You can watch Britain's Who Wants to be a Millionaire and compare with the Nigerian version for some answers to your question.
Cheers.
That doesn't answer the question.

I've never watched either.

Have you checked our HDI ranking?
What is the % of school enrolment for all our children, tap water, good roads compared to 1980?
Meanwhile outlook for society well being is different from individual prosperity.
Please note.
Literacy for many parts of southern Nigeria was below 50% - the average is now well over 50%.

Infant mortality rates were far higher than they are now.

Nutrition was formerly an issue under British colonial rule - it is far less of a concern now.

Maternal mortality rates were far higher previously. The number of doctors per patient has dropped from what is was previously. Likewise the proportion of midwives to mothers.

There are lot more paved roads than there during the colonial era.

Average earnings are higher than they were during the colonial era.

In summary, whilst things seem bleak they have actually improved noticeably since independence. Some people have painted a rose tinted image of an era that was anything but.

And for all you people who keep quoting Lugard's foolish quote as if the man was wise - do you ever ask yourself why a man such as himself found himself in Nigeria and wasn't kept close to the British establishment in Westminster?

Africans have not improved our outlook on life, since Lord Lugard wrote the observation below
The stats are there for all to see but you keep telling yourself that a foolish man who pushed the peoples of southern Nigeria into a union with misguided Islamists spoke logically or reasonably.

When some people said Africans cannot lead themselves we shouted "racism". How come we always have this kind of situations since 1960? How much progress have we made? Even some GRA's abandoned by the colonial masters in the 60's remained the best part to live in in some state till date.
Because this happens in the north doesn't mean that Africans cannot lead themselves.

As much as you might want to fall back on our self-hatred the facts are that Nigeria is in a better place now than it was in 1959 - the literacy rate is higher, the poverty rate is lower, average earnings are higher, the infant mortality rate (whilst still too high) is lower and the further south you go the better the stats are.

The problem here is the North and the unwillingness of the masses to hold their leaders (religious and secular) to account for the various crimes.

I hope they would not assassinate this Emir like they did to his predecessor.

He has been scolding the Muslims for some time now. From child marriage to building of mosques to tolerance. Something the supposed leader of Nigerian Muslims in Sokoto would dare not do.

If only more Emirs and clerics took Sanusi's position, Nigeria would be like Jerusalem where Muslims, Jews, and Christians live in the same city with huge populations and there is not inter-religious conflict.

-Lord
Jerusalem exists within an apartheid state that persecutes the native Muslim population.

It is one of the prime flash points of discrimination and inter-religious conflict on the planet, not just between Muslim and Christian but also between the various Christian groups - such is the division that Muslims keep the keys to some of the prime Christian tourist sites.

What is 'progressive' about Buhari? A man who was calling for Sharia not so long ago.

A man who claimed that to attack Boko Haram would be to attack the north?

A man who has routinely refused to speak out against the Fulani killers who insist on slaughtering innocent farmers whose only crime is to dare try and protect their land from being destroyed by wandering cattle?

While African leaders have been largely useless it is the average African citizen who is to blame for this.

When people have children with no regard as to how they will cater for them or without creating an environment for them to thrive the result is devastation.

It shouldn't be a case of one or other, all three are necessary.

I can't believe anyone can actually post anything as senseless as what u both jus posted in d name of lauding d move...
Do u have to bootlick every move no matter how irrelevant, insensitive and hopeless it is? How is launching a satellite a priority in a nation suffering huge infrastructural deficit, recession and many other challenges a laudable move and even considering it's going to be done using A LOAN!! Of what use is a satellite in space when there's no steady power to use it. Of What use is a satellite in space now considering the precarious state of the nation? To d slowpoke asking if ppl can go online without satellite, did u launch anyone before to b enjoying these services now? How can some of us intentionally b stupid jus in d name of blind support? It is more and more obvious these days dat some of us are actually our own problems and not d govt.
Communications isn't a vital part of infrastructure?

You take 550million USD loan just to launch satelliteshuh

Is that Nigeria's problemshuh

-You won't take loan to build a 2nd Niger bridge,
-You won't take loan to subsidize the price of foreign rice,
-You won't take loan to build more refineries,
-You won't take loan to build more hydro dams that will generate electricity.

Who for Nigeria that satellite epp abeg?

Clueless government.... pikin never grow teeth but e wan chop boole.

Devil punish APC.
Communication is vital to business.

While I am no fan of the APC government or this minister in particular launching satellites for this purpose is perfectly understandable.
