PoliticsNigeria Has Highest Cases Of Sickle Cell Disease In The World by olokfor(op): 2:09pm On Jun 21, 2015
Research report has it that Nigeria is the largest population of people with Sickle Cell Disease in the world, with over 150,000 babies born with the serious ailment yearly.

This was disclosed by a Pharmacist of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Mr Lanre Alege, during a lecture on June edition of the keep fit exercise for staff of the hospital at the Kwara stadium on Saturday.

The topic which was, ‘Sickle Cell Disease’ was carefully chosen because June 19 of every year is celebrated as world Sickle Cell Day, and Nigeria joined the rest of the world to celebrate it on Friday.

He suggested anecdotally that only five per cent of the children with Sickle Cell Disease live past the age of 10 in Nigeria, compared to over 96 per cent surviving into adulthood in the United Kingdom and the United States.

He furthermore, added that Sickle Cell Disease is a genetic disorder due to the presence of an abnormal form of haemoglobin in the red blood cells, called haemoglobin S (Hb S) instead of haemoglobin A (Hb A).

Alege, who is the Coordinator of the programme, hinted that the Red Blood Cells may contain normal haemoglobin AA only, a mixture of A and S (Hb AS) or S only.

“Persons with AS haemoglobin have sickle cell traits, and are referred to as sickle cell carriers, while those with haemoglobin SS only (Hb SS) suffers from sickle cell disease.

“Those with AA are normal without sickle cell traits.

“Haemoglobin in the red blood cell is responsible for the transportation of oxygen in the body,” he said.

Since there is no cure for sickle cell disease, Alege listed the most important components of the treatment which include; early interventions with analgesics, antibiotics, rest, good nutrition, folic acid supplementation and high fluid intake.

“At times, invasive procedures such as blood transfusion and surgery may be needed. Sickle Cell Disease is completely preventable,” he added.

Allege stressed that for the prevention of the disease, carriers should not marry AS or SS.

He urged that Churches and Mosques should refuse the joining of such people in marriage. (NAN)

PoliticsRe: "President Buhari Needs Our Support To Deliver On His Mandate" - Atiku Abubakar by olokfor(op): 2:01pm On Jun 21, 2015
Politics"President Buhari Needs Our Support To Deliver On His Mandate" - Atiku Abubakar by olokfor(op): 2:01pm On Jun 21, 2015
Former Vice President and chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar says it is dangerous for any individual or group in the ranks of the ruling party to constitute themselves into an opposition even before the constitution and take off President Muhammadu Buhari's government....

The former Vice President made the call against the backdrop of developments in the polity, which he notes are interplay of forces and interests that are dynamic, but must not be promoted to the point of being a threat to our democracy and the new administration.

In a press statement released by his media office in Abuja on Sunday, 21 June and signed by Mazi Paul Ibe, the Turaki Adamawa while acknowledging that it is legitimate and desireable for individuals or groups to seek to pursue their interest, it must be done with the benefit of sustaining our democracy and promoting equity, fair play and justice in mind.

"Anything to the contrary may jeopardise our hard-earned democracy and constitute a clog in the wheel of the new administration," Atiku said.

He noted that because of the historic nature of the mandate of President Muhammadu Buhari and the arduous challenges ahead to deliver on making Nigeria work for all Nigerians, it is important, especially for members of his own party, to rally behind him in the quest to enthrone good governance, that will spur security and stability, economic and social development, job creation, infrastructure renewal and above all a better life for Nigerians.

The former Vice President urged members of the APC to emulate the unity of all the presidential contestants after the party's Lagos primaries and support the President to form his government and get to work.

The statement exonerated Atiku Abubakar of the purported hijack of the party and the National Assembly towards 2019 as figment of the imagination of those promoting it and asked Nigerians to ignore all such insinuation. He notes that the recent outcomes of the National Assembly election contrary to insinuations are products of interplay of politics which is itself in constant motion.

"In politics, it is a mistake to expect fixed outcomes. As the President has done, let's all come to terms with what has happened in the interest of the system and move on. Suffice it to say that the new administration should be allowed a smooth take off and be allowed the atmosphere to deliver. On this, I stand with President Buhari," Atiku said.

The Turaki Adamawa while restating his unalloyed commitment to the Buhari administration pledged to back this commitment with all of the assets at his disposal. "Not only did Atiku Abubakar congratulate Buhari after his emergence as the presidential candidate of the APC at the party’s national convention in Lagos, he also handed over his best assets to the Buhari Presidential Campaign.

The former Vice President enthusiastically handled the diplomatic assignment of seeking endorsement for Dr. Adesina as the President of the African Development Bank on behalf of President Buhari and would be available for any other assignments as the President pleases. "Make no mistake about it Atiku Abubakar holds Buhari in the highest esteem, and would always remain loyal to him, and support him in every endeavour to succeed as president."

The APC chieftain also called on Nigerians with members of the President's own party taking a lead in their undiluted support of his administration. "We, the members of the President's own family need to lead in this direction for others to follow for the good of our nation and its peoples." Atiku Abubakar denounced the increasing determination of some people to draw a wedge between President Buhari and himself.

"It has become crystal clear even to the blind that the motives of these hatchet men who are desperate to take every available newspaper space is to insult, vilify and calumniate the former Vice President. "We cannot allow liars, denigrators and blackmailers and their sponsors to use Atiku as platform to ingratiate themselves with President Buhari and hijack his presidency under the pretext of loving him more than anyone else.

