SIR BANYE: True word you have said, but for a single storey building with flats attached, we are considering 900sqm to 1500sqm tops, its not as expensive as most people make it sound. All that is needed is an excavator or a D7 bulldozer, with a maximum of 20 hours man hours. I was raised and brought up in the niger delta, we build everyday on water, all it takes is a considerable understanding of the soil. I still insist, pile foundation should only be employed when we building multi storey building or a structure of considerable heavy weight. Personally i believe a good engineer should also consider cost effective ways for his client, pile foundation in any way u put it is not cheap. Also consider connecting beams and total number of piles to be used. In extremly swampy areas, i can bet most times u do not meet solid earth structure, so you work with friction piles which upon perenial flooding could settle further. Using soil replacement and elevating ur floor base, you eliminate such risk.Well said sir.. A pile foundation for a 1 storey house in the Niger Delta (which is most likely to be swamp land if they are debating on the type of foundation to use) is just going to be an utter waste of money which will be spent on the Drillers|excavators to be employed. My advice will come from the recommendations made by you; - Soil replacement prior to laying the foundation.. NOTE: The major advantage of Raft foundation are; the even distribution of the load across the entire foundation, its less susceptible to failure in case of subsidence|ground movement & is a cheaper option to Pile foundation for small structures such as a 1 storey building. maybe if we were looking at high risers like 5 storeys and above, then the Raft foundation would not be an option. |
biting cool: Dude I thot u were married. So u will take d risk n give another man's woman a head just to prove a point!!!!! U never hear say throat cancer is on d rise esp. Among men 'cos of Mouth Gig? @ least limit ur tongue olympics to one woman........... My two centsAll die na die.. ![]() This is for science my guy!! Take change for your 2 Cents.. ![]() |
SIR BANYE: I am a civil engineer, in my years of practise, i ve never heard or seen anyone use pile foundation for a single storey building. No matter how bad the soil is, raft is best recommended. I always advice clients building in very swampy area that are not too sure of the soil bearing capacity to the soil replacement. Soil replacement is done by replacing the top soil of your land with solid sharp sand to a depth of about 2m, depending on how poor your soil is. Upon doing soil replacement, a proper compaction must be done. After which you can use a properly reinforced raft of about 1m for your foundation. Soil replacement is the guaranteed way to improve your soil irrespective of how poor it is. This way i can guarantee you of a stable structure free from sinking or foundation tear. You can contact me on udoka.banye@yahoo.com for further adviceI was going to say the same thing, but didnt want to speak out of turn because if they are confused about what type of foundation to use for such a small building, then they must have a perculiar terrain that they are trying to build on. |
richeyy: You guys should know that there is a difference between a geologist & a geological/geotechnical engineering, just as there's a difference between a computer scientist & a computer engineer. We're talking about foundation design here; a geologist is a scientist who is knowledgeable about the earth and it's content, he doesn't have the technical wherewithal to design for foundation.VERY CORRECT!! I remember us having this debate one time trying to find out why I was an Engineer and the other Geologist wasnt. So we started listing the courses we did in school and that was when it became obvious what our difference were. Whilst my courses consisted of a mix of electrical Engineering courses (Basic Electricity), Mechanical courses (Strenght of Materials 1 & 2, Basic Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics 1 & 2, Foundation Engineering, Engineering drawing 1 & 2, e.t.c) and Geological courses (Geomorphology, Soil Mechanics, Rock mechanics, Geomatics, e.t.c), the Geology student did just the Geology courses without necessarily doing any mechanical courses. I do agree with you sir very much.. |

richeyy: Thank you! I was beginning to wonder what a geologist has got to do with investigating ground conditions for foundation designI as a Geological engineer can do ground investigations with my small background in; 1. Soil Mechanics 2. Rock Mechanics 3. Foundation Engineering 4. Rock Mechanics 5. Strength of materials I & II & 6. Fluid Mechanics I & II All with hands on and practical experience. |

Reference: The building is small so I think a very important factor is the availability of equipment. If you can somehow lay your hands on a rig piling may be cheaper and quicker. Rafts are low tech solutions but are grave money pits.Rafts are alternatives, not low tech or inferior to pile foundations. |

