Interesting.
Yeah it is true. But non studious attitude of us as we ought to do make it look as if cosmology is not well taken care of or studied by our Yoruba ancestors as others did in the world.

In what elite traditionalist ifaodù priests, posit according to ifá,is that the "East" is "éjì ogbè",which is what is called Ẹ̀làà(to bring for light).

"West " is "Oyèkú méjì"

You are missing the point. Read back to my previous comment and you will see I said the exact same thing. The problem is when people then come and tell us to rewrite history in order to allow their claim to be emboldened. No. It won’t happen. History is not an opinion. If you people don’t like that don’t come discuss history.
What exactly do you mean ? I stated clearly that once a people identify with another group, then there is iota of truth that their history is not of ibos ancestry.

Thank you.

What is Ogba language and what is Igbo language?
Why is the language spoken by Ogba people be called Igbo language and Igbo language is not called Ogba language?
A people's language is the language that they speak. Ogba people regardless of their history, have evolved into an ethnic group and speak Ogba language while Igbo people speak Igbo language. Why would one group claim that any word or name that is common among the two groups belong to them so, now gives them the right to force their identity on them. In the entire world, it is only the Igbo people that do this and they do this in the most idiot.tic and repulsive manner. Even in the north, you have such ethnic groups like Gwandara who's history as told even by themselves is tied to the Hausa but you never see Hausa's claiming that Gwandaras speak their language, bear their names or that they are even Hausa. They respect them as Gwandara. You don't see the French claiming that the Spanish or Portuguese speak French or are French because they bear similar names or have some common words in the languages. But for the Igbos, they must constitute themselves into nuisance in their desperation to force Igbo identity on others. tueh!
Are you saying , language is the absolute reason of same ethnic group ? Linguistically, there is Ecological factor of Language in migration of people. Kindly do research on it for you to have a grasp of reason, language alone does not mean, same ethnic grouping.

Today, Nigeria Franca Lingual is English language. Does it mean Nigeria with over 100 language and over 200 dialects are English people ? In as much certain people migrate from place to place, then there is certainty for influence to come up.

The Olukumi are Yoruba people who migrated to Delta state and still retain their Yoruba identity. But have been massively influenced by the Ibo speaking group in that environment.

Does it mean they are ibos ? Ofcourse not because their history stated this, so also their language, despite the fact that their language has some form switch from Yoruba language to Ibos at times to converse with dominant language in that environment.

It is pertinent to assert here that Olukumi or Olukwumi are a Yoruba group but being influenced by Ibo speaking people through intermarriages and economic factors. This is the point I am making.

ChebeNdigboCalm:
Firstly misconception about Igala. Igala was not only created with Yoruba influence. But also with Igbo influence and literally have themselves been founded by the sons of Eri. Next Nsukka people are still mostly Igbo, there is Igala in Nsukka but the vast majority is still Igbo, maybe a few communities are considered Igala and that’s fine but the evidence is concrete.

Ogba people’s leader has always been called Eze Ogba and only a few years ago was CHANGED to Oba by the current Eze Ogba. How is this proof of Benin origin. The fact is there is not proof of Benin origin. Even if one Bini ancestor dropped themselves off in Ogba. You cannot genuinely point to anything else. Apart from of course the Ikwerre Akalaka myth that claims his sons were Ogba, Iwhuruohna and Ekpeye. A myth created in the late 20th century and the title change occurring a few decades later.

You people can argue that Ogba should be called whatever they want. I am fine with that, as long as it is acknowledged that from an academia standpoint it is most likely untrue. Because that is the fact.
I have thrown light on Igala as it relates Yoruba-Tapa intermarriages that brought Igala as hybrid before the Ibo fusion.So, there is no need to overflog this issue.

Sincerely, there is no need to drag people's historicity with them. In as much as the Ogba sub group claim Bini linkage, then it is best, you people let them be.

This case is much like if Yoruba people claiming the whole Edo land, instead of Bini .This will result to falsification of history because people lived in that environment withtheirdistinct identities before Yoruba descendants emerged in Igodomigodo land as the new ruler through fusion of Yoruba prince-king, who later became Ooni at ileife.

