mm is, it will never be very effective against bunkers buildings etc.
Just doesn't have the volume to carry enough HE for the job.

But shouldn't that role be put up as part of the requirements for a new light armour vehicle for the armour guys not infantry. Putting the 90 on the Badger would the deny the future armoured brigade a chance to have a light armour capability.

The weapons(EMAK-30 an SS-77) on the Infantry variants would be there to provide sustained fire to cover own troops and vehicle movements , cause enemy troops to lay down their heads while own troops advance, destroy or disable enemy APC, tanks, IFV, Trucks, technicals etc.

Anyway! The only aspect of fire support I'm worried about for the mechanized infantry is that it seems there's no replacement for the Ratel-81.

Tanks led to the extinction of self-propelled anti-tank guns the extinct cousins of modern self-propelled howitzers. They couldn't even be used as the infantry's direct fire support weapon cause of technogical advances in air power.


I can imagine the insul....ts if the crew spotted a tank or any vehicle and were trying to set up the gun to fire.

FYI Arjun based SPGH are operated by artillery units not Armour units

I know but they'll be the artillery component of a manoeuvre force requiring them to keep up with the high mobility of the force.

Mounting howitzer on the same chassis will enhance/simplify stuff like maintains meaning the artillery component doesn't have it's own tail(different logistics needs than the supported force) as it is already the arm which requires heavy logistics than others e.g Infantry.

Against an opponent with counter-battery radar, long range base bleed and rocket assisted projectiles and other targeting systems makes to go for the traditional counter-battery protected turrets. As open or towed howitzer crews might take a beating as many will use 155mm projectiles with submunitions or Insensitive munition to carpet bombard the location tracked to be the origin of fire.

the thing is, there r so many factors in play specially when 2 countries r involved , that it turns into a quagmire if due diligence is not shown.
