SportsRe: The Truth About The Early 1900s Nigeria Vs India Match (1 - 99)!!! (photo) by nokingasgod: 10:49pm On Jan 15, 2015
Ruffychuks:
Many have heard about this match. Some
think it’s an urban legend. Some think it’s
only a joke. But only few know the truth.
A long time ago, few months after the end
of the Nigeria-Biafra war, the Military
Governor of Lagos decided to stage an
exhibition match at the then glorious
National Stadium Lagos. He thought it
would be a special way of celebrating
Nigeria’s victory in the war, a way of
helping Lagosians to forget the sad bloody
years that had just passed. He wanted to
stage the match between Nigeria & Ghana
but was advised against it. His advisers
reminded him how Ghana trashed Nigeria
3-Nil at the 1960 Independence Match,
that another loss to Ghana might defeat
the purpose of the exhibition match. His
advisers suggested that they choose a
team that would be very easy to beat.
Brig Gen Mobolaji Johnson agreed.
Ethiopia was considered. Zimbabwe was
considered. India was considered. USA was
considered. And India was chosen. He &
his advisers believed that India would be a
walkover. But had he known what would
happen he might have chosen Brazil. Yes,
Brazil were the reigning world champions
at the time but… Oh, had he known.
India agreed to play the exhibition match
with Nigeria. In fact, they were overjoyed.
Nigeria was one of the best teams in
Africa. And they had never played with an
African team before. What more! They were
most overjoyed that Nigeria had agreed to
their three special conditions. What were
these conditions?
Well, on that fateful day, a bright Saturday
afternoon on August 15th, 1970, the
National Stadium Lagos was filled with
excited spectators. That was Condition No.
1, that the match be played on India’s
Independence Day. As the players of
Nigeria & India came into the pitch,
spectators screamed with more excitement
as they saw that all the twenty-two
players were barefooted. That was
Condition No. 2. (Remember that India
had withdrawn from the 1950 World Cup
because they weren’t allowed to play
barefooted.)
Priiii… Referee Mohamed Touati blew his
whistle to begin the game. (The Tunisian
referee had been suspended by FIFA earlier
that year but had accepted to officiate this
special match.) Indian forward Amer Al-
Amer made the first pass. And before
anyone could say “Bosnia-Herzegovina”,
one Majed Suleman fired the ball high into
the air towards the Nigerian post. The
gaint of a Nigerian keeper, Emmanuel
Okala, dived to the right while the ball
dropped into the left side of the net.
Gooooaaal!!! 3-0. That was Condition No.
3, that each goal scored by India would be
counted as 3points while each by Nigeria
would be 1 as usual. (Nigeria agreed
because they believed that India could
never score. Or at least couldn’t score
more than one goal.) Emmanuel was
looking confused. He was very sure he had
dived towards the ball. Every other person
thought he’d deliberately let the Indians
score just to spice up the game.
Meanwhile, India’s fan club was going wild
with jubilation.
Priii… The Nigerian forwards Sunday
Atuma & Thompson Usiyen passed. As
Thompson passed to Paul Hamilton, he
was surprised when he saw India’s Faisal
Al-Dakheel with the ball. Faisal quickly
shot the ball into the air towards Nigeria’s
post. Goooal! 6-0. Thompson was so
confused. He could have sworn it was Paul
his teammate he had passed to.
Priii… Sunday Atuma passed into the
Nigerian half. Alloysius Atuegbu passed to
Haruna Ilerika. Haruna made a long pass
into the Indian half to Samuel Okoye. He
was shocked when he saw the ball in the
legs of Abdullah Al-Shemmari. Haruna
wiped his eyes in disbelief. Too late!
Abdullah shot the ball into the air. Goal!
9-0. Three goals in barely six minutes?
Nigerian spectators were wondering what
was happening.
Priii… Goal! 12-0. Yusuf Al-Suwayed.
15-0. Amer Al-Amer. 18-0. Majed
Suleman’s second goal. 21-0. Abdulaziz
Al-Buloushi. 24-0. Majed’s hat-trick.
27-0. Faisal Al-Dakheel’s second goal.
30-0. Waleed Al-Mubarak. At the twentieth
minute, Nigeria’s Paul Hamilton ran with
the ball all the way to India’s box-18. But
as he raised his leg to shoot, he slipped &
fell. India’s defender Mahboub Jumaa
easily took the ball as Paul lay on the
ground moaning like a baby. That was the
nearest Nigeria had gotten to the Indian
post so far.
Twenty-five minutes later & eight goals
more, the score stood at 54-0. Some
spectators angrily left the stadium even
before the half-time whistle. Others waited
patiently, hoping that Nigeria would
revenge in the 2nd half.
“Boys, what the hell is happening out
there?!” Coach Jorge Penna was furious.
“You’re the damn captain, answer me!!” he
was shouting at Emmanuel Okala.
Emmanuel was speechless. He didn’t know
what to say.
“Co-co-coach…” Godwin Achebe began “I
think I know what’s happening sir”
The coach was glaring at him now.
“Those Indians dey use juju. They’re using
ma-magic.”
“Yes! Yes!” his teammates echoed &
nodded & murmured amongst themselves.
“Shut up you fools!! Magic my foot!!! There
is no magic in football!”

