The Red Cross on Sunday appealed to Nigeria Government and to communities and individuals with influence to secure the release of two abducted health workers, as a deadline set by Boko Haram to kill them approached.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) spoke out a month after another hostage kidnapped with them was executed by the jihadists.

“A deadline that could result in the killing of another health care worker is less than 24 hours away,” said an ICRC statement.

“Speed and urgency are critical,” it added.

The three female health workers were kidnapped on March 1, in the remote town of Rann in Borno State following an attack by IS-affiliated Boko Haram faction.

The raid killed three other health workers and eight Nigerian soldiers.

Two of the kidnapped women, Hauwa Liman and Saifura Khorsa, worked for the Geneva-based humanitarian charity while the third, Alice Loksha, worked for the UN children’s organisation UNICEF.

There was no news of the trio until last month. Then the ICRC said it had received footage of Khorsa’s execution from the IS-supported Boko Haram faction — Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

In the footage, ISWAP threatened to kill the other two health workers if their demands were not met.

“The ICRC asks all those involved with this case to avoid a repeat of that devastating outcome,” said Mamadou Sow, ICRC’s head of operations in the Lake Chad region.

The ICRC called on ISWAP to show “mercy” and not to kill two health workers who were “doing nothing but helping the communities in northeast Nigeria”.

“Hauwa and Alice are medical workers who chose to work and help vulnerable communities in Rann, an area heavily affected by violence,” Sow said.

The jihadists have increasingly turned to kidnapping for ransom as a way to finance their operations and win back key commanders in prisoner swaps with the Nigerian government.

Rann is a remote town on the border with Cameroon where over 60,0000 people who have fled from Boko Haram jihadists depend on emergency food and medical aid to survive.

The ICRC also called for the release of 15-year old Leah Sharibu who was among over 100 schoolgirls abducted by the Islamist group from a boarding school in Dapchi in February.

While her colleagues were released weeks after the abduction, Sharibu the only Christian among them, was held back for refusing to convert Islam.

“Leah Sharibu…is also being held by the same armed group and everything must be done to ensure she too is released promptly and unharmed,” said Patricia Danzi, ICRC’s Africa director of operations.

“We urge you: spare and release these women…like all those abducted, they are not part of any fight,” said Danzi.

President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to secure the release of the hostages.

A government delegation visited Sharibu’s parents on Friday and assured them of efforts to free their daughter.

A human-rights group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), have reacted to the Federal Government’s travel ban on 50 high-profile Nigerians describing it as illegal.

The group in a statement signed on Sunday by the Deputy Director, Timothy Adewale, said the order banning the alleged high-profile corrupt Nigerians from travelling abroad is arbitrary, repressive and illegal.

“It breaches constitutional rights and the country’s international obligations, which protect the rights to freedom of movement, to leave one’s country, to privacy, and to due process of law.

“A travel ban by its nature is an interference with the right to leave one’s country. It is neither necessary nor proportionate to prevent dissipation of stolen assets or stop politically exposed persons (PEPs) from tampering with any such assets. The ban should be immediately lifted and the order rescinded,” the statement read in part.

SERAP added that the travel ban rather than performing its declared objective of preventing dissipation of stolen assets would undermine the government’s expressed commitment to combat corruption and violate the country’s international human rights obligations.

“The travel ban will play right into the hands of high-profile corrupt officials by feeding into the narrative that the fight against corruption is targeted only at political opponents.

“The travel ban and mass surveillance will distract the authorities from taking legitimate action to recover stolen assets, effectively punish high-ranking corrupt officials and portray the government as unwilling to embrace the rule of law in its fight against corruption, thereby making it difficult to obtain the necessary support and cooperation of countries keeping stolen assets.”

SERAP in the statement noted further that the travel ban will also strain the government’s relationships with partner countries, on whom it will inevitably rely for vital asset recovery cooperation, undermining the effort to bring them closer.

“The travel ban cannot achieve the objective of depriving the 50 Nigerians suspected of corruption of their ill-gotten gains.

