Middle East Online By Jean-Luc Renaudie – JERUSALEM https://www.middle-east-online.com/meopictures/big/_52442_A2.jpg Who’s expelling whom? Israeli Interior Minister Eli Yishai demanded on Thursday that all illegal African immigrants be put "behind bars" before kicking them all out. "We must put all these infiltrators behind bars in detention and holding centres, then send them home because they come and take work from Israelis," he told army radio. Unless the government took urgent action, there would "soon be half a million to a million, and we cannot lose our country to this," said the minister, who has frequently called for the expulsion of non-Jewish immigrants, sparking cries of racism. Violent race riots that shook southern Tel Aviv overnight sparked shock in Israel on Thursday, but also prompted top-level calls for the immediate arrest and expulsion of tens of thousands of African migrants. The latest unrest to sweep the impoverished neighbourhoods around Tel Aviv's central bus station erupted on Wednesday night when a demonstration of around 1,000 people who were protesting against the rising number of Africans moving into the area turned violent. "Shock, violence and hatred of foreigners in Tel Aviv" was the headline in the Maariv daily, which described scenes of chaos as demonstrators went on the rampage with sticks and stones, attacking African-run shops and smashing up a car driven by two African men. "Blacks out!" shouted demonstrators in the crowd, while others yelled "Send the Sudanese back to Sudan," several media reports said, as other protesters derided the "bleeding-heart leftists" working to help them. Most reports said the rally turned nasty after the crowd was whipped up by several racist speeches by right-wing MPs, several of them from the ruling Likud party of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "The infiltrators are a cancer in our body," Likud MP Miri Regev told the crowd, as fellow MP Danny Danon shouted: "The infiltrators must be expelled from Israel! Expulsion now!" Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said 20 people had been arrested on suspicion of vandalising shops and attacking cars driven by Africans, but added that there were no reports of anyone being injured. The police have also extended the remand of seven Israeli minors accused of attacking African immigrants earlier this week, he said. Interior ministry statistics show there are more than 60,000 African immigrants living illegally in Israel. Some are asylum seekers fleeing persecution, while others are economic migrants. Almost all of them sneak across the border from the Egyptian Sinai and end up living in the run-down neighbourhoods around Tel Aviv's bus station. The issue of illegal immigration from Africa has thrown into relief sharp divisions within Israel, with many top officials, including Netanyahu, warning that their growing numbers pose a major threat to the security and identity of Israel. Wednesday's nights violence made headlines in all the main Hebrew-language newspapers, as well as on the TV and radio stations, with army radio denouncing it as a "pogrom." In a bid to halt the influx of immigrants from Africa, Israel has been building a 250-kilometre (155-mile) fence along the Egyptian border. It has also built a vast detention centre near the border to house anyone caught crossing the frontier. At the start of the year, Netanyahu said he was planning to visit several African capitals to discuss the issue of immigration, but so far no such plans have been made public. http://www.middle-east-online.com/english/?id=52442 |

Israeli anti-immigration riots hit African neighbourhood of Tel Aviv Tel Aviv has been hit by the most violent protests in its recent history after more than 1,000 Israelis took to the streets in the city's south to demand the deportation of African immigrants and asylum seekers. By Phoebe Greenwood in Tel Aviv 4:08PM BST 24 May 2012 The predominately black neighbourhood of Hatikva was ransacked by groups of nationalist protesters who had attended a demonstration on Wednesday night against illegal African migrants. The protesters claim the Africans are responsible for a rise in crime, bearing signs saying "This is not Africa" and "Stop talking, start expelling". "Blacks out!" shouted demonstrators in the crowd, while others yelled "Send the Sudanese back to Sudan", as other protesters derided the "bleeding-heart leftists" working to help them. The mob set cans of rubbish on fire, smashed the windows of shops owned by Eritrean migrants and beat up Africans walking through the streets. TJ, a 29-year-old migrant from Nigeria, watched the violent chaos from his rooftop having been chased and pelted with rocks when he attempted to leave his house. "There were protesters everywhere smashing shop and car windows," he said. "A group of about 10 or 15 boys stopped one black kid cycling on his bike. They pulled him off and were punching and kicking him in his head. The police just stood and watched until it got really out of control." Other witnesses described a gang assaulting a mother carrying a young baby so violently that she was forced to drop her child. Others stopped shuttle buses to search for migrant workers among their passengers. The Israeli police confirmed they had arrested 17 suspects involved in "a protest against illegal African immigrants". Extra police units were positioned to prevent further violence in the area last night. Peace Now, an Israeli human rights organisation, is calling for an investigation into whether the speakers at Wednesday night's rally, including Knesset ministers Miri Regev, Danny Danon, Yari Levin and Michael Ben-Ari, are guilty of incitement. During her address, Ms Regev described illegal immigrants as a "cancer in our society". Danny Danon, a member of Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party, wrote in a Facebook status later the same evening: "Israel is at war. An enemy state of infiltrators was established in Israel, and its capital is south Tel Aviv." According to Israeli government figures, there are currently 60,000 African asylum seekers in Israel. The vast majority come from Eritrea and Sudan and were smuggled into the country by foot through Israel's southern border with Egypt, many having been beaten and tortured by their smugglers in camps in the Sinai en route. Israel terms any illegal immigrant through this border an 'infiltrator' and estimate 90 per cent are economic migrants coming to Israel to look for work – a stark contrast to the figures in England and Canada, where 66 per cent and 96 per cent of Eritreans who arrive illegally are granted refugee status. The Israeli government currently does not deport Eritreans or Sudanese however Yehuda Weinstein, Israel's attorney general, will appear before the Jerusalem District Court next week to argue that there is no longer a legal obstacle to expelling 700 Southern Sudanese refugees. If approved, Israel will be the first country to have reached this decision. Defending her position on Thursday, Ms Regev insisted that while she does not condone violence, African immigrants pose a grave demographic threat to Israel. "Israel should adopt the US protocol of returning infiltrators to the border within 72 hours ... Jews and Israelis are scared of living in their country," she said. Mr Danon's proposition to prevent further violence was to deport the city's African residents " to detention facilities and remove Africans from population centres". Bracing themselves for a second round of nationalist protests on Thursday evening, the residents of Hatikva are struggling to resume normal life. 'TJ' says he is among the few who has left his home following the violence: "Black people have been too afraid to leave their homes to go to work today. Racism in Tel Aviv is not only getting worse it's getting out of hand and the police are no help. We are terrified." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/israel/9287715/Israeli-anti-immigration-riots-hit-African-neighbourhood-of-Tel-Aviv.html |

sometimes, nairaland feels like a past time for illitrates and outlaws going by the racist and nonsensical stories and comments. the police should know you don't arrest someone based on looks.also,if there are chinese without documents, then administer justice and observe the law.two wrongs don't make a right.China is fast becoming the world power and the world's strongest economy. |
i think civilized people would support the effort being made by his ex-wife.regardless,if he had divorced her,she bore him a daughter and her effort to know the truth should be commended as humane.before, even the body is exhumed for autopsy, the police should make sure those who forcefully dragged Yekini from his house are arrested as suspects.so,i believe everyone should assist the woman to get down to the truth.if this case dies down, then everyone should expect more of the same thing to happen again.tomorrow,it could be you or me who others want to take advantage of.and if such incidents are taken with no seriousness, then many innocent people still alive will fall victim.let justice be served.there is nothing wrong with exhuming his body for medical test.let evil people and murderers don't use the Muslim rite of burying the dead quickly as excuse to evade justice and bury the truth. |
I keep reading on nairaland the accusation that Buhari is a religious fanatic.can people who accuse him of being a religious fanatic please come out and list the actions Buhari undertook that makes him to be a "religious fanatic" ? please no need for bickering and much grammar.just list for me that Buhari did so and so.that would be enough as evidence for us to examine.thanks. |

Ikorodu is in Lagos-yes we know.a mere case of some people seeking attention and feeling important about themselves. thank God the purported suicide bomber is yoruba and not hausa.if he was northerner, even if no bomb was found people would still not rest their suspicion.useless nairalanders will still continue blabbing and making racist and irresponsible statements. |
this is either a very wreckless and uncalculated move by the government or a deliberate one out of partisan politics to disrupt the peace in Lagos,an ACN ruled state. the right place for these prisoners to be taken "secretly" is either bayelsa or akwa ibom.they should be taken to states that are far away from the north and not as populated and ethnically diverse as Lagos.Lagos does have a large community of northerners.once the location is known, dont be suprised to hear that boko haram armed thugs are engaging the security forces in gun battle to free their members. what the government is bringing into Lagos is unwelcome.Lagos is densely populated with less space than other states. if i'm to analyze further,i think whoever created boko haram is trying to change tactic by using this government move to open a detention centre in Lagos.obviously, boko haram killing mostly northerners and muslims in the north is not succeeding in its plot to drive the country into chaos, and division.so bringing the prisoners to Lagos, will get the south involved as boko haram could turn its attention down here.then, boko haram could attack and that is that-a big goal scored by boko haram to destabilize Nigeria for its agents.i'm sure the idea of government officials and foreign intelligence bodies (CIA,MI5,MOSSAD,e.t.c.)having link to boko haram is no longer secret and it is a well thought idea Nigerians are realizing more clearly than just a mere suspicion. |

