I've said it that Lagos properties are GROSSLY OVERVALUED.

When all the Eastern cities come alive, let's see how the Lagos property values come crashing down.

The other day I saw an advert for a property in Lagos and the seller wanted N3.5 billion.

I do not think their is a single plot of property (except oil block undecided) worth $20 million anywhere in Nigeria.  cool

Rivers Gov seeks partnerships for greater P’Harcourt City development

Rivers State Government has called on investors within and outside Nigeria to partner with it in developing the Greater Port Harcourt City, a new city being developed with the aim of expansion, decongestion and the general development of Port Harcourt into a world-class mega city.

The government also reiterated its commitment to funding the first phase of the project. Already, some developmental projects had been sited in the new city. They include the Justice Karibi Whyte Mega Specialist Hospital, the Garden City Sports Centre, Chief Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, the new Rivers State University of Science and Technology, among others.

Administrator of the Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority (GHPCDA), Dame Aleruchi Cookey-Gam, told journalists at a briefing in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, that the state resolved to commence development in the Phase 1A of the master plan to position it for further investments locally and internationally.

She noted that the government had ensured the enactment of laws backing developments in the new city, which covers security of investments. “To get the partnership of the private sector and international investors, we had to start doing things right so people can see that we mean business.

We have enacted several laws, like the public procurement law, public private participation law to regulate private partnerships and ease investor confidence; the Rivers State fiscal planning development law; and the recent promulgation of the Land use Prohibition of Extortion Law to keep youths from demanding unlawful fees from developers which in the past had inhibited development in the state,” she said.

Early investors had also been guaranteed an advantage. “We expect that our first pioneer people will get some kind of concessions, I mean, if I see someone who is ready to invest big, I don’t think I’ll be worrying myself about how much he is going to pay me for the land. If you’re going to fast track what we are doing. So the first comers will of course get an advantage that the late comers would not get. We are still trying to work out good concessions that will encourage investors. Each investment comes with its own need, so it’s on a needs basis. ”

Cookey-Gam stated that the master plan was divided and would be implemented in phases. “Tenders for infrastructure projects mapped out in the first phase of 1000 hectares are completed and awaiting approval after which work will commence. We intend to start in November after getting approval from the Bureau of Public Procurement.”

I understand why he said this, but he did not have to say anything, because by doing so he committed himself to retaining the unjust status quo. Don't get me wrong, that is why some northerners are supporting him. undecided

Even a retard knows that Nigeria needs structural changes and that the system that produce this national assembly is part of the problem.
We have 6 unequally represented geopolitical zones at the national assembly; so, there can never be justice for the zone with the least number of states. So, anyone saying that current national assembly (or any assembly using the same representation formula) is not qualified to tinker with any structural changes to Nigeria.

So, unless Jonathan is saying that he will not change anything (which is even worse undecided), then, we have a problem.

Lets examine Emeagwali's own recent utterances:

From these two, and the sum of the article at http://www.nigeriavillagesquare.com/articles/philip-emeagwali/memories-of-colonial-africa.html, I conclude several things:

- Emeagwali is borderline delusional. Turing, Stokes, Babbage, Pascal, Gauss, Cauchy,  none of these giants that contributed to this field ever said anything like this. And if they did, they would be laughed out of the room.

- Emeagwali is an empty barrel. He didnt invent any equations. Solving an equation computationally does not mean you invented it, or invented something akin to it. This is intellectually dishonest.

Emeagwali supporters, you deserve the fraud you get. The rest of us want no part of 419 scientists
I don't think inventing an equation to solve a problem is much of a big deal. That is what algorithm designers do all the time as they create new programming languages.

Now that this thread has sanitized a little, I think it is time I shared my personal view on Emeagwali.

I do not think he is an academic or a scholar. He is a scientist. He is only suffering from the usual Nigerian disease.

Why is he trying to obtain a PhD in civil engineering when he is a COMPUTER SCIENTIST, and has already won a grand prize for computing? huh

Answer, he was planning to adjust into the Nigerian job market just in case.

A classmate of mine scored the highest in JAMB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Maths) in a particular year, even without trying. In the year we were studing for our JAMB, the guy was busy writing a novel. He was a straight  A science student and we named him "Rutherford" for his genius. But when it was time to choose a course, his family prevailed on him to choose medicine. The guy wanted to be a scientist but had to think about the job market in Nigeria. He basically abandoned his natural calling, and today he is a sullen doctor practicing in Lagos, when he could have become a BOEING scientist or NASA scientist or engineer. The guy could have even won a Novel prize in Physics or Chemistry (YES HE IS THAT INGENIOUS cool).

So, why would Emeagwali be wasting his time trying to be a civil engineer when he should have started a software development company?

Oh how I wish he is from Nnewi! cool

Now, I leave the stage for the usual holocaust deniers.

Racism Or Laziness?

The case of Philip Emeagwali is a cautionary tale on the pitfalls of self-delusion, laziness, and a sense of entitlement. Mr. Emeagwali enrolled in a doctoral program in Civil Engineering at the University of Michigan in 1987. His coursework over, he took the comprehensive examination that qualifies one for candidacy. He failed the exam twice and did not take it a third time. In the meantime, he conducted the research that would later win him the Gordon Bell Prize, a research he began as a class project for one of his graduate courses. In 1991, two years after winning the Gordon Bell by default, he petitioned the Dean of the School of Engineering to be allowed to submit a dissertation (despite not having passed his candidacy exam and therefore not being a doctoral candidate) in a different department — the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. His request was curiously granted in what was clearly a sidestepping of standard procedure. Emeagwali submitted the dissertation, basically a rework of his entry for the Gordon Bell competition, on July 24, 1992. A team of internal and external evaluators examined it and found it unworthy of a doctorate and turned it down. grin shocked shocked shocked shocked

Emeagwali then sued the University of Michigan for racial discrimination. The lawsuit was dismissed for lacking merit and also failed on appeal in 1999. shocked shocked The details of Emeagwali’s graduate school records and of the dueling contentions in the lawsuit are all documented here http://www.michbar.org/opinions/appeals/1999/102999/5473.html in the court record of the Michigan Court of Appeals.  Na wao! No wonder u will never find his name on Ms encarter. I was wondering.
So, he actually won the Gordon Bell!  shocked shocked shocked shocked I'm shocked!

