PoliticsRe: Should Mko Abiola Be Immortalied? by Moves: 1:47pm On Jul 22, 2009
The simple answer is NO, The FG may honor him or his family & benefactors build an edifice to immortalise him, But not a national holiday as been touted by some people, june 12 may be immortalised as a national holiday but not abiola, when we dont have a Zik day, Awo's day or ahmadu bello day

I work in a predominantly white place.

I just feel some of these posters in this thread have a complex of some kind. A few would have been denied Visa back in naija and as such the Brits automatically become racist etc. It is scary if in almost 2010 people have this sort of mentality.
I would say am happy for you, am sincerely hope you dont, Moreover, you haven't argued that racism doesn't exist in ur community, or that racism in not sometimes glaring even though in a subtle way in the UK, and since i dont know you personally I cannot say much on you personally having experienced racism as what is deemed racist action by Mr A may be deemed an action borne out of personal dislike by Mr B

You have a good point. However, being married to a black person does not preclude a white man/woman from being racist and vice versa.
Agreed but I now look at his actions in a different light as oppose to previous, The bastard is still a bastard.
PoliticsRe: Sink Immigrants' Boats-british National Party Leader Nick Griffin by Moves: 2:15pm On Jul 09, 2009
It is quite posible for Elrazur not to have experienced racism, if u live & work in a predominately black area or migrant area the chances of you experiencing racism is slim, Also sometimes we tend to term people's action (whites) to be racially motivated when in actual fact it is just a dislike, based on the actual individual and with no bearing to their race, Case in point, have the manager at work, could bet my house that the guy is racist cos of his action and the manner in which he deals with non natives, until last week at our summer party , saw the dude's family, he is married to a ghanian lady with 3 lovely kids, So understandably it is easy to point at racism whereas there could be other underlying issues that give raise to people action towards us which may have no racial bearing,

@ Kobo;
I think you are missing the point of the thread; In going into Business; the First Aim is to make "Profit" which comes ahead of CSR, Also I believe that most nigerians business man I have met --though into small scale businesses do some sort of CSR, Especially if they use to be a diasporian, as they have loads of both Extended families and Non Family requesting they be helped out, so technically they are affecting other lives around however miniscule, There is absolute nothing wrong in being enterprising with the mindset of going to naija to make a killing as long as within legal means.

JustGood:
Please could you tell me where that law originated from in the UK? There is no law in the UK for you to prove where you got money from if you have committed no crime. The legal position is that any amount over £1000 can be siezed from anyone if the police have grounds to believe that it is the proceeds of, or intended for, unlawful uses. Even when the money is siezed, it cannot be done for more than 2 working days without a court order.

Now, getting a court order means that there must be something evidently against you or the court will not grant the order. the onus is always on the police to prove that you have gained the money illegally or that you want to put it to illegal use.
The Bolded portion shows you agree that the police can question and confiscate cash found on a person, The latter part , am lead to believe that you have not heard of (POCA) Police can instigated proceedings under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) if he could not provide any legitimate source for the money. PoliticsRe: Fashola Moves Against Landlords by Moves: 1:12pm On May 25, 2009
I believe majority of us have nothing against the abolishment of 1-3 years advanced rent payments, but the need of fairness to both parties, 1-3 years rent advance is Unfair to the tenants, but we have also either seen or heard of tenants owing 2-3 years rent debts, So a solution to the problem has to be something is fair to both parties and not about the needs of the Majority as some have stated earlier,
For comparing with what is obtained in the west, kindly bear in mind that a lot of these landlords only invest 5% of the actual value of the property and are protected by laws and credit systems that aid them to secure the investment unlike in nigeria where most landlords personally fund the total cost of building.

It is a good Idea, dont think it will be implemented as stated in the article cos there will be a public hearing on the Bill, will most likely require modifications, will prefer a situation where may 3 months deposits and then monthly payments, if tenants misses 2 months rents consecutively landlord begans eviction and the eviction process shouldnt take more than 3 months hence worst case scenario the landlord losses a months rents, and tenants gets 3 months also to either cough up, or be evicted, fairness to but parties as most properties in the state are privately owned and Fashola should not discourage investors away from the property investments as the govt is unable to cater for theproperty needs of the state

1. Fashola commences the 10 Lane lagos to badary road last week, this week FG and FCT embarks in the 10 Lane Abuja airport road. Yarardua is aware fashola is embarking on a lot of laudable projects in lagos.