Onwuliri made the remarks at a Monday meeting with Iran’s top diplomat Ali Akbar Salehi in the Iranian capital, Tehran. The Nigerian foreign minister, who travelled to Iran to participate in the fourth meeting of the joint economic, industrial and trade commission of Iran and Nigeria, expressed Abuja’s determination to promote its relations with Tehran. Salehi, for his part, expressed satisfaction over the growing bilateral ties between Iran and Nigeria and reaffirmed the Islamic Republic’s resolve to further enhance the relations in different spheres, including economy, energy, petrochemicals, technology, industry and agriculture. the christian silence on this thread is shocking!!! amazing the topic isn't about "suicide bombing" in the Quran but in the bible!!! |
the idea of having police checkpoints in principle is not bad if it is needed to prevent crime.but our nigeria police do not know the use of checkpoint than for money making.you put them on checkpoint, they become a national disgrace whereby they are begging, causing traffic to ensure no car passes without paying "police toll".they become a nuissance for motorists.so yes,i do fully support them to be off the roads. now regarding crime itself, since the removal of checkpoints, have crime increased? during the time we have checkpoints, did crime decrease? how many criminals were arrested on these checkpoints? were they effective at all? i dont think so.criminals in nigeria are smarter than having themselves caught in checkpoints either for being criminals or being in possession of weapons or stolen items. so please, those who are calling for those armed-robbers in uniform to return to checkpoints, should shut-up!these lawmakers have no idea what people who move in their cars without sirens and special plate numbers pass through.the police can fight crime better when not distracted with begging on checkpoints.the bribe can cause police on checkpoints to be ineffective in tackling crime or even arrest a criminal,if that criminal offers a bribe.the police can still be in the area of points they use to mount roadblocks and observing without putting any barrier on the road to slow down traffic and beg.removing checkpoints does not mean that the police should go to their stations and abandon the streets.in europe, police check for documents and arrest illegal immigrants and criminals with no checkpoint for begging.the hideouts of the criminals are known to the police.rather than making crime an excuse to beg and reinstate checkpoints, the police should go to the hideouts and get the criminals.they can even help us make their "checkpoints" in those locations to make sure criminals have no base.but i'm afraid they could be taxing the criminals to allow them operate or even share the "booty" with them.this is the extent to which the hungry nigeria policeman can go with corruption. so please,Oga lawmakers, talk more about reforming the police and the implementation of effective means to combat crime rather than advocating for checkpoints and means to beg or harass innocent people and disgracing the country by the police.a number of innocent nigerians have been shot by the police for as low as 20 naira bribe without any word from these same lawmakers.how are we to take them seriously or believe they truly care for the well-being of a nigerian citizen? the cry of the lawmakers could be as a result of presure from the police who no longer have income through the checkpoints. |
Nigerians should walk barefoot to Katsina State, weep bitterly and beg Muhammadu Buhari to contest in 2015 and become president.he is the only hope Nigerians can depend on to clean and revive the system and the entire country.otherwise if you continue voting on ethnic and religious lines, you will have thieves in government blessed by thieves in churches who themselves have private jets.Nigeria needs a strong man who is straightforward and honest without a "pot belly". |
justwise:so since they didnt do that, why do you oppose the british and nigerian government taking responsibility for the failed rescue operation which has led to the killings of the hostages? besides, the nigerian govt. doesnt have to call all nigerians for a meeting.i am simply saying that the nigerian govt. should not have allowed foreign troops conduct military operation on nigerian soil.the sovereignty which belongs to the people who elect government do not give right to government to bring in foreign troops into the country to conduct military operation. you are talking as if nigeria had a choice in the matter as much as we think.britain could easily apply "you are either with us or with the terrorists" mentality to conduct this operation and sway the president into agreeing.so please, stop talking as if you dont understand what you read. |
justwise:the sovereignty of nigeria belongs to the people of nigeria and not to the government of nigeria or Jonathan.get that in your head. |
justwise:are you trying to be funny? |
it is very sad indeed to hear this news. i hold the company they were working for responsible and the government of britain. they could have paid a ransom to save the innocent men.and really we have heard nothing about this kidnapping since last year. also,i condemn the british leading a military rescue operation in Nigeria.under no circumstance is that welcome.i want to blame Jonathan for not refusing such breach of nigeria sovereignty by the british.this operation can now be seen as a failure and triumph for the kidnappers.it will only embolden them.the british over-confidence and Jonathan's approval have cost the lives of two innocent men working for their daily bread. |
davidylan:are niger-delta militants who specialize in kidnapping foreigners for ransom "mooslims"? must fanatics, hatemongers and sectarianists comment? |
