A complete waste of time, intended to distract from real problems by giving the frustrated and bigoted an outlet to vent their misplaced anger on. Are crossdressers to blame for Nigeria's runaway inflation, rampant insecurity, ubiquitous corruption and economic stagnation? Sure, let's waste time checking who is hiding what genitals under their clothes, instead of tending to raging hunger, kidnapping, theft, no electricity, lack of running water, perpetually closed universities and so many other problems!

The worst thing about this ridiculous charade is that it will almost certainly work, going by the number of approving comments one can already see right here.

The mindless homicide is disgusting. It's like Floyd but this time, with an Italian taste.

The senseless crowd should have developed some guts and done something. They were probably terrified themselves, not knowing what the killer was capable of doing to them. Would they have folded their hands if it was a black guy fatally manhandling in broad daylights a white guy?
I think your last sentence gets to the bottom of the issue: it wasn't fear that held them back, it was racist indifference. There's a reason why Italy's next government is likely to be led by extreme right-wing nationalist parties - fear and loathing of Africans coming over the Mediterranean in boats. To such people, the murderer probably seemed like a hero.
Politics › Re: Peter Obi: The Acclaimed "Messiah" Without The Credentials by omohayek: 12:21pm On Aug 03, 2022
It's telling that nearly all of the responses to the OP's post have consisted of personal insults or accusations of being in the pay of the PDP, with not even a pretence at trying to refute any the accusations leveled against Saint Peter Obi, the promised messiah. Obi supporters simply can't help but reveal their intellectual vacuity, egocentricity, intolerance of dissent and tribalistic chauvinism whenever faced with the slightest opposition - the very same characteristics displayed by all the "Biafra or Death" chanting Nnamdi Kanu supporters who littered this forum until very recently adopting radio silence upon the rise of their new "Chosen One", Peter Obi. Why does it matter whether TonyeBarcanista is a diehard PDP supporter or not, if the accusations he makes are true? Even if he were being paid directly by Atiku himself in bundles of cash, how would that invalidate anything he has said?

What it all comes down is that there is no substance at all behind all the "Obidient" hype: it is simply the latest manifestation of the same tribalistic sentiment which saw so many Igbos demanding that the APC and PDP cede their presidential candidacies to an Igbo man on the basis of "fairness, equity and justice", as if the presidency of Nigeria were a tribal reward to be served out on a "turn by turn" basis, rather than a position of duty towards all Nigerians. Peter Obi's candidacy is simply the current vehicle for that sense of tribal entitlement, with nothing to recommend it above that of Atiku or Tinubu outside of that narrow lens - Obi brings no ideas to the table, just glaring lies and meaningless generalities, Obi has very little in the way of past achievements to speak of, Obi has jumped between even more parties than Atiku and Tinubu, and Obi has been directly implicated in breaking Nigerian laws in a way neither Atiku nor Tinubu have. How then is such a man being portrayed as some model of visionary thinking and moral rectitude? How is it that the same people who point to a bullion van entering a private person's house as supposedly glaring evidence of corruption, have no shame in pretending it is acceptable for a sitting governor to be caught transporting N250 million of public money in his convoy?

If this were a Moghalu candidacy we were talking about, one might understand the excitement, but it isn't. Peter Obi is simply another crooked, mediocre Nigerian politician without an ounce of principle or any core beliefs other than personal advancement, and his fanatical supporters don't care because this too is, for them, merely about getting "their person" into Aso Rock, not about any universal principles. That's why they are so quick to resort to insults and threats to silence anyone who might pop the bubble of manufactured hype around their false messiah - they recognize that they can't defend him merely with the tools of reason and factual evidence.

And here you are illustrating the very evil Abati was criticising - you have no ideas to offer, no criticisms of any policy proposals, nothing but the same tiresome spamming of unflattering pictures of a candidate, as if the presidency of Nigeria were a competition for Mr Universe or GQ model of the year. Nigeria's politics is devoid of ideas precisely because millions of Nigerians are like you in having nothing going on upstairs.

Atiku is a fraud. I mean, a huge fraud.

In the case of Tinubu, the Muslim - Muslim ticket is highly insensitive and disrespectful and that will finish him.

