There is nothing wrong in laying off staff to save cost. What is wrong is doing it arbitrarily. It's as rife a case as the impunity and negligence of MTN communications.
Due notice must be given to staff to keep them abreast of matters that would affect them indirectly or vice-versa. A month or less @ least.
But they are aware of the absence of sanity in our country, then they take advantage of our negligence and stab us behind the back like Judas with their unfair treatment of locals.

I currently suffer d same thing and can relate with OP. Most distasteful is the fact that you could have done more for most of these desertee friends. Life is not tit for tat but sometimes, because of the sacrifice you put in for others, you expect you will at least get a recompense even in the least form.
However, what you get are insults and rejections that would be otherwise meted out to inanimate things as toxic waste.
My advice; Be strong and look ahead for better times, you've been on top before: know your enemies and your friends better so that when you bounce back, you can defend your space.
Some friends you reach out to for assistance will ridicule or belittle you, take note of them. Not for jealousy but for motivation.
No problem lasts forever, press buttons until there are no fingers nor buttons to press and you'd strike gold soon!

As much as the business is reaching extinction I'd like to state the importance of its presence still even with the advent of modern call cultures in terms of cheaper tariffs and easier access.
I needed to meet up with a friend sometime in a very rowdy area and my phone battery had just died. Fortunately, I discovered a lady running one of those call centre-spots by the roadside and patronised her service.
Bottom line; I was able to contact my friend thanks to the existence of this call center. The importance of the business cannot be overruled as emergencies may become the sole instigation for patronage of this business.
I am sure if illustrious ones amongst us can come up with ideas that would suit modern societal needs, the business can be revived again.