LASTMA officer deserves beating.good for him. many times, instead of correcting you or telling you from the start not to take a road because it is one way, they would let you enter the trap and then apprehend you. on traffic lights,if you cross as the light just turned orange, they will try their luck to approach you as if you've done wrong.if you were not attentive, they will harass you. most times, they will jump into private cars as if it was Fashola that bought the car for the owner.without permission, they enter people's cars and sometimes talk nonsense and throw insults. sometimes, they will even ask you to surrender your key to them. i wonder at all if these "area boys" are put on the streets to generate income for the state government which ofcourse they use as a channel to extort people.this is just crazy in Lagos. i have promised myself that the day any LASTMA official would try to stand infront of my car to apprehend me while driving when i have not committed any offence,i will hit him and break his legs.then we can talk the matter. they are very useless set of animals in uniform.we have seen the ones that can rival the nigeria police on abusing the rights of people and humiliating them. |
ola_pluto:and you think he has your time? you really need to go back to that thread and see the nonsense you have said over there. you are either very malicious or jobless.why are you stalking the man from thread to thread.he isnt entitled to answer you on every point since your joblessness isn't an official investigation. And yes, the president does not care indeed! It is 5 working days between petition day and today! Labaran Maku probably has not seen the president since then. You are insulting your intelligence Mr. Go back to the thread above and answer the questions posed. Be HONEST WITH YOURSELF!when have you become the spokeperson for the president? you claiming that the minister has probably not seen the president is malicious and wicked. every wednesday there is a federal executive council meeting where the president chair the ministers in meeting.so how then can you make such a worthless claim? you need to listen to your conscience.just because you are not convinced doesnt mean you should deliberately try to derail this man's case and his quest for justice. |
Onlytruth:my advice to you is not to start what your Ikemba could not finish.dont start another adventure that will see the devastation of innocent lives and property. if you admire him so much, you can feel free to follow him to the grave, but remember not to drag anyone else with you. as for the funeral aspect,i'm sure you are hinting at Yaradua's funeral for its simplicity, which is a trademark of muslim burial.they do not keep their dead frozen like meat for over a month parading him up and down as was done with your ikemba. |
if there is truly law above everyone, Jonathan ought to sack this woman tomorrow. how can a minister of the federal republic of Nigeria be an advocate of biafra or appraising herself for it and still hold her job? this is confusion! as far as i am concerned, ojukwu and the proponents of biafra are evil-mongers and greedy people.the igbo states are too small and unproductive for them to form a landlocked country.obviously, that wasn't the aim of creating biafra.it wasnt to give igbos a country.rather it was to take over the niger-delta and control it as "big brothers".it is all about the oil. when i actually listen to people like dokubo asari,a muslim from the niger-delta,supporting his "igbo brothers",i find that ridiculous and mischievous.dividing nigeria would only lead to igbo domination of the oil-rich niger-delta and eventual war against the igbos by the niger-deltans.then ofcourse its a pandora box. i hope all this civilian nonsense and silly statements would not lead this country's democracy to a failure which would see the army take over under the excuse of protecting the country's unity and sovereignty. |
ola_pluto:my friend i have not accused "everyone" of racism.i have accused you and cited your words as evidence. i personally have examined the evidence Mr.Bukhari has put forth and i see no reason why i should discredit him or attack his person or identity as you have done. Let us table this case and make sensible inferences. So far, I have not said any untruths about Mr Bukhari. If I have, please point it out and I will apologise. I only ask that he be honest in reporting his case.if you have gone through his facebook page and the many articles and interviews, you can find answers to many questions.but you just cant sit here and tackle someone crying from injustice based on his image.that is unfair.even the police have not given grounds to ignore or discredit him. you asked about untruths.you claimed that policemen dont man the park.that is a lie. you should go through the posts and replies in this thread for you to read what you've posted and the replies you got.then you will see the evident bias and lies you are spreading. |
ola_pluto:working hard on this matter must see that those two criminals in uniform are punished.the police is not working hard and is portraying itself as incompetent by saying the names of those officers are not found in the database.whose fault is that? how can there be police officers with guns guarding a famous public place and their names are not found? you dont play games and deny this man justice because he is a foreigner.the country is already full of people as such who at the slightest incident would address a foreigner:"do you think you are in your country"? and so what if he isn't in his country? are strangers here to be maltreated even by the law enforcement agents? this isn't something good for us. Mr Buhkari has accused the Nigerian police, but he is only doing so by word of mouth, with no proofs except what he says and he banks on people like you to be his alleluyah boys.Don’t worry! May be you have never felt injustice from those criminals in uniform.let them rob