To all the Messr. Knowsitalls like noteasy, Omotakins, rotimy etc, your provocations and vituperations are ill-informed and quite unnecessary. This thread is about a particular subject which is not consistent with your religious beliefs, the sanest and Godly thing to do is simply boycott it. Attempts to prove the superiority of your belief while discrediting the other is surely not the way of Christ and in the 21st century, it is barbaric. Attitudes such as these are part of the remote causes of religious violence especially in Nigeria. And for your information, spiritual arrogance can only be borne out of satanic influences.

Religion is personal and there are no Christians, muslims, traditionalists etc in the presence of God. Before God, you are an individual, a human being and your volition will come to count and not the number of times you defend the superiority of your Christian, Islamic etc beliefs

“I hope Nigeria will wake up and arrest him this time round. He is putting that country on the spot for wrong reasons. Let him prophesy all the killings happening in Nigeria. Many people have died in Nigeria than Indonesia. You have a prophet; why are you perishing then in Nigeria?”

Whatever you are insinuating, God help you. THe man was clear in his statement, Sharia is for the Muslims and will not apply to non-Muslims. He said non-Muslims should have nothing to fear about. Since Sharia was introduced in Zamfara State heavens have not fall. Nigeria is a federation, meaning, the component units ideally should have their different constitutions. In the US for instance, in the constitution of some states, same sex marriages are allowed while in some, it was abhorred etc.

Enough of religious sentiments, only oblivious minds still cling to that in the 21 century!

I hope you will retain this sentiment when an Igbo man produces evidence that he was born in lagos and spent his whole life here and wants to contest for the position of governor.
No Sir, its not sentiment but objectivity, legality and constitutionality. The constitution says if you stay in a place for a number of years (I think 10 years), you are indigenous to that place. That is the way it is all over the world and that is why you guys will do all sorts to have your wife deliver abroad so that the child could automatically become a citizen of such a place. That is also why many struggle to be qualified for American green card.

Now, the problem with the Igbo of Lagos is that they are so consumed with the hatred of their host that they often forget that they are no longer visitors in the land. Many of them were born in Lagos and have grown business empires in Lagos but still erroneously think, behave and dream of coming from a state in the East.....

Verily I say unto you, if the project Nigeria were to succeed then, it would have to overcome ills such as this. There can be no short cut.

They got their surname ''Musa Yar'Radua'' from their father's name.

Heart felt prayers to the decease, may the good Lord forgive him his sins, may he encounter God and may he come to His recognition.

Be that as it may, cant feel no sympathy for Jim Nwobodo. He was governor of old Anambra state and he lacked the vision to know that health care is one of the greatest needs of every day Nigerians and so, invest in quality health care for all irrespective of class. He joined hands with his ilks across the nation to plunder the nation's resources and we are where we are today because of the actions and inactions of people like Nwobodo. He could afford to take his sons abroad for medical treatment but majority of us, on everyday basis, have to watch our loved ones, afflicted with same/similar ailments, die because of the collapse in the health sector.

I hope this would be a lesson to the current army of plunderers plaguing our nation, what goes around comes around. Law of retributory justice will always catch up with us all. Keep stealing our resources, amassing stupendous wealth at our expense, there is always a payback time.

