ManirBK: Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party on Wednesday in Kaduna reiterated his plan to privatise the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation(NNPC), if elected president on Feb 23. Abubakar spoke at a town hall meeting with ward, local government and state party leaders in the state at the Kaduna Trade Fair Complex.
He said that the NNPC had failed to serve the purpose for which it was established in 1977. According to him, selling-off the Corporation and all the three refineries is the best option for the country, likening it to the sale of Nigerian Telecommunication Limited (NITEL).
Abubakar said Nigeria is among the biggest producers of crude, but lamented that the country still imports refined products for local consumption at exorbitant prices to the detriment of the common man. He said, if elected President, he would deregulate the NNPC and sell it to Nigerians. the way Obasanjo sold NITEL. However, he forgot to mention that the sale of NITEL was disastrously done. Under Obasanjo, NITEL went through several botched sales and management turnaround contracts. First, 51 per cent of the shares was sold to a group of investors under the trading name of Investors International London limited. The sale was cancelled after the investors failed to pay. Then in 2003, , the government approved a management turnaround contract with a firm called Pentascope. The contract was cancelled in 2005 after it became clear Pentascope did not have the adequate resources to run NITEL. In 2005, government again offered NITEL to Orascom. This failed again, leading the government to sell it to a subsidiary of Transcorp in 2007. The sale was revoked in 2009. In 2014, the firm was sold to NATCOM, a group of investors led by Tunde Ayeni. Ayeni since then has been running it as NTEL

While the godfathers, united in their single vision of raping, pillaging and looting Nigeria into nothingness, looked beyond tribal, ethnic and religious lines to divvy up the country as they saw fit, the average Nigerian was taught that this was the only way politics could be practised.
But a new candidate emerged and threw the rule book away. Omoyele Sowore ran a presidential campaign, the likes of which this country has never before seen. By so doing, he dispelled every myth and fallacy perpetuated by the ruling classes to hold Nigeria in a vice-like grip of corruption and fear. By all accounts, he was correct when he said it is impossible to stop an idea whose time has come.
Perhaps the most crucial part of any political campaign is the fundraising. Whoever raises the funds not only determines the trajectory of the campaign but also the heart and soul of the government that follows. Many people thought it was impossible for ordinary Nigerians to fund a campaign since people had been previously conditioned to believe that it could only be done by a handful of people injecting hundreds of millions – most of it funds stolen from government coffers – in order to run a successful campaign. 150 million naira from thousands of individual donors later, Sowore’s vision for a campaign funded by the Nigerian people – a vision that was initially mocked – has now been validated. The donations, ranging from as little as 50 naira to a million, broke the mould and have finally confirmed that the Nigerian people will put their resources behind their hopes and aspirations for a better country.
Money, however, isn’t all that a campaign needs. Campaigns require different kinds of resources and skill sets. A successful campaign needs strategy and policy analysis and development, grassroots mobilisation, and a good handle on public relations, media and communication with the electorate, logistics, security and planning amongst others. A significant portion of the resources of any campaign are typically spent on these activities. Sowore ran a world class campaign with remarkable staff being pooled from all over the world. The difference is that they were all volunteers, a phenomenon that hitherto had been alien in Nigerian politics. Even beyond the monetary donations, people have donated billions of naira’s worth of skills, resources and time.
For those who wonder how Sowore’s upstart presidential bid and a five-month old party could have catapulted into becoming one of the top three political parties and movements in Nigeria, they need look no further than to the thousands of global experts in areas as diverse as policy, media, analytics, planning and political strategy that his campaign has attracted. People drawn from all around the world – from within Nigeria and spanning every continent – to birth a true revolution of ideas.
Perhaps the most telling indication that this new paradigm had been engaged with by Nigerians is the extent to which they claimed this campaign as their own. Beyond the official strategies implemented by the campaign, this organic movement saw Nigerians taking full ownership of the campaign. Unprompted, they created jingles and flyers; they engaged their fellow Nigerians on street corners and in public transport. Nigerians defended their new-found hope to the hilt; refusing to return to the brainwashed days of APC and PDP.
