Itsekiri conquered a part of Lagos, Bini owner of Lagos, Igbo has 90 % of Lagos, Hausa has 50% of Lagos, Ebira has 25%, What about, Dahomey, Ghana, Togo, Sierra Leone 25% each. Some people go choke on this Lagos O! |
Most children carry this burden of living "alone" with their fathers while their half siblings are more privileged. But you may not hear them say it until they become independent adults. |
Divorce: Best Mom Even In A Slum May Not Be The Best Wife Fathers need to be sensitive to the kids of their ex-wives. It could be miserable homes for them. Whenever some of the sweet-mom children run back downtown to mom, they are taken back. Some of the stories these children tell their mothers may be exaggerated, it includes beating by their step mother, neglect while half-brothers or sister are cuddled or spoilt with more toys and clothing. What is clear is that even when their mothers could only provide less or same toys and cloth, the fact that half-siblings got more from dad got them sad. Their stories can be touching. Sweet mom is the best, no matter where she lives, even in the slum. No one can underestimate the umbilical cord between mother and children. The man that competes with a woman for the love of most children inside or outside the same house is wasting his time. GRA, Government Reservation Areas, strictly residential, used to be for colonial officers. They were dry, quiet and the few African officers’ kids there, could hardly find anything to buy unless they go downtown. Unfortunately, children’s priority have changed. These days, most children want to live in areas where the middle class or the rich live. Their home address matters so much that some girls would not date anyone outside these “exalted” addresses. Other boys or girls even put on their best attire with just enough money for transport and a drink where they could hook up with guys that live in highbrow part of the city. If they do not “catch” any, they go home hungry. Suburb and slum are relative depending on the country you live in and when. In the 50s, 60s and 70s most of us in African countries live in towns and cities that are more or less the same except for those living in the GRA that is designated as for senior government officers, mostly white colonial officers. Cities and towns where most of the fun were for children; were better. The planners of GRA in those days were daft. There were hardly playgrounds for soccer and no mom and pop stores where you could even get candies. There was Adelabu, the very popular politician from Ibadan. Whenever he was in Ikoyi, Lagos; he would bring his drummer with him. Since most of the GRA residents were full of those white government officers, Adelabu would tell them to go back to their countries if they did not like the loud sound of talking drums. It is different in the developed countries where ghettos are desolate, some areas are prone to crimes and underserved schools. In Canada though, there is hardly any place that fits definition of a ghetto as in the United States and all the schools in Canada regardless of where you live are well provided for with more amenities than one would find in the USA ghettos. Back to Africa where divorce was rare in those days but still happened, children were either with their mothers or their fathers. Poverty is so rampant these days; a kid would be crazy to choose to live with a parent in the ghetto or slum when he could have a better life with the parent in the suburb or GRA of those days. But then, most women would not leave their kids with estranged husband and another wife or woman, only to turn their kids into house help. The point here are those children that chose to live with their mother, no matter what. The bond between mother and child can never be undervalued. This writer can still remember his first time in the boarding school in another city. One day he got so sick, he had to be sent home. As soon as he saw his mother, he got well, only to be sent back to school immediately! So those places that look like ghetto or slum to some folks were paradise. In any case, children loved the towns as much as their mothers and fathers. But there is also the umbilical cord tying mother and child together. No matter where the area is, rich or poor, children of those days would rather stay with their mother. The same may not be true today since courts always give custody of the children to the parent that is better able to provide them a “rich” environment. This may be so in such cities as Nairobi, Accra or Lagos. What is surprising and even confound planners is why some successful blacks refused to leave and few return to ghetto. Indeed, some of them refused to leave the project despite the fact that they have to pay more or about the same as private apartment in a better area. So, it has little to do with money because they have good jobs with nice salary to escape the ghetto. But it is the only place they feel comfortable. Another way one can understand this in African cities, is when people are asked to move to new development outside their own so that their homes could be demolished for new modern projects. In Lagos Nigeria, people refused to move to Surulere with good facilities like flower garden in front and vegetable garden at the back, indoor bathroom with septic tank compared to ancient “shalanga” where “outsiders” were employed to rid waste once or twice weekly. If we are so attached to our environment, it could provide social planners and social workers the reasons children