As a Yoruba and a sane Nigerian, the only viable option now is Peter Obi to be honest.

Sowowe is very knowledgeable and bold but he is not mature at all and will not get there.

Osibanjo would have been APC's best chance is Tinubu, APC cabal and Buhari backs him.

Others candidates are jokers.
In a thread about specific policies, all you have to offer is the same old tribalistic nonsense, when it's clear that the candidate you favor is precisely the one who has the least to offer in terms of track record or concrete policy recommendations. I bet you're about as "Yoruba" as I am a Zeta Reticulan.

If the Pandora tax evasion was an issue, the British would have been the ones to have queried Obi because it falls under their jurisdictions, not even your country Nigeria. That's why your country is not making a fuse about it, and neither the British because what he did was still within the cover of the law. The only grouse Nigeria could have with Obi is about not highlighting that he owns offshore assets in his asset declaration, and not thus because those assets were acquired fraudulently.
To begin with, what's this "your country" rubbish? Aren't you a Nigerian? And if you aren't, why should I give a damn about your opinion in any case? Go make pathetic excuses for the crooks in your own country - whatever that may be - rather than bothering me for caring about my own.

As for the rest of your ridiculous excuse for an argument, why on earth would it be the British government's job to prosecute a Nigerian politician for breaking Nigerian laws? As if the entire point of the British Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Jersey and other such offshore jurisdictions wasn't to allow British lawyers and bankers to profit off the desire of crooked foreigners to hide their ill-gotten gains ...

All you've managed to establish is that a Peter Obi supporter who is able to reason clearly and has even a rudimentary understanding of how international law operates is about as likely a prospect as finding a hen with teeth (i.e. practically impossible). No one with an IQ above 100 who isn't already an Igbo chauvinist would ever mistake Peter Obi for more than just another Nigerian crook-politician, in the exact same mold as Atiku and Tinubu except that he's been the least successful of the three to date. He offers absolutely nothing new except the chance for Igbos to feel they finally have a champion of their own to battle the Tinubu they so passionately hate, and for a few delusional non-Igbo "youths" to believe that "change" can be brought on a platter to them, despite the clearcut, overwhelming evidence that Nigerian politics is inherently corrupt, and therefore cannot be changed by anyone who has spent over a decade being part of the crooked system.

COMPAQ:
As far as I'm concerned all this talk of being sold to cronies and incompetent people is mostly beer parlour gist. Any proper student of economics and business will know that there is a lot of difference between the telecoms sector and power sector.

Telecoms companies were given free hand to set their prices, electricity companies were not.

Telecom tarrifs have always been cost reflective, electricity tarrif have not been.

By the nature of telecoms (a virtual product), you cannot steal it or avoid paying for it. Electricity is often consumed without paying or outright stolen.

The marginal cost of providing telecoms service to extra 10,000 people once the infrastructure was rolled out is pretty much zero. To supply electricity to new 10,000 people will always require new infrastructure (poles, wires, transformers, more generation etc). Hence why the tariffs needs to be cost reflective.

Telecoms are not burdened by any middle man. Mtn sells directly to customers. Electricity is burdened by Too many players. GENCO, DISCO, TCN, NBET, GAS COMPANIES, etc and can only be as strong as its weakest link.

Besides NNPC has not been sold, so what are you talking about? Hence my beer parlour gist!! Too many people are uninformed in Nigeria about how things really work, yet we all feel we are well educated. Hence why so many people cannot be employed by multinational companies.
Thank you for adding substance to what has been a content-free discussion until now. Most Nigerians seem utterly incapable of addressing issues in terms of facts and logic, preferring to resort to conspiracy-mongering, personalization of issues and the seeking out of scapegoats for what are ultimately systemic problems.

Nigerian politicians recognize all too well that most Nigerians would rather products and services be "free" than that they actually be any good, which is why the price of petrol and electricity are both capped below levels that would attract sustainable investment. Any efforts to explain this to the ignorant masses is either ignored or smeared as "evidence" that the explainer must be a stooge for some imaginary "cabal" which is to blame for the inevitable outcome.

