kay9: @V: of course he has a point! What do you think i am, dumb? I just don't agree with him is all.
Thanks for the advice, but the truth is i'm a likkle unhinged too myself. Heard it from parents, friends, collegues - even enemies have promised me retribution in the form of an unexpected police brouhaha. But one thing has always been my driving force: The man died in him who keeps silent in the face of oppression (- George Mangakis)
Now don't get me wrong Neto; i admit it was pretty petty picking a case with those mopol officers over something that wasn't even my business - that's why i was glad when it was over. And yes, talking back at mopols is about the most risky thing a person can do in Nigeria. But to suggest that one shouldn't mess with them cos they're insane - now that to me is as bad as condoning their unlawful actions (how else are they gonna know they are wrong if no one is bold enough to tell them otherwise??).
The Nigerian policeman has a lot of things to deal with. Agreed, but does that IN ANY WAY justify taking it out on the ordinary citizen? Lets be sincere, the typical "mmofo" abuses your right because he can do it, and you can't do jack s.H!t about it; it has little to do with his bad work conditions. Shrinks all over the world will tell you that the ONLY way to handle a bully is to stand up to him; you might go home with a broken nose, but you can be assured he's not gonna be bothering you much anymore.
Nigerian mopols aren't primary school bullies; they are grown men toting around AK-47s, each with a screw or two loose in his head. So what it boils down to is this: You can pick courage and tell them they are wrong, and either smile away triumphant, or take a bullet in the tommy and die (i ain't kidding). OR you can meekly keep quiet and be treated like a 2nd class human being. The choice is yours; but i'll be damned if i'm going to let the man in me die.
One last thing; we all wish SOMEONE will make these mopols stop maltreating citizens and respect their rights. Now, go back and ask yourself: WHO IS "SOMEONE"? @kay we're all diff sha. . .i guess i just have a thing for 'underdogs', i know how to handle policemen. . .lol(cant remember the last time i 'rogered'). . .truth is they are human beings jst like you, and they've had a rough deal, imagine being paid peanuts and expected to run towards gunfire, and it's not even as if the people you're supposed to protect appreciate it sef, (when last did you say anything nice about the NPF?) the same pple(us) routinely curse and insult them(sometimes even to their faces) and you now expect them to like you?imagine if doctors were cursed as much, or nurses, how would their bedside manner be? we nigerians are quick to abuse the police but if there is a call for recruitment how many of us will answer? we're leaving jobs as important as that to illiterates and 'ne'er do wells', so what's happening now is simply sowing what we have reaped.(i know cos i considered joining the police, but my liver no complete. . .lol) it's simple logic, if you treat me well, i'm more likely to respond humanely, but if i know you're likely to curse me the moment you leave my presence(and u were prolly cursing me before) why on earth should i treat you like a human being? na me be Jesus? who is on their side sef? not us(the public) and def not the criminals, so they have no support system cos even their bosses dont give a shit. . .we've made them AK47-carrying maniacs. Dont get me wrong, there are times when what you did would be the right thing to do, if you disrespect me, imma put you in your place nicely(no time!). But stereotyping all policemen doesnt make sense, what if the guy your being rude to is one of the goodguys?(and there are good guys in the NPF), we're more likely to hear bad news about them than we are to hear about the good things they've done. that said. . .i totally acknowledge that 90% of the NPF is going to hell if you're up for some reading, here are two articles written by nigerians on the NPF that tell the story different from what we're used to. this and this one too@er'one sorry for the long post, only two organizations can make me go off like this PHCN and NPF, |