Indeed, it looks like this progressive movement tackled the fear of the ruthlessness in Nigerian politics. Sowore’s campaign successfully disrupted the paradigm of fear and territorialism that had dominated establishment politics in Nigeria. Politics that suggested that politicians are tied to regional and geographic turfs and could only play politics within their spheres of influence. The narrative that suggests successful politics cannot be implemented without violence and intimidation.
The Sowore campaign engaged with Nigerians in every single geopolitical zone and worked across all of the states. There are many who said it would have been suicidal to visit the Daura home town of General Buhari or the Adamawa hometown state of the PDP presidential candidate. The Sowore campaign, however, made it a point of visiting both places and engaged with IDPs, herdsmen and local folks who had been neglected by their leading townsmen.
For the first time in Nigeria’s history, a presidential campaign was run in a true grassroots nature. Rallies were substituted with town hall sessions that allowed for unfettered engagement between the candidate and the electorate. Different sessions were organised to accommodate different constituencies, ranging from faith-based groups to economic round tables for business leaders, to on-site visitations of workers, and engagements with students and youth.
In every other part of the world, campaigns are serious business. A candidate’s decision to run starts with the development of a clear agenda and a manifesto that is not just a statement of intent, but also includes a clear sense of the vision and how that vision is to be achieved and paid for. Nigerian politics, up until now, had not operated on that basis. There has never been any clear difference between the parties and the programmes of the APC and the PDP has always been essentially the same. For the first time in Nigeria’s political history, the Sowore campaign turned that paradigm on its head; with the candidate and the party providing a clear agenda on how to create jobs, tackle security and deal decisively with corruption, but they also provided a clear path on how those programmes would be implemented and paid for. This meant that for the first time, people with an expertise in project development and management and strong practical experience in how to deliver successfully on massive projects were at the helm of a campaign, as opposed to the usual political jobbers.
It is clear that it will no longer be business as usual in Nigeria’s political space as there is a clamouring for engaged politics. Sowore has set the pace and he is no longer a lone voice calling out in the wilderness. His disruptive methods and approach are catching on. For the first time in our nation’s history all the leading candidates subjected themselves to town hall sessions. The scales have fallen. This is an awakening that will lead to a progressive and prosperous Nigeria as envisioned by Omoyele Sowore.

sammieyion: Third Force Presidential candidate running on the People’s Trust (PT) platform, Mr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has written the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu requesting a further extension of the Presidential and National Assembly elections because the one week extension is rather too short to conclude the stated enormous logistics requirement for the polls.
The candidate, who lately led the online polls of most preferred candidate amongst the third force, argued in a letter to the INEC chairman that another extension was reasonable in view of the logistics burden on the contestants and the parties. The candidates and the parties, he said, would now have to repeat logistics preparations that have hitherto been deployed to achieve the level of mobilization at the February 16 scheduled election.
He stressed that “It is my considered opinion that in the haste to stick to a quickly announced date for the election, the Commission may not have paid adequate attention to the attendant voter apathy that may result if adequate confidence building measures are not implemented to win back ‘would-be’ voters for the next date of polling”
As a result and because a potential voter’s apathy in some section of the country or all of the country may substantially affect the results of the election, a ”new date of election should be between three to four weeks from February 16 not one week from February 16 as previously announced. This is more so for self-funded candidates and political parties who do not have the possibilities or intentions of falling quickly on the State treasuries to refinance another logistic deployment”
The candidate regarded as one of the most cerebral amongst the contenders noted that campaigning should also resume undoubtedly in consonance with extant legislation that allow campaign to continue up till 24 hours before elections, in order to achieve the same level of mobilization of voters as before February 16th.