go back to their mothers in a less desirable housing after common sense or court order agreed that children are well provided for in a rich environment. By this we usually mean housing, good schools and other social amenities. As much as some of the mothers love their children, they know they may not be able to provide as much as their ex-husbands can. Even Surulere, the New Lagos of those days, it is now seen as a ghetto by the children of those that used to live there. The only real problem with Surulere in those days were mosquitoes and too far from action. The schools and playgrounds were nearby. A cousin decided to show her children where she used to live and they shouted: mummy you used to live in the ghetto! The areas in old African cities like Monrovia and Freetown may look like ghettos now, they were the place we were very happy. We had soccer fields close by and where there was none, we created ours on the streets. When cars came, we made way for them and as soon as they drove away, we resumed our game. Today, with so many people, you cannot even see Lagos roads, full of people. Cars make their way through like a divided sea that closes as cars move away. We played marble and station, seeds from “agbalumo” on the sidewalk. We knew where to buy tuwo, rice and beans, akara, mosa, ewa-Ghana and even kenki. There is this attachment not only to our mothers and fathers but also to our neighborhood. If parents separated, those with custody of children of their ex- must watch out for kids’ depression. May not complain to dads. Usually, men would marry any lady they like even from broke ass home. So they like to marry up. But there are girls from good homes looking for a presentable guy they can introduce to their parents. So the prenuptial goes both ways. spinna: |
Better Be A Single Broke Ass Than A Shafted Divorcee Broke Ass Have Rights Too! You worked day and night all your life just to be able to have happy homes, wife and children, only to end up with a failed marriage. Your wealthy status changed if you can hardly support yourself, your new girlfriend, wife or new a family. A court can make it so difficult that by the time you pay for the taste of your ex-wife as if she was still married to you, child support and upkeep of the house you were kicked out of, you are left hanging dry. If you think this can only happen by court order outside of Africa, you better think again. Shafted Divorcees also have right too! Actually, there are 3 sides to a story: his side, her side and the truth: determined as facts by a court. When we were growing up, a couple returned from London and later got a divorce. When they were studying in London, the husband became a lawyer but he was partially supported by the wife’s money sent by her parents. Whenever they had differences in England, there was an elder lawyer there, from their City that settled it. Some of her friends had squealed to her parents that instead of studying in school, she got married to her boyfriend and both were raising children as a family. In those days, nobody sent you to school to go and get married. Africans did not meet one another on the street, families marry. You were supposed to come back home as soon as your study is completed unless you want to kill your mother. Most friends and family would start counting the years, as you leave. If you do not return after four years, people would go to your family and ask why you were not back home. Oh, he has decided to stay back for masters, the parents would say. If it went beyond that, it was either you have become the Mayor of London or got lost abroad. Anyone that saw you in England would be wondering if you want to kill your mother at home. If they found out you were not serious, they would tell your mother to send you a ticket; back home! Their mediator came back home first and later became a prominent judge. He had retreated from their family affairs as a couple since both had African parents to settle their differences. The wife’s parents were not happy that their daughter did not qualify since she spent her school fees on the husband. As a very successful lawyer in England and later in Lagos, the husband had another girlfriend that led to their separation. In short, they filed for divorce. Guess who got their case as an Appellate Justice? The elder who settled their differences when one was a student and the other a dropout in England. Both were happy the elder that got their case was a member of the appeal panel; since he was fair in those days in England. The case went on for a while before it got to the Appeal panel of which the elder was a member. It could have been better for the husband if they had settled out of court or never appealed the lower courts judgment. Most of the witnesses at the lower courts that were students with them in London supported the wife and recounted all the sacrifices she made for the husband to become a very successful lawyer. Usually, by the time cases get to Appeals Court, point of law raised matters more than the facts and credibility determined by the lower courts. Nevertheless, the Appeal Court judgment was devastating to the husband. He lost so much to the ex-wife and children, he could barely support himself and his new fiancée. If he had to do it all over, he might as well have remained a broke ass than a wealthy married man that went back to being broke again. If this case had been decided in Britain or United States, we could have argued that it would never happen in Africa. Ladies now