Even if there are Ibo influence in Ogba kingdom,the fact remain Ogba people identified themselves with Bini land.

So, kini is now the problem?

Ogbogu people call yam iji. Igbos call yam ji
Ogbogu people call fowl nnunu. Igbos call fowl okuko. Igbos call birds nnunu

Ogbogu people call witches mgbashi. Nsukka people call witches mgbashi

Ogbogu people greet kando. They reply Okorobia and Eze nwaanyi depending on whether the person is male or female.

Okorobia and Ezenwaanyi are igbo words.

Ogba people bear Igbo names. Even their "oba" is not exempted.

Dont tell me any nonsense about origin. Nsukka people originated from Kogi state. Did that make them Igallas?
They are still Igbos.
Names may not necessarily make people a particular ethnic grouping as you have stated but monarchial tittle or more aptly the community history do have.

The fact that Ogba people bear Igbo names does not necessarily mean, they are Igbos because at every point in time in history, when a people migrate to a new place and get in contact with other ethnic group, the newer group can switch her language between the new host community for economic reason or the host community language's dominant factoring.

The Nsukka people have Igala ancestry, and this has nothing to do with political reason. These people are infact, acestrally a hybrid of Yoruba-Tapa before infusion with Ibo elements.

The Igalas in Nsukka celebrated five hundred years of migration to Nsukka, few years ago. So, Igalas in Nsukka are not Ibos even if their language have infused both Igala's (Yoruboid language) language and Igbo's.

It is pertinent to useOgu (Egun) also here with a lot of strong relationship with Yorubas.

The Egun are a people who were brought to Lagos's badagry from Benin Republic over three hundred years ago. The place had sparing settlement of Yorubas in around the area but Badagry had Egun people and Yoruba people arrived in the land around late 1720s who were Popo (Yorubas) refugees and Egun's from the wars with the Fon people of Dahomey. Infact Ọlọ́yọ́ (Alaafin) settled them in that land since the time of their arrival as refugees in SouthWest Yoruba land.

As at today, the Yoruba people among the Egu speaks Egu language and Yoruba's. In the same vein, Egu people speak both Yoruba language and Egu's.So also both bear Yoruba names and Egu names. However, each families do know how they are related to both Yoruba and Egu.

In a nutshell, Ogba people may not be Igbos even if they speak Igbo language because we cannot neglect people's history as laid down by their forebear. Obi as a name exist with ambiguous in Yoruba language as having one of the meaning as "parent."

Oba as a title of a king in Ogba land shows that there is a clear relationship between the Ogba people in River state with Bini or Yoruba monarchial title.

This is a lower rank leader or one given authority to act on behalf of Ọbá. Dele Giwa's father was a servant in the palace of Ooni Ife,which was the connection he had with Ileife.

The generation who intertwined with the people of Bini were Oranmiyan, the son of Ogun,who incidentally was a descendant of Oduduwa.

Therefore null this notion about Oduduwa. The king who was on the throne during the era of Oranmiyan was Obalufon Ogbogbodirin(orator king who later at old age turned to iron).

Infact, what you just posited reminded of a peculiar animal which the English calls "deer" and Igala Yoruba language.

Therefore Yoruba people had never identified themselves as "Igala people" at anytime in the past. While you may want to use linguistic comparison to assert your view but still with a lot of shortcoming.

Good to learn so much, the house that the python is peculiar with among the Awori is the ojugbele, a popular family at Ota. I've not been privileged to know of others, but the mention is made in oriki Awori.

Another possibility is here is built around ogunfunminire. He's the Awori icon from iseri. The truth of the matter has decayed into tradition. But every oral tradition keeps incredible details.

Tradition said ogunfunminire transforms to python whenever he wants to hunt. I think this is an ancient hunters' folklore in Yoruba that are often adopted and redeveloped by those who venerates the python.

It's the same recollection rendered differently as a result of variation of time and space just as much as the imaginations could enable each narrator.
The snake myth and the association with Yorubas went as far as with the pantheon of orients.