In his letter copied to the United Nations representatives, Observer and Civil Society Groups, the diplomatic community and the media he added that “the Commission should liaise with the National Orientation Agency (NOA), who should use their national networks to ensure mobilization of communities, social and interest groups to reach potential voters in order to avoid voter apathy at the next date of election”

The Statement read;
"The attention of Nigeria Customs Service has been drawn to a disturbing video going viral with conflicting narratives.While it is painful and totally unnecessary to lose life in anti-smuggling operations, today at Shagamu interchange along Ijebu Ode, attempt to obstruct lawful performance of duty by passengers of a commercial bus (a white Toyota Hiace) suspected to be carrying bales of used clothing led to the death of a young man (Godwin) and serious injury of a Customs Officer, ASC1, Destiny Onebamho.
Contrary to some narratives, the young man was not a passenger of the bus but a good citizen who always come to fetch water for Customs Patrol men anytime they return to the base.
Preliminary finding indicate that it was during the skirmishes and struggle to disarm the Officer that the rifle discharged and hit the friend of the Customs (Godwin) who lost his life. The Service is already in touch with the bereaved family.
Sadly, it should be noted that while attention shifted to the dead and the wounded, the passengers who filmed with inciting commentaries boarded their vehicle and left, leaving the wrong impression that it was one of them that was killed.
While the wounded Officer is under intensive care at the hospital, the patrol team has been recalled to the office for further investigation."

I am very much aware of the text book economic definition and it's not as complex as you want it to sound - for lay men on the thread, it is simply the economy of individual - ability to ascribe monetary value to each activity of the individual or break each individuals purchase above consumption - if you want to use consumption pattern- now between 2011 - 2015 we know how many service companies came on board konga - jiji- jumia telecom providers all of this are service sector economies - entertainment venues eateries and event centres and hotels - all of them provide intangible services that can be shut down if adverse economic challenges affect their market, but that aside, how many new real industry companies came on board that employed people on a grand scale that provided nhis - pensionable salaries such as car part manufacturing, housing items manufacturing, construction, packaging, agro-business value chain enhancement - you see the latter I just mentioned are the real economic growers and not the services (services are just in between the producers and consumers) - in nigeria we have a lot of brief case billionaires and they because of high volume purchase they make - affect the calculation of our GDP- one person steals N1b buys land, builds a hotel and furnishes it- it belongs to him - no transfer of wealth, all the people that worl there are paid peanuts (but you see the large volume purchases he has made, acquiring the land and building i.e one person buying toilet seats for 50 rooms, in place of 50 people buying 50 toilet seats for their various houses etc all affects our GDP calculation)

The weekly social media rating of presidential candidates engagements on the popular online platform, Facebook, on Tuesday showed that the candidate of Peoples Trust (PT), Mr. Gbenga Hashim is still leading as most popular Presidential candidate online 3 days to the 2019 Presidential election.
The latest data shows that Mr. Hashim leads the incumbent President and All Progressive Congress APC’s Presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari and major opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
Mr Hashim who first overtook President Buhari and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar on 10th December 2018 has remained on top with the highest engagements on social media consecutively ever since.
Going by the data on Tuesday, February 12th, 2019 in Abuja, Gbenga-Hashim recorded Facebook engagements in excess of 63,000 this week, while Atiku Abubakar who came behind him, recorded 56,000+.
Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), President Muhammadu Buhari is far behind with only 6000+ engagements.
The statistics also showed that the Presidential candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), Kingsley Moghalu, the candidate of Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN) ,Fela Durotoye and other others were trailing behind.
Data analysts involved in the polling project said that the data on each of the candidates’ were realistic because “Facebook represents the broad spectrum of voters who will vote in the February poll.”
According to them, “increasing engagements imply voters’ growing interest in the candidates while a decreasing result reflects voters’ disenchantment.
A static return means a candidate at a crossroads in the campaign.”
The analysts said in their report that Olawepo-Hashim’s growing engagement rating is a measure of voters’ interest in him as a third force alternative.