make fun of a broke ass divorcee. Indeed, this happened in Africa, not lately but some decades ago. You must have heard stories of what happened to African men that married in Europe and America and how they lost cars and houses to their wives. Some of these, as girlfriends actually told their friends what they were going to do as soon as they gain a solid foothold abroad. There are stories circulating how some of these ladies later sent for their mother, father or siblings only to kick out the husbands. One father even told a husband on his way to work to take a second look at his house because that would be the last time he would see the inside. Only a bias fellow would take all of these stories truthfully since there are three sides to a story. We hardly hear about nurses that were dumped by their husbands for different tastes or returned to old lovers. But there are enough documented cases of African wives using police and oyinbo’s law to displace their husbands. Unfortunately, the pressure from work is taken out on their families when both get home. The last thing Africans want at home is stress; in a hostile environment. They need understanding and strong men or women by their side. These are the type of ladies that came out of Africa in those days. They were not that many around, but the few then, were very dedicated to their men. There were some trusted older men around acting as elders, settling differences. What is clear is that black or African men are only respected in Africa just as white men enjoy privilege in Europe and America, Asian men enjoy privilege in Asia. African, black or mixed race enduring discrimination outside of Africa, are so frustrated, a few have taken a law, they do not believe favor them, into their hands. Husbands have caught wives with boyfriends red handed only for the boyfriends to call police on the husbands: for abusing his wife and assaulting him. There are many reasons some guys do not want relationships with ladies abroad where they live. They expect a submissive African lady just like Americans going to Europe or Asia; wish for the same. When told by relatives that the girl he came to marry worwor, leftover for naive men abroad, he would ignore them once the girl claimed mischief or that the people were jealous. These days, the question is: out of all the pretty African students and other ladies with you guys abroad, you could not find one to marry? Oh well, he could be looking for a nurse. They make good money and all the investment in a nurse would pay off. We heard about guys coming back home surveilling nursing schools for the most beautiful girls. Some guys look for girls with good sciences grades in high schools, they can send to nursing school in the United States or Europe. If many of these guys have to do it all over again, they would remain a broke ass some ladies call them than lose all investment to become a shafted divorcee. But some girls countered that African broke ass men cannot afford them, not to talk of sexy dolls. What they forget is that African men improvise. Before those sex dolls, were inflatable big sized dolls! Lose investments to become broker than ever? Believe it or not, there are ladies still looking for just decent men. What a lovely and sincere man. Please keep her in Nigeria. Otherwise na police she go take remove you from your house abroad. |
Can everyone see what I see. A Not Nigerian man! Anyone but a Nigerian. |
Normally, this is good new and wish it can happen with all Nigerians. Unfortunately, it only happens among group of people from the West. It started in Lagos electing Zik to represent them in Ibadan. Recently, Bode George defied Yoruba in Lagos allowing Igbo to present Igbo candidate in an area still owned by Ojora Family. In each of these cases, it has never been reciprocated in the East or North. It has led to more demands in Yoruba land, not in the East. If anything, Igbo are still bitter that Zik did not become Premier in the West, that they were blocked at Ore and that they could not get council post in Lagos. When they did, they flaunt it in Yoruba face. Igbo has never supported Yoruba interest in the history of Nigeria. Even when Yoruba voted against Obasanjo, they voted with the North choice as usual. Many schools in the West appointed non Yoruba prefects including Igbo. When has that become a big deal in Ilesha? |
The difference here is that both America and Yoruba accept and celebrate the contributions of immigrants in their culture not usurp and stand on their shoulders beating their chests as the source of an ocean. samuk: |
Any lady above 30 is old enough to marry younger or elder men. So state age limit. I see many elder men arguing with market women on price. Many of them are still viable with class. There are matured younger men like France head of state that appreciate older ladies. |
It will take a skillful surgeon with a special scalpel to separate reliance of Bini on Yoruba .His mother, Idia, immediately located a Yoruba Babalawo (mystic) at Ugbo/Ilaje, in the riverine area, and brought him to Benin to work on the king´s spiritual ailment. He later cured the Oba of the shameful ailment and the Queen after rewarding him generously, prevailed on him, (the Yoruba mystical healer), to settle permanently in Benin, in order to continue rendering his services to Oba Esigie should the need arise. The Yoruba traditional consultant agreed to stay in Benin and set up home at Ogbelaka quarters, where his descendants have thrived until this day.