marvix: @netoste, are the union leaders justified in their threat to shut down power if Babalola is reappointed? Is it possible that this union leaders are not happy with Babalola because of his disturbance of their daily bread? Can d union truly cast the first stone? Should we not be more interested in why they are prepared to go on fasting so he does not come back but never thot of something like this when Imoke held sway? Do u really think that while he was minister he wasn't comited to solve the power crisis? I'm waiting for your answers. he is corrupt and incompetent, how do u expect an economist to run a company full of engineers? all he knows how to say is 'gas', 'gas', 'gas'. . .he cant be disturbing their daily bread, he's a political appointee they come and go, do u know how they look at them in the civil service? 'let the nuisance come and make his noise, sebi he will eventually leave and i will still be here'. . .the man doesnt know how to think in terms of the power sector, our problems are not economic, they are planning and engineering problems. how on earth is an economist supposed to understand them?. . . they didn't make this much noise during imoke cos imoke is the minister that has done the most work in the power sector(he was a lawyer sef) you're an outsider so you wont understand, but most of what you see now, all the new stations came about under imoke. . .can u mention any sensible thing yar' adua (and his ilk) has done in the power sector? if not for OBJ, the 200-and-something MW you're getting wouldn't even be possible. . . i'm sure you didnt read the 234NEXT articles i pasted links to. . .in a report attached to the articles you'll see the highest generation in the history of naija was under imoke(OBJ) 35XXMW or something like that. who cares if he was committed? he didnt know what to do, or how to do it, i said it earlier, i knew in SEPTEMBER that 6000MW was a lie, and even if it appeared by magic, our transmission network wouldnt have been able to wheel it, people expected more from him since he has a degree in a power related field(so much for a PhD in power system economics), but his foundation is faulty, we dont need number crunchers in the power sector! you might argue that his not being an engineer doesnt count, but why wont we have a non-medical person as a min of health? or a non finiancial person as a minister of finance? it's because we take those ministries serious. . .until we start taking power serious in nigeria nothing significant will change, throwing money at the power sector wont solve the problems, govt can make all the money available and we'll just keep supplying governors. . .lol. truth is for those that know, the NESI(nigerian el supply industry) is a cash cow, power is extremely capital intensive, far more than telecomms et al. so there's a lot of money available for embezzling, so there are a lot of people that want in on the action, and govt. is playing politics with power in nigeria, how else do u explain not having a professional as minister since 1999? it's only ppl with political clout we've had! those crying deregulation should shut the hell up!. . .the power sector cant be deregulated just like that, if it was, your nepa bill would more than triple and it's the same people that'd be crying murder. P.S. i'm not an imoke fan, it was under him power stations were built without pipelines to supply the full the turbines would use, others were built without transmission lines to evacuate the power generated, stations were built in places where they had no roads to transport the turbines to the power stations but he was better than babalola hands down! |

marvix: @oyb I must tell u that within 2004 and now a lot has changed even though we still have proxies there is now at least an order to the madness. If u are interested in a big ticket transaction you must go thru some proces and the proxies come into play here and everything is involved in computin d cost. A project cld be given for 2b but d job will only cost .5b so that is d prob now and union members in PHCN are not innocent in all this sometimes they are d conduit, that is y I believe that their case is just d case of a kettle calling the pot black. Do they d union workers love us more than the minister? i just spent a year in PHCN and i still maintain you dont know what you're talking about! so if the ministers girlfriend imports the wrong equipment who are you as a bloody civil servant to withhold her payment? you will just earn yourself unnecessary query, plus transfer to hell! the union leaders are far from being saints but the corruption they indulge in, pales in comparison to what the ministers get up to. apart from the ministry of power, can u name any other ministry that can boast of having provided enough funds for 2 ministers to run for governor? (yep, we in the power sector are generous like that). . .someone once explained it to me like this. . .they come in and see so much money, and they start stealing, and after stealing, they now try to do some work with the funds left, eventually they realise it wont work and this is when they resort to substandard equipment. . . all the unions can do is call strikes, finish! so they cant be accused of mismanaging the sector! |