Like I said, most of you have never attended a graduate (Masters level) or Post graduate course in a TOP US school.

Those who have will see through certain things.

I don't think the topic is whether he failed his PhD attempts. The topic is that he is a fraud.

@ OYB,

The wikilink article you posted actually lends credence to Emeagwalis position.

BTW, I find it weird that someone who has several degrees and Masters in Mathematics and other scientific disciplines would struggle to pass entrance exams for a doctorate in Civil Engineering. I would hazard a guess that a lot of work in any Civil Engineering PHD will involve a lot of Finite Element Analysis and I don't see any Mathematician struggling with that. I can only hazard a guess that Emeagwalis failure to make a way in Civil Engineering would have been due to external factors.

Besides, I find it funny that Emeagwali has the capability to remodel Navier Stokes equations for given Petroleum Reservoir problems, discretize these equations using his own assumptions, apply appropriate boundary conditions and time-differential solutions, model his own Governing PDEs for high Reynolds flow, set up the parallel computing process to solve these equations, win a prize for all this work. . . and still fail to earn his PHD.

He must have been a really eccentric character who likes to do things his own way cos the ability to do all those things I've listed should guarantee one a PHD today. Maybe I'm just naïve cos I've never done a PHD, but probably not. There's something fishy here.

And BTW, Emeagwali may be guilty of blowing his trumpet too loud but he cannot be a total novice.
Let's keep in mind that he is not really an academician. He is a scientist. Like Bill Gates, or Bill Joy or any number of other obscure weird computer scientists who are non-conformists.

What I find baffling is that he WON the Gordon Bell prize. Some say he came second. Show me other Africans that came second.

Nigerians are pathetic.

PoliticsRe: The Brain Box Of Nigeria: Anambra Or Ekiti? by Onlytruth(m): 6:17pm On Oct 19, 2010
Reference:
This is a case of apples and oranges. Where do we have better brains in the US - Washington, Silicon Valley or Wall Street. They all have very good brains but apply their intellect in profoundly different ways. I suppose the Ekiti set-up is more about education while that of Anambra, commerce and industry. Interestingly both should play very important roles in national development but I think why GEJ acknowledges that of Anambra is that it directly impinges on job creation and poverty alleviation. Thus it is not surprising thus that unemployment is lowest in that region.

However as the President will know as well Ekiti is as important to national development as Princeton or Harvard or MIT is to Washington, Silicon Valley or Wall Street. In fact they complement one another. Ekiti professors can develop ideas and Nnewi implement them. That is why in the US it is common for intellectuals to move into industry then into government and back again very comfortably and seamlessly.

The key here I think is values. If objectivity, achievements and purpose remains the motivating factors and not financial gain alone then these localities become complementary not competitive. And until as Nigerians we value our men and womenfolk by what they achieve and contribute to society rather than the size of their tunics, automobiles or condos then this question will continue to be debated.

Sir Alex will never be jealous of Wayne Rooney. Shrek (pardon me) earns a lot more than him but the battle is always to draw the line between who is boss and who is not. The players must respect the lesser earning coach. Stephen Hawkins would never be moved by the wealth of Bill Gates even though their impacts are matched. This is how we should see these things.

My worry here in this country is also that some are not contributing anything or barely anything yet they want to be the most educated and skillful (through quotas), the wealthiest (through allocation, contracting) and the most powerful (through political jobbing). They ignore the diversity and competition that places a lid on high corruption and we are not the better for it.
I think you missed the most important point -Anambra is bigger than Ekiti in EVERYTHING: Schools, professors, scientists, lawyers, businessmen/women, banks, industries, you name it!

That is the GIST.

You have some points there.
The population in Igboland may not be that thick, but we are talking about winning the elections nationally. Remember that he needs to get the majority of the total votes cast and get 25% in 2/3rd of the nation.

Getting the single largest votes cast is a national thing. That is why I talked about SE/SS/NC and hopefully a good chunk of SW. He would then need to get that 25% in other northern states (which is possible).

Exactly!

The funny thing is that he does not even need to win the extreme northern states. All he needs is to win 25% in each of those states (which is possible in that context).
I don't know when the next census will be, but he already has things like national identity card data captured during the last exercise. He can make all the necessary deductions and projections from there.

Assuming this is true.

If this endorsement is about protecting the interests of the Igbo during the tenure of GEJ, the Ohaneze's decision may be right.

If it is about getting the presidency after GEJ's tenure, they are clearly wrong. This decision only takes care of short term interests.

The ohaneze better back the decision up with prayers that the SW doesn't swing the other way, it will be too bad.
I wouldn't think that Ohanaeze or Jonathan is really counting seriously on South west votes to win this election.

My educated guess is that Jonathan wants to win South East, South South, and North Central. He would then turn South West into a battle ground where he will get some votes . If he does these, he will win.

The most strategic zone in the forth coming election is the South East.

Again, Jonathan may be in possession of true population figures of Nigeria (not the fake being bandied for years). He may know where the population lies.

So, this endorsement is big deal.

As for Igbo interest in Nigeria, I really think it goes beyond the presidency. For now, we need more states and true federalism with equitable distribution of political offices and federal projects, eg. roads, airports, Niger bridge etc.
