OH YES WE CAN. It is that typically defeatist male pessimism that has held Nigeria back for 50 yrs. Electricity, water, telephone, roads etc can all be done within the given time frame.

It's called MULTI-TASKING! Something men know very little about
can you answer a question for me?
do you have any idea how long the waiting period for a turbine is? not to mention the time it'd take to build a power station. you dont seem to realise that making unguarded statements will only serve to rubbish your claims(as well as your reputation.)

in order to prove a point, you have made claims concerning matters that you have little or no understanding about(i'll go with 'no'. . .i'm not feeling nice today undecided) my only problem with you is this: where did you get those timeframes from?

are you an engineer? how much do you know about electricity, light and water? how much do you even know about nigeria? how will multitasking solve those problems? as a prospective voter, i have a right to know so i can be sure you aren't as useless as the men

ComputersRe: I Need Your Quick Help On This Please by netotse(m): 11:25pm On Apr 05, 2010

A while ago, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around from then on.

As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind, he had a special niche. My parents were complementary instructors: Mom taught me good from evil, and Dad taught me to obey. But the stranger, he was our storyteller. He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies.

If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always knew the answers about the past, understood the present and even seemed able to predict the future! He took my family to the first major league ball game. He made me laugh, and he made me cry. The stranger never stopped talking, but Dad didn't seem to mind.

Sometimes, Mom would get up quietly while the rest of us were shushing each other to listen to what he had to say, and she would go to the kitchen for peace and quiet. (I wonder now if she ever prayed for the stranger to leave.)

Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions, but the stranger never felt obligated to honor them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our home, Not from us, our friends or any visitors. Our longtime visitor, however, got away with four-letter words that burned my ears and made my dad squirm and my mother blush. My Dad didn't permit the liberal use of alcohol. But the stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular basis. He made cigarettes look cool, cigars manly and pipes distinguished.

He talked freely (much too freely!) about intimacy. His comments were sometimes blatant, sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing.

I now know that my early concepts about relationships were influenced strongly by the stranger. Time after time, he opposed the values of my parents, yet he was seldom rebuked, And NEVER asked to leave.

More than fifty years have passed since the stranger moved in with our family. He has blended right in and is not nearly as fascinating as he was at first. Still, if you could walk into my parents' den today, you would still find him sitting over in his corner, waiting for someone to listen to him talk and watch him draw his pictures.

His name?

We just call him 'TV.'

(Note: This should be required reading for every household!)

He has a wife now, We call her 'Computer.'

Their first child is "Cell Phone".

Second child "I Pod"
i dont do business with your stranger, but i'm having an affair with his wife and his first child's my booty call, i pick her up when i need to get my rocks off!

PoliticsRe: Electricity Tariff Set To Rise by netotse(m): 3:10pm On Mar 31, 2010
Afam:
Your logic is fundamentally flawed for the following reasons

1. After I insisted on actual reading my monthly bill was hovering between N300.00 and N450.00 per month for years.

2. It is almost impossible for PHCN to give a customer a monthly estimated bill of N300.00 or N450.00 and as such any estimation would amount to robbery.

3. If PHCN wants to conserve labour it should not be at the detriment of the paying customer who may consistently consume far less than what they are being billed for.

So, instead of opposing things for the sake of doing so I will advice you to respect facts especially when they are glaring.

Less than 2 weeks ago I asked PHCN what it would take to convert to a 3 phase meter and I was told that I needed to pay N55,000.00 for the meter and since the meters are not readily available they will be providing estimated bill until the meter is installed.

I asked them to give me an idea of the estimated bill and the oga there said about N3,500.00 per month. I told him that the less than N2,500.00 I recharged the last time lasted for 2 years 2 months and he was like it was not possible and I took time to lecture him about the many advantages of energy efficiency.

N3,500.00 x 26 months = N91,000.00 and yet for the same time period I spent under N2,500.00 even though it was for a single phase.

There is no justification for estimation considering the fact that it is the same distance and energy that those who bring the bills would cover by coming to read the meters.
@Afam
you should know you aren't just 'anybody'.

1.your situation is the exception(heck if i didn't know of you i'd say you were lying, i still find it hard to believe). correct me if i'm wrong, you aren't using a fridge or an air conditioner, infact all you use is prolly only illumination.

2.how many nigerians are aware of the term energy efficiency not to mention practising it sef? better still, how many PHCN officials know the term?(sad abi?)

