Politics › Re: Jonathan To Keep Power Portfolio For Now by nduchucks: 1:53pm On Apr 07, 2010
It is rather arrogant of GJ to keep the power portfolio to himself as if he does not have enough to do as acting president.  If he could not find a competent Nigerian for the post, then he himself and his search team are incompetent.

The Americans have pledged their support for immediate assistance in the power sector, GJ needs to allow a minister to handle the executive authorities in that ministry and GJ should focus on getting all the international help we've been promised.  This seems like an attempt to score cheap political points - this is irresponsible!
Politics › Re: Jonathan Moves To Save Yar'Adua by nduchucks: 1:27pm On Apr 06, 2010
There is nothing special about Jonathan's gestures. All the people, including the leadership of the NASS,  who knew the true nature of Yar'Adua's ailments never had any intentions of disgracing him from office through impeachment, otherwise impeachment proceedings would have been instituted long ago.

It suffices to say that GJ will not be the PDP candidate in 2011 because of the unwritten agreement of power sharing. Anyone who believes that the agreement will be revoked to allow GJ to run in 2011 is delusional  The best we can hope for is the postponement of the elections to 2012 or even early 2013, to allow time for proper electoral reforms and needed constitutional reforms to take place.

In the maintime, one would expect Yar'Adua to be taken to the USA for further treatment given the cozy relationship we now have with the US government.
Politics › Kano's Ex-Gov Alhaji Abubakarr Rimi Dies After Armed Robbery Attack by nduchucks(op): 2:04am On Apr 05, 2010

Abubakar Rimi

Second republic politician and former governor of Kano state Alhaji Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi is dead. There is no confirmation of the exact cause of his death as at the time of filing this report.

A source told Saharareporters that Alhaji Rimi was attacked by gunmen in his house and shot but that he died of heart attack. We could not confirm that particular story from family sources.

In January 2006 gunmen believed to be assasins killed his wife at his home. The case took a strange twist when his son was arrested and charged for killing his wife, he was later released before the police commenced trial.

May his soul rest in perfect peace.

Report from thisday below:

Former governor of Kano State and former presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Abubakar Rimi, has died after an armed robbery attack.

He was reportedly unhurt in the encounter with the robbers around 11pm last night. The robbers were said to have recognised him and decided not to rob him. Instead, they seized his phones so that he would not report to the police. On getting to Kano, he was said to have been in shock. His personal doctor, it was gathered, checked his blood pressure and decided to take him to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital. He never recovered and was pronounced dead shortly after. His body has been moved to his residence in Kano and will be buried according to Islamic rites this morning.

Initial reports said he was shot in the head in the attack which took place at a village called Darki in Wudil Local Government Area, Kano State, while he was returning from Bauchi State where he had gone for his eldest daughter's wedding.
But it was later revealed that he suffered no gunshot wounds. However, given that his blood pressure had shot up during the attack, he might have suffered a massive stroke, leading to his death.

The radical politician, who was instrumental to the victory of Chief MKO Abiola in the June 12, 1993 presidential election in Kano State, was travelling in a Landcruiser SUV in company with three other persons

No need to kill yourself over @ndu chucks commentary. He was thesame person who vehemently claimed that Yar Adua had given Johnathan the power to act in his place.
Sky Blue, You keep referring to the post wherin you asked for Yar'Adua's signature to confirm that he recognized GJ as acting President. This is disingenuous of you since we all know that a signed statement was not issued. Yar'Adua did not need to give GJ presidential powers anyway. None of these should prevent you from showing some compassion.

N'du chuks have said what we all dread to hear, IBB will win the 2011 election next year if he is allowed to run. Unfortunately the internet antogonist constitute only about 3% of the Nigerian populace, the majority of Nigerians being that we have a very high illetracy levels will vote for this inglorius and insatiable rogue.

It would be a hard sell, selling the idea of IBB as President to SW after the Abiola Imbroglio, obviously for highly and a political dinosour like IBB to come to lowly Gbenga Daniel's birthday speaks volume. It is clear the role people like GD, Akala, and the Oshun man would play in the forth coming elections, these men would be the Regimental Seargeant Major (RSM ) for the IBB campaign, they would not only make a killing in terms of funds required by inflating the pivotal role they will play in installing massers IBB as the King of Aso rock, they would also have assumed that sacred post of Oyo-mesi or King makers as with the old Oyo empire.

It would take an opposition of magnanimous profile to counter what will surely be a landslide even in the dreaded backyard of M.K.O. Abiola, I am not happy at this prospect, but being a realist, It would be dishonourable to ignore a trend that has bedevilled our democracy since 1999.

What we should pray for is for him not to contest, that is 150 million Nigerians should embark on a prayer feast, after all 13 months is still a long way. A prayer pursued with vigour and gust now would definately come to fruition in the weeks, months and year to come.

