The South African Nobel-prize-winning author Nadine Gordimer, one of the literary world's most powerful voices against apartheid, has died at the age of 90, her family say. Gordimer died peacefully at her Johannesburg home on Sunday evening in the presence of her children, Hugo and Oriane, a statement from the family said. Born in Gauteng, South Africa, in 1923 to immigrant European parents, Gordimer was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 1991 for novels and short stories that reflected the drama of human life and emotion in a society warped by decades of white-minority rule. Many of her stories dealt with the themes of love, hate and friendship under the pressures of the racially segregated system that ended in 1994, when Nelson Mandela became South Africa's first black president. She was called one of the great "guerrillas of the imagination" by the poet Seamus Heaney, and a "magnificent epic writer" by the Nobel committee. Gordimer became active in the then banned African National Congress after the Sharpeville massacre, and was one of the first people Mandela asked to see when he was released in 1990. "She cared most deeply about South Africa, its culture, its people and its on-going struggle to realize its new democracy," the family statement said. She had three books banned under the apartheid regime's censorship laws, along with an anthology of poetry by black South African writers that she collected and had published. The first book to be banned was A World of Strangers, the story of an apolitical Briton drifting into friendships with black South Africans in segregated Johannesburg in the 1950s. In 1979 Burger's Daughter was banished from the shelves for its portrayal of a woman's attempt to establish her own identity after her father's death in jail makes him a political hero. In later years, Gordimer became a vocal campaigner in the HIV/AIDS movement, lobbying and fund-raising on behalf of the Treatment Action Campaign, a group pushing for the South African government to provide free, life-saving drugs to sufferers. Nor did she shy away from criticising the ANC under Jacob Zuma, expressing her opposition to a proposed law which limits the publication of information deemed sensitive by the government. Lol, Brothers...I'm not doubting the authencity of you people's contribution @ beebee5000 and Nimakor. Like I said, I did mine in the east except you people are saying that the high court here is fake, then whenever I come to lagos, I will still re-do it. And Yes, the age declaration was deposed by the head of family being my father. I did one first at the magistrate court when I wanted to get a passport from the Immigration service and even that one, they didn't request for passport photo and to be on the safe side because someone advised it must be from high court, I still did another one of recent. abiegirl, since you're in Lagos, do follow what they advised. abiegirl: I wonder as well. Which court did you do yours and when was this?I reside in the east, so its at the high court at the state capital. I did mine on 3rd July... Na Lagos you dey do your own? I hope its high court though... If that's much trouble for you, why not google NPC location of where you reside or ask people around, they will direct you. My friend did his birth certificate from NPC here in Enugu at 2500 and no such thing as providing passport even at the NPC. |

Realk1: Ok, thanks. Which did u use? And how easy is it to do the age declaration thingy...?I did mine with just 1K. It might vary according to location. Walk into any high court close to where you reside. I am going to use an age declaration. It won't even take an hour before it gets done. Don't worry...Just provide them with the necessary information and sign then you're good to go. 1 Like |

abiegirl: Okay, I've been booked for 16th of July. I went through the list of required documents and I can see primary school certificate. I am not sure I have that and my primary school is not in Lagos. Is it absolutely necessary to have that or will the WAEC certificate suffice. I am going for a masters program. Please help a sister out.Yours was rather too early. Go to high court and swear an affidavit that it has lost then make sure you get your testimonial as supporting document to it and proof that you went to primary school. Those people not asked about their First School leaving certificate was probably an oversight and you might not be that lucky as they stated that ''If your documents are not in order or incomplete, you will not be accepted for an interview.'' |

@ sapphire2sap When they sent you email of your interview, did they state time of the interview or is there an expected time for you to arrive for the interview. Why I asked is that I noticed they're strict with time. |