The average Nairalander must have an IQ of 80 or less, so dumb are most of the comments on here. The importance of this ruling is that it sets a clear precedent for the next attempt by a Nigerian government to restrict freedom of speech, and in particular, it takes away from Buhari the power to threaten Twitter for failing to muzzle any new criticism (a threat Lai Muhammed was still making only recently).

A classic Obi-fanatic tactic: knocking down straw-men you've erected yourself. You miss the point entirely if you think it's my job to prove anything to you, when I am the one who happens to be the undecided voter in need of convincing.

he is not there to give Nigerians thesis presentation as if leadership is a controlled experiment where data are often reproducible.
Yes, I know how unreasonable it is to expect Obi to give concrete answers of the sort the oft-criticised Atiku already managed to provide not so long ago

https://www.nairaland.com/7170139/atiku-releases-economic-agenda-vows

let alone providing a manifesto of the like both of Britain's parties did in 2019

https://www.conservatives.com/our-plan

https://labour.org.uk/manifesto-2019/

or the US Democratic Party did in 2020

https://democrats.org/where-we-stand/party-platform/

But I guess those parties have no clue what they are doing providing the kind of "thesis presentation" you consider unreasonable to request of Saint Peter Obi (blessed be his name), who no one dare ask for clearcut statements on any policy questions.

give us a fragment of Ur presentation on railway roadmap alone, let see how good u are.
More inanity based on the assumption that it's my job to sell my views to you and your candidate, rather than yours to convince me he's any better than the others (for which I've yet to see even the slightest bit of evidence). I could care less what you believe one way or the other, what matters to me is which candidate says most clearly and convincingly what he plans to do to accelerate Nigeria's GDP growth (and how he intends to pay for it), a point on which Obi currently falls dead last with his waffling and attempts to pass off statements of the obvious as profundities.

How you want to run for presidency in 7 months and appear on national TV without a coherent plan or at the very least a clear position in principle on the burning issues is befuddling. Even I who is not running can reel out what I will do if I assumed power tomorrow because for years, I think all the time of Nigeria's problems and solutions, I can tell you how many Km of roads in what period and how many jobs will be created by associated industries as a result of huge road projects, quarry, agriculture timber etc which industries i want to revive how they interconnect, How I have a rail plan but All the steel used must come from the Nigerian steel industry, so we must revive steel plants as a matter of priority. How i intend to remove subsidy amongst other avenues to fund these projects, my plan to revive universities and make the top tier Universities fee paying to stop the forex we spend every year to send our children abroad and give schorlarships if and when required to qualifying students etc etc. A presidential candidate should be able to come on Tv and say things like these 7 months to an election!!!!! The days of "The Platform" are over, nobody is interested in wikipedia statistics, people want to know decisively what your plans are!
Exactly! I couldn't have put it better myself. Anyone who is serious about fixing Nigeria's problems will have devoted many years to thinking about possible solutions, which will be immediately available at hand upon any questioning. There won't be any need to trek to Egypt to do "research" on something as glaring as Nigeria's electricity problems (as if Egypt were any sort of role model to begin with).

You are not on TV to sell yourself to your supporters, you are on TV to convince the skeptics, your supporters are already in the bag. You dont convince skeptics when you appear on national TV without a plan skeptics have no emotional connection to you so they see through BS unlike supporters.
This is what so many of Obi's apologists on here seem incapable of understanding. Instead of trying to win over the undecided by marshalling verifiable facts and well-reasoned arguments, they resort to transparent fabrications, loud assertions of empty slogans, insults, threats, etc., as if anyone was ever won over by being cursed at and accused of being a "Tinubu urchin" [sic].
He clearly hadnt anticipated the questions and prepared himself for the possible questions, which shows, not only are you unprepared but you dont have people around you who are prepared and can prep you for interviews. Again just like his decisions making vis PDP,NNPP, all he ends up doing is show a man who doesnt think things through but relies on blagging his way through.
Here I blame Nigeria's pathetic excuses for "journalists" at least as much as I blame Obi. Hardly any Nigerian "journalists" know how to ask tough questions, let alone how to follow them up when politicians try to evade by giving non-answers or changing the topic. Of course, ultimately the Nigerian masses are to blame for not demanding more of the "news" outlets they consume, and not insisting all serious candidates submit to properly structured debates. Tribal and religious sympathies are allowed to overrule close scrutiny, leading to absurdities where candidates like Buhari and Obi can ride to popularity on the back of empty phrases like "change", "hope" and "youth".

