Hi guys, I have 4 admission offers to study in the UK (September 2021 intake). I was hoping to get the Chevening scholarship but didn't make it past the first stage.
I can only afford the £2,000 deposit, but can't afford the full tuition fee for any of the schools (least is £14,000), and it's even scary when converted to naira.

Please, what advice can you offer me?

Why?
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Apply For 2019 NNPC Graduate Trainee And Experience Hire by NigelCundy: 11:01am On Aug 10, 2020
I acquired skills in tech and there are tons of fields that one could explore. I wouldn't want to say exactly the field I chose so it doesn't influence someone and they end up not getting what they expected. For instance, you can explore coding, design, data and see which of these fields align with your skills and interests.
Develop by taking courses on learning platforms like coursera, IBM, Udacity etc, watch YouTube videos (highly recommended), and most importantly work on personal projects to develop your portfolio.

Once you have a portfolio, even if it's one project, make sure people know what you do. Don't be ashamed of your work or be intimidated by others who have started before you, there's always someone who will be willing to take a chance on you, but they have to know you first. So, hype yourself everywhere on social media while you're developing yourself.

Good luck.

Would you mind to share with us the kind of skills you acquired that gave you the jobs and projects.... Others might also benefit from your experience! Aluta continua!!

Jobs/VacanciesRe: Apply For 2019 NNPC Graduate Trainee And Experience Hire by NigelCundy: 1:05pm On Aug 06, 2020
Hey guys, I thought I should come back to share my story for those who'll come here in the future.

Some months ago, I was among the hopefuls waiting for the almighty APL. I literally centered the whole of my existence around something so uncertain... do I regret? I'm not even sure because the experience I gathered from this thread pushed me for what's to come.

When the APL came, my name and that of my 3 friends from OAU who'd attended the interview were all missing. The difference was they all had good jobs at the time, but I was at home bantering on twitter and nairaland hoping luck will shine on me. After people started getting mails, my depression started setting in, I was grieving the APL that never came! I was sad, tired, and ready to give in to terrible thoughts. After 48 hours, I picked myself up and said F**U**C**K** it. I withdrew from everything and went back to the learning I was doing in tech before the obsession with nairaland and APL.

Five months later, I made my first million from a project I secured...from a client in the UK. Worthy to note that this was my first paid project. Then, last night, I got a remote job with a company in the UK where I'll be earning what I couldn't have imagined I would some six months ago.

So, I woke up this morning remembering that period when it was like my life had come to an end over an uncertain thing...an APL. I decided it'll be criminal not to share my story and I hope someone finds this experience of mine valuable and move on in life....even while you're waiting.

Thanks to everyone that made those months of waiting interesting: the associations for their banter and oga Jarus for his constant help.

Stay Safe!!!!!

We can't get stuck in the past. I've also developed the attitude of trying as many things as possible.

Thank you bro.

I actually do have some experience under my belt which is what got me the job in the first place. I don't have responsibilities for now.
Not even that of girlfriend sef grin
Thank you.

Assuming you aren't under any pressure to pay bills at home and u don't have any responsibilities take the first one. Use it to build yourself up especially if u don't any previous experience

Thanks for this brilliant idea.

BenFlash:
You are welcome. While you are at it, ensure you invest part of the remaining 33k in developing yourself (IT skill is bae it stands, the world is going techy everyday). If possible, do not disclose your true salary to your family otherwise you'll end up being the good (but secretly frustrated) son/daughter. Act wisely
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Apply For 2019 NNPC Graduate Trainee And Experience Hire by NigelCundy: 6:03pm On Feb 18, 2020
Thanks bro.

BenFlash:
Case 2 does not exist yet, grab the one you have for now until something better comes up. Forget the pay, you are still very young, training and experience matters more now, when you acquire enough skill and experience, then you can pilot your career choice. Trust me, it is better than sitting at home and waiting for what may not eventually come. Good luck
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Apply For 2019 NNPC Graduate Trainee And Experience Hire by NigelCundy: 5:54pm On Feb 18, 2020
Hi guys, I present to you two cases that need your opinion.

