De-congesting a city that solely thrive on business is not a child's play.
Sometimes when you move from one business location to the other you will lose customers depending on the kinda business you're doing.
Business activities in Umuahia was killed because Ta orji moved their market to another location though he built it like the Nigerian standard but that relocation forced many traders to open street markets.
So at Onitsha, relocation of market should be done with ease to avoid traders opening up new branches at Asaba and moreover personally I won't like to see Onitsha get de-congested because my presence here is to promote the great OTU CITY because people especially those who has not been to Anambra and East to some extent has talked down Onitsha in a disgusting manner which I don't like. I will like to see anything that will make Onitsha to grow more in economic activities which number1 of them is population, big markets(which onitsha already have) industries and bubbling hotels and hang out spots.
So my point be say, town planning should be fully enforced on neighboring towns at Onitsha to make it grow maturely.

I have heard people say that if you sweep markets and keep them clean, it will drive away their customers! Since they would believe the goods will be more expensive if it is sold in a clean environment. lol...

Infact,I have lived in the US more than any city I have lived in Nigeria. When I went home for my wedding some people find it hard to believe I am from US because my Igbo was so pure but then I also speaks and understands Yoruba and when I speak pigin people wont believe I am Igbo. People actually dont know I am Igbo until I speak the language. This is what traveling and mingling with different culture does to your life, It enriches you. I have always like Abia women because of my experience with a certain Ugochi.....lol

I grew up in Onitsha, but i did live in Yaba, Lagos on St. Finbarrs college rd. for a while, and also read Chemical Engineering at ESUT before going to the US. So i have Onitsha accent and even my village guys call me Onitsha girl. lol
Unfortunately, not much show for Engineers in the US. So like my hubby, i switched to MPH in Environmental science and PhD in Global health.That gives away my true identity a little because few schools offer that in the US. However, I intentionally go by Yoruba name to disguise me a little as a promise to my husband that nobody "will arrest him" for his wife's online comments. Even though,we do have Yoruba in-laws in his family.

I have always considered myself lucky to marry into Anambra. This does not diminish the greatness of my parents state, Abia. I hitherto had zero interest in geography even in my secondary school days. However, since i married into Anambra, i had taken a keen interest to know where every community was located, their neighbors and their key customary practices (Omenala). Living both Anambra and Abia traditions firsthand has really enriched my life.

I actually joined NL sometime last year or when i stumbled over the site during my PhD dissertation. I was doing online research on FGM and stumbled on this site, where someone had accused Igbos of FGM lately. I washed shocked being a mother, an Igbo woman and I was sure it had been stopped some time ago to the best of my knowledge.
I was soon turned off by the NL site, until i peeped again someday and saw more horrible stuff said about Igbo women and dished on Stella Oduah!

I realized like in the poster that i had to speak up quickly and i did. Sometimes using unsavory language.My husband HATES NL and he knows that when I'm free, it's my favorite hang out place... because i sincerely believe that in our interaction ( sometimes rough), we learn from each other's unique life experience. Which will often help us solve many problems confronting us. In 2009 or 2010, Peter Obi was once asked by ASA,USA what Anambra people in the USA can do to contribute to our state's development and he answered us simply in two words- CONTRIBUTE IDEAS!

I am happy my ideas are found worthy to be brought to His Excellency's notice. That is totally why i waste time looking at Anambra and seeking better ways of doing things based on what i have learnt from other countries. i had previously lamented the lack of email or electronic access to Anambra governors, which i thank God Obiano maintains a facebook page and Twitter account. I am devoted to helping chart a new course for Anambra and Igboland in general. The major difference between Nigeria's stagnated development and other countries such as Brazil,China,Mexico etc is that they have a pure vision of where they want to go and money to support it,while we have lots and lots of money but lack vision in Nigeria.

A flyover need to link MCC with Oraifite Street, Awada.

A flyover need also to like Atani Rd and Uga Street, then dauliza the Atani Rd.

Nnewi-Ozubulu-Ihembosi-Okija Rd need to be dualized and a flyover will connect it with Onicha-Owerre Expressway.

Nnewi new Rd need to be dualize because that is the official entrance to the city.

Siting the airport inside that forest there will kill the economic value of it, the airport should be sited around Oka so that it will be in the center of Asaba-Enugwu-Owerre, that Aguleri site is off and isolated, the land should be used for corn plantation or animal husbandry.
No Onicha or Nnewi residents will use that far airport inside thick forest when Asaba is even closer in less than 5mins.

I don't think the governor is being clannish. Take a look at Anambra map now, you can clearly see that zone is perhaps the only place left with ample land. Tell me a place at Okija or Oraifite that you can find 4 KM of fallow land which can be used for an airport runway without massively relocating villages or spending billions to fill up swaps. Perhaps the only place you can site at Okija will be the Okija to Umunankwo or Atani axis. Which is a swamp as you know already. Nonethe less, Peter Obi is trying to connect a road from Ozubulu to Atani through that swamp costing billions of naira and many bridges to do. Most of Anambra peoples' future buildings and projects will simply be sited in Asaba, unless serious conscious effort is made to open up the land in Anambra north through adequate infrastructure so that development can continue on Anambra soil.

If you really want an egalitarian state which has a modern capital and Onitsha is opened up for further extension, you have no choice than to develop Awka towards Otuocha and build infrastructure so that Onitsha can expand towards Umunya and Nsugbe. Then you would agree with the governor and Peter Obi that it is the only area of our state where we can still find 20 virgin square kilometers to build a modern Anambra without paying so heavily on acquiring land and fighting people who you will inevitably demolish their houses.