D'Govnor:For the purpose of being proper, a Structural Engineer should not be the one to design a foundation plan. Foundation analysis should ideally be done by a Foundation engineer. Its based on the findings of the foundation Engineer that the Structural guys would base their design. |
Fadelex: the engineer that quoted for pile foundation for a storey building is definitely a quack.... unless you are building an island in a river, Pile foundations are long, slender, columnar elements in a foundation that are installed into the ground. You sir have spoken like a true engineer... ![]() Which engineering field do you rep sir? |
Answer Don't confuse about raft and mat foundation. Raft foundation is mat foundation. Now what is raft foundation? Raft foundation is a thick concrete slab reinforced with steel which covers the entire contact area of the structure like a thick floor. Sometimes area covered by raft may be greater than the contact area depending on the bearing capacity of the soil underneath. The reinforcing bars runs normal to each other in both top and bottom layers of steel reinforcement. Sometimes inverted main beams and secondary beams are used to carry column loads that require thicker foundation slab considering economy of the structure. Both beams cast monolithically with raft slab. Now I shall discuss where raft foundations are required. Raft foundation is required where soils have low bearing capacity and have to support heavy structural loads. Normally structures on marshy land, soft clay and land that are made up of sanitary land fill or other materials (like debris, unconsolidated soil and solid waste etc. where differential settlement is suspected)-require raft foundation. Raft foundations are preferred in the soil that are suspected to subsidence. Subsidence may occur from different sources like change in ground water level due to climatic change specially in case expansive soil or foundation in mining area. In one words, where deep foundation like pile foundation are not economical and feasible and isolated column footing is impracticable due to large footing size or over-lapping of neighbor footing , raft foundation is the economical solution. http://civil-engg-world..fr/2012/06/what-is-raft-foundation-difference.html Speaking as a Geological Engr. The simplest answer is that raft foundations are advisable for use in areas like; Swamp land, areas susceptible to earth movement and areas with low bearing capacity. The whole Idea behind the raft foundation is to distribute the weight evenly across the foundation as against pile foundations where you have main pillars|beams and smaller supports. This is from my small understanding of Soil|rock mechanics & Foundation Engineering! God bless Geologists! |

LadyBra: This is about what the Ladies want and not what you like, and if u see staying healthy and been fit as bullshit! Oh well, good for you, we are all entitled to our opinion, btw I like thick girls too and there's a new thickness in town and it's called Sexy thick. So there's no crime in wanting to be skinny, healthy, fit or go from being obese to Being sexy thick. What ladies want?! Its you skinnies that made Ladies start wanting to be skinny. Our mothers were all big and beautiful and werent self-concious about it. But since the skinnies made skinny the new sexy, all the women got crazy about weight loss. Back then, our Mothers had to be fattened before we would even marry them. Now, look at what we have. Anyways, I wish you luck with your business venture my dear. No hating here. But I still rep the big chicks. Big is not unhealthy. Obese is unhealthy. There is a difference. The in your first picture isnt obese and had a fine yansh before than she does now.. |
Lilimax: This question is directed to guys aloneYarinya!! How much are you?! I need a Igbo girl in my Harem. |

YES!!! ALLAH DEMANDS IT OF ALL MUSLIMS.. A man is allowed to marry up to four women for many reasons, benefiting both the man and the women. •Firstly, it may help the women as in the case of the Prophet where he often married poor women or women whose husbands died in battle. This was to help and protect them. •Secondly, as the prophet Abraham (as) married, they may bear the man a child when the first wife cannot. Instead of abandoning a women for her inability to conceive, he marries another and *treats them both with justice) •And lastly, in the case of a man tempted to commit adultery with another women. Instead of this man committing a grave sin, adultury, Allah has given man an ease within his law and allowed man to marry another women. The aim of this is to prevent man and the women from committing a grave sin. Many people look at this law as a selfish addition to men but in fact it is meant as an ease on both men and women; it's not an excuse to 'have fun' with many wives but in fact it is meant to help ease men and women with their way of life.