you at gunpoint then I will ask you if there is no evidence to prove your case. Firstly,it is the duty of the police to investigate this case.they should either serve justice and punish those men in uniform or they should prove to us that Mr.Bukhari is lying and the incident did not happen.it is the responsibility of police to provide safety and security in the country.you don’t dismiss things like this.we are not in court as yet. I have not for once questioned whether or not this thing happened. I have purposedly omitted the fact that Mr Buhkari was illegally in the park in the first instance, and he could not provide identification on request. Normally, this should warrant an arrest.Firstly, being in the park at 6pm is not illegal.secondly, even if we accept it was illegal then the man ought to have been arrested and not robbed.does policemen have the right to rob people because they commit one offence or the other? Are you okay? Oh,so they didn’t arrest him and showed him a favor by robbing him.isn’t that how you sound? Having said that, you and I will agree that anyone can accuse Nigeria of anything nowadays. The onus is now on us as Nigerians to establish the truth in the matter from facts we piece together. The police have said they do not post their men to that particular park. Therefore, anyone there was not on official duty in the first instance. Secondly, the names he produced did not match anything on the police database. Thirdly, Mr Bukhari was not willing to help the investigators. He refused to show up at the police station. This isn’t a case of someone accusing Nigerians or Nigeria of something.this is a case about a couple of criminals in police uniform.why must you see it from the view that “it is us against them”? The police have said they do not post their men to that particular park? Are you lying or is the police lying? I went to the park a few days ago and policemen were there.how come? A public park with hundreds of people without security men? Is that possible? If this man seeking justice is harmed in the process showing up in Nigeria, who would take responsibility? Wont we hear another story that the people who harmed him are anonymous?stop kidding here my friend. The reason I am taking this issue personal is because I strongly believe this case is skewed on many levels. I live in Britain and I know how things work. While everyone has a right, they also have a responsibility. If I get robbed of £800 in a park in Britain after its closing hours, I must be ready to give a very very strong reason as to what I am doing at that place and time.Have you bothered to know what time the park officially closes? You live in Britain and you are this close-minded. Being somewhere after closing time is not a criminal offence.being robbed at that time is a criminal offence.if this had happened to you in Britain,it would be raining snow in hell or fire in heaven!!! I must also be ready to show my identification. Moreover, I do expect that the first thing to do is to report to the police, and not a military general or a presidential special adviser. That is another wrong info you are spreading.the first action the man took the following day was to visit his diplomatic mission in Abuja and he was given a policeman to report at the maitama police station. Also, I will wait for the result of police investigations,Is denying police names are found in the so called database an investigation to you? if I am not satisfied, I will go to court. I wonder what evidences this man will tender in court to prove this case actually happened. I believe he is trying to prove his innocence by getting the police to admit guilt by funding his trip to Nigeria. You are talking nonsense because you are in Britain where there is law and order.you are enjoying this man’s peaceful and orderly country while you deny him the courtesy of justice by tending to his case of injustice properly in your own country.you should treat others the way you’d like to be treated.that is the least you should do.until the police proves to us that those criminals are no police officers, and there were no policemen there that evening or this man is lying, then I believe this man.which story from the police am i even to believe? You are advising him to go to court,he will eventually go if no conclusion is made.but you know what could happen in court with time wasting.justice delayed is justice denied.talking that he is trying to get the police fund his trip as a way of admitting guilt for the case is not true.the police funding his trip would ensure that the police is accepting responsibility for his safety and security while he is in Nigeria. We all know the case of Baba Suwe, not a foreigner, but got 25m for wrongful detention. Let Mr. Bukhari come go to Nigeria and prove his case. Also let him be honest in all he does.Baba suwe sued them because initially when he was accused of smuggling drugs, his news on how many times he excreted was reported.may be you should ask those criminals who robbed this man to have reported the incident in the media. So far, I will not pick the obvious incoherences in Mr. Bukhari's statements yet, till he responds to the issues I asked. You have used that word “incoherence” before.and you are the one and the police that are giving out incoherent statements. And please let us argue this case without bringing tribe into it. The accused policemen do not have Yoruba names. IGP Ringim who invited BUkhari is not Yourba. I want justice for this man and justice for Nigeria. But let him come with clean hands. You obviously are bringing tribe and race into this issue.from the onset you viewed this case as “us against them”.you shouldn’t even bother to waste anyone’s time by discrediting someone’s case with your discrimination and sentiments against him for being a foreigner. |