So lets get started.  huh
You have eloquently stated what I've been attempting to tell these people. Most of them are in denial and they let their emotions becloud their objectivity.

Is Aso Rock the new cantonement for gravely ill people? Has it occured to you that those who loot in the name of Yar'adua do so because he is in Aso Rock? Have you ever called for his relocation to Katsina? Can we assume that all those who have opposed the legitimate removal of Yar'adua from Aso Rock are simply aiding and abating crime and theft? because it is because he is still in Aso Rock thats why people continue to steal in his name.
There is nothing in the constitution that states that a sick President must be removed from office. He is sick and getting treated, Shikena. He belongs in Aso Rock, that is where our Presidents reside.

All the people who are committing crimes in Yar'Adua's name should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The FEC and NASS can remove Yardy from office if they deem it necessary. My bet is that, he will not be removed from office.

They risk undermining that interest and their political capital if they openly endorse a candidate very controversial that may not reflect the will of the people.

US and UK will rather remain quiet and work with whoever emerges leader than openly endorse IBB.
Don't expect the US to openly endorse IBB's candidacy. If they indeed support IBB, they will send him strong signals and support privately. The Shah of Iran was supported by the USA for years with the knowledge of the looting he perpetrated against the Iranian people - again self interest is the key.

Not perfect, but the only northern politician I see with any possibility of making Nigeria better at this point is El Rufai. I wish he would come out with a serious agenda or else take his name out of the running. May be I am ignorant. If so, please provide more information as Nigerians should not be taken on another useless ride.
El-Rufai's may have lost his rights to run for any elective office in Nigeria because he was indicted by a senate panel on the sale of government houses in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), banning him from holding public office for life.
Hopefully he can get the ban overturned in court.  He is not quite as popular in the North, by the way.  Ribadu probably stands a better chance.

@mikeansy, keep in mind that the number one motivation for the USA as well as most other countries, is self interest. Think about it.

3. why have they involved imams?
Item 1: You say, "we've been lied to for too long e.t.c. e.t.c "

The question is who has been lying to you? It certainly has not been the gravely ill Yar'Adua.

Item2: You write: "have you ever thought of the possibility that this may turn out to be one huge ploy to keep siphoning security votes e.t.c"

Whoever is behind this huge ploy is not the gravely ill Yar'Adua

For one thing, we know that the US sent emmissaries to Minna, when high level officials visited Nigeria. That to me is a show of some sort of support. It has also been reported that the US and UK are conducting surveys on behalf of IBB.

how is ibb 'uniquely qualified' to rule nigeria when he was the one that drove to the sorry state of her economy
I believe the man has learnt from his past errors and he has nothing to gain at this point but a great legacy for himself. He can put the millitary in check in this civilian dispensation. Note that I am not in any way saying that I support IBB's candidacy.

how has he suddenly become a true democrat when he anulled a credible election
We no longer have millitary rule in Nigeria, he has to become a "democrat" to participate despite the annulment history. People like you and I are the ones that need to respect the principles of democracy enough to allow every constitutionally eligible candidate to participate in the process. We show our disapproval through our votes. I don't know whether you live in Nigeria, but I can tell you that the man enjoys the support of the electorate nation-wide.

Time will tell whether he will contest, I like his new found views on federalism e.t.c. Let's hope other potential candidates will come up with similar or better ideas.

While IBB is "hated" by most "educated" internet warriors, the truth of the matter is that, the man enjoys the support of a majority of the electorate (the voting public).  He is revered by voters from the North to the East, West to the South and is one of the few Nigerians who can win a free and fair election in a landslide victory.

Like him or hate him, IBB is uniquely qualified to take Nigeria to the "promised lands".  His ability to put the millitary and the "cabal under control is a big plus.

IBB is saying the right things at the moment including, stating that fiscal federalism, state police and indeed a national conference are needed in nigeria.  He even enjoys the support of the USA and EU.

I believe if IBB decides to run for office in 2011, he may very well win, despite criticisms by internet warriors.

Politics is a flowing river. If Jonathan made deals with people, they have been kicked out of govt (quite unceremonously too); so what is left of those "deals"?
Everything comes in its own time. The only calculation is the army, the cabal has absolutely nothing else to bargain with. . . But Jonathan can checkmate that with a little ingenuity, then the big "IF" would become a nonexistent "if".

Jonathan has the right temperament and approach to confound the cabals for centuries.
I partially agree with your statements. Jonathan is uniquely positioned to checkmate the "cabal" but I don't believe he is that adventurous and power hungry.  If his list of ministers is anything to go by, there will be no checkmating of the cabal. Yardy will remain in the whitehouse (aso rock) until further notice. As long as Bankole and David Mark still hold their powers, there will be no impeachment. Trust me on this.