3.to my knowledge, they simply cannot afford the costs associated with sucha venture, it's the same thing with the water bill, how easy do u think it is to walk up and down streets er'day? how much are they being paid sef? (is i said in a previous post, i am against estimated billing o!)

the fact is that the average nigerian is extremely wasteful when it comes to using electricity(i'm sure you agree with the foregoing) and i'm sure that's what nex had in mind. If we have to estimate, then it should be done properly, i.e. taking into cognizance the appliances the consumer has in his house, PHCN doesn't do this(frankly i think it's either because they're too lazy or it's the square pegs in round holes thingy).

the oga was merely conjecturing, based on past experience(which he prolly has a lot of), as i've stated before, you are an exception and if things were considered from a statistical viewpoint, then your case wouldn't matter, because it's a drop in a pond. I can only imagine what the lecture was like for him, i'm sure you've been told before sha, you have a way of making it seem like you're condescending when you argue(dont know if thats the right word) as in, at times i imagine you having a look of disdain on your face as you type.

you're right, it's wrong to compare a 3 phase bill with a single phase bill.(i'm ashamed to say i really have no idea what the diff is btw having a single phase or having 3 phases supply in your house)

the problem with having your meter read every month is the frequency of trips required, bringing the bills is only once a month, but having the meters read in addition to dropping bills, would require an additional trip, thus increasing the strain on the workers, which ideally should lead to an increase in pay.

however on my estate in abuja, our meters were read every month while we used prepaid meters, so i'm guessing the decision to read or not to read the meters lies in the hands of the business manager or CEO.

lastly, do u have any info on energy efficiency that'd be useful? that's what i want to specialize in

@ the solar advocates.
the cost of solar in developed countries can be twice as expensive as energy from conventional sources, now when i say this bear in mind that they are closer to the plants where the solar cells are manufactured, so to implement solar on an appreciable scale back here, we would have to add transportation costs to the equation.

PoliticsRe: Electricity Tariff Set To Rise by netotse(m): 9:00pm On Mar 29, 2010
i'm liking this thread, at least the ppl here. . .

first things first, if i remember correctly the tariff isn't 6.40 sef, it's somewhere around 10.00-11.50, (there's a subsidy), then of course, the most important part,

@er'one saying it's too much
do you know that the 6.40/kwh you're paying now is far less than the cost of production per kwh? even the 8.50/kwh wont recover the costs. . .,

this is for the pro-privatisation group;
sey u see how people are complaining now? this is the reason why government hasn't privatised PHCN and it's successor companies since, if they come in, they wont be able to charge tariffs commensurate to their costs unlike the telecomms revoluton where the first (and probably only) thing on the telcos minds was recouping their investments.

that said

@afam
you actually called PHCN ppl daft? it's obvious we cant be friends. . .lol

that said, yes i think it's wrong for PHCN to estimate bills, if we nigerians were serious ppl, the NLC or some body would take the matter up seriously, then by the time PHCN sees the drop in it's revenue due to the widespread use of prepaid meters, they'll have one more reason to get their act right!
p.s.
why is it that even with the estimation sef, new users of the prepaid meters are usually shocked by the consumption rate? methinks it just goes to show that most consumers are not aware of how much electricity they consume, in addition to proving that in some cases the estimation works against PHCN

@netoste, I read all your post in reply to my last post and just felt that i should leave you alone because u are just a small boy with a lot of youthful exuberance and have been corrupted by your civil service parents who have in their little way contributed to the mess we are in as a country, so your coming out in this forum to defend civil servants is understood.

What was the originating post and where did all this talk start from before you jumped in with your "i too know" itching fingers and typing your stupidity away.

The issue here is that workers threatened to go on strike if a particular minister was re-appointed for them, that threat has nothing to do with professionalism, facts or solving the power crisis but it was all about sentiments and emotions, should workers be the ones to determine who their bosses would be? I know you can answer in the affirmative at least may be that was how your parents were selecting the ministers and permanent secs they worked with i*d*i*o*t.
So rounding off all your blabbing with who really cares if the workers have a moral right or not just shows your "oversabi" mentality.

Well if u must know I am an engineer and the issue has not warranted a show off of my understanding of the engineering practise.

You can start your own thread and maybe ask if people like your parents should be honored for their services to this country by their contributions in the civil service, by the way which ministry did your parents serve in?
