That person earning N12k a month could probably make more by farming or doing a laundry business or even selling recharge cards.

While you are at it why are you comfortable browsing the net when you could have given that money to someone who is poor? Are you really selfish?
12k per week or month. How can someone earn 12k in today's world.
Such a person can never feed his/her own mouth not to talk of buying candle or "atupa".

But the truth is that, there is a powerful cabal behind this power general mismagement.
Otedola is still the largest importer of diesel in Africa, dominating the entire local market. He will never upport deregulation.

PHCN should be disbanded , They have failed us.

There is no reason elecricity tarrif should be increased when power distribution is at its lowest.

PoliticsElectricity Tariff Set To Rise by olafolarin(op): 5:10am On Mar 26, 2010
Consumers are in for more charges as the Federal Government may approve the take-off of a new tariff regime of N8.50k by the first week of June this year if gas supply remains stable. The current tariff is N6 per kilowatt.

The disclosure came as the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) announced yesterday that power generation had increased to 3,600 megawatts.

The Assistant General Manager, Rates and Competition of Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr. Dikko Halilu, said at the flag-off of stakeholders’ forum on metering code in Abuja that the commission had issued a notice to commence minor review of electricity tariffs.

“We have already given out notice for a minor review of prices. Under the review, we are going to look into whether there have been any escalation in cost of gas and changes in exchange rates before it can be effected.

“As you know, the cost of gas, inflation rate and exchange rate affect the operator’s cost. Latest by the first week of June, we are going to change the tariff price to N8.50k; though we do not expect that to happen because the rate of inflation has come down; material cost and exchange rates have stabilised to some extent,” he said.

“We will enter into an agreement with NGC that if there is more gas, then we will agree to an increase in the price of gas. Presently, gas price is pegged at about $88 last year, but this year it is being expected to go for $132 per cubic feet,” he added.
He said with the expected increase in gas price, the tariff was being projected to be N8.15k per kilowatt.
According to Halilu, government while considering the approval of the new tariff would be looking at how to help the operators recover cost.

ss“If the price granted to electricity producers are not enough for them, then they have to show adequate justification for another increase.  We are only to allow efficient cost and nothing short of that. Whatever will enable producers to recover their cost of production and a reasonable return on investment is what we will consider,” he said.

Sole Administrator of NERC, Mallam Imamuddeen Talba, said the purpose of the metering code is to improve service delivery to consumers and to ensure proper accountability through accurate metering.

Talba said the task of the committee on metering code is to monitor its effective implementation in order to achieve accurate measurement of electricity utilisation in the country.

Meanhwile, the Managing Director of PHCN, Mr. Hussein Labo, has confirmed that power generation has increased to 3,600mw. He also said all power stations are currently generating power, a position that was corroborated by NERC.

“In the last two days, electricity has gone up to 3,500mw on Wednesday and 3,600mw yesterday and almost all the power plants are running,” he said.

It is totally disheartening to read some terrible comments against the person of Bola Tinubu. Are we still contesting his academic qualifications after convincing proof he provided fo everybody to see.(You can never become a Treasurer with Mobil-an american oil firm with a fake american certificate). Are we doubting the Chicago Court that discarded drug cases against Tinubu as baseless but forfeited the amount they met in his account which belongs to his mother. Are we confused about the planned, structured and people-oriented leadership he brought to Lagos state since 1999 after decades of lawlessness by the military. The Lagos Badagry Light Rail Project,BRT,Water schemes,Oshodi evacuation,KAI,etc were all programs concieved, designed and slated for implementation by Tinubu before the expiration of his term. Are we not mindful of his political prowess which withered OBJ's antics in 2007.OBJ's tsunami swept acros South-West and took all the states along with it except BOLA TINUBU'S lagos state. This is the reason his admirers call him the last man standing.Instead of being deterred,he groomed proressive minds like Kayode fayemi, rauf Aregbesola,Dipo Dina,Kayode Soyinka,Muiz banire, etc and prepare them to take active positions in moving Nigeria and Nigerians forward. While almost all the governors in the 1999-2007 set were tried for one fraud, money laundering charges or another,Bola Tinubu had nothing on him which FBI,M6,EFCC under ambitious Nuhu Ribadu could nail him for even though any offence at all would have been enough to crucify him.
Bola Tinubu is a man with personal mistakes and shortcomings just like any other human being. He has earned respect and admiration across board for his political dexterity, progressive orientation ,managerial wizardry, etc more than any former or currently serving governors.
He might be a close friend to Justice Ayo salami,i am sure he will never use his position to influence any case as Justice Ayo salami is well known and respected for his strict adherence to truth and unflinching uprightness
Senator Dahiru is just being mischievous and his attempt to falsify truth will soon be exposed.May i remind him that the entire PDP with OBJ as their leader made more verocious attempt at destroying Tinubu's political relevance but they failed woefuly. They employed the "Kitchen Sink" method by " throwing everything-certificate furgery, fraud, murder,Narcotics, money laundering, embezzlement, etc at him BUT nothing, I mean NOTHING sticks.
Instead of dragging his name in mud,we should all be proud of his achievements despite his many obstacles. This attempt by Senator Dahiru is one of his many obstacles.
PoliticsTinubu: On Justice And Integrity I Stand by olafolarin(op): 7:27pm On Mar 25, 2010
My attention has been drawn to a six-page advertorial, run in various newspapers, including the Daily Sun of 12 March 2010, which contains a petition against Hon. Justice Ayo Salami, President of the Court of Appeal. Where the advertorial concerns me is one of the sworn affidavits featured in the publication, by Senator Umaru Dahiru, Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, in which he mentioned my name. On Senator Dahiru’s sworn affidavit, as featured in that advertorial, I have the following to say:

• That I new Senator Umaru Dahiru through Senator Abu Ibrahim, a very close friend of long standing. Ever since I met Senator Dahiru about eight months ago, we have not met socially more than twice.

• First, it is false that I invited Justice Ayo Salami to my house in Abuja because there was no cause for me to do so; and there was never been any reason for me to do so. So, it is blatant falsehood, Senator Dahiru’s claim that I discussed the Sokoto case with the Honourable Justice and he told me that the case would be reviewed and awarded in favour of the Democratic Peoples Party’s candidate. This is plain fiction.

• However, as admitted by Senator Dahiru (see Paragraph 14 of his affidavit), he took the initiative of approaching me in Abuja, to intervene on his behalf, with Justice Ayo Salami, over the Sokoto gubernatorial appeal case before the Court of Appeal. Senator Abu Ibrahim, through whom I first Senator Dahiru, was a witness on that occasion, when Senator Dahiru told me he had approached Justice Salami in company of some other people, but that Justice Salami flatly refused to interfere in any matter before the Court of Appeal. He therefore said he was counting on my goodwill because he believed Justice Salami was my friend, since we both came from Lagos.

• But immediately Senator Dahiru broached his mission, I told him point blank that I had never before and will never discuss such matters with Justice Salami. I told him I did not intend to start such a practice now. I added that, even if I wanted to intervene, I did not think that the Salami I knew would change his mind, once it was made up, especially as it bordered on ethical conduct concerning a case before his court. All these can be confirmed from Senator Abu Ibrahim who, by the grace of God, is still alive and well.

• Senator Dahiru’s claim that I pleaded with him to facilitate Justice Salami’s confirmation must be seen as a cheap blackmail that it is. As far as I know, Justice Salami was the only candidate for confirmation. As far as I know too, the senator and his committee had a constitutional responsibility to perform in that screening. Is the distinguished senator then saying that he did the Honourable Justice a favour so that he could influence him in future to mis-carry justice?

• I feel constrained to insert this advertorial because I strongly believe that facts must be stated, if only for the records. Besides, it is highly immoral for a politician who is also a lawyer, to cast aspersion on the integrity of a high caliber judicial officer for narrow political interests.

• Let me re-emphasise that all my life I have believed in the sanctity and integrity of the judicial process. As Governor of Lagos State, I took bold and proactive steps to uphold the dignity and autonomy of the judiciary, an institution that I believe is the bedrock of democracy; and one to which I always took recourse, to protect the interest of Lagos State. It is certainly too late in the day for me to change this firm and unshakable belief in the sanctity of the judicial process.

PoliticsRe: Tears And Anger Roll, As Fashola Destroys Mile 12 Market In Lagos - News by olafolarin(m): 12:16am On Mar 13, 2010
wirinet:
The problem with most Nigerians is that we only see things from our own perspectives and support actions that either favour us or not directly affecting us.

One thing we should learn is that societies are built around people and not necessarily structures. Government should be about people and that is why democracy is defined as government of the people for the people by the people. The Lagos state government behaves as if they would not need the peoples vote to retain power in 2011.

Now i am not necessarily against demotions of slums and illegal structures per se, what i am against is carrying out such actions without making alternatives available to cushion the effect of such activities on people. People are still suffering from a similar demolition of Marako some twenty years after. This government had carried out similar demolitions all over lagos and rendered so many people Jobless, especially in the worsening economic climate people are facing today. When the government decides to embark on some palliatives by building shops, the government itself would price the shops beyond the people that were displaced in the first place. Yaba market is a typical example.

I am not making a case for illegal shops and structures, what i am making a case for is some kind of social responsibility from our governments.

Leaders like Awolowo and Jakande built houses, shops and schools for the poor in the society, even though they were poor construction, they were very useful to so many poor people in the society. Our present Governor believes in demolishing facilities for the poor like ramshackle schools and shops without providing alternatives.

To this governor, the poor should simply leave Lagos so he can embark on his Mega city project for the super rich.
You got it all wrong. Its obvious from your assumptions that you didnt know the area demolished so well.
Ajelogo was a temporary market created to ease the pressure on Mile 12 Market. But it as now turned into armed robbers, assasins and hoodlums hide out.I used to visit a family friend very close to that area and its scary at night.
Most of the shops in the market as been turned into makeshift residence for these hoodlums and prostitutes.
It is a most welcomed development because the market has completely outlived its usefulness.
Making alternative for Ajelogo is like creating another slum-market.
The best thing to do is to demolish the market as it is and construct a befitting international market that will have alll security dtails,