Nigeria might have been spared 8 years of needless hardship if Buhari had been forced to reveal his intellectual vacuity under questioning from challengers, but his blind supporters allowed him to get away with chickening out of debates, a mistake Atiku failed to capitalise on when he too refused to participate. What could have been easier than defeating an incumbent with a record of 4 years of failure who refuses to even show up? And yet here we are with the Obi worshippers insisting on repeating the same mistakes Buhari's deluded "talakawas" did then.

BTW tinubu has stated clearly he will introduce state police, he and Atiku have both stated they will restructure Nigeria. So stop this bullshit of no one can state clearly. the man who cannot state clealry is the man who has no plan!!!

The reason we are where we are today is that People did not ask the right questions and put Buhari and his antecedents up to scrutiny in 2015. I am old enough to have been around when he was head of state in 1984, he was a monumental failure then and i said it in 2015. But people were so despearte for change they didnt examine the man and his record properly. the same thing is happening now, ibos and naive youth are so desperate for change they are not seeing through the BS in peter Obi. The good thing as a Nigerian is that he has no hope in hell of winning.
You have put the crux of the matter beautifully in the emphasized passage above. I can understand young people feeling fed up with seeing the same old faces running again and again, but what's the point of bringing in a new face if it turns out to be even worse than the old one? This mindset of wanting change for change's sake - never mind the specifics - is what brought about disasters like Trump's presidency, Brexit, or the eloquent law professor in Tunisia who was swept into power as a "man of the people" and promptly revealed himself as a dictator.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kais_Saied

Peter Obi's unwillingness to commit himself to any clearcut positions on issues hardly makes him out as a "breath of fresh air" who will tackle established interests, even leaving aside all the shady dealings in his political career that are currently being glossed over by his supporters. Obi is afraid - rightfully I believe - that as soon as he starts taking clear positions, his followers will no longer be able to treat him as a blank slate upon which they can project any of their own fantasies. But if he's so afraid of alienating supporters now, how will he find the courage to do so when in office, at which point real-world consequences will be at stake, not just mere daydreams?

This fuss about original certificate is so archaic I can't believe any productive person can make it an issue.
Agreed. The whole obsession with primary and secondary certificates that are more than 40 years old is as bizarre as it is ridiculous. Who cares how well some candidate might have done on an exam so long ago? What should matter is what the candidate intends to do today, what the candidate did while in public office, how well that tenure matched up to what was promised before getting the job, and how compatible those prior promises are with the ones currently being made.

Whether a candidate currently claiming to be a socialist was pretending to be a free-market libertarian just 4 years ago matters far more than the grade he managed in WAEC chemistry in 1975. Having a PhD should count for nothing if a candidate is promising to make 2 + 2 = 5 by expanding public services while cutting taxes and borrowing. No sensible person should care what a candidate's secondary school grade in geography was if the same candidate is currently refusing to consider local (NOT state) policing. These are the sorts of issues that will make a tangible difference in people's lives, but instead of seeking answers for them we busy ourselves with this tripe, like market women gossiping about celebrity quarrels.

In addition, the reason I mentioned my Ivy League degree is that I have it but can't produce my primary school certificate, and can't understand why any sane person would expect that earlier document to be of any relevance given that I have a university degree which is recognized worldwide. Who cares where I went to primary school and how I did there?

Tinubu's certificate controversy did not start today. In fact it started the year he became governor. After he left government office someone tried to revive the certificate controversy, but was shut down by the Lagos High Court. Even though the murmurs about Tinubu's certificate down down, it did not completely ho away. Now that Tinubu has clinched the ticket of APC and on the cusp of becoming president, are you surprised that the certificate controversy are heating up again? If Tinubu has nothing to hide, why has he laid the controversy to rest for over 20 years. He still has between now and the elections proper to present the results and show people he is expecting their votes that he actually obtained the controversial certificates.
That's fine, but it isn't what is at issue here (at least for me), which is the relevance of his primary and secondary school certificates if he can produce a Bachelors degree from an accredited American university. If the point of asking for such documentation is to verify that a candidate is well-educated enough to be president, then a BSc is more than sufficient, and fussing over primary and secondary school certs is merely empty nit-picking.