|
Those claiming the story is fake can not realize the lesson and humanity this guy has brought. Even if it is fake, so what? We learn from fiction and good movies too. Please learn to enjoy the story and stop dissing. |
A study was conducted asking women if their men satisfied them in bed and if they can do with more sex. Most of them claim they could do with more sex from their men. When asked if they were happy in their marriage, most answered yes. Asked if they would prefer another man that would satisfy them more sexually, most of them answered, no! So for many women, there is more to a man than sex. Cheating like shoplifting for those with money to pay, is a cheap thrill. |

Well, the same goes for all expensive weddings. It is really unwise. Tradition must be modified to pressing modern needs. Nobody can collect all the investments they make on any child and certainly not on daughters. Igbo parents raise dowry not only on non-Igbo but on Diaspora Igbo. Many Yoruba and non-Yoruba spend so much on weddings, they have little food left the following morning. It has led to killing of their daughters when the husbands regret their investment on those that turn their daughters into slaves and cash cow in the market. This lady's warning should be taken seriously by all. As for those crying that their women should be left alone, it's too late. The train has left the station. Women have come a long way baby. |
BUSINESSES & INTER-ETHNIC MARRIAGES MAY SUPPRESS AFRICAN SELF-HATRED Businesses have always contributed a haven where you find people of different ethnic groups in pursuit of economic salvation. Any business that wants to expand its market share must expand to gain more people to patronize its goods and services. They need retailers to market services and goods. Africans have now come to realize that they have to patronize one another through the Continent. South and East African businesses now operate in West Africa and vice versa. Local businessmen smart enough go outside to borrow in order to create manufacturing jobs at home so youths that want to stay could have incomes. Fear of lending spreads when borrowers become creditors by court fiat! We do not bankrupt one bank if we want others to lend to us. Even in the western world, if you refused to pay back and sue the banks as a USA businessman is famous for, you have to go out of the country to get odious loans for your projects. When fear, riots and economic boycott that were irrationally carried out destroyed USA vibrant area, communities were blighted. Banks and businesses fled, killing jobs in their neighborhoods. Businesses are finally overcoming the fear of losing their investment in riot ravaged areas but if businesses of those that ventured out are not safe, we are discouraging others from investing in those areas. This is why local businessmen leave their towns to invest and live in safe areas. African market is just growing. Even Africans in Diaspora are going back to African taste or food. Economic boycott will eventually work when we acquire other’s taste to the point of saturation. Right now, it is much easier for majority with attractive economic indicators to be self-sufficient and lure others to its taste, culture, land, jobs or entertainment than for minority to do so. This must be qualified as in some Asian countries; rich minority are the richest ethnic providing jobs. Peaceful co-existence is failing even when they depend on one another for economic survival. Indeed, inter-ethnic marriage is so ingrain in some communities, we were hoping it would solve most of our problems. As our ladies are becoming more informed and independent; like men they have been able to unite us by marring men of their choice against cultural norms. Once amicable relationships between Ijaw/Itsekiri/Urhobo, Yoruba/Bini, Hausa/Kanuri are tenuous. The saddest part is the effrontery and impunity when the hotheads challenge tolerance for one another. From neighbors like Ife/Modakeke, Aguleri/Umeleri or Hausa/Maguzawa to that of those with distance between their settlements like Hausa/Beroni, Igbo/Anioma, Yoruba/Bini, Yoruba/Igbo. We divide ourselves into recurring clans. People have lost respect for one another as many assumed they have the right to flaunt business/cultural norms that their hosts deserve. Fortunately, we are changing and we are going for made-In-Africa. Why boycott our local rice for Uncle Ben’s? Business boycott worked well in western countries where they have saturated the thirst of consumers as they look for new ways to market different brand to others. In the western world, companies have spread into minority regions and sometimes killed local brands. Even Chinese food has gone big and franchised; taking over mom and pop restaurants just as some soul food restaurants faded. A case in point are plantain chips. Mom and dad marketing “igbekere” in small chips at Rhode Island, USA. It went wild amongst Africans that were used to it at home. Before long, Spanish big business that were selling unripe plantain chips took it over and expanded the market even more. Today, plantain chips are worldwide delicacies at parties. Threatening economic boycott against those that have little to lose but that we have more to gain from is nothing short of economic suicide. Yet, everyone has a contribution to make. Every region