Some people are just obsessed with image over production and that is why they miss opportunity.

This is one state where the great expectations have gone so so horribly wrong. And coming from the most educated pair of governors ever to grace the seat of government anywhere in nigeria, is just sad. Cross-River badly needs a viable opposition and the APC should prepare to take over power come 2019 if this is all the PDP has to offer. The days of Donald Duke seem like a distant memory now. Education can never make up for exposure and it is not proportional to wisdom, ideas or innovation. You either have it or you don't have it.
You can acquire both education or exposure so it's erroneous to claim that you 'either have it or you don't. That simply isn't true.

It's hard to know if Ben Ayade is truly as clueless as he appears to be (via the media) or he's just playing to an impoverished audience.

They're not on the street begging and there's a lot more business in the SE than the NW or NE.

Their literacy rates are a lot higher.

You can try and compare the North to the SE as much as you like but there's really no comparison.

Do the money go to Northern or Eastern individuals. Use sense.
The whole purpose of building infrastructure is to create an environment in which business can thrive.

If they are still resorting to begging then that is a sign that either the infrastructure isn't being built or the people are so mis-educated that they have no idea how to take advantage of the environment

All this is initial gra gra (IGG)

The Federal Government will abandon it and focus on Crude oil like they have abandoned other minerals resources .
This is why the FG should not be in control of any natural resources.

Leave it to the states to invite private interests to develop these resources.

If the FG was serious about diversification of the economy then that is what they would do.

Niger Delta people are a disgrace for not demanding more from their political leaders and for allowing themselves to be distracted by petty politics.

But no one from a region with illiteracy rates and absolute poverty rates above 70% should be talking about the resources of the ND, especially when they themselves have been using the money to purchase children; waste on trips to the Middle East and purchase property in Abuja.

And what has Katsina been doing with its own resources?

Someone who stole N4.2Bn, and refunded N1.2Bn, all within 11 months doesn't deserve any honour....
But, who knows, he might become the next governor of Lagos....just who knows??
It's not about the party it's because they need to maintain the integrity of LIRS that they do not outright brand him a thief.

Besides, that was the agreement that they came to so that they conclude their investigation quickly and with minimal expense - he admitted to fraud and refunded what he had.

As long as he's out and they close whatever loopholes he used to siphon the money then it's progress for the state.

This is why I don't like the Lagos mainland.

Or one of the reasons.

They need to do something about the markets - move them to areas where access is restricted to vendors and customers, keep all the useless touts out.

I hope Computer Village is turned into a mall like arena soon too, no reason for electrical goods to be sold in a market setting, especially in a place like Lagos with its agbero problem.

This is false. They're only RESTRICTED from some parts of the city center not BANNED. E.g Wellington Bassey Way and Oron Road leading to Plaza. Howbeit, Keke isn't an orderly way of transportation, it's invaluable for day-day activities in the state.

At the story, I'm wondering how someone can be charmed. Maybe because I don't believe in such.
What's the difference between being banned from large parts of the center of town and being 'restricted'? Unless you mean that Keke are allowed on those roads at certain times then 'banned' is more accurate than 'restricted'. It's a similar situation in Calabar where Keke are not plied in the center of town because they are prohibited.

Keke is preferable to Danfos or Okadas but you do need a centralized bus system or some form of organized mass transit that plies the major routes.

And people can only be 'charmed' if they've been conditioned to believe in superstitious nonsense. If people are told that witches and witchcraft are real and have their heads filled with such tales from the day that they are born then they are more likely to be susceptible to 'charms'.

Before you talk about adding taxes you should first cut government expenditure.

Too much is wasted by the federal government for anyone to talk about adding more taxes.

Also, what happened to increasing the tax collection rate? Why are people talking about adding taxes when they do such a poor job of collecting the taxes that they already have?

This is good move I support it in as much they are not hawking to commit crime I don't see any reason why these innocent ones seeking their daily bread should not be allow to do their hawking. Lagos has be so insensitive about hawking in the name of building a useless mega city people are jobless and hungry but Lagos were busy talking my foot mega city bullshit.

Any time I see these doing their business and are being harrassed it pains me a lot the govt want no criminals and those who left their homes in the morning to stand out there till dawn the same govt still go after them and you don't want criminal isn'thuh

What Lagos forgot was that bit by bot the commercial city of Nigeria they proud themselves about is gradually sinking and being replaced systematically with administrative business and I never see any country or city that want to live on administrative economic and survived its not possible.

Please let the River State legalize it quick when Nigeria needs mega city then we will ask for it but for now let every soul get engage in something that will better his or her life is the priority right now in other to reduce crime and not mega nonsense.

