Car Talk / Re: Nigeria Begins Implementation Of 35% Levy On Imported New Vehicles by Nosyke(m): 7:55am On Sep 18, 2014

Ok, I see. The fire is what he went to purchase with the 9.3million dollars.

Sister, please do us all a Favour and stop typing poo all over this thread .

Try and be objective and look at the brighter side of this. How do you think we will attain self sufficiency and even grow if we continue relying on imported items even ordinary toothpick?

Have you even tried imagining the multiplier effect of a vibrant auto industry? Spare parts dealers, tire manufacturers, electricians, battery sellers. What of the people that will be directly employed in these factories. Restaurants that will serve these industries? Do you think the US, Japan and other major car producing countries did so by replying on imported cars?

Everything must not be seen from the ethno-religious and/or party prism.

P.s : your grammar is terrible, maybe you should spend more time upgrading yourself.
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Are You In Abuja? Become A Sales Consultant With Jumia (the No.1 Online Retailer by Nosyke(m): 3:25pm On Sep 15, 2014
Jumia is gradually loosing it...their credibility, efficiency and effectiveness. Seems once a Nigerian brand SEEMS to be making it, they just relax and now shove whatever they feel like in the face of their customers. I made an order for a Dell Inspiron 4G RAM, 500Gig , 15.6 inches laptop on the 28th of August.Till today;15-09-14, I havent gotten my parcel (this was supposed to be a birthday gift for someone on the 6th Of September). I have been calling JUMIA CUTOMER CARE almost daily to check on my order, (of course with my credit) yet the customer care guys who are always quick to apologise (even though unremorsefuly) have said that they escalated my complaint. Apparently, we have different definitions of EXCALATION.

I also placed 2 orders on 12-09-14 and today its already here not without issues. One item came in first ( for me to realise that their POS machine isnt working, not having made cash arrangments, I had to borrow money from a colleaugue to pay CASH). I have just been called that the second item is around.

Now, how come JUMIA couldnt harmonize these orders? How come JUMIA's POS machines arent working?, HOW COME AN ORDER PLACED on the 28 OF AUGUST 2014 hasnt been delivered till today 15-09-14 (Just from Lagos to Abuja) despite being told by the Customer guys that my parcel is in Abuja hub.

Jumia needs to look inwards and fix this before their reputation is dragged in the mud. I have seen loads of complaints against Jumia-ranging from delivered being different from the one ordered (infact, I bought a shoe last year, the size was way bigger than what I ordered), to lack of harmonization of virtual store with physical store and many others.

Career / Advice For New Job Seekers From A Seasoned Interviewer by Nosyke(m): 2:24pm On Sep 11, 2014
Over the last decade and a half as a proprietary trader I have been involved in various roles interviewing and hiring applicants. During my last four years at T3 Trading Group, I have received over 16,000 resumes and have met with hundreds people. As you can imagine, I have seen it all. The following is some advice based on my experience:

Let's begin with the application process. You see my job ad online and decide to press the button to apply, sending your resume to my inbox. I will probably spend twenty seconds or less looking at it. Realize this resume is an advertisement. It reflects all of your achievements to date. Make sure that in that twenty seconds I see the highlights. Yes, I care that you had a job in High School as a waiter at Pizza Shack... it shows me that you have a strong work ethic. However, including bullet points highlighting how you “provided excellent service to customers” and “ delivered food to customer's tables in a timely and courteous manner” is not necessary. I know what a waiter does. I was one. I get it; and having to spend my time reading a waiter's job description takes away from my time reading the important stuff.

Make sure you highlight the things that make you stand out from everyone else. The 800 you earned on your math SATs certainly is an achievement, albeit a common one in my industry. It doesn't make you unique. Sorry. Nor does your roll as a member of your school's investment club--we all were members of the investment club.

Have you traveled the world? Do you play poker on a competitive level? Did you play a Division 1 sport? Do you have a paper or a book that got published? Get me to want to read your cover letter.

Speaking of cover letters. Write one, and include it in your application... even if it's not “required.” If you have a decent resume, I am going to look for more. If you don't include a cover letter, I may just move on to the next applicant who did. ...and make sure it is tailored to the job you are applying for! A generic cover letter says one thing: “I'm too lazy or too disinterested in the job I'm applying for to put in any extra work.” If you were thinking about including a boilerplate letter, don't even bother. More often than not, you will just be ignored.

Structure the cover letter like you would a five paragraph essay. Have an introduction, a thesis, paragraphs supporting the thesis, and a conclusion. If you don't know how to construct a five paragraph essay, call your ninth grade teacher. Hopefully s/he will be able to help you.

Now it's my turn. I have to make a decision if I want to write follow up questions so I can get more of a sense of who you are before I call you into my office. If I do ask you questions, PUT SOME RESEARCH AND THOUGHT INTO YOUR ANSWERS. Answer the questions honestly and thoroughly....and don't plagiarize. If you write at a twelfth grade level, but answer my inquiries like a professional author, I will google your answer and quickly find out that your are not only lazy, but also unethical. You will not be moving forward in the selection process.

At this point you may get an invitation to come in for an interview, or you may not. If I decide that you are not a fit (and spend the extra time explaining to you why), please do not try to “teach me a lesson” and tell me your “thoughts”... it shows me that in addition to being unqualified, that you are also a jerk. Say “thank you for your time” and move on.

So now it's time for the interview. Book extra time for travel. Get here an hour early and hang out at a coffee shop until 15 minutes before your scheduled time, and then come to my office. I don't care that the subway was down/there was bad traffic/you had to floss your cat.... none of that matters. If you can't show up on time for our first meeting, there wont be a second.