Infact,Ogunfunminire wasnt the myth with Awori because,the house of Yoruba at ile ife are knowledgeable on the snake veneration.

The tradition transcends Ogunfunminire time frame in Yorubaland whose name was used for Odo Ogun(Ogun river) as a contraction of Ogunfunminire.

Snake is common totem shared with the Awori: "omo agbo d'ere".

It's not a construction of this people.

Each has a narrative of how it comes to become a totem in their oral tradition.
Not only with Awori but with all Ilé Ogún and other founding houses such as Ilé Omirin,Ilé Ugbo and Ilé Odikéjì,which established the thirteen Yoruba groupings in Iléifẹ.

This is the basis for the name Ọlọ́tá amongst Yorubas due to association with snake which is often python as a specie.

So, these people are properly in all Yoruba founding homes,which starts with two and followed with four group, which later thirteen and ultimately multiply to sixteen as maximum.

Among the thirteen hamlet, the house of Ogun often lords over others as the chosen king,being the house that owns Arẹ Crown. This does not mean they are not all interrelated , even though they all are interrelated. Oriki is so explanatory that it links everyone to its ancestors panegyric.

Let quickly state here that many Ekiti sub group cum clan are maternally linked to Odua and paternally linked to Oramfe and Obatala and also in reverse in some cases.

And as I had informed before now that, I had a spell in Benin Republic as a Teacher in a french&English American School, which are associated with United Sate of America and her curriculum.

Infact, Diplomats or Envoys andambassadors wards attended these schools to be bilingue en; Anglais et Français . The African's French speaking Countries do not always travel to English countries in the West, except Canada which is multilingual but often regarded as both English and French speakers country which made the USA, considered these people.

So, I do know what I am posting here as a fact finding information, which also gave me opportunity to interact with lecturers in Abomey Calavi Université et C.E.B.L.A, which I attended for a diploma program.

It's also correct to assert here that in Republic of Benin,indigenous people do not always shy away from truth as opposed in Nigeria.Therefore, whatever I post here is not based on assumption but interactive session with people who I had contact with for a relative period of time.

Albeit on the snake veneration is a fact and I am reechoing it again here that Ọtá is a relative term use for snake which often is python or its close family.

The worship or properly the veneration is done at a given time in a year and the venerators are titled Ọlọ́tá,which remains as a chieftaincy in Yorùbá land.

Let me reemphasise here that some scholars often try to hurriedly conclude and give some certain interpretation to some words in Yoruba land which is often a modern form of interpretation whichis also misleading and disorderly. Words such as :
enu is originally eru =mouth
Ihare/ahare=elders
ereko=farm on the other side of the land
Eremi = across of the river
bá with multiple meaning =bow
t'eri= bow your head
eri=seer "lord"
ajo= journey
irin= journey,walk
La=walk
okuta= site of stone
ọtá = stone
sì=is
ibi=evil
ajogun=adversaries
Shote=antagonist
Shota=antagonist /enemy
shela= successful
Sala=toil to be successful etc

Too many to mention but this does not negate the continuum of Yoruba language with its diversional newer input. The point I am making is that, Yoruba do not give a damn if they loose sight of their history even if they become subdued by another group of people which often give room for assimilation.

Finally, history is a way of life for Yoruba people beceause it give detail of their ancestry from the source wherever they are or may be in the future.

hayoholla:
I don't think ouidah, whydah and Judah has any inherent connection. It was just a corruption or play on words by the explorers. Originally, ouidah means house of snakes. The kingdom of judah you see on the map was a construction of a British cartographer Emmanuel Bowen, he named it Judah for easy pronunciation. Even maps after that did not include Judah, because the kingdom of weda was conquered by the kingdom of dahomey. Weda was corrupted to ouidah, then to whydah then Judah. The weda people worship a snake god called dangbe, which runs parallel to the god which Judah worshipped.
You are correct about the fact that Odéayé/Ouidah/Whyday is said to be a place where snake was found. Although oral history from the land of Odéayé/Ouidah/Whydah stated their historical setups.