I think you are on point= 10 Lane is costing Lagos N10 billion whilst abuja 10 lanes= $1.7 Billion and some one here is wondering what the furore is about, Lets not even compare the economic activities that is going to be enabled by the construction of lagos badagry --and further connecting with the neighbouring benin Republic

Hope he wins as he might serve as a role model to the youths, and hopefully be more relevant than david lammy

PoliticsRe: Can Yaradua Build House For All by Moves: 1:11pm On May 13, 2009
proudly9ja:
I think I agree with the OP. It is possible if there's a will. In addition, Il like to add that the 2 bed flats should not be sold at all but rather rented out. This should eliminate the issue of availability and affordability. Also the rent should be affordable to the average Nigerian worker living on 10,000naira/month minimum wage (I hope Im right?). Therefore, if I was in charge, the rent wouldn't be more than 5,000naira per room per month so on average, govt will net in 10,000/house/month. For 36 million houses, that should be about 360 billion per month (Pls check my maths o, ). That money should be used towards maintanance of the houses and building an average of 10,000 additional houses per year. I think in due time, say over 12 years, with consistency, the housing problem will be solved.
U should know that Nigeria govt dont think like that, case in point is lagos state; there some so called low income estate 2bedroom Flat currently on sale in Ikorodu for N3.2 Million, Dont think any low income earner can afford that & if a govt can sent it price that high what would a private investor do ; Also i dont understand why they can simply build and let it out, so create additional income stream for the Govt.

Nuzo; my contribution is not to give up on nigeria yet, things wont continue like this forever, the dynamics are fast changing, it may not be plain for all to see, but lot more people are becoming genuinely interested in the affairs of the motherland although a large proportion for the goodygoody, It's my believe that solving the problem of nigeria just require 3 self less leaders, and before you know it , change would have come, case in point is fashola in lagos, just 1 man, have within 2years has inspired renewal & so much hope amongst lagosians, If only we can get such visionary and focused leadership and the top of the country, then we are on our way to greatness, cause we have all the ingredients required to make a great nation, You should read Dele Momodu's article "In search of Our own Obama" never use to take him serious as a political columnist but this article inspires hope and possibilities.

proudly9ja:
Madam Ayoka's sudden turn around has showed us what we all are as Nigerians --- Cowards and people with no conscience.

I hailed her some weeks back when she refused to bow to corruption and rather resigned her appointment. I hailed her because another Nigerian in her shoes would have simply bowed to the highest bidder and done thier bid. Infact, I was so much proud of her that I wasn't bothered about her spilling the beans on whoever it was that was trying to or attempted to bribe her and stuff ballot boxes. I was willing to allow her resign and return to her children and grand children and live the rest of her life peacefully. However, in a matter of days and after a visit to her 'oga', INEC chairman, she has recanted and the same votes she herself accepted as illegal and thus she couldn't vouch for, she signed in and declared Oni as winner based on those votes.

Unlike a lot of us though, I do not believe this is a battle against PDP. AC is just as guilty as the party in power. They were only out rigged in this case. Thereffore in this Ekiti soap opera, the real losers are you and I, the people of Nigeria. It is the citizens who are felled by 'stray' police bullets and attacked by armed robbers while our leaders (both PDP and AC) continue to ride in their bullet proof SUVs. It is the citizens who will die in hospitals due to lack of adequate facilities and doctors strike while the leaders fly abroad to treat their common cold. Yes, the real losers in this drama ladies and gentlemen are the common men and women who have shed their blood, walked naked on the streets of Ekiti, spent endless time venting their spleens on NL and other forum and watched in disbelief as our ''heroine'' suddenly lost her conscience and her ''christian faith'' and signed that paper that declared once again that corruption has come to stay in our beloved Nation.

Is there any hope in all this? Do I have any right to ask Nigerians to continue to believe? Il answer that in one question. If you were in Ayoka's shoes, would you have done any differently? Your answer to that would help us know if we should continue to believe that the giant of Africa will once again rise from her slumber.
Excellent write up, appreciate and share your dissapointment, I was amongst those clamouring for her to go the whole hog, She could have been our own rosa parks, as her courage would have ignited same courage in other RECs and Public servants to say No, the ripple effect would be amazing, elected state governors will go to work knowing thats is the surest way to get re-elected, I would have rather she maintained her resignation than to do the masters bidding, The present govt seem to be hell bent on entrenching corruption and creating fear that anyone that challenges the Status Quo will be hounded to submission, ala Ribadu , El rufai & now Adebayo, Until the nigerian on the street shows commitment to uplifting the country even if it means paying the ultimate sacrifice we will remain in doldrums
PoliticsRe: Ekiti Fall Out: Can You Really Blame Mrs Ayoka by Moves: 1:08pm On May 06, 2009
Yes, I can, Nobody asked her to open her mouth in the first Place,  and a coward @ 74, Even if her life was threathened are you now saying she will be protected for the remainder of her life, which give or take another 15years, what an excuse, she could drop dead tomorrow, ask Abacha, Until nigerians stand up to the Political Elite, be it PDP or AC, nothing will change, she has done more harm than good, what do you say to the innocent people in Ekiti who had their properties destroyed due to the tension her actions created,

wirinet:
Nigerians have been known to leave you high and dry when it comes to the crunch. Ask the Abiolas, the Fawehinmis,  the Nwosus, the Umars, and so on. Nigerians would not put themselves on the line to support you.