spicymum: @ busybody, chaircover, hotstepper, analytical, InesQor, hispinkolo, Mhismole, demdem and everyone else who took the time to provide very, very thoughtful responses to me on this thread: THANK YOU.
@busybody: I am actually very close to his mum. But he HATES it when you get her or anyone else involved in his biz. Thats y I had been feeling so handicapped; its just me and him here. But he wont talk to me, has completely shut me out so ,
No. He is still not talking to me (I called him yesterday and he still wont pick my calls. He didnt even call to say "happy mother's day"; in the past, he would never miss celebrating a special day in our lives.) That notwithstanding, I feel a lot lighter. And happier too! I have been singing all day!!!
In the recent past, I had been feeling so angry, disappointed, betrayed , it had affected aspects of my life. I didnt bother saying all that earlier, but I had been feeling particularly betrayed cos I met my husband when we were in college and he had little to call his own at the time. I did everything for him, including cook his meals in my parents house and take to him in his off campus residence (about 4 times a week, for a very longgg time). I did his laundry, everything. And I was not the kind of lady who you would expect to be making anyone's bed (I dont mean this in an offensive or arrogant way.) I did not even need to do my own laundry in my parents house. My friends ALWAYSSS made fun of me, I didnt realy care. As I was saying, in the recent past, I secretly felt like now he was doing very well, he seemed to have thrown away all the memories of those times we spent in his place with no GSM, only an 8inch TV and VCD, no big gadgets like he collects now and we still spent quality time together.
Now, I feel like a burden has been lifted off my back. I was at church today and the preacher talked about how Moses took the children of Isreal out of Egypt. He kept refering to somewhere in Exodus 14, where Moses told the Isrealites to stand still and see the salvation of the Lord. He kept repeating one verse: "The Egyptians you see today, you shall see them no more". I dont mean to preach and no offence to the non-christians here, but I believe that God has used you thoughtful people on this forum and his preacher today to reach out to me. It helps immensely to get the view and thoughts of other people who might be analysing the situation from a different perspective than mine. Plus, I strongly believe some of the advice I recieved here came from experience. Thank you.
I am almost afraid to call my husband now, cos I expect him to NOT pick the phone. But I will try and work on our relationship, with less anger and feelings of disaapointment. I will try. i'm rooting for you 100%, will add you in my prayers for what it's worth! @chaircover no wonder er'one loves u. . .lol @busybody now i see y u are my 7th 1 and only. . .you have to let us know the expo you used to get into the guy's head! |

Freestyl: The on-going scramble for positions in a soon to be reconstituted Federal cabinet could shortly hit a brick wall because President Umaru Yar’adua intends to resume duties in his office next week, a top source close to the ailing president told Daily Trust yesterday. However, another family source separately told Daily Trust that Yar’adua will be fit to resume work by the end of next month.
According to the top sources, Yar’adua intends to make a national radio and television broadcast to signal his resumption of work as early as Monday or Wednesday next week. They said Yar’adua may not write a letter to the National Assembly intimating it of his return because he did not transmit a letter before he proceeded on medical vacation, even though his spokesman later said Yar’adua recognised Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as the Acting President.
Both sources said Yar’adua has made much progress physically since his return to the country late last month, and that his remaining medical problem now is speech-related. The sources said the ailing president now walks around the house and also around the garden, where there are many birds and animals.
They said Yar’adua brought a speech therapist with him from the Saudi Arabian hospital and the doctor has been working since then to improve his speech. Both sources said he has made progress in his speech. One of the sources told Daily Trust that Yar’adua’s return to the country last month was “premature,” and that he was brought back before he finished his therapy “for political reasons.”
In the last two weeks, Daily Trust learnt that Yar’adua received several visiting family members, close friends, some political associates, some state governors and also some personal staff, even though he has not yet met with Acting President Goodluck Jonathan. Jonathan and his wife, Dame Patience, however visited the residence and they met with Hajia Turai Yar’adua.
The sources said Yar’adua’s seclusion since his return to the country was ordered by the Saudi doctors because he suffered a severe infection while at the Saudi hospital when he received some visitors. The people who have been able to meet with him after his return, the sources said, were made to go through some disinfecting chambers before they were ushered into his presence. Those procedures have ended now, the sources said.
According to our sources, Yar’adua is not happy with the Acting President for sacking his aides, instituting a probe of his regime’s contract awards and dissolving his council of ministers. It is therefore likely that his resumption of work would severely upstage the on-going selection of new ministers by the Acting President.
Yar’adua first left the country for medical treatment in Saudi Arabia on November 21, last year and returned to the country after 93 days. While he was away, the National Assembly adopted a unanimous resolution in early February to recognise the Vice President as Acting President, despite Yar’adua’s failure to transmit a letter of medical vacation in line with Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution.
Since Yar’adua’s return to the country, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has continued to run the country and has carried out many far-reaching political measures, including dissolving the Federal cabinet last Wednesday.