Dress appropriately. Learn to how to tie a tie. Wear deodorant. Brush your teeth. Bring paper copies of your resume. And for G-d's sake, leave your backpack at home. This is a job interview, not a seventh grade sleepover party.

When you meet me, firmly shake my hand and look me in the eyes. If you're nervous, make sure you have a paper towel. A wet, limp handshake makes one hell of a horrible first impression.

Make sure you're prepared for the interview. Research the role, my company, and my background. If I tell you that there is going to be a written test....be prepared for that too. If you say you want to be a trader, but don't know where the S&P500 closed last night, I am going to doubt your passion for this career.

If I ask you a question and you don't know the answer, don't try to bs me. I can smell it from a mile away. I once had a student who came in and said he was interested in Philosophy, so I asked him who was his favorite philosopher. He answered, “Socrates.” I followed up by asking him which of Socrates' books was his favorite. He responded “all of them, I can't pick just one.” In his entire life, Socrates never wrote anything down. Interview over.

If you make it through all of my questions, now it's your turn. Ask THOUGHTFUL questions. If you can find the answer on Google, don't ask it. Make me believe that you are really interested in both me and this role. If you don't, the next applicant will.

Yes, send an email thanking me for my time. I appreciate that, and it will make me remember you and keep you fresh in my mind when I decide who makes it to the next round. If you really want to stand out, follow up with a hand written card.

I know many of you will think this is common sense, but unfortunately common sense isn't that common, so for the rest of you, I hope this helped

So public officials signed a contract with a private entity to provide a service to the public (that was previously free and should be free) that leads to the people having to pay the private entity for at extortionate and criminal prices.

If this is an attempt at a joke, it is sick.

Having said that, was the dead person in anyway linked to either of the index case, secondary contacts or what? Has the person traveled to any of the ebola hit countries of Liberia, Sierra Leone, and or Guinea?.

Who confirmed that it was a ebola caused death, have there been tests on the dead person's serum/blood?

Lots of questions to ask

Education / Re: NUC: List Of Illegal Degree Awarding Institutions Operating In Nigeria by Nosyke(m): 2:17am On Aug 25, 2014
NUC should be more proactive - as a matter of urgency NUC embark on a massive sensitization using the various media channels especially new media (Facebook, Twitter etc) since most of the admission seeking public are youths. These are in addition to conventional media like TV, radio and newspaper adverts to capture parents.

They should also include a comprehensive list of 'approved/legal universities' both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in every year's JAMB, WAEC , NECO,NABTEB brochures. Furthermore, they should also make adequate enlightenment visits to Association of Principals of Nigeria; this way principals sound pass the information across to their SS 3 students who are most likely to seek admission into higher institutions.

Finally, parents should always ensure they know where their wards apply to for admission not just to check legality or not of the potential schools but also to be sure of the financial implications of such schools.

There's a statue in Yaba, Lagos, of a man, whom many in Nigeria have forgotten. His family never have. And now, we all have a chance to remember him, and in a way, to honour him. He is the man on our one Naira coin.

Herbert Olayinka Samuel Heelas Badmus Macaulay, had a daughter, Sarah Idowu Abigail, who would get married and give birth to a son, Babatunde Kwaku Adadevoh. Babatunde would grow up to become a doctor, and have kids of his own. One of these children, Stella Ameyo, became, like her father, a doctor.

She would go on to work at a hospital in Obalende, Lagos, First Consultant Hospital, not very far from where her famous ancestor was once imprisoned by the British. It was to be at that that place of work that Stella Ameyo was to perform an act that would save the lives of possibly hundreds of thousands, and sacrifice her own in return.

On July 20, 2014, a patient was wheeled in from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport. Patrick Sawyer, the patient, had shown signs of high fever during his flight from Monrovia, and was taken straight from the airport to the hospital. By the next day, his condition had deteriorated, and he was immediately placed under observation, while his blood sample was taken, and sent for tests. That same day, Mr. Sawyer insisted, with the help of officials of the Liberian Embassy, on being discharged. Stella Ameyo, as supervising doctor, stood her ground that he should not leave the hospital. It was at that point, while reinserting his needles, that she came in contact with him, and in effect signed her own death warrant. One of her junior colleagues, Justina Obi Ejelonu, who had the day before when Sawyer was brought in, helped in checking him, also assisted in placing him back in care. Like Stella Ameyo Adadevoh, Justina Obi Ejelonu, has passed away.

There is no other word to describe the actions of both women, and indeed their entire facility. In preventing the escape of this patient who had insisted on leaving, in his condition, for Calabar, 750 kilometres away, both women saved countless lives. What if Mr. Sawyer had decided that the best way to go to Calabar was to go to Jibowu and take a bus? Even if he'd chosen to go by air, which would have made his fellow passengers that much easier to trace, the potential damage is incalculable.

The most tragic part of the passing of both women is that they cannot even be buried decently, and with all the respect that their sacrifice demands. The very bug that cut them down is so virulent, so unforgiving, that even that honour, will be deprived them.

The sacrifice that Dr. Adadevoh and Nurse Ejelonu have made is the highest form of sacrifice that any man, or woman, can make for his, or her, fellow human being. It is said that there is no greater love than to lay down your life for your friend. Both women, and their colleague, put their lives on the line for 170 million of their fellow citizens, many of whom do not even understand the concept of what it means to be a citizen. The very least that Nigeria can do in appreciation, is to honour them. I have a suggestion for such an honour, and not some meaningless title or coin which will soon fall out of use. Nigeria should declare August 19 each year a national holiday, and in the names of both women. That way, some Nigerian child in six decades can ask his parent, "Mummy, who is Stella Ameyo Adadevoh?" And the parent can reply, "That woman saved my life, and the lives of all of us". It is the least we can do. It is the least we should do.