Lest I forget, Jim Nwobodo will always be remembered the more not as a governor of Old Anambra State where he perpetrated all sorts of atrocities like according undue favor to his mistress, nor as a former Senator of the federal republic. Jim Nwobodo in my mind will be remembered the more as a man who as minister of Sports, in a rare show of impunity, took the generating set of the National Stadium in Lagos to his country home in far away Anambra

Oh please,Awolowo was parading himself as the leader of the Yoruba people and probably rightfully was. The only thing standing in his way of pulling the west out of Nigeria where a few thousand illiterate soldiers in Ikeja Barrak led by Gowon and Murutala who were more or less surrounded by the majority Yorubas. I will never know why a man like Awolowo who knew how northern soldiers and civilians alike were murdering easterners in such gruesome ways as decapitations and disembowelment could turn around and think "people capable of such depravity are just exactly the right people for the Yorubas to be in the same nation" Was this man thinking straight at the time? He could have gone underground and made a declaration urging the Yoruba people to seize Lagos ,arrest Gowon and Murutala and declare the Oduduwa nation. Instead,he did what all the other leaders of the time except Ojukwu did. He accepted Northern domination. As for my saying that the typical Yoruba man cannot be trusted,we Igbos and Yorubas share the same sentiments about each other,it's nothing new.
I'm sorry I couldn't find a frame of reference, i'd rather not join issues with you!

I think you've got this wrong on many levels . I have read a lot about the war, watched first hand interviews of the major participants and my father was a captain in the Biafran army and has told a lot about it. I still have letters my father wrote to my mother from the war front so I can authoritatively tell you I know a thing or two about the times. Ojukwu was a man of peace. Ojukwu actually wanted Nigeria to remain one but he was not about to sacrifice his people to Northern domination in other to keep Nigeria one. The Aburi agreement which Gowon and Ojukwu signed was meant to run Nigeria as a confederation where nobody could dominate another but the greedy northerners and their lust to control the economic and political life of Nigeria led to war. Ojukwu did not fire the first shot either. As for the people of the south-South such as Ken Saro-Wiwa who fought against Biafra, what happened later? All the oil wells in the south-South are now owned by northerners. The south-South people have been bled dry because they wanted Nigeria and Ojukwu has long been vindicated. The people of the South-south jumped from the frying pan of Biafra straight into the hellfire of Nigeria because of people like Saro-Wiwa. As for Awolowo, this man came to Enugu and told a large crowd of Igbos that should the eastern people pull out of Nigeria,Yorubas would follow suit. Just like a typical Yoruba man who cannot be trusted,he chickend out and took a plum job in Gowons cabinet from where he orchestrated the economic strangulation of the easterners. Maybe Ojukwu was stubborn and high handed but I have no doubt he meant well. War situations are not normal. Saro-Wiwa paid the price for not being wise enough to see that the war to keep Nigeria one was actually a war to take over the oil of Niger-Delta people by the northerners. He was more concerned about Igbo domination not realising that he was making the situation worse by adding northerners and their Yoruba cohorts to the list. Today, the Niger-Delta people are in an even bigger prison than they were in the eastern region, even with a south-South president. Saro-Wiwa paid with his life for not knowing who his real enemy was.
Heard many tales about how Awolowo promised the Igbo he would lead the Yorubas out of Nigeria in the event of the Igbos leaving, but none have been able to tell me how Awolowo was going to be able to that as a civilian who not only does not control a troop but then, was just released from an incarceration which no doubt would have decimated even his political stronghold.

Besides the legendary hatred for Awolowo by some quarters which, is usually spurious and baseless, its also difficult to see why in the 21st century Nigeria, we cannot discuss issues without spewing hatred and derogatory remarks about other tribes. What on earth would have warranted remarks such as ''Just like a typical Yoruba man who cannot be trusted''.....Some cannot help but remain slaves to the debauchery of their depraved minds...

I remember Ken, diminutive, ebullient, intelligent, creative and erudite. Reminding me of his last words is about the saddest thing I have been made to remember all my life. As sad as it is, going through the lines word by word, prophetic, valid, undisputable and adamantine. I am the more terrified about the project called Nigeria. For this project to survive and or succeed, their must be utmost and genuine heartfelt atonement by all. But alas, what do I read on Nairaland, ignorance, hate, arrogance, psychotic tendencies, etc etc all symptomatic of multi-generational depraved minds.