marvix: @netose, nobody in this country can claim he knows the power problems in and out. If they don't want babalola they should quit if babalola is reapointed and not disturb us with their noise. The real problem of d power sector can never be who the minister is. The power problem in dis country can only be solved by teamwork, so pls we can change the minister and the new minister on resuming should start by sackin the union leaders. i'm putting you in the 'bola ige' class, (pple that refuse to take the time to understand issues at play before talking/acting), do the workers decide where the money goes? sign contracts? all the workers do is maintain and operate the equipment, while it is safe to say that PHCN is corrupt and all that, saying PHCN workers are the reason that nigeria doesn't have constant electricity is a sure sign of ignorance. . .the problems nigeria is facing now, were caused by the leadership(specifically the military) but the politicians have not really helped matters either, they've spent a lot of money alright, but an equal amount has gone into private pockets(guess whose?) the problem can never be the minister?when bola ige promised constant electricity in 6months(like most nigerians i believed him), he and OBJ then proceeded the import a lot of transformers(which wont have helped anyway) but guess what? the transformers they imported weren't suited for the NEPS, the minister can never be the problem you say. . .there has never been a minister of power that has worked A DAY in the power sector since and yet you expect them to formulate and apply policy that will move the sector forward abi? the new minister should sack the unions? i'm starting to think you dont know much about the way labour works(or even the way nigeria works), the new minister CANNOT sack the union leadership, do you have any idea what it would take to do that?(esp for unions like the NUEE), that's one of the biggest jokes i've heard in a while. . . |

Are the members of the union telling us that a man who was minister for about 24mths is responsible for power failures or is it those workers at d power station who can switch off power for just any flimsy excuse? while i agree that the leadership of the unions should be changed, i must say, your post shows how little you know about the electricity sector and electricity in general! |

Jarus: I actually based my comment on what Ijeoma Nwogwugwu, that brilliant Economist, journalist and columnist with ThisDay, who I respect so much(although we adisagree sharply on SLS) used to write about him. Secondly, he comes across as a refined, brilliant, soft-spoken technocrat that has a great grasp of energy political economy. I'm surprised with what you said about him now. yes, but we don't need an economist in the power ministry, the problem isn't strictly a money problem, i like ijeoma too,(dont know y she's against this NITEL sale though), but on the babalola issue we part ways, having read a number of reports doesnt give you the required knowledge or skill to solve the power sectors problems, i didnt place much stock in them, but did you hear the rumours that she was defending babalola when he first got into office cos she wanted to get a job with him(i think they've had some dealings at BPE or something). one major part of the problem is that all you outsiders(no offense meant) think you appear out of nowhere and solve the power sectors problems without even understanding what the sector is all about, that's how bola ige promised steady light in 6months when it was(and still is) not possible in 6years. naijaking1: It simply beats the imagination that useless unions that produces nothing but darkness for Nigerians should threaten "black-out" What an irony Where were the unions when they realized that the 6000mw objectice would not be met? as far back as october, i pasted it in the welcome to my office thread that the 6000MW goal wasn't going to happen, you dont expect workers to come out and announce something different from what their boss has announced do u? u sef check am, if u can think back that far, did any technical staff of PHCN come out to announce anything about the 6000mw? it's only the politicians and govt appointees that were making noise about it(and of course u ppl listened to them. . .) p.s. anyone that contradicted the minister would have been branded a saboteur and summarily fired, i know that for a fact! |
