But the other ones are clear.

Ok. It's the same with the others. The figures added together begins with the first figure provided in the question. While the number of figures to add is indicated by the second figure provided in each question. Part of the trick however, is to reduce each figure by 1 to get the next, hence reading the figures in descending order.

So for the first question, we are to begin at 9 and add only 2 figures.
The next lower figure from 9 is 8.
So 9 and 8 are the two figures to add. 9+8 will give 17.