Well, Ken was spot on and his very words are much more valid than they were during his time. Niger Delta militancy, BH debacle, stomach infrastructure disciples, morally bankrupt leaders and followers, un-informed, un-articulate citizenry, villains in all nooks and crannies.....He stood at the threshold of history and like an actor he was, he's had his entry and then his exit. His place is guaranteed in history and that is independent of the survival or other wise of the phantom entity called Nigeria because already, his life and struggles have been properly documented for posterity by sane minds of sane environments and climes.

Ken was one of the greatest Nigerians of the Post Independent era!

PDP has produced more Christain governors in SW than other parties. Does that mean PDP is a Christian party?

All this religious antics are crap if you ask me. What is most important is the credibilty and the performance of the one in charge. Little wonder most south westerners doesn't even realise the fact above that there have been more christian governors.

FFk maliciously said APC governors are made up of 80 % muslims in order to manipulate the poplulace toward voting PDP against the facts above. What he maliciously lfet out is the fact that in South-East and South South governors have been 100% christians (and almost certainly, their deputies too!)

So Where is the Ismalization of Nigerian? In fact, should the majority of the Northan muslim population vote against PDP since PDP is the one playing the religion politics?
Nice one except the misrepresentation of fact about the first Nigerian Head of the Federal Republic which was Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa who was elected prime minister and was the Chief Executive of the Nigerian government at the time. Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe was appointed (note, appointed and not elected) the Governor-General of Nigeria at independent to perform ceremonial roles akin to that of the British Monarch since we adopted the British parliamentarian system of government. When we became a republic in 1963, his title was changed to president and his roles remained ceremonial. He was president but not in the mould of the executive president we have today which was as a result of changing from parliamentarian system to the American type Presidential system!

Gbawe: @Topic.

I don't support Fayose being denied his mandate to lead Ekiti through the use of back door tactics. I believe Fayemi lost the election to Fayose. Nonetheless, this is politics and any legitimate and legal tactics to defeat a foes is 'par for the course'. If the APC Fayemi camp has now seen a legally pertinent argument establishing the case, beyond doubt, that Fayose was disqualified from running as a gubernatorial candidate then they would be incorrigible victims for not using this advantage to confront PDP impunity and lawlessness.

The same thing happened in the past when some stakeholders tried to prevent Ibori from contesting to be a governor. Those brave stakeholders took their case to court and argued correctly that Ibori had been convicted of a criminal offence in the UK and thus disqualified from participating in a guber race in Nigeria. OBJ, with his mind settled on another 'criminal son' in Ibori, would have non of it. The judge brazenly declared that the Ibori convicted of criminal behaviour in the UK was not the same Ibori vying to be Governor In Nigeria. Of course we all now know this to be false and another disgrace to corrupt Nigerian judiciary and the lawless backbone of Nigerian leaders OBJ and GEJ commonly typify.

Fayose won but the APC should not let go if there is a legally verifiable reason barring Fayose from contesting in the first place. Enough of the PDP foisting convicted criminals and felons on Nigeria.

Fayose on his part, if he is not the thug people claim he is, should never use thuggery and violence in an an effort to intimidate the judicial process. That is unacceptable in civilised and democratic society. I think Fayose knows that a legally enforceable case against him can be established and this is why he is acting desperately. Most folks can admit he won but Nigeria should never seek to be a Country where law and order is relegated to the back because of political agenda. If it can be proven that Fayose was disqualified from running then let this be a watershed case that perhaps puts an end to PDP's practice of presenting disqualified convicted criminals and felons as candidates for important public office. They have gotten away with it for far too long.
You have said it all, the question is, are there no credible member of PDP in Ekiti State? why a man with a luggage-ful of negativity? Same across board, why can't PDP evolve a mechanism for fielding credible candidates that an average Nigerian can reckon with?

The Police have no power to disqualify any candidate from standing for election, such power is vested only in the Judiciary and the Electoral body. Where even the Electoral Body exercises such power, it could nullified by the Court of LAW.

They have no right to come and harass us in our own land. This is our land. And until the end of our term I am the legitimate authority to govern this state. My term, this first term ends in November. And until that time I am still the governor. I have the legitimate authority to secure life of our citizens. Nobody, I repeat nobody can threaten or persecute us. We are here. We are here with full backing of the law. And we shall secure the law to fullest for the protection of life and property of our people. -Governor Rauf Aregbesola, upon militarisation of Osun
