mapet: 1. The govt voted more to capital expenditure than her predecessors, is that false? You should be in better position to refute if they are not spending on capital expenditure, as 2016 performance window closes in March
2. Are you still asking a question on criteria? Are you telling me that you go into argument without reading? The reports stated exactly the modalities of how these people are selected yet you still bother to ask a question that the answer is obvious Which budget are you talking about the padded non-budget of 2016 or the 2017's inflated budget in which the recurrent expenditure is still greater than the capital expenditure? As to the free money that this government is handing out the article claims that there is 'Community Based Targeting' - those aren't a list of criteria, I'm asking you since you speak with such certainty about this matter. |

mapet: .....and capital expenditure of what exactly? Is capital not currently being addressed or has this government not increased the votes on capital spending more than their predecessors? They have? Can you show me evidence of said expenditure? Have you actually looked at the budget? And why did you duck my question on criteria? How are they identifying the qualifying parties? |

mapet: 1. You still don't get it. Nobody claimed to need 5k. The government is giving the 5k as a safety net. In order words, the government is giving cash incentives to alleviate their conditions, while getting them to buy into government interventions in health (immunization) and education (school enrollment). How do you want to teach your suggested "basic education" when in the first place these people are "disincentivised" and "disempowered" to make it to schools or primary health centres. How do you want to give "basic education" when it makes "immediate sense" to some to send their children out to hawk on the streets rather than go to schools. How do you want to give "basic education" when some families has to go out each day to hustle for daily meal?
2. On the value of Naira, you lot are just looking at the wrong paradigm. To these people in question, the Naira/dollar exchange means squat. But if you sat down to understand the interconnection and basic economics, then you will see that the cash to be given to these people cannot be deemed "assets", rather they are stimulants to reflate the economy and get cash to move in the system. Who told you government "hoarding" the cash will automatically translate to improvement in exchange rate? If government cannot not increase the spending power of people at this critical times, how do you want to help commerce? Where did I even suggest that government should hoard anything? The money should be used for capital expenditure. This is no better than the policy of creating more government jobs and wasteful, inefficient recurrent expenditure. Why is the federal government having to involve itself (again) in the basics of primary education, primary healthcare and immunization? What are certain states/local governments doing with the budgets that they receive for nothing? You speak as someone who has some insight into this project - do you have a list as to the requirements that makes one eligible for this scheme? How did/does the government decide who the 1 million most impoverished/deserving are? |
Politics › Re: Nigerian Government Starts Paying N5,000 Every Month To Poorest Citizens by mmsen: 3:17pm On Jan 03, 2017 |
mapet: I disagree with your position. You do not need to wait for your "proper census" before this intervention can start. What you call proper census is probably 10yrs away, are you now going to wait that long before you introduce necessary social interventions? Do you wait to have "proper census" before you start intervention programs like immunization, family planning schemes, community development aids etc?
What has been done is to adopt an ingenious approach to data collection, verify the same data collection approach with international standards as verified by world bank and commence intervention with such, while you improve on data collection with time If you want to help these people who claim to be in need of 5k then provide them with basic education - everything from literacy, to civics, to sexual health education. This is just a way for the same idiots who have been short changing these people to continue to do so. And what sense does it make to hand out a depreciating asset in the form of hard currency when this government has done such a woeful job of maintaining the value of the naira? Again, save this money and use it towards something more constructive than handouts. |

After all if one doesn't steal and become wealthy in this country even street boys won't celebrate them, so why won't they continue to embezzle? #peanutsatwwork. In Fela's voice : "suffering and smiling" State officials will always use their position to improve their financial status. That is unfortunate but human beings are rarely altruistic. Anyway, I'll take this man over 99% Nigerian governors, past or present. The only one who comes close is Donald Duke - it seems that corner of the country has Nigeria's most progressive leaders. |

Him being 'educated' and 'close to the youth' is fine but what makes me like the man is that he is productive unlike Buhari. People whinge about the stadium but it's a talking point for Uyo, it's good PR. The roads are great, basic healthcare is free from what I've seen. Improvements have been made in education. I would have less of an issue with Buhari if he was productive, the simple fact is that he isn't. |

Smh for misplaced priority. Since forever, unfortunately. Remember how the previous federal administration had to build schools for the north because the state and local governments there refuse to do so. |

Bolustic: Don't look at the northerners alone, what about the myriads of baby factories in the east? We have to stop this culture of terming everything from the north as negative, this is 2017.
Large population, if well managed, is a always an advantage, China and India are successful examples. BTW, how is the SS, despite it's oil and low population, compared to the north, better off? The south-south is a lot better of than the north in every indices - education, health, household wealth. As to you using China and India as examples of large populations - the Chinese had to curb their population growth for the citizens to even begin to feel the growth of their economy. India on the other has refused to stem its ridiculous population growth and remains a mess as a result. A large population isn't a problem, the problem is the rate of growth. No economy can sustain a population that doubles every 25 years. The people who insist on adding to their number without thought as to how they will cater for them are a menace. |

if the invest that money into industrialization, in 6months we will have an industry running somewhere, u can now employ this people to do easy jobs n pay them from it. stop wasting money to score cheap political points. OmaniPadmeHum: Happy New Year to her and Niger Deltans.
Niger Delta Clean-up? What clean up?
Yes any effort by the FG to clean up and develop the region is welcome. But Why do we allow the problem of pollution persist both from equipment failure and sabotage (theft, militancy, vandalism)? We are cleaning up what will eventually spill in no distant time? There are root, remote and immediate causes of these spills and releases. These must first be addressed.
There must be moves to address the two main issues around the spills first and then the clean up will have sustained impacts and meets it purpose. Without this we will keep cleaning up more spills than necessary.
The problem in the Delta is from all Levels. Federal, State, Local, Individual, Militant Groups etc. Each has failed woefully. With one problem at one level triggering problems in other levels. Till date there is no know road map to develop this region or even Nigeria. Hardly is there control of development. Roads till today, in 2016, are still constructed without side walks etc. What have the State Governors and Local Government Chairmen done? Check their payroll and you will find thousands of Ghost Workers. Children and relatives of politicians, earning salaries without adding any value and many many many other problems. How have the Governors in these regions created value and invited investments into their States?
Infact where does one start...
Happy New Year Jare. Let us not start with complaints. There are issues but you cannot make blanket, untrue statements. I do not speak for the entire country but I know that in AKS, CRS and Lagos the state governments build roads with pavements. And Lagos and AKS have roadmaps for development. Anambra also seems to have its own plan that it is following to good effect. CRS under the previous governors had solid plans - Ayade is making other noises, reminiscent of leaders from more useless parts of the country. Having said that I would love to know what the various useless local governments do besides dole out money to their friends and relatives. |

Honestly I think nigeria should be divided . It doesn't matter because many of those languages are going extinct and the perceived ethnic boundaries will subside as well. The reason why there is so much division and 'difference' in Nigeria is not because of stark physical or cultural differences but more because of appalling transport links between regions as well as miseducation. The exception to what I've said is the difference between the North and the South. Islam is incompatible with anything un-Islamic - music, singing, democracy, education, and modern finance are all prohibited by Islam. |