These political ventriloquists are hiding behind the cover of anonymity to achieve their sinister agenda of making Atiku the fall guy in the unfolding political developments."

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has says there is no polling booth in the state he doesn’t know or knows somebody, and as such, he would continue to win elections in the state.

Wike said he is responsible for the emergence of his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi, as governor, going on to describe himself as the engine room of the former governor.

Speaking with journalists at the Government House, Port Harcourt, on Saturday, June 20, Wike, said he was teaching those in Amaechi’s camp the way to play the game of politics.

He said: “The fact is that I was prepared for that election. I was a council chairman. There is nowhere in this state that I do not know. There is no ward I do not know one person.”

“As I sit down here, I can mention one, person from each ward. I know the politicians in this state. I know who has strength and who does not have strength.”

Furthermore, Wike said during the course of the campaigns he remained strong, stating that: “I never emaciated one day, the truth of the matter is that if you do the election 100 times in this state, I will win.”

There are allegations that the easy going governor knacks akpako without condoms and has in the process impregnated a woman called biodun Mcgregor who works with the Lagos state government.

According to sources

"the former Governor of Lagos State craved Biodun's rosy cheek; he admired her coral lips, and driven by his lust for the spark of her star-like eyes, Fashola threw caution to the wind and ignored the proverbial wisdom of using 'raincoat' to chop, clean mouth and waka". Sometime back, Biodun got pregnant and delivered a beautiful set of twins and all fingers pointed in the direction of a popular governor.

In the wake of the incident, Biodun's fortune turned for the better, and her world became cozier like a garden grown to full bloom. And the reason is not far-fetched.
Insider revealed that as soon as Biodun put to bed the former governor dipped into his very deep pockets and spoiled her silly with gifts of cash and expensive possessions and Speculations abound that it is likely he marries her as his second wife.
''if he decides to do so however, he wouldn’t be in the wrong as his Islamic faith allows him to have more than one wife'' argues a very source close to the former governor.
The former governor is notable for his generosity with women. Ask any woman that has been fortunate enough to cross his path and the the testimonies you will get are endless. Besides Biodun, Fashola allegedly keeps a bevy of concubines. At the mere mention of his name, the faces of his women break into infectious smiles, their hearts melt and a silent laughter dance on their lips. They would give anything to sustain his love and generosity.

Here are pics of an incident that happened in my area last two Saturdays. A guy went to his friend's place with his babe. A few hours later, the girl came out screaming rape rape rape. And later the guy came out too screaming help help help. The girl had blood on her clothes and then she was given a cloth to cover herself. But when the guy came out with blood on his body everyone was shocked and that's when we knew the girl bit off his penis and this was done with her teeth. The guy was taken to the hospital but when they got to the hospital they realized that the other part was no longer there. They had to come back home to look for the remaining part, but by then its dead, though they stitched it he's still in the hospital. Photos attached...

Now the photos are quite graphic so viewers discretion is advised...

Johannesburg - Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe blasted South Africa and Nigeria at the African Union summit this weekend, saying Africa would never agree to them getting permanent seats on the UN Security Council.

This was because they had both voted for UN Security Council Resolution 1973 in 2011, which authorised military action against the regime of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

They had betrayed the continent which could never trust them, sources reported him as saying.

Mugabe intervened in a meeting of the so-called “Committee of 10” at the summit on Saturday which was discussing possible amendments to the “Ezulwini Consensus” which stated Africa’s position on reform of the UN Security Council.

The 2005 Ezulwini Consensus was that Africa should demand at least two permanent and five non-permanent seats on the council as part of the protracted, wider reform to make it more representative of the world.

The consensus also demanded that the two permanent seats should come with the same veto powers as were enjoyed by the five current permanent members, the US, UK, China, Russia and France.

This demand for vetoes had effectively stymied Africa’s chances of reforming the council. And so the South African government was calling for Africa to adopt a more flexible approach by dropping the veto demand.

This was what the so-called G4 group of nations - Germany, Japan, India and Brazil - who were also seeking permanent seats on the council had done, as a tactical manoeuvre to try to diminish resistance to their bid.

Last year South African President Jacob Zuma said: “Africa needs to compromise - not reiterate fixed positions as it has done for the past nine years.”

And he organised a retreat of African Foreign Ministers in February 2014 to review the Ezulwini Consensus.

South Africa also intended to raise it in the Committee of 10 meeting here on Saturday. The Committee of 10 was appointed by the AU many years ago to pursue the UN Security Council reform.

But one regional official who was in the meeting said he believed that Mugabe’s attack on South Africa and Nigeria had seriously damaged South Africa’s case for reviewing the Ezulwini Consensus.

The official said Mugabe had not mentioned the two countries by name.

But it was clear to all in the room who he was referring to as he referred to African governments who had been on the UN Security Council when Resolution 1973 on Libya was adopted in 2011.

South Africa and Nigeria were both on the council at the time, occupying two of the ten, non-permanent, two-year seats. South Africa’s vote for Resolution 1973 was highly controversial even within South Africa.

But the South African government justified it on the grounds that a foreign military intervention was necessary to prevent Gaddafi’s forces slaughtering his opponents in their Benghazi stronghold, as he threatened to do.

Pretoria later condemned the Nato-led military coalition for going beyond the mandate which was to protect civilians, by helping rebels overthrow Gaddafi.

But South Africa suspects that countries like Zimbabwe are avoiding review of the Ezulwini Consensus and insisting on a hardline, maximalist position on UN Security Council reform because they don’t want bigger African countries like South Africa and Nigeria to get permanent seats on the council.
