Most reports said the rally turned nasty after the crowd was whipped up by several racist speeches by right-wing MPs, several of them from the ruling Likud party of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"The infiltrators are a cancer in our body," Likud MP Miri Regev told the crowd, as fellow MP Danny Danon shouted: "The infiltrators must be expelled from Israel! Expulsion now!"

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said 20 people had been arrested on suspicion of vandalising shops and attacking cars driven by Africans, but added that there were no reports of anyone being injured.

The police have also extended the remand of seven Israeli minors accused of attacking African immigrants earlier this week, he said.

Interior ministry statistics show there are more than 60,000 African immigrants living illegally in Israel.

Some are asylum seekers fleeing persecution, while others are economic migrants. Almost all of them sneak across the border from the Egyptian Sinai and end up living in the run-down neighbourhoods around Tel Aviv's bus station.

The issue of illegal immigration from Africa has thrown into relief sharp divisions within Israel, with many top officials, including Netanyahu, warning that their growing numbers pose a major threat to the security and identity of Israel.

Wednesday's nights violence made headlines in all the main Hebrew-language newspapers, as well as on the TV and radio stations, with army radio denouncing it as a "pogrom."

In a bid to halt the influx of immigrants from Africa, Israel has been building a 250-kilometre (155-mile) fence along the Egyptian border. It has also built a vast detention centre near the border to house anyone caught crossing the frontier.

At the start of the year, Netanyahu said he was planning to visit several African capitals to discuss the issue of immigration, but so far no such plans have been made public.

The predominately black neighbourhood of Hatikva was ransacked by groups of nationalist protesters who had attended a demonstration on Wednesday night against illegal African migrants.

The protesters claim the Africans are responsible for a rise in crime, bearing signs saying "This is not Africa" and "Stop talking, start expelling".

"Blacks out!" shouted demonstrators in the crowd, while others yelled "Send the Sudanese back to Sudan", as other protesters derided the "bleeding-heart leftists" working to help them.


The mob set cans of rubbish on fire, smashed the windows of shops owned by Eritrean migrants and beat up Africans walking through the streets.

TJ, a 29-year-old migrant from Nigeria, watched the violent chaos from his rooftop having been chased and pelted with rocks when he attempted to leave his house.

"There were protesters everywhere smashing shop and car windows," he said. "A group of about 10 or 15 boys stopped one black kid cycling on his bike. They pulled him off and were punching and kicking him in his head. The police just stood and watched until it got really out of control."

Other witnesses described a gang assaulting a mother carrying a young baby so violently that she was forced to drop her child. Others stopped shuttle buses to search for migrant workers among their passengers.

The Israeli police confirmed they had arrested 17 suspects involved in "a protest against illegal African immigrants". Extra police units were positioned to prevent further violence in the area last night.

Peace Now, an Israeli human rights organisation, is calling for an investigation into whether the speakers at Wednesday night's rally, including Knesset ministers Miri Regev, Danny Danon, Yari Levin and Michael Ben-Ari, are guilty of incitement.

During her address, Ms Regev described illegal immigrants as a "cancer in our society".

Danny Danon, a member of Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party, wrote in a Facebook status later the same evening: "Israel is at war. An enemy state of infiltrators was established in Israel, and its capital is south Tel Aviv."

According to Israeli government figures, there are currently 60,000 African asylum seekers in Israel. The vast majority come from Eritrea and Sudan and were smuggled into the country by foot through Israel's southern border with Egypt, many having been beaten and tortured by their smugglers in camps in the Sinai en route.

Israel terms any illegal immigrant through this border an 'infiltrator' and estimate 90 per cent are economic migrants coming to Israel to look for work – a stark contrast to the figures in England and Canada, where 66 per cent and 96 per cent of Eritreans who arrive illegally are granted refugee status.

The Israeli government currently does not deport Eritreans or Sudanese however Yehuda Weinstein, Israel's attorney general, will appear before the Jerusalem District Court next week to argue that there is no longer a legal obstacle to expelling 700 Southern Sudanese refugees. If approved, Israel will be the first country to have reached this decision.

Defending her position on Thursday, Ms Regev insisted that while she does not condone violence, African immigrants pose a grave demographic threat to Israel. "Israel should adopt the US protocol of returning infiltrators to the border within 72 hours ... Jews and Israelis are scared of living in their country," she said.

Mr Danon's proposition to prevent further violence was to deport the city's African residents " to detention facilities and remove Africans from population centres".

Bracing themselves for a second round of nationalist protests on Thursday evening, the residents of Hatikva are struggling to resume normal life.

'TJ' says he is among the few who has left his home following the violence: "Black people have been too afraid to leave their homes to go to work today. Racism in Tel Aviv is not only getting worse it's getting out of hand and the police are no help. We are terrified."

Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Viola Onwuliri has dismissed the Western propaganda against Tehran, praising Iran’s ‘vigorous’ social and economic environment.

The Nigerian foreign minister, who travelled to Iran to participate in the fourth meeting of the joint economic, industrial and trade commission of Iran and Nigeria, expressed Abuja’s determination to promote its relations with Tehran.

Salehi, for his part, expressed satisfaction over the growing bilateral ties between Iran and Nigeria and reaffirmed the Islamic Republic’s resolve to further enhance the relations in different spheres, including economy, energy, petrochemicals, technology, industry and agriculture.

The Iranian foreign minister also made reference to the achievements of Iranian scientists in cutting-edge know-how such as nano-technology and other medical services, and indicated Iran’s readiness to transfer such expertise to Nigeria.

Iran’s Minister of Industry, Mine and Commerce Mehdi Ghazanfari has expressed the country’s readiness to share its experiences with Nigeria on the removal of subsidies.


“In Nigeria, there are many oil subsidies handed out by the government. Iran will use its experience to help Nigeria positively remove its subsidies like Iran has done,” Ghazanfari told Press TV.

“It is important to mention that Iran has been acknowledged by the World Bank and the IMF (International Monetary Fund) for removing its subsidies, and the positive impact it had on its economy,” he added.

The Iranian minister’s remarks came on the sidelines of the fourth meeting of the joint economic, industrial and trade commission of Iran and Nigeria.

Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Viola Onwuliri also explained that the Nigerian president was impressed with Iran’s positive achievements in removing subsidies.

She said that Nigeria has started the removal of subsidies, adding that her country is willing to benefit from Iran’s experience in completely removing the subsidies.

In addition to taking part in the two-day joint commission, the visiting Nigerian minister will also hold talks with Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi to discuss bilateral ties.

Firstly,it is the duty of the police to investigate this case.they should either serve justice and punish those men in uniform or they should prove to us that Mr.Bukhari is lying and the incident did not happen.it is the responsibility of police to provide safety and security in the country.you don’t dismiss things like this.we are not in court as yet.

I have not for once questioned whether or not this thing happened. I have purposedly omitted the fact that Mr Buhkari was illegally in the park in the first instance, and he could not provide identification on request. Normally, this should warrant an arrest.

Firstly,being in the park at 6pm is not illegal.secondly,even if we accept it was illegal then the man ought to have been arrested and not robbed.does policemen have the right to rob people because they commit one offence or the other? Secondly, the names he produced did not match anything on the police database. Thirdly, Mr Bukhari was not willing to help the investigators. He refused to show up at the police station.

The reason I am taking this issue personal is because I strongly believe this case is skewed on many levels. I live in Britain and I know how things work. While everyone has a right, they also have a responsibility. If I get robbed of £800 in a park in Britain after its closing hours, I must be ready to give a very very strong reason as to what I am doing at that place and time.