Case 1
Introduction:

After missing out on the APL, I got a call today for an offer from a company I interviewed with in December.
The company is in Lekki, but I live in Ikorodu. The job comes with a lot of international exposure, although the exposure only takes place on the computer screen. It's a big firm but with only a few people (less than 25). The MD is a popular figure in Nigeria.

The Dilemma:

The pay is about 80k, and I'll spend an average of 40k on water transportation every month, and about 7k on feeding.
I have until Friday to accept or decline the offer.

Ps: I don't know anyone in Lekki

Case 2
Introduction

I interviewed with another company last Friday, just before the news of APL broke, the company is located in Ikeja (closer to Ikorodu) and I got the interview through a referral.

The Dilemma:

The take home will be around 110k/month with no international exposure but a defined career path, rapid career growth, and a more robust work environment (I'll be responsible for over 50 workers).
Ps: The offer isn't on ground yet.

Please I seriously need advice on what to do.

Can I reach out to you privately?

Alennaa:

Gender wahala..
It's not a crime to be male my dear..
I am even gifted with 2 boys...
No female yet...

.My advise still reaches out to all GTs(male &female) that were not successfully in this recruitment..
Nnpc is not the only route to having a successful career..

I was rejected by them in 2011/2012 recruitment..
I thought it's the end of the world.
I was frustrated..
I was dejected.
I was disappointed..

I dusted myself up.
God gifted me with a Federal job after the disappointment..
I got married..
I still went back to school(part time)
Have a M.Sc(Engineering)
Foreign Executive Masters in Project Mgt..
I am presently rounding up my P.hd..

I made myself still eligible to come back 7 years later to apply for supervisory position..

Where there is life..
There is hope..
Never give up on you dreams..

It read "no email" under the status (green bar) of "invited for oral interview".

I pray it only had something to do with the servers though, while I still keep my hopes for Monday.
After that, it's goodbye and Bleep life.

Chukeg:
Guy, are you sure you saw "no mail"
Or?

Okay, so I logged into the portal about 30 seconds ago, and I saw "no email".

It automatically refreshed and went back to invitation for oral interview.

Seems like end of the road.

Lol. This wasn't necessary bro, as it turned out to be a gift from a Turkish company I did a project for. I didn't know what the gift was, so I wanted to know if any other person had gotten a similar call at the time.

Ikorodu is different from Ikorodu. He may get houses for that price in places like Imota, Ewuelepe, Agbowa, and will have to travel hours daily when going to the Mainland or Island. At that rate, he will end up in debt as a result of spending all his income on transportation.
I'll advise he looks towards other low brow areas in Lagos.

kevwemanuel:
If you can raise between 70k to 100k, you can get a room self contain in some areas in Ikorodu, Lagos, and possibly some other low brow areas in Lagos. You should also plan for at least 2months feeding till you find your feet.

Thank you, bro Nap.

Napolitano2012:
Another thing I forgot to add is she said that given the amount of publicity the recruitment has faced of recent, the comprehensive list (FOR GT'S ONLY) would probably be published in a National daily FIRST, immediately before notifications are sent in order to display the veracity of its federal character. AND also that the recruitment is NOT hinging on any court case, that the NNPC committee set up to oversee the recruitment is bent on settling the matter out of court, series of meetings have been held with the lawyer in question and his lawyer...
..... That's All... She called an hour ago..

Thank you.

polyma:
Not applicable in every school. You can get admission then allocated a supervisor even in thesis-based course but the best and most potent way is to find a supervisor first who is ready for you and has fund/grant. It will make the probability of acceptance 9.9/10. While waiting for NNPC APL, I applied to Canada too and the admisson committee liked it but based it on me finding a supervisor. However, none was available for 2 consective terms and the application stylishly rejected.

NB: My advice get a supervisor first for a research based degree. KEEP HOPE ALIVE.

Apologies for derailing this thread a little.
