Over 20 persons, including four siblings, have died when two wooden boats capsized in Rivers State.

The tragic incident occurred on Andoni waterways in Andoni Local Government Area of the State on Tuesday night, January 9, 2024, when the boats were heading for Bonny, a neighbouring coastal council area.

It was gathered that over 25 people were in the two boats when they were struck by a heavy wave. A rescue team team came hours later and rescued some victims, including one Mr. Ayayi Promise and his wife, Rose Promise (both pictured)

Sadly, the couple's four children and little grandchild drowned.

Executive chairman of Andoni LGA, Erastus Awortu, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday, January 10, expressed rude shock over the tragedy and condoled the families and communities of victims.

Awortu regretted that the fatal accident occurred after successful festive celebrations, including unity carnivals in the council area.

He noted the council’s efforts to save those who were alive, offer first aid assistance to the injured and recover bodies of the dead from the river; as he promised to cushion the pains of the deceased families and communities in their trying moments.

Furthermore, the council chairman harped on the need for boat operators to insist on total compliance of all passengers to safety measures, and warned against night travels by sea.

“We received with rude shock and deep pain a disturbing report that over 20 persons from Andoni are feared dead in boat mishap involving two Andoni/Bonny-bound boats which occurred within the Andoni waterways on Tuesday January, 9, 2024,” the statement read.

“Upon receiving the sad development, we immediately dispatched our team to join the first responders on rescue mission at the scene of the incident in a bid to salvage the situation.

"We are closely monitoring the situation to offer further support especially to give the survivors necessary medical attention and recover the remains of the dead from the sea.

"Our hearts go out to the Families and Communities of victims of this unfortunate disaster especially Ngo Town, Ataba, Isiama and other Communities whose loved ones where involved in the boat mishap.

"We share in their pain and trauma, our prayers and thoughts are with them in this moment of grief. We will do whatever we can as a Local Government to reduce the burden of grief of the bereaved families and communities.

"While we bemoan the boat mishap which came at a time when our people were still basking in the mood of a successful festive season in Andoni, we call on operators of water transportation in Andoni to ensure strict compliance of all passengers to safety rules.

“We also warn the operators to desist from embarking on night journey on sea."

The Bayelsa Police Command has commenced investigations into the death of a mother of three, whose decomposing body was found dumped in a gutter along Akali street in Etegwe area of Yenagoa, the State capital.

Spokesperson of the command, ASP Musa Mohammed, confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Mohammed stated that a police team had removed the corpse and begun an investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding her death.

He said that no suspect has been arrested yet, but the investigation was ongoing to trace those responsible for her demise.

It was gathered that the woman’s body was discovered on Sunday morning, emitting an offensive odor from the drainage where she was discarded.

Eyewitnesses reported that signs indicated she was strangled before being dumped into the gutter.

Residents of Akali street identified the deceased as Ese, who hailed from Egbo community in Delta. She traded in cow skin, commonly known as Kpomo, at the Opolo market in Yenagoa.

They also mentioned that she had separated from her husband in April 2023.

Two Students Of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, have been crushed to death by a truck.

The incident happened on Monday, January 9, few metres away from the school’s premises, near Ikot Inyang village junction, along Aba Road in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.

The truck driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the female students, killing them on the spot.

The deceased, Abasifreke Okon, and Irene Edwin from Ikot Abasi and Ibesikpo Asutan LGA respectively, were preparing for their practical examinations scheduled for Wednesday. Jan. 10.

Both of them were ND 2 Science Laboratory Technology students and were described as best friends. They were supposed to have completed their academic programme after their exams on Wednesday.

Following the incident, the management of the polytechnic postponed the examinations.

Confirming the incident, Akwa Ibom State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Matthew Olonisaye, attributed the accident to reckless driving. He urged drivers to make the maintenance of their vehicles a top priority.

Olonisaye said: “It actually happened, it’s because of loss of control by the driver. We advise drivers to abide with the rules that guide the usage of the road, they should not be in a hurry.

“Drivers should also make vehicle maintenance a priority for any life lost cannot come back. An accident does not just happen, it is caused. I commiserate with the families of those who lost their lives.”

I used to be that person that over show poor people kindness, but recently I have realised that poor people see what you have and believe you don't deserve it, they look at you & ask themselves why they are not in your position. Anytime someone notices my freehandedness in giving out money, they always try to come up with issues from the family that is of no business of mine just to syphon money out of me.

Today their mother has a broken leg, tomorrow their sister is pregnant but doesn't have money to pay for hospital bills, next tomorrow their Dad is in the hospital and needs 250k for surgery. Their needs are endless.

I still have an open hand to giving to the poor but strategically, I do it to buy loyalty now because the only thing the Nigerian system understands is MONEY.

During Xenophobia retaliation attacks in Jakande Lekki, I saw poor people looting out franchised Shop Rite and their usual tone & consensus was that the Rich owns the place, they buy from there. Why should they be able to purchase those things while we are not able to do the same. I saw old women in their 50s, Men, Ladies & other able bodied men loot electronics and goods from honest people's market with an excuse that they are poor. Random big cars on the road in Jakande were attacked & the excuse was that they are rich, they are the ones stealing Nigerians money.

The poor lives on survival instinct, I can never feel guilty for enjoying the riches God gave me & also from the work I did.

Let them go & work!