The snake meaning of Odéayé/Ouidah/Whyday has no basis in Yoruba language,but a fabrication of Fongbe when snakes were heavily seen in that area bythe new comers who were not the founder of the place.

More accurately, the Yorubas founded that land and named it Odéayé which was later wrongly called by Fongbe as Ouidah as a corrupt version pronounced. The Fongbe chased away Yoruba from that land when chaotic situation happened between Yoruba these two different people when war ravaged Yorubaland from late 1700s

Even at this, you will find some people in Ouidah/Whyday today who have Yoruba ancestry. And they do not shy away from their connection to Yoruba bloodline.

So,Judah being coined by English people to match Hebrew man's name who also was one of their ancestor has no connection with Ouidah and meaningless in this regard. Beside there is no name as Judah among the ancient Hebrew because what was once transliterated andtranslated as "J" is incorrect and misleading because the classics ideogram that are translated from Yud+Waw+ Dalet+Hey
Yud= "y","ee" ,"ii"
Waw="y","u","o"
Dalet= "d"
Hey= "h" and when it is used as last word it becomes "ah"

As you can see there is no way that name Judah existed in the first but fusion of Western world. Afterall, what the ideograms interpreters actually did was try and error even though they are highly close to identifying the original speakers of the language they claimed is dead and isolate language in scholarly world.

Ibini is not Whydah in all ramification. Whyday is an English version of Ouidah in Benin Republic.

The people who inhabited and founded this place were Yoruba people of Ketu extraction. The "word" Whydah was also a corrupt word for Odéayé by Fongbe people who speaks Fon Language.

The Fongbe history has distinct history and spoken language differs from Igodomigodo people A.K.A Bini, with her settlement which are found at Bini in Nigeria before migration to other places.

The Fongbe remains as the largest ethnic group in Republic of Benin with her language strongly held high even if Yoruba language is adored and accepted as second official language due to historical reason such as conquest, population,reliogion of Ifa, monarchial system and wealth of got from farming and metal production.

Almost all Edoid groups make use of that name. I have also met many eastern yoruboid group with the name, but just like Itsekiri, the likes of Ikale and ilaje were also greatly influenced by Bini.

Edema is also an household name in Ijebu. Maybe one group borrowed from the other.

I asked a question about where the name Ogedegbe originated from some time ago and till date, I still couldn't get an appropriate answer. It's a famous name among my Edoid family and also a famous name in western Nigeria.

Then probably, the name Edema has different meaning to the two groups, in itsekiri, it means Gentleman and you just said it means things are good in Edoid.

Edema used by the Itsekiri might be the same used by other Yoruba subgroups. My only issue with Nigerians is that they believe it's impossible for them to be influenced by minor group.

Example, I was educating some people on this forum about how Okoro was a lost Edoid word and you need to see how I was devoured. The only reason they attacked me was because of Ego, in their mind how dare us majority get influenced by a tiny group. Lol
Well,let me clearly state here that "ogedengbe" ogede-ngbe/ogede-on-gbe/ogede-gbe as a Yoruba name is derived from Ogede (form of incantation - which aids the bearer) may have other ethnic group people using it with its distinct meaning.

While I will posit here that Edoid had been influence by Yoruba people via interaction that solemnly begun linguistically from the time of Oranmiyan's and group's arrival in Igodomigodo which makes it easier for linguistic interaction which is factored under language ecology;teacher language and learner's language.

More aptly,Yoruba language is encoded in Ifaodu which has shaped these people's worldview linguistically that has been the means of communication for unknown period among the ancient Yoruba even till tomorrow.The Yoruba lfa has religion in it with its intricacies so much as it stand affront any other religion in the world.

Your narratives is a bit twisted

The story of the exiled Benin Prince Ekaladerhan, who settled in an area of the geographical area of Yoruba land, starting the Oba kingship is more believable.

Ekaladerhan gave birth to who the Yorubas call Oranmiyan. This is more believable than the story of mythical Oduduwa falling from the sky, whose son is Oranmiyan, giving birth via a Benin woman to bore the first Oba, how can a people already with a set of kingship and family members in line for the throne, just allow an outsider, come become their king?