“He is no longer part of the pack of third-party candidates. He has moved ahead to emerge as a real alternative to both Buhari and Atiku.
This is a game changer from data perspective,” according to Segun Seriki, the lead analyst for the project.
“The latest data point to a major upset within the struggle for Nigeria’s presidency, we are making the report available to all the major candidates.”
“Our latest data reflect a major upset in the battle for the Presidency. It is no longer a two- horse race. There is now a third force that is overtaking the old alternatives. We are still following the data but for now, Olawepo-Hashim has pulled the impossible to maintain an eight weeks lead over President Buhari and Atiku Abubakar,”he said.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara, has uncovered massive fraud and theft perpetrated by Bauchi State government under Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar to the tune of N400 billion from May 2015 when he assumed office to date.
PoliticsNGR gathered that while speaking at a campaign rally in Dass, headquarters of Dass local government area on Friday, Hon Dogara presented documented evidence to a mammoth crowd of his constituents showing how thousands of non-existent people were said to have been employed in 2015 shortly after the governor came into office.
The Speaker challenged Governor Abubakar to take him to court and promised that he will defend the allegations and added that as a lawyer he knows the law and would not level false allegations against anyone if he does not have evidence.
A perusal of one of the documents indicates that not fewer than 1,200 people were said to have been employed and added into the state's payroll beginning from July 2015.
However, one of the ghost employees by name, Bappale Adamu, was said to have been born in 1899, which is 120 years ago and started work with the Bauchi state government on July 24, 2015 and will retire from the service in 2023.
Another startling revelation showed that all the 1,200 workers, though have different names and dates of birth, have the same Bank Verification Number (BVN), meaning that their entire salary was being paid into one and same bank account under different names.
The salaries vary from N39,000 to N86,000 and above.
The speaker also wondered how Bauchi State monthly salary skyrocketed from N2.6 billion per month in May 2015 to N7 billion without recruitment of additional workers, especially as the governor had early in his administration, fired thousands of political appointees engaged by former governor Isa Yuguda, which should have reduced the state's wage bill drastically.
He also accused the governor of diverting billions of local government funds in the last 3 1/2 years.
The Speaker also recalled how the governor chased away contractors renovating Dass Central Mosque but failed to renovate it after repeated promises and revealed how he personally paid for the renovation of the mosque.
It would be recalled that the Bauchi state Government had owed workers more than one year salaries following series of verifications allegedly to remove ghost workers from the state’s payroll by the present administration at its inception in 2015, but sadly, shortly after that, the monthly salary bill increased from N2.6 billion to about N7 billion.
In August 2016, political leaders and stakeholders from the state led by the Speaker sought President Mohammadu Buhari’s intervention on the non-payment of salaries which didn’t yield any result and has been the major source of disagreement between the Speaker, political leaders, stakeholders and the Bauchi state Governor.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Lagos Zonal Office, has arrested five suspected Internet fraudsters, and also recovered N31 million from them. Gistvic Reports.
The suspects – Paul Duru, Daniel Effiong, David Gold, Moses Gold and Eke Kelechi, were arrested following a petition received by the EFCC from a new generation bank.
The bank had observed suspicious transactions on an account belonging to Duru, after he received N63 million. He was subsequently arrested by operatives of the EFCC.
His arrest led to the apprehension of the other suspected fraudsters.
Investigations revealed that Duru was hired by Effiong, a “catfisher”, who presented himself as Arbara Williams, a 27-year-old Caucasian.
A “catfisher” is an individual who uses the Internet, and in particular, online dating websites to lure people into romance scam. Duru allegedly had a ‘picker’ in the United States, one John T. Benn, who received money in dollars and sent to him.
On his part, Effiong established a relationship with one Sung Yong Hwa, a Korean and Peter Davito, a Canadian.
The others were arrested for allegedly involving in love scam.
They will soon be charged to court. Gistvic Reports.
