Enculer2: The title does say "Nigerian students, others". You did not read that?
Where does it say "only Nigerian students"?
Not all countries are affected the same way. For example, Francophone countries like Senegal have some preferential treatment.
Algeria had a special arrangement.
Nigeria is bottom on the list because it is not Francophone, it is on France's red list for human trafficking and prostitution, organised crime and benefits fraud.
Nigeria has also recently received similar treatment in the UK and so it is correct to highlight Nigeria in the title. Why are people like you always on the side of making Nigeria seem negative. For your information, this has nothing to do with Nigeria. European countries are tightening their borders due to asylum seekers and foreigners who end up becoming a problem to the country. Also, they are trying to curb situations where foreigners end up messing up their social benefits scheme like CAF. |

TheRealestGuy: 🤣 🤣
And you think you're the only one who has travelled?
Funny dude!
Anyway, just to ensure we're not deviating from the point of discussion, I countered your notion that calling an older person by their name is disrespectful.
I maintain that it is not disrespectful in any way and is infact civil and polite.
I also maintain that respect can only be earned by giving it. And that this "culture" of respecting your elders is part of why Africa has largely remained in the 20th century.
It is mental subjugation to insist that everyone younger than you must add a Sir or Ma to your name or call you Aunt or Uncle.
If you know anything about child psychology, you will agree that such subjugation leads to a docile and subservient adult population, which is exactly what Nigerians have become over generations. You only become animated once you or your religion or tribe is "disrespected".
At the end of the day, a culture must be dynamic, and propel its practitioners towards a better future.
I have never alluded to us doing away with our cultural values. Rather, I'm simply advocating for us to continually introspect and improve aspects of our culture that no longer serve us or harm us.
I will leave you with a practical example of how this your concept of respect is a problem.
In the private sector, an overwhelming majority of organisations operate on a first name basis from Board members to the lowest ranked employee. Juxtapose this with the public sector where there's your kind of "respect".
Do you not see the remarkable differences in employee productivity, output and innovation between both sectors?
While the difference in "cultural values" in both sectors is not the sole reason for the marked difference in characteristics and output, it is well known in the business world that "Culture eats Strategy for breakfast".
I rest my case. I won't be lengthy in my response anymore as I see you are just bent on your position. Culture has nothing to do with the backwardness in Africa. There are countries who uphold their culture and still made progress. |
Celebrities › Re: It’s Disrespectful For Young People To Call Me By Name – Shaffy Bello (Video) by Nauttyprof(m): 9:00pm On Dec 02, 2023 |
Miyachi: Did I talk about politics? If you interpreted my post that way, then you are to blame. What I was referring to is how I've seen a lot of older people misbehaving but are given leeway because the are "elders" and I'm not even talking about politics.
You speak of culture as if Nigeria's is homogenous. You've forgotten that what is acceptable in certain parts is completely frowned upon in other parts.
This lady is in entertainment and so she should expect to be referred to by her name. Your fans will not call you Madam or Ma or Mrs. That is all balderdash.
Wasn't the entertainment industry copied from the west, do you see them going about calling there actors Ma, Sir and all?
The black man's mind is so backward and we grasp at very foolish issues and make them seem important. Entertainment never came from the west. We had our unique way of entertainment. We only borrowed their technology and also, brought some improvement to ours This is one of the problem why you never value anything that is ours but seem to see the western practice as being better. Black man's mind isn't backward. If that's the case, we shouldn't have heard of many black men who made giant strides and are recognised globally. Can you see where the issue is with your narrative? Believing anything western is okay but yours is backward. I have been to many countries with technological advancement and yet, still see them uphold their culture with respect and value for the elders. Yet, what we have, we lose it because we want to be like the west. Culture is just a way of life and we should start having the right thoughts about our culture. She expressed her view and she should be respected for this. |
Celebrities › Re: It’s Disrespectful For Young People To Call Me By Name – Shaffy Bello (Video) by Nauttyprof(m): 8:52pm On Dec 02, 2023 |
TheRealestGuy: You're mistaken being civil or polite for respect.
Respect is earned by giving it hence the phrase respect is reciprocal.
No one automatically deserves respect in any situation, except maybe one's parents cos they birthed you but even then, if one's parents consistently disrespect their child then they actually deserve whatever they get.
Your mindset is very disturbing but I'm not surprised - it's what has kept Nigerians in bondage for decades.
People don't speak the truth to criminals in the society in the name of respecting one's elders.
You better wake up and free yourself from such a subservient mentality! It is your mindset that has rather made Nigeria inferior to the western practice. Culture is different from politics. Practicing our culture doesn't mean that truth shouldn't be spoken. It is people like you who have ruined our culture because of seemingly better western practices. You still have the slavery mentality and you need to free yourself from this. So, we are both clear I have travelled out of the shores of Nigeria and I have been to countries technologically advanced, yet, they uphold their culture. It is your mentality that has rather ruined Nigeria. Culture is not politics and it is neither technological development. It is just a way of life. |

TheRealestGuy: Culture of subjugation that never brought any technological or scientific innovation
When did calling people by their name become disrespectful?
Yes I know in some Nigerian cultures, emphasis is placed on using prefixes like Aunty, Uncle, Sir and Ma but all those do not necessarily equal respect.
Respect is usually earned and thus, people may call someone by those prefixes and still disrespect them thoroughly.
For example I've heard so many times where people say "brother yen o gbadun", "iya yen siwin", etc.
Salutation has never meant respect at any time in history but will you learn? Respect is earned has always being the narrative of the disrespectful in many situations I have seen. An adult doesn't have to earn any respect but they deserve the respect irrespective of their character. This is where culture comes in. Culture has nothing to do with technological or scientific development as there is no connection whatsoever. Instead, it is part of societal values. Why are the westerners imbibing our culture now while we are losing ours while copying theirs? Do they want to go backwards technologically by doing this? Going by your own narrative. It's really sad. |
Celebrities › Re: It’s Disrespectful For Young People To Call Me By Name – Shaffy Bello (Video) by Nauttyprof(m): 9:08am On Dec 02, 2023 |
Miyachi: Of what use is culture if it doesn't bring progress. We should have continued the killing of twins and child marriages since they were part of our culture.
State that it's a preference and be done with it but don't come and hide behind culture. Is culture divine, isn't it man-made?
I think too much respect (or reverence) for elders is why we are in such a mess in this country. You see old people misbehaving and you look the other way because they are old.
I don't think there's anything wrong with referring to a person by their name but if it's their preference that I don't, fine. It isn't a dearth of respect on my part. Culture has nothing to do with politics. This is just the usual style of connecting everything to the situation of the country. When has respect for elders stopped the youth from coming out to contest in an election? Or have we not seen some youths who also messed up in politics? Does this have anything to do with culture? It's time we go back to our values and unique culture and create a sane society. It's the disrespect and disregard for our culture that has led to moral decadence in the society and no headway anymore. |
