Stop comparing sleep with death.
Landlocked countries in Africa dont thrive
Just too many examples: Mali, Sudan, Zaire

And like eku_Bear articulated above, they just wont be able to compete.
Sudan is NOT landlocked, yet terrible. Zaire is not really landlocked.
You ignored a typical African country which Biafra or Igboland will LIKELY be similar to -90% Christian- BOTSWANA.

And I am taking the basest view. Igboland will not be landlocked in any case. Again, I am convince that our immediate minority neighbors will become more realistic once oil wells dry up.

These are two separate issues, though. If Nigeria breaks up, I think we Yoruba will be fine. But that doesn't mean that this is the best of all outcomes. The best of all outcomes imo is political mastery over our region, aggressively using our federal allocations to build up our territory, and then proceeding from there. Just because Situation A is good doesn't mean you'll agitate for it if Situation B is better. And it is starting to appear that we will be able to achieve Situation B by simply kicking the PDP out of the Southwest and installed good leaders like Fashola in our land.

Regarding the Igbo and how they'd vote . . . personally, me if I were Igbo, I wouldn't be interested in leaving. Being a landlocked country kind of sucks. It is really hard for me to think of any nations on earth without access to the sea which are doing well. Not to mention issues like erosion, a lot of your wealth being outside of your territory. . .

Anyway, to each his own, you guys do what you think best for your people.
As you know, Switzerland is landlocked and still more successful than Somalia with one of the longest sea coasts in Africa. Even Botswana is landlocked but still more stable and richer than Somalia.

As for our wealth outside Igboland, they can be repatriated one way or the other. The only thing is that property values will skyrocket in Igboland but collapse in Lagos and other areas.

With our "can do" spirit -which is worth more than gold- we are unstoppable.

I think we already know who wants to stay in Nigeria, right? Those without oil, those who would be landlocked. Fortunately for my people, we have both oil and access to the sea. Oil isn't much, but it is good enough to fund other industries.

And of course, we have the wonderful city/metropolis of Lagos. This is our ace card. I feel pretty good about our future if (when?) Nigeria separates.

EDIT: typos
Why do you like lying to yourself?
Put up a poll here and ask your Yoruba folks to vote about staying in Nigeria or leaving and I guarantee you will get at least 85% wanting to stay.
Do the same thing and ask Igbos and you will get the OPPOSITE.
Keep lying to yourself.

Like I said, WHEN the oil finishes, we shall know who really wants to stay with who, and I will get my respect as an Igbo man then.

Meanwhile, recent policy changes in Nigeria, including the appointment as finance minister of former Goldman Sachs banker Olusegun Aganga, could present new possibilities.

"Nigeria has shown some vague signs. If they could impose the level of leadership, a whole new way of governance in which corruption is dramatically reduced, Nigeria is I think very interesting," O'Neill said.
I couldn't move on without saying this.

Why is it that the only Nigerian technocrats that have ever delivered (according to their pedigree) for the country has only been Igbo?

Most Yoruba technocrats just come to the job with their qualifications and pedigree only to deliver nothing at the end.
This Olusegun Aganga is one. When this guy was appointed finance minister, most people were jumping up that a Goldman Sachs technocrats would pull wonders just like Ngozi Okonjo Iweala did when she single handedly negotiated and packaged Nigeria out of debt. But alas that has not happened! All we hear is just talk talk and more talk. Meanwhile Nigeria's economy keep getting lampooned by real experts!
Of all the Nigerian technocrats appointed by Obasanjo, only the Igbo ones performed. I'm sorry if anyone is offended, but it is the truth!

That is why I no longer cerebrate appointment of technocrats these days until I'm sure they are Igbo.

What do you think about this. Ebonyi state AGPA candidate?

Ogbuewu picks APGA guber form for N5.5m
News Dec 9, 2010

By Chris Ochayi

Former Minister of Culture and Tourism, Ambassador Frank Ogbuewu, Thursday, picked the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, nomination and expression of interest forms at N5.5 million to run for the governorship election in Ebonyi State in 2011.