“It is absolutely important that the government is guided by the provisions of Article 31 of the UN Convention against Corruption to which Nigeria is a state party, and which authorises states parties to take preliminary measures to seize, freeze or otherwise immobilise property for the purposes of confiscation/pending investigation and litigation,” the human rights group said.

The Federal Government had on Saturday banned 50 high-profile Nigerians from travelling abroad following the implementation of the Executive Order 6 signed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the Federal Government said the 50 prominent personalities (whose names were not stated) had been placed on a watch-list and are, therefore, restricted from leaving the country pending the determination of their cases.

President Buhari on July 5, 2018, signed the Executive Order (6) which will prevent any government official from engaging in corrupt practices.

Devotees of Sàngó were invited to perform traditional rites in a community in Oyo state which was affected by a lightning recently. It was gathered that the lightning also destroyed some houses and killed a victim in the process.

The Sàngó worshippers performed the traditional rites and found a local item (Edùn Àrá) that was formed by the lightning and dug it up.

It is believed that the devotees of Sàngó have the responsibility to make certain traditional rites in the place affected in order to prevent again the same accident in that locality.

Besides having to perform the rituals for possible victims, they also have the responsibility to find at the scene of the accident the Edùn Àrá ,
known as Sàngó stone.

The world’s leading climate scientists have warned in a new report that there is only 12 years for global warming to be kept to a maximum of 1.5C, beyond which even half a degree will significantly worsen the risks of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people.

If the world doesn’t act dramatically to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere, there will be catastrophic damages a dozen years from now.

The authors of the landmark report by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released on Monday say urgent and unprecedented changes are needed to reach the target, which they say is affordable and feasible although it lies at the most ambitious end of the Paris agreement pledge to keep temperatures between 1.5C and 2C.

The United Nations panel on climate change says the impact of climate change can still be slowed down if countries around the world take unprecedented action to reduce their use of fossil fuels and release less carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the air.

A young Nigerian lady who was said to have traveled to Saudi Arabia to work as a house help, has revealed how she escaped from her employer’s home .

The lady whose family taught travelled to work in Europe, had to escape to Oman after learning of the sudden death of two Nigerian maids in Saudi Arabia.

Read previous story here. In a recent interview with Satellite Times, she revealed that her new boss allegedly killed the last maid (pictured above), who worked for her, weeks before she arrived.

On discovering what led to the death of the former maid, she then decided to escape but couldn’t because of the contract she had signed with a recruitment agency in Nigeria and Oman.

According to the contract, she was restricted from leaving the house and was to stay indoors all through. When all plans to escape failed, she then decided to fake madness.

She began by uttering unknown words, including Yoruba incantation, while covering her face with white powder and displaying to the amazement of everyone in the house, even guests. Just after the ‘fake’ display, her new employer was forced to call the recruitment agency after two days and queried them for giving her a mad lady as a maid. She further said, she continued the display of ‘madness’ for 3 days and wasn’t given water or food.

The new employer who couldn’t take the ‘mad’ display anymore bought a plane ticket for her ordered her driver (as seen in the picture) to take her to the airport to ensure she is deported from the country.

A young Muslim woman has been tied to a tree for five hours and whipped after she ran off with her Hindu boyfriend to get married. The village council ordered the 19-year-old to be punished for bringing dishonour to the village after her family managed to track her down.

The Muslim woman had been dating her Hindu lover for more than 18 months and told reporters that she was “ready for any punishment”.

She said: “I love the boy and will marry him come what may. “I don’t believe in castes or religions. “I am 19-year-old and can well decide whom I should marry, whom I should not,” she asserted.

The woman, who has not been named but is the daughter of Mohammad Farid Ansari, ran away from the village of Jogiya Maran in north east India, with boyfriend Rupesh Kumar.

Her family, who had forbidden the relationship, managed to find her after contacting her lover, according to reports.

The village council reportedly ordered the girl be punished for bringing dishonour to the village, and she was tied to the tree and whipped.

Villagers, including elderly woman and children, were seen standing around the woman and in another clip, she was seen on the ground, still tied to the tree.

Her father told reporters that he had asked his daughter to introduce him to her partner but she had refused.

The police made no arrests in relation to those who tied her up, as no complaint was filed.

Mr Kumar is on the run.
