Money needed to do interlocking (compound interlock) = 2M above

Money needed to do floor stamping = 2M above

Wealthy Nigerians go for any of the two options but do you know that using LAWN is cheaper and more beautiful?

Plant some carpet grass, buy a lawn mower and install sprinklers in some strategic locations! Viola! You can’t spend up to 500k

Interlock might be used to create pathways only
Really?? I tried it and I gave up due to maintenance cost.

Spot on Chief.
I'm sure those last two plans were custom made to suit the client brief. It's just left for the architect to marry the clients brief and functionality together to achieve the best
Yep! And this exactly is what makes the huge difference between design architects and someone who only sabi draw or use CAD softwares.

Some clients can even do better than some architects in space planning and conceptualizing great designs but what really happened is that we’ve intimidated them with “Give Your Jobs To The Pro To Get The Best” theory.

That’s why you see many bring their designs here for review for reassurance that they’re getting something practicable and functional.

I need service of a professional solar inverter installer to help me do audit of a fully installed system before commissioning.
I’ll need someone who’s conversant with lithium battery.

I just need an external person to do this.

Thanks.

>> Keeping Snakes Off Your Building

Snakes live under houses where the conditions are warm and dry, and can get in through any opening larger than 1 inch.

For me, I use wire mesh with holes no larger than 1cm square over all potential entry points.
Keep your building rodent free. Snakes love to eat them (rat, lizards, etc)

Maintain a very clean compound and keep the lawn low at all times. Snakes vanishes as soon as it sees a predator larger than it coming its way.

Just as mother hen will protect her eggs/chicks, a snake will protect its eggs if they’re inside your building and this means it’ll attack you.

The sentence in bold is where I have been have problems believing.

Please, do you have a hole into the soakaway or into the chamber?

I have studied all the soakaway system we have been doing, and I still find it difficult to believe a snake will get into the soakaway system from the surrounding ground, and then find it's way into the house through the pipes, up the chambers and come up from the toilet bowl. The journey seems too far for a reptile to make it into the house.

I can understand the entry point through a broken chamber, but the soakaway seems a more circuitous route for an animal which doesn't live all its life in water. In the tropics like Nigeria, the temperature of the inside of a soakaway could be very high under a hot sun, with very little air circulation.

Another entry point I have been suspecting is the toilet air vent. Those vents which come out from the top walls and is usually covered, a snake can climb down into the pipe if its left uncovered and then climb into the pipe, through the chamber and then find a way to climb into the WC because it can swim in cold water.

We're just investigating sha o cheesy
Baba I hope you know snakes can’t make a u-turn. It’ll either die inside the pipes or struggle to reach the end.

Also with the way we design our septic tank/bathroom system to reduce the number of pipes we’ll use, I believe anything is possible.

The snake that we found in my electrical draw box didn’t enter through the pipes. It came in through the space between the wall tiles and the wall broken by the electrician while laying the 2 inches pipes

You know how plumbers and electricians do their stuffs when they break walls and do little patching leaving the rest for the plastering crew or the tilers to finish up.

I wish I can make a video of this for learning purpose.

Exactly, I agree with you on this.
Even homeowners wouldn't give us the brief like they gave their architect prior to coming up with the design. What I just believe is, a good and sound architect will know which to pick and which to ignore from opinions gathered by homeowners from here n sent down to him/her.
But all the same, better soup na money kill am. Your architects can go extra mile provided the right fee is paid. Dont come for me on this oh baba
When designing for a client, I always ask for the ”must-have” and ”nice-to-have” features of the build to come up with an acceptable design that meets his/her needs.

Because I do custom designs most time, I don’t go with popular opinions but go with what works best for my client.
This explains the reason why the design architect should always lead a construction project. He has the mind of the project owner.

If you ask a MEP consultant about the same drawing, he’d come from MEP point of view. Likewise,. a structural engineer might tell you why you need more columns and beams.

The most important thing is functionality of the build.

From the letter that circulated on social media, the structural engineer strongly excuse his services from site at the 4 floor level of the collapse building..

The one he didn't supervise was the one that collapse...

Bros.. you know better .. Quality Control in such site must be maximum...

Everyone cut corners... it take discipline and commitments on site... Even my new IT students tried to cut corners on my site.. I have to send them packing... I don't take nonsense o...

on the question on sanctions so far.. Let us wait for the report... I know the Engr that supervise TB joshua church collapse was sanctioned.. He was even a petroleum engineer.. He was dealt with vigorously which even lead to his untimely death...
The professional body have woken up.. this can not continue....

Engr. Gbenga..
I get your point and this is the reason why no one would take most professional bodies in Nigeria too serious.

How many 21 floor buildings do we have in Nigeria that all our professional bodies will start feigning ignorance and shifting blames?
Let me put it straight, you cannot count up to 2 scores of such building in Nigeria.
Even the almighty cocoa house in Ibadan is just 26 floors.