Ambassador Ogbuewu, who stormed  APGA’s national secretariat, alongside supporters and associates, declared during the ceremony that his mission to govern the state was to rescue it and its people from abject poverty created by the misrule of the incumbent administration in the state.

The former Nigerian Ambassador to Greece dismissed current governor Martins Elechi, saying he had failed to improve on the lives of the people.

According to him, Governor Elechi failed to provide basic dividends of democracy to the people and has allowed virtually all basic infrastructure to collapse, especially health  and educational sectors.

He said:  “Martins Elechi has not performed well in all ramifications -  health, education, road network, security, agriculture, completion of projects inherited from previous administrations, housing, etc.

“I intend to, therefore, improve on the economy of Ebonyi State by taking a critical look and review of the internally generated revenue and do what is right in that direction.  Today, it is not the case but I think we need to start by providing the basic things we need to put in place.

“As of now, I don’t see the state government being able to pay living wage to the people of the state.  Virtually everything has collapsed nothing works in the state the state is in comatose, there is paralysis.  The people of Ebonyi are even willing to pay their taxes but government is not willing to provide basic facilities for them.

“The difference I will bring into the state if elected are legion. I will improve on a lot of things like health.  Ebonyi State is in  shambles as far as health is concerned right now.  The Teaching Hospital in Ebonyi State used to be a reference hospital, but now, it is a shadow of its former self.

“All the consultants have abandoned the place. Today, we don’t have any good, functional hospital in Ebonyi State, except the Federal Medical Centre, which is too bad.

“Education is another sorry state.  The state university has closed down long ago and all their good lecturers have been running away.  The primary and secondary schools are not in good state also.  The entire education sector is nothing to write home about.”
Yea, this is one of the reasons I believe that APGA is headed for bumper harvest next year. I pray that somehow Sullivan Chime of Enugu will declare for APGA and leave PDP for Nwodo and his crew.
I also pray that a strong candidate will bear APGA banners against Gov Orji in Abia state.

I basically pray for APGA to capture the entire south east. I don't see any other way for Igboland to gain true leadership and respect in Nigeria.
PoliticsRe: 2011: I Want To Be Imo Gov –okorocha by Onlytruth(m): 12:36am On Dec 13, 2010
I'm happy that APGA is beginning to attract big fish politicians in Igboland at last. Rochas is one of the nnukwu mmanwu (big masquerade) politicians of Igboland.
One caveat though - get him to sign a bond NEVER to leave APGA after he settles in office. Get him to commit to APGA ideals of transparent and people oriented government. Let him also use his money to build the party in Imo and give the PDP the fight of their lives.

I have a feeling that next year's election will be a bazaar for APGA in the south east.
PoliticsRe: Dora Akunyili Quits Jonathan's Team by Onlytruth(m): 10:00am On Dec 12, 2010
Does it occur to all these people blaming Dora for remaining in government, even if as information minister, that she needed to do that to stay alive in Nigeria?
All those who attempted to kill her as NAFDAC boss were still very much around, and knowing Nigeria very well she opted to remain with whatever security a minister gets, than none at all.

If anything, her possible decision to leave government now only signal that she is now feeling safer.
I wouldn't take all the risks she took for Nigeria.

I personally think its genetic.
That is the only explanation for all the black nations irrespective of location being poor,
corrupt and totally dilapidated despite several centuries of opportunities to get out of the waste bin.

To the point that even black communities in world class 1st world economies are still
chaotic, impoverished and basically a 3rd world microcosm.

This abominable genetic anomaly kicks in when blacks exist in groups but is recessive in singular
existence ; that is why individuals excel in any societies but in groups as small as 10 they cant
even select a team leader.

If you doubt it, try it.

I found it hard to believe all these allegations for a while now but I think it's begining to sink in.