I have never referred as a drug baron. I am matured enough to to accuse people based on hearsay without concrete evidence. If this thread was about Tinubu's drug past, you will not see me commenting.
Did you read carefully what I wrote? I already said you didn't, so why are you denying it again? What I said is that you've put yourself in the company of the same tribalistic liars who have made such accusations, and are even now peddling new ones as we speak, calling him "Yekini Amoda Ogunlere", just as they were calling Buhari "Jubril Al Sudani". You should be asking yourself if you're on the right path when you find yourself in such company.

Comparing Tinubu's certificate controversy to Obama's birther controversy is disingenuous. Obama birther controversy was quickly shut down by Obama showing his birth certificate and hospital records showing he was actually born in the US. Even his main antagonist Donald Trump accepted and place the blame on Democrats. He said it was Democrats that first raises the issue, that he simply played along. Tinubu meanwhile has used every legal loophole to prevent people demanding and seeing the certificates.
There's nothing disingenuous about the comparison. The question is why Obama should have had to show his birth certificate in the first place, when no other candidate in American history has ever been asked to do so. That he voluntarily chose to play along was his choice, but Trump had no business asking in the first place, and the motivation behind his doing so was primarily racism, just as the motivation behind all the noise about first Buhari's certificate, and now Tinubu's, is primarily tribalism.

If the point you claim to be making is that Tinubu has engaged in dishonesty of some sort, why harp on something this trivial and petty, rather than issues like his relationship to Alpha-Beta, the overly generous retirement benefits he handed himself and his successors, etc. Those are real problems that are worth discussing, but you prefer to expend your energy on a triviality whose only net result will be to breed sympathy for Tinubu amongst Yorubas who might otherwise have been wavering, just as the "WAEC certificate" rubbish did for Buhari with northerners, for the simple reason that both parties can see the true motivation behind this particularly unfair line of attack as borne of tribalistic hatred, pure and simple.

If you gained admission into a university with fake documentation and graduated with a First Class, the First Class certificate will be invalidated even if it was your 100 percent sweat.
Sure, whatever helps you sleep at night. As if a certificate were anything other than evidence that a student had learned enough to meet the requirements for a degree ...

Are you are telling me that obtaining a Primary and secondary school certificate by fraudulent means is not a crime?
I'm saying being unable to produce them on demand is neither a crime, nor of the slightest relevance in assessing a candidate's eligibility for the presidency. I couldn't produce a primary school certificate if asked for one at this time, as I graduated several decades ago, and the small school I went to has since shut down with the death of its owner. Does that make me somehow a criminal? Does it invalidate my Ivy League degree?

If I were working for Atiku or Obi, and wanted to discredit Tinubu, there are far more promising, legitimate avenues I could pursue. All I see with this school certificate thing is a Nigerian version of the "Obama birth certificate" faux-controversy, a cheap attack that allows for the expression of a dislike for a politician without admitting that said dislike is driven by base prejudice. In this case, said suspicion is further boosted by the fact that most of those pushing the story (not you) are the same ones who are certain that Tinubu is a drug baron (without any evidence other than a doctored JPEG) and who insist Peter Obi is a saint, even after he was caught setting up offshore accounts while in his second term as a governor.

He could have gained admission with fake certificates, he could have bought someone’s certificate and changed his identity to reflect the one on the certificate , he could have bought the degree certificate. Before the computerisation of results and certificates, impostors and certificate fraud was very common.
Even if he were guilty of all of those things, none of them would invalid the evidence that he studied at, and graduated from Chicago State University through his own efforts. As such, insisting on his primary and secondary certificates is utterly besides the point.

A sophisticated M0ron you are.
Look at this Dunning-Kruger example, so proud of himself for being able to type a few coherent words into his Tecno phone. Go back to fighting with the cockroaches in your "face me I slap you" hovel, and leave the reasoned arguments to the adults.
