Sweetie, you can't tell him that's "not an excuse". Who died and made you judge? Do you even KNOW him from Adam? If he doesn't speak Igbo, the he doesn't!! BIG EFFIN DEAL!!!! And it not being an excuse to YOU is YOUR opinion. Sheesh!! People always attacking others on Nairaland.
thank you.

Every igbo person with igbo parents has no reasons, I repeat!! Has no reasons at all for their lack of spoken igbo, it's shameful and degrading to our culture and people if our youths can not speak our language!! who will teach the next generation if our generation can not even write it?

But if you're mixed then a few igbo words can do until practice makes you perfect
It's true, if you have igbo parents, then you should be able to speak it but a lot a parents don't teach their children igbo or the culture. my parents taught me enough about my culture and they teach us igbo proverbs and things of that sort but to its not enough so i do my own little research and ask questions. some children just don't care about learning igbo. so even if their parents do speak it to them, they are not going to learn because they don't want to.

The reason they leave is because the wife is too cool and probably tries to hold them back.
the reason they leave is because they expect the woman to remain the same way the day they met, which is impossible.

A bad boy doesn't cheat. . . . . . a loser does.
true.
CultureRe: Igbos That Cannot Speak Igbo Language by naijadiva2(f): 6:50pm On Feb 13, 2008
they didn't speak cuz no one around them was speaking it. you can't just wake up on morning and all of a sudden speak another language if you haven't been exposed to the laguage. that's why yorubas outside of nigeria can speak it because their parents speak it and relatives speak it to them right from when they were young. but as for some igbos born outside nigeria they don't speak it because they are not exposed enough to the language. their parents don't speak to them in igbo, relatives don't speak to them in igbo, and friends don't speak to them in igbo.

if you marry good guy. . . . . . . . then divorce is a knocking babes. Last time i checked you'll need all da spice you can get to make the marriage work if it's with a straight-laced goody shoes. A sensible, hot, smoking bad boy will turn you into a funky granma. u feel me. . . .
gurl you are too much cheesy. you can still find a good guy with with lots of flava in him. the bads one may be more exciting but he may want to go and hook up with someone else cuz to him that's what having fun is all about even when he's married.

Thats not an excuse! I was born and raised in Lagos too! we also speak english both at home and school but still I understand and speak Igbo very well. (I'm sure u speak Yoruba! just didn't pay attension to Igbo).
everyone's circumstances may be different from your's so you can't tell him that's not an excuse because it may be his excuse for not speaking. I have a cousin who was born in lagos along with her siblings but they grew up only speaking english. her father didn't want them learning yoruba and igbo was rarely spoken at home so my cousins couldn't speak yoruba or igbo but they could understand it. one of my cousins out of all her siblings is the only one that can speak igbo because she went to college/university in igboland. for me i don't know if she's speaking it right but my parents can tell that she just learnt it because they say her accent/pronounciation is a little off.

'Bad' boys know how to have fun and take you to the edge. . . . . . you know warram saying grin grin grin its all about adrenalin

As long as he's not so bad that he ends up in jail or attempts to beat me then its all good.

Plus 'bad' boys have a shed load or charisma and spunk!!!!!!!! THAT. . . . . ladies and gentlemen. . . . . . . is what turns me on. that if there is something intelligent and smart going on in his brain grin grin grin

As for the ones that are rude and cuss, its safe to say they are plain idiots! cool
theu're good when you're young trying to have fun but when its time to get serious, then you get yourself a good boy that will help you keep your life together and in line.

@ Ogidi

who are the alakuba people?

Igbos are a proud and industrious people with peculiar characteristics, naturally this creates both friends and enemies, hence the large number of threads. Languages are dying because of English all over the world, it is not a peculiarly Nigerian problem. We need to find ways to encourage our language and make the younger people regard it as being cool.
it's not a matter of whether the language is cool or not. there are enough young igbo people that would love to speak igbo but they are getting no help from family and friends. and when they do try to speak, they get made fun of because they can't pronounce the words right.
CultureRe: Facts To Prove That Ibos Originate From Egypt? by naijadiva2(f): 3:51am On Feb 13, 2008
Rebirth:
That is the issue with nigeria; people are either afraid or ashamed of their origins. rather than look into the past in search of the realities of their past, they hide under the pretext/pretence of "we are okay where we are", if we never understand the past, the future of our cultures is at risk, never wondered why the Igbo language is the fastest fading of the three major languages of nigeria Every other word in a sentence has english in it. i am a linguist so i understand the intricacies which you may not!
how are we ashamed of where we "supposedely came from" if there's no valid proof. Not knowing where we came from has nothing to doing with the language dying. They language is fading because parents are not teaching their children the language or they're just too lazy to do so. Also everyone wants to speak English. Other people in french speaking countries prefer speaking french rather than their native language but are you going to accuse them of not knowing where they came from just because they choose to speak french.
FamilyRe: The Nigerian Culture And Self Esteem by naijadiva2(f): 7:00pm On Feb 11, 2008
Everytime you try to compare Nigeria with other countries, never involve moral. Children don't act they way others do because of fear and not because of respect.
I understand your point but to say the there's no connection between Nigeria and morality or whatever term you use is wrong because Nigerians do have morals atlease the majority. A country like the us has none that's why children are disrespectful and their parents are there backing up their stupity. i have not seen a nigerian parent back up their child because they were bad. its not because they dont love them but they are teaching them right from wrong.