On this topic I think you are very wrong. Let's leave the talk at "if all these allegations against Emeagwali are true".
I don't look at things through mob eyes.

As for the inventions, anyone with knowledge about "intellectual property" and all the dodgy games accompanying it would also dismiss and laugh off this so called Exxommobil dissociation from Emeagwali.
Why do nations waste billions on espionage? Do you think guys like Emeagwali are everywhere?
I'm laughing.
This will be my last comment on this issue in nairaland.

Faeb:
Patents are not the only form of Intellectual Property. I have not based a single argument on patents, so your arguments absolutely miss the mark.
Intellectual Property includes trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets etc.

It is undisputable that Emeagwali invented the first algorithm for petroleum reservoir simulation that employs pseudo-time Navier-Stokes equations. While algorithms are not patentable, it is still a fact that all oil companies employ  his work either directly or indirectly; therefore, it is highly suspect and disingenious, after these decades, for ExxonMobile to suddenly deny Emeagwali's influence. Why? Have they lined up names to change history to disavow Emeagwali and hand his achievements to Tom Smith? Yes, why?

Emeagwali might be a showman who has been dishonest several times over, but that is his only crime (for which he has been punished enough already). The fact remains that he is the sort of talent that no sensible country throws under the bus.
And that is the bottomline. Frankly Nigerians (especially Yorubas on this forum) amaze me! shocked shocked

It doesn't occur to any of these people that by crucifying Emeagwali, they are unwittingly sealing their own fates.
No more will a Nigerian genius be viewed without suspicion from now on, even if he discovered the algorithm for immortality.
He will not be credited because who knows? Afterall he is a Nigerian!

Even folks I thought were intelligent receded fast to their Hobbesian state out of JEALOUSY.

Gbawe, I don't think you and ndu_chucks mean the same thing. Let me explain.

You mean, there is a need for government to aid those who fell through the cracks- those who struggled to find a job but failed. Since the government won't do that, they beg. Sometimes justifiable. cool

He means, folks can decide not to work and depend on Allah for food, cloth and shelter. Since Allah has not come yet ('cos he knows he gave them hands and feet to work with but they refuse to use them), they hit the read and beg. Totally unjustifiable, and almost parasitic.

I will make this quick, Ita was of course leader but  didn't really control the power base there was to be no breakaway region. Mid West never led the Western house but were always working towards actualising their very own region.
From a strategic perspective it all depends on whether or not  being an 'eligible bride' without real power is your cup of tea.

The thread is about the south south so whats the problem? and we only came in this direction after Obiagu 1's incendiary posts after Beaf's well meaning responses fell on deaf ears. I noticed you were conspicuous by your absence in terms of admonishing obiagu because his message suited your purpose.

So these eastern minorities are such simpletons and so gullible and can't think for themselves, just imagine they will now be corrupted by those wicked mid westerners
- Geezer, you're better than this, this is one of the most condescending things I have read on this thread
So being the leader of Eastern Nigeria (which by the way included Western Cameroons then) was no big deal, or he was just a figure head?  huh huh huh

That is YOUR OWN interpretation and has NOTHING to do with facts.  He WAS the LEADER of EASTERN NIGERIA - a huge region with a majority tribe in it. The majority tribe chose him to lead them, just like we are choosing Jonathan today to lead Nigeria.

Did any of the minority in Western region lead it, even for one day? Answer NO.

Look, my point is that it doesn't take much to see where all the noise about "south south" is coming from these days.

We have people from Cross river, Rivers and Akwa Ibom on this nairaland forum. You SELDOM see them write incendiary things against the Igbo. Those are Easterners. They know that Ndigbo may not have been angels, but we certainly bettered other regions in terms of how we treated our minorities.

My point is that Midwestern minorities had a tougher life with Western Nigeria before they obtained the Midwest, hence their unwarranted militancy against majority rule. Edwin Clarke can never reason like Eyo Ita.  cool