I personally know someone that was killed by bullet during the Abiola riot; Fawehinmi is still alive and Abacha is no more, doesnt that tell you something

How many political murders have gone unsolved in Nigeria, what did the people do to make sure the culprits are caught.  If Mrs Ayoka was attacked by" armed robbers" or "thugs", and killed, what will happen. If she was arrested and sent to kirikiri, what will the people do. Do people really think that a 74 yr old woman can stand the might of the Federal Government?

Eziachi:
Is she a heroine  or a coward? or just a cow?
Well! it depends about what time, day or hour that you read about her and her actions. Because one minute she has resigned because she doesn't want her name soiled along with election riggers and the next minute she reappeared and claimed to still belonging to the rigging family, everything is KAMPE, no shaking and she is going back to work she told us.

She is just a typical Nigerian, they know what the right thing is, will love to be heros of doing the right thing, will dream about it, will test the water of doing the right thing but when it comes to the crunch, boy! they are spineless.

Some of the lack of spine emanate from not knowing their rights, shaky principle, the mentality that executive powers of govt means the power of the almighty. If not, how on earth will a resident electoral commisioner happened to tender her letter of resignation to the president? For what reason? Was she appointed by ASO ROCK? If she knew her right despite her age, she should have written to the INEC as a body, not even Maurice. Even the law enforcer, Okiro threatening the poor cow with arrest, as if resigning from a job has become a criminal offence. Haba!!!
Even for Yar Adua to refuse he letter of resignation makes a mockery of Nigeria and it's version of democrazy. When he should have told her that she is writing to the wrong person or the wrong office, which was exactly what she did.   Maybe a copy of the letter to the presidency just for references, yes, but telling Umaru that she is resigning is pure ignorance as it has nothing to do with him.

Even when they refused her letter of resignation, if she really means business about her integrity, she should have turn around and tell them, well since you refused, then I quit. You cannot stop a person from quiting his job, not even in North Korea.
Now she is back to work, what is she going to do after all that she had  said about fake results?
She can't announce a result she told us was fake now, can she?
But Knowing Nigeria, that won't be impossible for her to do, it's a land were you can turn electric into candle and no one will notice.
Excellent

@Moves did you read in my post where I wrote that "I commend Chief Ayoka Adebayo's decision to resign & her right to leave & live to tell the tales"

I did, thats why I stated that what she did is more of self preservation (and there is nothing wrong in it, although the need is debatable @74) which is what is wrong with nigeria, we think of ourselve & immediate family above the common good of the whole nation- hence the need to steal for our generations unborn, Declaring the good votes, voiding the rigged election; making public the fake result she is being compelled to announce & the "Evil cabal " behind it, even though it might put her in harms way (what heroine do), that to me is a personal sacrifice,

Dora Akunyili's achievements in NAFDAC will always be there for all to see no matter what other ventures she goes into and yes threats were made on her life and she still did the job, etc, however I think comparing Dora Akunyili and the REC official who handed in a resignation later does not make sense.
Thats is the basis of my argument that Dora has earned the right to disagree that a fellow woman of older age can use the above as an excuse.

First of all, what is the job of the REC official? Does it include protecting ballot boxes from being snatched and fighting off violent, armed, hired political thugs? I really doubt if such is in the job description of an electoral commissioner, however as you postulated one of the duties of and REC is to announce electoral results, if this is what this woman is being castigated and called cowardly for not doing then I really don't get it. Do we just want hired zombies as public officials or don't we value the ability to analyse a situation and take required action anymore? Would it be better if she announced results which came from an obviously fraudlent election? You have reports of uprisings, people being arrested for massive thumb printing of ballots in residences, people dressed in police uniforms also partaking in electoral malpractices, and you feel the results should be announced? This is not necessarily about making this woman a hero but I think what she did was in order especially since it was done before announcing results, don't we want more public officials with a "concience"?
I had initially commended her stance- But her duty is to annouce the correct results for those place where the election took place without malpractices--cancel the results for those places where the result she has reason to be fake and state the reasons with evidence which according to you are widely available---This action will send the right message to the do -or die riggers and she then should go the whole hog by stating those who were compelling her to announce fake result and tell us which fake result she is being compelled to announce, How can you claim she is cowardly? Because you haven't heard from her in probably less than 24hours after her resignation even with all the reported threats on her person? Please let us try to be objective before jumping on the bandwagon.

It is 4days since the election took place, thats more than enough time, she and the political elite are not loosing nothing, spare a thought for the common ekiti citizen who cant go about their daily business cos of the uncertainty in the air.
