The nation's Apex bank, the Central Bank of Nigeria has officially announced the resumption of sales of forex to Bureau De Change starting from August 31, 2020.
This decision to commence forex sales according to the Central Bank of Nigeria was at the instance of the resumption of international flights to the country.

According to the circular seen by dambela.com, forex sales will resume on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Reports reaching us have it that a good number of Nigerian medical doctors are warming up for a mass exodus out of the country as the lift of the ban on international travels draws closer.

From the data from the United Kingdom shows that Kingdom’s Medical Council that the number of Nigerian doctors migrating to the UK increased by almost 100 between July and August despite the restriction on international flights.

It was observed that even during the lockdown period, some doctors were still applying for visas and travelling out of the country for greener country even as the Covid-19 pandemic hits hard.
It was, however, learnt that following the re-opening of the British High Commission a month ago, many of these doctors had obtained visas and had left even though the restriction on international flights had not been lifted.
International flights will resume in the country on Saturday. The UK recently introduced a ‘Health and Care Visa’ policy, which aims to make it cheaper, quicker and easier for healthcare professionals to migrate to the UK.
A doctor in Abuja who spoke in anonymity said some Nigerian doctors have been offered jobs in Saudi Arabia and the offer is worth about $10,000 and they will be leaving immediately after the lockdown.

It's yet another sad situation for the Nigerian economy with recent report released on Monday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows that GDP took a deep turn as it declined in real terms by 6.10% in real terms year-on- year in Q2 2020.

According to the numbers contained in the GDP report, the performance recorded in Q2 2020 represents a drop of 8.22% points when compared to Q2 2019 (2.12%), and 7.97% points decline when compared to Q1 2020 (1.87%). Apparently, the significant drop reflects the negative impacts of the disruption caused by COVID-19 pandemic and crash in oil price on the Nigerian economy.

Following President Trump's ban against the Chinese tech giant Tiktok some couple of weeks back, the firm has threatened it would take legal action against President Trump's executive order that ban transactions with the fast-growing video app and its Chinese parent company, ByteDance in a report credited to Reuters.
The Chinese firm lamented that it had tried to engage in dialogue with the Trump administration but such move had suffered a set back and faced "a lack of due process" and to ensure that the rule of law is not discarded and that our company and customers are fairly treated, we have no choice but to challenge the executive order through the judicial system, says the company spokesman.

There is wide fears in Bamako, the capital city of Mali, as residents are in panic mood as reports seems to indicate that President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has been allegedly arrested and detained after several gunshots were heard at an army base in Kati, which is 15 kilometres from the capital.
This was disclosed by some security sources ,according to Reuters today.

In line with the gradual but continuous easing of the lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic which has brought a total shutdown of the entire economy, the federal government has announced the resumption of international flights operations from August 29, 2020.

This was revealed through a post by the the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika via his Twitter handle today.

Hadi Sirika, in his tweet post, stated, ‘’Glad to announce the resumption of international flights from the 29th of August 2020. Beginning with Lagos and Abuja as we did with the domestic flight resumption. Protocols and procedures will be announced in due course. We thank you for your patience.’’
So flights are expected to begin in Lagos and Abuja airports for now.

The tribunal has dismissed the election that ushered in governor Diri Douye of Bayelsa state and ordered INEC to conduct a fresh election within 90 days.

In a divided judgement of two -one , the three -man panel ruled that INEC does not have the powers to disqualify any candidate in any election.

This judgement is coming after the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party filed a petition challenging the victory of Governor Diri in the November 19 governorship election after the party claimed INEC unlawfully excluded it from the election.

But INEC in its argument had challenged that the party’s Deputy Governorship candidate was 34 years old as at the time of nomination and therefore did not qualify to contest the election.

It’s quite an amazing feat for the global community and Russia in particular as it announced its successful production of the first batch of its newly approved vaccine, Sputnik V, some hours after health ministry reported the commencement of its production. A letter of assumption of office as the Acting Vice Chancellor has been purportedly issued to Prof. Theophilus Omotunde, a prof of sociology by the Governing Council of the University of Lagos headed by Dr Wale Babalakin stating he assumes office as acting vice chancellor with immediate effect.

