, not to mention the massive external debt that was cleared(that the present administration has started piling up again) ,the huge reserves that is being exhausted as if the dollar is going out of fashion, deregulating telecoms and the EFCC(even if they went after only his perceived enemies, is there any one that was accused that was not actually guilty).There are few Nigerians that would ve been bold to do enough to do the stuff OBJ did, especially with the state our country was in when he came into power. Given he spent most of his first term trying to get his sponsors off his back and also lost focus at the tail end of his 2nd term when a faceless group(the same old vultures up there now) was convincing him he was the best thing for Nigeria and should hence seek a 3rd term.
Soyinka is probably the best writer to ever have come out Nigeria and probably Africa but i think we on this forum probably have more right to criticize OBJ than he does. His efforts at the FRSC are at best forgotten and his idea of setting up a group to speak up against racism and corruption in government (PYRATES) gave birth to a monster that our tertiary institutions  and society at large is still to recover from.He has proven over time that good writers do not necessarily make good leaders.

@Nafifi now this is the same kind of argument that keeps us in this stalemate. What part of the write-up is untrue, there was nothing tribalistic in what was said. I lived in the north half of my life and grew up seeing southerners claim northern indigeineship to get into unity colleges. I grew up in a town called Numan in Adamawa state; it is predominantly occupied by the Bachama (a Christian tribe) and had the Hausa/Fulani settlers that were allowed to initially stay, eventually started fighting and claiming it was their land until they were dealt with the jos style. In Adamawa the Hausa/Fulani occupy only a few local government areas (including Yola the capital) but the xtian majority has never produced a governor. 
If you are honest you would admit that you have probably enjoyed some advantages over your fellows in getting to where you are if you are Hausa/Fulani. I know how many doors I get opened because I can speak Hausa fluently and probably pass for a Northerner.
Until you Northerners apologize for years of taking undue advantage and abuse of other ethnic groups, you continue to justify @006 claims for disintegration.

@katsumoto i totally disagree with u. the average southerner is not for disintegration, just for an equal playing field on every level. He wants to be able to be sure he can join the army and rise to become a general if he puts in his best and deserves it. He wants to be able to get a federal scholarship when he gets a high score and not waived aside because of an audacious quota system that encourages mediocrity. He wants to able to watch the super eagles team at the world cup, with all 11 players on the pitch  the best the country can offer even if they are all from Owan-west in Edo state or takum in Taraba and not a team selected to portray an obscene "federal character system", simple yet seemingly elusive

Great write-up by all means. But when I read the first page of this topic and i saw replies to it had gotten to the 5th page i could not wait to see replies on that page. I was certain at that point all that was stated in the write-up would have been lost and we would be back to ethnic mudslinging. This was predictable because that seems to define the way every forum or blog Nigerians interact these days. I can’t understand how pathetically blind as a people we have become. Our divisions have kept us this backward as a people not a few Hausa/Fulani herdsmen and their greedy "southern cronies”. It’s hard to see how we can stand up for change when before we agree to stand up for anything we are thinking of sharing the spoils among ethnic lines.
"O perverse and senseless generation" can’t you tell that good and credible leadership will augur well for all Nigerians irrespective of what region produces it. Considering our unquantifiable human and natural resources, all it takes is for a system that is accountable to the people for Nigeria to excel.
Needless to say change is inevitable, with the advent of the internet; social media has made it impossible for this now hapless cabal to control our thought patterns and mindsets. But my fear is that change might be elusive in our generation until we shed the garb of ethnicity and demand for such change with one voice.

Most of the posts are a clear indication that Nigerians have completely adopted the siddon look approach completely.for all most of us care, Dora might as well shut up,while the country goes to blazes,and if we are lucky we might get our green cards before then.How pathetic!!!

its the same old tricks they have been using all through the years.the divide and rule tactic works everytime.so long as they keep making us see ourselves as north and south its a lot easier to keep us under control.don't u folks ever wonder that irrespective of who is in power or what tribe is actually at the center, there seem to b some names that are always at the helm of affairs, this cabal cuts across all tribes,this set of elite make us see ourselves as Hausa/Fulani,igbo,Yoruba,ijaw e.t.c meanwhile they rob us silly while they drink champagne together and laugh at our expense.This simple reason is why there can be no revolution in this country, cos as soon as any part of this country rises up to react this evil cabal will create the impression it's along tribal lines.

pls in case we don't know acts of terrorism have been going on in northern nigeria for over 20years.As far back as the Maitatsine riots in the north east in the early 80s,the zaria/ kaduna riots in the same decade and many more recent episodes.In all of these tens of thousands have been killed .Now because we dont have the same value for human life as the west,we have often portrayed them as little skirmishes and termed them sectarian violence or religious disturbances, but they were in fact, all acts of terror done in the name of Islam.

crazy and silly as the conversations on this topic seem to be, they open up our eyes to see the divisions that exist between us as Nigerians. Members of nairaland are usually young people of the post-Biafran era and that the issue of splitting this entity called Nigeria is hugely contemplated among them is a wake-up call to all our leaders that have continued to rob us blind all these years. Its appalling that 50years into our existence this sort of divisions exist, but the beauty of it all is this, we are not in 1963 where the weapons are barrels and mortars ,rather, we are in an age where blogs and forums like this allow people to share ideas discuss their views and even vent frustrations openly.
let us not stop talking about it, let us not pretend these issues do not exist, they define the very fabric of our society which is rather unfortunate, a quota system that sees individuals attain positions or get opportunities simply because they are from "educational less developed states" and yet they still keep most of their young ones on the street as beggars and keep them away from schools thereby maintaining the status quo.
A system that eats even into our national football teams, that at every time it is expected that certain regions must have their own on the team at all times, irrespective of their abilities, is definitely one that has run its course.