I think the professional and the regulatory bodies should first admit the fact that they’re all guilty of dereliction of duty. Everyone is just looking for food to eat.

I know you don't mean to say professional Engineers and Architect...

I know you mean them baba lati that callls themselves engineers...

we always cutting corners in this country...

Cos we Engineers knows how risky our Licence is to us.... Compromising with contractor isnt in our profession....

You can see the way the consultant left note of leaving site for the 21 story building when the developer wanted to proof smart that eventually lead to his death...

Next time... Ask for the licence number of the engineer... if he misbehave, call attention of the professional body like NSE or Coren... he or she will be sanction appropriately...

Thanks... Engr. Gbenga
So na baba lati built Ikoyi Collapsed Building?? How many has been sanctioned so far?

Do you know the minimum voltage it’ll accept?
I know it pushes 80V to around 140 - 150V but fluctuates and do not allow passthrough when it get to 50V - 60V. So my madam who’s always at home do manual override to allow passthrough whenever the voltage gets too low to allow current into the house for lighting.

This is not limited to obtaining cash or funds alone.

Turning blind eyes on the quality of construction tools and equipment brought to projects is also negligence of duty.

I can’t turn blind eyes on simple things such as construction equipment and tools. I’d rather buy something good to use on my project than to be pushing the cost on a struggling artisan to provide work tools just because I want to make more profit
Often times they’ll come with useless equipment that cannot do a very good job.
Here’s a good example:

We’re currently working on this project and we need to do some trimming on the wall cladding (red circled part in the pic 1 attached). The artisan engaged on this project do not have the tool required to do a neat trim of the fibre cement boards (reciprocating saw or cordless circular saw), so he chose to use carpenter saw.

I decided to stop him and provided him what he need to do a good job.

Carpenter saw will do the job but won’t give us a neat cut.

Some Engineers Actually do this! They extort every Contractor , Artisans & and vendors who comes to their site. If you don't give them what they want, they will Paint you & your job badly to the owner.

A good topic for discussion tho.

Should Engineers / Architect /(People Very closely related to the owner) seek ishakole or egunje from Contractors, Artisans & vendors?!!
Such can never deliver a good job.

The little people (artisans, contractors, vendors) who knew me here know I’d rather support you with even more fund to do your job than to take from you.
(I once supported a young engineer here with some fund to take care of his logistics while preparing a bid for a MDU project that he eventually didn’t get. Even the owner didn’t know I did such a thing. grin Some people only need a helping hand).

I’ve heard/seen people who do this and interestingly most of them don’t know that’s one reason we can’t work together.

If you’d take kickback from those you’re supposed to monitor/oversee, how are you going to stop them from doing shoddy works or point out errors on the project.

The interest of most builders/contractors/supervisors often times lies in how much they can get legitimately or illegitimately on a project and not the integrity of the job.

It starts from even the smallest things.

_________

That’s one reason you’d always notice a huge difference in a project I’m physically present and the one where I choose to delegate my duty.

This is not limited to obtaining cash or funds alone.

Turning blind eyes on the quality of construction tools and equipment brought to projects is also negligence of duty.

You know that story is fake except you have a crack either at the pipe, open vents, collection chambers or soakway. It is even more impossible upstairs.
Again, who neglects their broken pipes such that the hole is big enough to fit a snake and continues to use the toilet?
Snake can make its way into a house during construction and you may not notice it at all

There was a day we killed 3 snakes in my parents bathroom (all within an hour). Apparently, they snakes have been living inside the hollow block before they moved into the house 2 and half decades ago.

That’s why:

>> It’s good to do DPC (German Floor) in new builds.
>> It’s also good to have chained lintel done on the building envelope to prevent creepy animals from gaining access into the building.
>> Leaving exposed openings and holes unattended is bad.
>> It’s good to maintain clean environment
>> It’s good fumigate before moving into a new house especially your ceiling

Snake can stay in a house with you for years without you noticing

There was a time I found a snake inside my electrical draw box. Picture below

It's easier to use plasterboard to do these kind of designs. You draw and cut from the ground and fix it up there.

I just started working on almost 400sqm church suspended ceiling on Tuesday and they’ll be using the church for a special anniversary on Sunday.
As I’m typing, we’re almost through with suspended ceiling work and it’s not just a flat ceiling design.
Though I intend to do the final touches after the anniversary on Sunday.

You can prevent snake, rodent, or roaches with the installation of flap valve or non return valve on your drainage line at the point of disposal, or discharged, these valves allow the flow in one direction while preventing the backflow, they are also serves as anti-flooding, for any of your storm drain,
Yes but you also need to pay attention when installing it in flood zone and areas with high water table because it also come with lots of issues (standing water, clogged drain, water can also accumulate within the drain during continuous use leading to health issues etc) when not properly installed or when the right design is not adopted.