All accounts by Yoruba historians stated that Oduduwa came from the East, and Benin sits on the East of Yoruba, looking at the map, all Yoruba historians agree that Oduduwa just appeared, was never born in Yoruba land...

Erelu Dosunmu and Oba of Lagos confirmed that they are ancestrally Benin.

One Question...was Oduduwa Yoruba?
Did you believe the myth that Oduduwa came from the Sky?

I will rather believe the Benin exiled Prince is Oduduwa narrative.

Benin (Beny) is a Portuguese name after which was named the Bight of Benin in view of its political, economic influence and value by the Portuguese on trade missions.

(Papiva da Beny) which in Portuguese meant broad road of the city of Benin.

Papiva was corrupted to Akpakpava, the road that once housed the Catholic Cathedral established in the 15th century, now known as Aruosa Church where the Oba occasionally worships.
Did this Ekarlederan has two lived in both Ughotton and Ileife grin cheesy grin?

Contrary to your assumption , oduduwa was not the father of Oranmiyan. Infact, Oba-lufon ogbogboodirin was the Olufe in11thcentury during Oranmiyan espionage and partial conquestest of Biniland Igodomigodo from Ileiefe.
The same 11th century was when Ekarleradan lived to found Ughotton

This is the reason Oba Bini does not have original beaded crown from ileife. The orient sword called Agada is the power he uses as a symbol of son of Oranmiyan from Ileife.

Infact Agada sword belonged to the house of oduduwa and also coopted cum assimiliated family to use it, which started after Oranmiyan return to Ileife to become ooni. grin cheesy angry cheesy. This is the sword given to oduduwa descendant princes to establish new kingdoms.

Edos trying so hard from time immemorial to erase glaring historical fact with absolute failure on their part.

Yet you always call Awolowo who is Ijebu a Yoruba man

Oduduwa United the different Aborigines groups into one Yoruba Nation

The Awujale of Ijebu was an Ilari sent from Oyo by an Alaafin to Settle a Land dispute
Yorubas are both Aborigines and Settlers and both groups have Long become the same people

Ijebu, Owu, Ijesha Ekiti,Ilaje,Akoko were all Ugbo aborigines now all are the same Yorubas

Just as the English were originally from Viking,Angles,Saxons,French,Roman Origin but now all are English

Bottomline is Ooni of Ife is the Father of the Present Yoruba Kings include the Oba of Benin and Alaafin

Not aboriginal settlement of different stocks but rather the settlement of people who were related by intermarriages as well harmonising the genealogical bloodline ,which all belonged.

Secondly, let me posit here that pioneer Awujale was frankly not an ilari from Oyo. Such as this statement is not correct ,my dear brother. Awujale pioneer ancestors came from Ileife.

From the 1937 Conference

The first Yoruba Chiefs Conference was held in the Alaafins Palace Hall in 1937

And all the Oba's were happy with it
including the Oba of Benin

The Conference was later expanded to include all other Ethnic Groups but it was Originally for the Yoruba Chiefs and they all agreed that Oni was definitely their leader

Let us not divert from the Original request for Evidence that Oni of Ife was their Traditional Leader
of Yoruba Chiefs

From the Yorubas Obas conference 1937 proceedings
Hosted by Sir Bernard Boudillon Governor General of Nigeria
on 31st March and 1st April 1937

Quoting last paragraph of first page:

“The Chiefs were seated in a horse-shoe formation, with the Oni of Ife ,as the head of the town from which all Yorubas have traditionally sprung , at the centre ,and the Alaafin of Oyo at the western and the oba of Benin at the eastern end, an arrangement which gave general satisfaction.”

The fact that Scammers are trying to rewrite History doesn't mean everybody is like that
Kudos.

Èṣù is never Devil.This is total denigration of the ancient name Yoruba ancestors and descendants bears from time immemorial.

May our creator, Ẹlẹ́dá forgives Rev. Samuel Ajai Crowther in this misinformation and misinterpretation. Aṣẹ́ wàa