or ethnic group is on edge and at high alert against those trying to usurp their land. It may work against those some aggressors can subdue. But never against those that can subdue the aggressors on their land. How hard that is to understand is beyond a reasonable person. There is no doubt that there is a great deal of money to be made in Nigeria, not only because of its big population but Nigeria has more in the number of educated consumers and exotic tastes for local and foreign goods like most African countries. The real problem has been that Africans have never gone after their consumers in full force. We have more trading partners outside the Continent than we do trade within the Continent. So by boycotting; we patronize foreigners! Despite all the corruption in Nigeria where money is looted by politicians regardless of ethnicity in the same club, the major businesses are still coveted in one region. Most ambitious and even destitute know the favorable region to go to in order to prosper. While others stay put in their regions and prosper, those at the bottom have to get out in order to get the Golden Fleece. It is no different from those killing themselves to cross the desert before reaching greener pasture. Western Nigeria have ethnic kinships in large number in and out of Africa. They still dominate the real economy in Africa. Retailers, mom and pop stores cannot compete with big plants that were established as industrial estates well before those in other regions were established. It made Ogun and Lagos states two of the top biggest economies in Africa, if they were countries. As long as greener pasture remains in Lagos State, it is suicidal to boycott. Lagos and Nigerian Govt. must establish rehabilitation centers to absorb high rate of migrations in. Otherwise, it will burst into new forced exit. The tension within Lagos is more than just cultural difference, it is between desperate adventurers trying to make it and hosts of the land afraid of losing it all. Perform a little experiment: put two or three male and female mice in a pen. If space and food remain constant as the number of mice increase, nobody needs to tell you when they will start attacking one another. All the new novel theories about who own Lagos is hogwash. The Idejo Chiefs and their descendants are the undisputable land owners that gave or sold land to others. Some places like Jos, Rivers, Enugu and Cameroon borders restrict land ownership by gender, class or community pressure. This will spread to the West where there are proposals to lease land to outsiders for only ten or twenty years and no more. Making the North most attractive. Some new comers are cultivating stories so that they can justify land ownership outside their states. Learning from American Indians’ plight, owners’ resistance may be insurmountable. It's like the old saying worldwide. Go West Young Man Go West. It's the search for opportunities. But they also say - Thank You, it can only happen in the WEST! Lagos needs to do it the civilized way like most places. Create a Rehabilitation Center and sort out the undesirables for skill training with cooperation from state of origin and Federal Government. Otherwise, mass reallocation back to state of origin may raise its ugly head again. Nobody wants that. It is an act of desperation. |

I see a silver lining. I see some of you are narrating how Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba are related. This may foster accommodation, tolerance and respect for your hosts. This is how Igbo in those days were elected solely by Yoruba. I am not sure if it is too late or not. There may be reconciliation if we all learn to be humble to our hosts. olukumni now see themselves as igboOh well, time to tell another short story:Ikechuob: Some years ago, we had to follow one of my childhood friends to the East to pay dowry on his MOTHER, not the wife. How come? While we were growing up, we never even realized that the mother was Igbo. Cut long story short. When his father married the mother, she was apparently disowned (not sure, just later rumor). As the son became a successful man, the mother told him he had to go back to her home and ask for her from her relatives because the husband died already. So we all went to this part of the East. Boy, make una see fines and penalties like Paris Club loan O! My friend was up to it and he paid everything including all the years past. This was how we grow up in those days. Noise makers, please for peace sake, go home and ask about Yoruba/Igbo relationship. Anywhere you find Yoruba outside their home, they are so humble and respectful of their hosts. Indeed, please complete the story about Olukunmi in Onitsha. They swore to the reporters that they are Igbo, not Yoruba. This was even when they spoke some Yoruba. In fairness sha, there are some Igbo like that in the West. The reason you do not hear about them is because they have assimilated and they cannot stand these noise makers. As for Igbo women, dat one dey pain una, no be small. Na who no sabi good thin. According to one Igbo proverb: if dem put sugar for una mouth or na baby mouth self, baby nor dey spit am out O. Yoruba men sweet, no be small. Anyway, behave like Yoruba outside their home, you would be surprised at the change of attitude, if it is not too late. It is up to the youths. |