Anyone that has the love of the common man in the street is always my respected fellow because if there are no poor people or low class people there will never be rich people or upper class people so if you suppressed them you have by your own silliness suppressed you livelihood because when the trouble is coming its the rich man house it will first go. Kidnapper will go to market to the kidnap a vulcanizer or shoe cobbler, armed robber will not go to pepper seller and be asking for 10 million naira so that is the way it goes.
Many cities, the most prosperous ones, have been built on the financial services and adjacent industries. Singapore, Hong Kong, London, New York are built on the service industries. They bring in far more money than you could make with 100 million street hawkers with much less mess or chaos.

Street hawking is unsightly, uncivilized and leads to traffic issues. There is no need for such activity in the 21st century, especially in a place like Lagos with new malls being built every few months.

Lagos is changing for the better - let us get rid of the hawking, the okadas, the danfos and all the other curses that have blighted the city over the years.

If you desire FDI or even internal investment you must make the environment appealing, that includes the physical environment. Nobody wants people standing in the road trying to sell them junk.

Hawking is not a sign of prosperity but of poverty. If you want to attract wealth then you must act accordingly.

Hawkers are going to want to be out when the traffic is greatest otherwise it's a waste of their time.

I've never needed to buy anything from a hawker, not sure why they are deemed essential.

There are lots of shops and supermarkets in Calabar, at least two malls (if you include Tinapa) and two markets so why are the hawkers needed?

If they want to set up roadside kiosks, then that is different - at least that is orderly, you can easily monitor what is being sold and collect the requisite taxes.

Hawkers are unsightly and reflect poorly on a city.

I hope whoever is voting on this issue has more sense than the governor. This is a cheap, quick fix that is irresponsible and short sighted.

What next after this? Okadas to ply the streets of Calabar? Keke Napep everywhere?

The previous administrations worked too hard to build Calabar's reputation as a clean, civilized city for one man to come into office and decide to destroy it all to placate village dwellers who don't want to farm.
Politics › Re: Cross River To Legalise Street Hawking by mmsen: 12:22pm On Aug 26, 2016
This is shorted sighted and stupid for a state that is obsessed with telling the nation that it is the center of tourism.

Street hawking is unsightly and tourism is largely about aesthetics. No one wants to go to a dirty congested place, especially if they already live in Ibadan or Lagos.

Who wants to dodge street hawkers on the road when on vacation?

Why do these people take to hawking before they take to farming?

Ben Ayade is trying too hard to appeal to poor people and is ignoring the implications of this decision.

Democracy cannot work when you have states that have illiteracy and poverty rates well above 50%. Democracy does not work when people are swayed by tribal and religious allegiances.

Where are they getting their information from if they cannot consume a broad consensus of opinions via newspapers or online publications?

How does an illiterate person wallowing in poverty even find out about news?

How can you trust the democratic process when people are being told that to vote for a xtian is to be a bad Muslim?

Democracy and secular laws are haram according to the Koran so we're in trouble as a union, not sure why Northerners are not agitating for their own country, built on their own values and resources.
Sports › Adamu Slams Rohr’s Appointment by mmsen(op): 7:46pm On Aug 25, 2016
Former executive committee member of world soccer governing body, FIFA, Dr Amos Adamu has predicted doom for the Super Eagles under the tutelage of new technical adviser, Gernot Rohr.

The France-born German tactician recently signed a two-year contract worth $47,000 a month to lead the Eagles through the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, but Adamu believes Rohr is not good enough.

The former Togo, Burkina Faso and Niger Republic handler will get his debut in an inconsequential AFCON qualifier against Tanzania come September 3 in Uyo, after which he will face the Russia 2018 qualifiers, beginning with an October 3 clash away to Zambia.

While Nigeria soccer lovers are eagerly looking forward to what Rohr will offer, Adamu has already shot a look ahead of what to expect and often controversial sports administrator, fondly called ‘Mr Fix-it,’ has categorically stated that Rohr will damage the Eagles before walking away.

Adamu also questioned how the 63-year-old coach was recruited by the leadership of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), but said he does not expect the body’s president, Amaju Pinnick to resign, due to a litany of failures by the national teams.

Adamu, who was sole administrator of Nigeria Football Association (NFA) when the country first qualified for the World Cup at USA ‘94, said Rohr does not have the pedigree to handle the Eagles and stressed that the coach is doomed to fail.

“He does not have the pedigree, I don’t know him. For now, we do not have a coach. He will just damage us and then he will leave.

“(Amaju) should take responsibility for his action, but it won’t happen. Who will enforce? Who is in that ministry to enforce it? It is not in our culture to resign even if it is the right thing to do.

“We are also suffering from a culture of poverty and so people asking for him to resign will be bought over and before you know it, they will be singing a different song,” Adamu told Hot FM Abuja.