Speaking via a telephone conversation, the prof of sociology stated that he has resumed office and now in charge because the letter of appointment given to him notified him to do so with immediate effect.

But many feel he could resume officially at the 11th floor of the senate building where the Vice Chancellor's office is situated. This is based on the removal of Prof. Ogundipe just this week by the Governing Council.

The former US ambassador to Nigeria Mr Walter Carrington is dead. He died on Tuesday 11 August, 2020 at age 90 in the United States of America.

The University of Lagos popularly known as UNILAG has reportedly fired its Vice Chancellor Prof. Olawatoyin Ogundipe Sacked.

His removal was announced by the the institution's Governing Council presided by Pro-Chancellor Dr. Wale Babala,in (SAN) on Wednesday during a meeting held at the National Universities Commission (NUC) building in Abuja.

It was reported that a panel made up of 12 members voted. 7 voted for his removal while 4 voted for his stay and 1 voted for his suspension.

Good fortune seems to be smiling the way of Nigeria as the country is set to commence the production of gold in 2021 after the launch of the Segilola Gold Project in Osun state.
This was stated by the Honourable Minister of Mines and Steel Development Olalekan Adegbite in a statement signed by his special adviser on Media , Ayodeji Adeyemi who stated that the project is going to create about 400 jobs directly and about 1000 jobs indirectly through its value chain.
Once this project kicks off, it will place Nigerian on the centre stage as one of the gold producing countries and would enable the diversification of the economy and create massive job employment and also increase our foreign reserves.
It would be interesting to note that the Federal government had already licensed two gold refineries to refine gold to the London Bullion Market Association, LBMA, standard.

Tragedy struck in Serbia on August 7, 2020 as a popular Nigerian basketball player Michael Ojo, was pronounced dead by his last club on Friday.

The Lagos born basketballer who played for KK Crvenazvezda Basketball club died at the age of 27years in the capital city of Belgrade in Serbia. President Trump has announced banning of the Chinese owned video sharing app Tiktok. He made this known to reporters stating that he could sign an executive order early Saturday.

The Federal Government through the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige has revealed that it had paid medical doctors in teaching hospitals and primary health care centres across the country hazard allowance worth N15.8 billion.
He also confirmed that the Federal Government has cleared the April and May special allowances. According to him, medical personnel can now withdraw their normal salaries and other allowances.

It would be recalled that resident doctors had threatened to embark on strike if their allowances were not paid . This payment followed threats by the resident doctors to embark on strike if their hazard allowance needs were not paid. ” The federal government has so far spent not less than N15.8 billion naira for hazard allowances in its teaching hospitals, medical centres and some other non-Covid facilities where doctors have also been treating virus cases.

Reports just coming in has confirmed that the President of the African Development Bank Dr Akinwunmi Adesina has been exonerated of any wrong doing he is being accused of by the American government and other African countries.

It would be recalled that an investigative panel was instituted against him to probe allegations of corruption, misconduct in office, favouritism and nepotism amongst other allegations levelled against him. The panel seems to have concluded its investigation and submitted its report.

The World Health Organisation has released a report showing an increase in the number of cases rising by 284,196 within 24 hours, while the number of death cases rose by 9,753 which is the highest since April 30 when the WHO recorded 9,797 death cases and 259,848 number of cases since July 18.

With this latest report, the number of of recorded death cases is now on the average of 5,000 per day in July, up from an average of 4 600 daily as compared to the month of June.

According to the World Health Organisation, this new surge in cases are mostly from the United states with 69,641 new cases, Brazil with 49,310 cases, India with 49,310 and 13,104 for South Africa. This is the first time the number of new daily infections has surpassed a quarter of a million.
Global death cases rose by 7,360 the largest daily increase in May with the biggest increase in Peru 3,876 deaths , Brazil 1,284 , US 1,074, Mexico 790 and 740 for India.

India became the third nation to record more than 1 million cases of the Corona-Virus disease on July 17, 2020 after the United states and Brazil.
