WebmastersOop Php 5: Your View by MT(op): 3:13am On Jan 16, 2009
@all

Have you used or review OOP PHP 5 before ? if yes then please, what is your opinion on it ?.

I think it is gradually making php 4 (which is what is being majorly taught on NL) obsolete. Is it worth it learning PHP 4 again as many employers now request for web developer with OOP PHP 5 skill. Lastly, what advantage will developer with OOP PHP 5 has over his PHP 4 counterpart?

Let feel your pulse on this

@jimmyjam,

Please permit me to say this. don't you think when one has got nobody to reply a particular thread, except that person himself, it is time to dump the thread?. I have observed that you have made about 4 responses without you having anyone replying. I advise it is time to quit the game and move on. It doesnt mean you are a coward, it only means you leave when the ovation (I guess there's none in this case)is loudest.

Sorry, do not see my contribution as a "reply" to your thread but an "observation. [s]Gosh!I pray I wont be slammed angry[/s]

UK manufacturing output fell at its fastest pace since 1981 in November, official figures showed, underlining the fragile state of the economy.

Output fell 7.4% from a year earlier - the biggest drop since June 1981. On a monthly basis, the fall was 2.9%, the Office for National Statistics said.

The news is likely to reinforce expectations that policymakers need to do more to stave off a deep recession.

The Bank of England cut interest rates to 1.5% on Thursday, a 315-year low.

James Knightley, an economist at ING said that the UK economy could shrink by around 3% this year.

We are in a very painful recession

Robert Peston, BBC business editor

Read Robert Peston's blog

"Industrial output has now fallen for nine straight months, which is the worst run of data since 1980, so the pressure for further stimulus will continue," he said.

Bad times

The weak figures hit the pound, which briefly fell against the euro and the dollar.

Paul Dales, UK economist at Capital Economics, said that manufacturing was likely to continue to plunge despite the weaker pound, which should make UK goods more competitive on international markets.

"It's not a good time to be in industry," he said.

Industrial production accounts for around a fifth of our economic output, says the BBC's business editor Robert Peston.

He said the figures confirmed that the UK was in a very painful recession.

This week, car manufacturer Nissan said it would cut around 1,200 jobs, a quarter of the workforce at its Sunderland plant, and china and glass group Waterford Wedgwood went into administration.

Data released at the same time showed that producer output prices were unchanged in December from November, although analysts had expected a fall.

Input prices fell 2% due to falling raw material costs.

@ outlookbabe,

I cant but agree with your comment!. Your analysis was exemplary. I just watched on the SKY news now that more that 5000jobs of different companies were lost between Monday to Thursday this week alone!. Even barclays have to let go of more than 400 IT professionals!.

WebmastersRe: General PHP / Database Using Php & Mysql & Xml Q & A Section by MT: 4:00am On Jan 08, 2009
phew, Im back again and I have 2 questions. Let me explain where I am stuck:

I have a field in my table that i call date_created. It has the attribute of datetime.

Now, in my form, I request date to be entered in a particular text box, the value of which I intend to store in date_created field , but alas it wouldnt store. I dont know if you could get me out of the wood.

Another one is, since date could be entered in a variety of ways ( e.g 12th January,2008, 12-01-08,12-01-2008,12/01/2008, 2008-01-02 etc), how do I "force" the users to be able to key in the date using a particular pattern.

Thats all for now, waiting for answers pls

@dhtml,

Thanks for your contribution, especially that site you just gave out. However, i just read your solution to my question but I thought your solution will change the password from being empty to something. You know I indicated that I just press ENTER key at the MYSQL console and this will take me to the MYSQL prompt. Does it mean that I MUST change this "null" or "empty website to some words b4 I could connect to MYSQL via PHP?.
WebmastersRe: General PHP / Database Using Php & Mysql & Xml Q & A Section by MT: 7:27pm On Jan 06, 2009
My First Question :

I just installed WAMP. Nw the problem is , I do not know the default username and password that I can use to connect to MYSQL. I can open the MYSQL console, press enter when I get to the password, and I can start using SQL commands, but the problem is when I want to use php to query mysql. In the
mysql_connect command, I dont know what to put as username and password. I have used this command : mysql_connect("localhost","root",""wink or die("cannot connect"wink; but it is not connecting. Is there any SQL command I can issue at the MYSQL console that can tell me my username as well as password.

I hope my question is clear enough

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Gerrard Vs C Ronaldo by MT(op): 8:23pm On Dec 18, 2008
Personally, I think Gerrard is a great player that can win a game on his own (Champion League Fina : Liverpool vs AC milan readily comes to mind) and Ronaldo is too quick-feet and very impressive, but I feel looking at the whole picture, Baloon d'or 2008 winner is the better one.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Gerrard Vs C Ronaldo by MT(op): 4:58pm On Dec 18, 2008
I will appreciate an honest comparison between these 2 great players. I was having a discussion here with a friend and we seem to be maintaining different sides.

Who in your opinion is the better player and why ?.

please no beef of any player

It's not all about certification, it is how sound you are about what you claim to be certified on. You need to know the practical well. I have seen people with certification using brain dumps to pass without knowing a jack. Besides, dont be master of all trades. Try and pick a career path and develop yourself in it. I hope this helps

@sprumbaba,
Focus on your strenght and staff your weakness
@yawatide
Should you do it all? In an ideal world, no.
I guess both of you are actually saying the same thing, using different statements to describe it. Everything still points to division of labour, which I feel represent the larger view of the NL contributors on this thread.

@quadrillo
NB:Curiousity kills the Cat

all what u mention are necessary for a Web Designer not a Web master I believe you know the different.

Web Designer (primary school)

Web Developer (Secondary School)

Web Master (University)

Incase u need to know am a web developer. and where do you belong. OGA GURU
Are you implying that you are a secondary school student, going by your definition above?. The way you responded to the thread depicts a bit of arrogance. I have read some of your contributions on Nairaland, but with this, I think you  make me lose a bit of respect for you. Asking this question does not mean that I am a novice. I guess I have been around for quite a while. I just want to know how others are handling it, in case I have been handling it badly. Skills spiced with humility is the best!.

Lets keep the contributions rolling in please

I 'm sorry but you didnt answer the questions. Are you implying that a webmaster is not expected to know any of those tools mentioned above??.
ps. Let try and forget these "class" stuff and be more pragmatic

@nuckecy

Your contribution is highly valued!

As a webmaster, are you expected to know all the technologies that revolve round web-site building (like Javascript, css, dhtml etc) or you are MAJORLY expected to do the hard-code that run things on the server while you give out the client-side stuff to others to do?

Just being curious

@busybody,

Oh you beat me to it. You echo what I was a bout to write

@Hesperus

There are exceptions in every society. I hope you listen to the pre-budget of allistair as well as opinions of pple in the dailies. Professionals in UK, not to even talk of the Odd-jobbers, are in for a real squeeze in this recession period.

No one is talking about recession in naija, as it has become ways of life there since 1904 grin

That your uncle you refer to would have done better in a credit society, (remember that pple abroad live on credit). So, dont even compare pple in naija with abroad pple cos while pple in naija pay CASH for everything they own, pple abroad OWE what they own to some banks embarassed

It's just an illustration just to show that people don't really need billions to kickstart their business in Naija