Its very hard sha cause the way w have been brought up is one way and the way a child thats born abroad behaves is totally different.

Its hard cause you just have to meet half way, not allowing the child to be too liberal but not bullying the child when they voice out an opinion.
you're exactly right. its not only nigerians but other africans as well. I'm not trying to say that african parents are bad cuz they're not but sometimes they try to use their african mentality on us when we have maybe an american/british or whatever mentality. like for someone is was born and raised in america may not understand their parents point of view because they're in contact with americans mostly, whether in school, work, at stores, and on the street and the only african contact they have is at home. also an african child may look or feel like they have low self esteem not because he/she feels they are "abused" but because a lot of parents dont' teach their children about their culture at an early age so they would not know how to defend themselves if someone, maybe at school, was to look down on them.

the food is amazing especially akwa ibom and cross rivers peoples food. Just absolutely wonderful.
The closeness, joviality, robustness, exoticism you name it, i enjoy being around naija people a lot, we know how to make each other laugh. Westerners are so isolated and sensitive about there personal space, meanwhile, in naija you fit just waka go your friend house without even calling him at all, and you fit even crash for the night. In naija we help each other a lot; if your boy no get money you give am or if you no get cash at all go ask "uncle" for cash him go give you. Its not like that here in yanki at all, you can't even give kids money when you visit them like we do in naija.

Even though life in the developed world is better in a lot of aspects, the communal nature here is lacking, for example, in naija we are raised that "it takes a village to raise a child" while in yanki its more like "here is our family and there is everybody else". Also, because everything here is so developed, life can be somewhat monotonous, devoid of drama and spontaniety (e.x of spontaniety is a typical day at Oshodi or Yaba grin grin). The only excitement you get in life is during the weekend (the climax of the week) where you go party and drink and do whatever it is that you derive pleasure from. To be honest, life can be soooooo extremely depressing and loney here, and you wonder why you almost never hear of suicide in naija even though life is hell. Also, life can be somewhat shallow; you wake up in the morning where the neighborhood is usually quietter than a ghost town, you drive to work in your self contained car go buy canned food or eat in a restaurant, then come back home, there are no kids playing on the street in your neighborhood, not a ghost in sight, you don't even know your next door neighbor who has lived next to you for almost 5 years and you wonder why we have crazy people in this country grin This is afterall a society where you even have to pay someone to listen your problems (therapist) and they try to diagnose you with something (bi-polar disorder) so that you buy there drugs and make more money for them. On the other hand, in naija, you tell your friends what you're going through and they usually come up with a solution.
this is so true. you said everything that i was thinking.

i don't think the article said he was booed by nigerians in america. it said that the nigerians danced to the song but the americans just stood there.

RomanceRe: Can U Marry Someone U Met Through The Internet? by naijadiva2(f): 9:46pm On Jan 07, 2008
Siena:
Personally yes, I can.

What folk don't realise is, marrying someone you met on the net, is no different from marrying someone you met in say, a bar, social event, work etc.

If you met someone you'd chatted to / spoken to online / phone, and you felt you wanted to take things further, obviously you'd meet somewhere. At this stage, you're at the stage where you'd be even if you'd never touched a PC in your life.

If after meeting, you both felt confident enough, then you could have a few meetings, meals, then start dating in earnest.

If you met someone at a social gathering, you wouldn't just marry them, you'd date for a while. So, it doesn't matter where I met a lady, I could marry her, if we "clicked".
i'll have to agree that you have some good points but sometimes explaining yourselve over the internet is a lot harder than meeting the person in person. for example, they may explain the way they look to you one way but when you see them face to face, you're like damn.

i think lauren and heidi should become friends again. i like lauren and all but sometimes i feel like she wants to be the one that is always right and good. the reason she is not friends with heidi was because off the rumor but really its because heidi moved out cuz the rumor thing happened when they where still talking. lauren tried to use to rumor as an excuse to not like the girl, but its all stupid.