A lot has to be considered before even the Awka to Onitsha end starts. Anambra's budget this year is N164 billion, that won't be enough to cover capital intensive projects like light rail, in addition to serious road construction like the 47 kilometer Aguleri/Oil rig road (for comparison, Lagos to Sagamu is about 60 kilometers).

So the project will have to be a PPP, the question is will then be, is there a proven business case for the project? How financially viable is it? Obiano is a banker, so he'll understand how to make the case. When the case is made, then investors can be brought in.

A project of this nature will not break-even for many years, if it gets off the ground. But as a practical matter - how much traffic moves to and fro Awka to Onitsha and will the light rail totally displace commuter transport? These are questions Obiano's people must answer.

As for the Rivers monorail, I think it is a classical white elephant. It isn't economically viable (standard light rail would have been more appropriate like Lagos & it does not lead to anywhere). Anambra should steer clear of such projects.

On the balance, I think the Anambra Airport project will be more viable (and is cheaper, costs $150 million). The success of the Asaba airport shows there's a lot of demand for aviation services in Anambra - & and airport with out the Niger Bridge bottleneck and the stress of passing through Enugu (federal road is terrible) will be welcome.

Also note that the airport is to be tied to the oil refinery. It is to serve as a hub for aviation fuel. Don't mind the tag "Cargo Airport", Owerri is a "Cargo Airport", but handles mainly passenger traffic.

You are looking at it from the point of view of building it tomorrow. Which is wrong.
This Anambra light rail project may cost N30-50 billion naira. Which is definitely unaffordable for Anambra. Therefore, You have to roll it out over 5 to 10 years period and spend about N5 billion naira on it every year. But the earlier you start planning for it and implementing your plans, the closer you get to the day when it will be commissioned.

Even in America, it took the city of Atlanta about 10 years to build its light rail metro line. It's definitely not a quick fix project.

Unlike Onitsha/Awka where you can simply use the middle of the expressway (if you check the median of the Enugu/Onitsha express way it is very wide), doing a railway from Awka to Nnewi or Nnewi to Onitsha will require a lot of "right of way" or land issues.

What they are planning is something similar to Fashola's Lagos/Badagry light rail (only difference is Enugu/Onitsha Expressway) will be used.

I think the should build the Awka to Onitsha line first using the expressway median. The would require no bridges and should be cheap and affordable.
Then as the Awka-Onitsha line begins to earn revenue, government will deploy some of that revenue to build the expensive Onitsha-Nnewi line which requires long flyover bridges for go over the built up areas. But at least then, they will have more revenue coming from the already functioning Awka-Onitsha line.

A 13 kilometer spur can run from the refinery at Otuocha to meet the Awka -Onitsha line at Nteje. This way, people can easily go to work from Onitsha and Awka to Otuoch while agricultural produce from that area can also easily be transported to Onitsha or Awka.

No, it is not going to be a monorail, the person I talked to was clear about that.

Although intra city light rail system will do a lot of good for moving around Onitsha, it won't be peanuts because almost the entire railine will have to be a bridge. There are simply no spaces left for the train to run on land. It will be a herculean task designing and building an intra city train for Onitsha metro. The roads are really, really tight.

Schematics:
The dualization of all the roads around the mall is in the 2015 budget. Even the Sir Louis Ojukwu road will be dualized from Ozubulu junction to the mall..

That will be wonderful to achieve. Nnewi needs dual carriage roads to help traffic.
I hope they know paying for property compensation will be a huge part of the money.

That is the best and perhaps the only remaining site in the heart of town for the mall. To make traffic flow easily;

1. They should ban street parking around the Mall triangle roads.
2. They need to build 2 roundabouts on the two points showed in yellow circles in the picture.
3. Then strictly enforce the One-Way direct of traffic for those coming from Nnobi road and those joining it. As showed in the arrow showing the road direction.

So long as people are allowed to drive as they please and make U-turns as they desire around that area, the traffic jams will simply worsen.

I learnt that Ethiopia engaged a Chinese construction firm (China Railway Engineering Corporation) to build a 35 Kilometer long light rail projects for Addis Ababa mega city project for the sum of $475 million dollars about N8 billion naira. This project involves about 20 rail overpasses!

Then i measured the exact straight line distance from Onitsha outskirts to Awka outskirts is exactly 20 kilometers (Yellow line). From Nnewi to where the Onitsha station is located will be 15 kilometers!
With 35 kilometers the same length of the Addis Ababa light rail, we could linkup the 3 biggest cities in Anambra by light railway ! The enormous impact of such a project on the socio-economic status of the state can only be imagine. The best part is that if the Chinese could build it for about N8 billion naira in Ethiopia, they might charge about the same or slightly more to replicate that project here. Even if it cost N10 billion naira, such money spinning project will quickly pay for itself. Not to talk of the fact that due to the highly commercial nature of the 3 cities that it will link together, many banks will be very willing to finance this project.

We may build the project in 2 phases. Phase 1 will build the yellow line (Onitsha to Awka). The Awka-Onitsha line will run in the Median of Onitsha-Awka expressway, which has a huge median as in the pictures below. That way, it won't need many costly bridges to complete and may even cost less than N3- N5 billion naira for the about 20 KM stretch without flyover bridges.
Once the phase 1 line (Onitsha-Awka) is functional and earning money, then Phase 2 line (Blue line) Onitsha to Nnewi will commence. Eventually, the Onitsha station can be extended to Otuocha, The Awka line can be extended to Ekwulobia and the Nnewi end to the line can be extended to Ihiala.

This is not to say Peter Obi did not have his mistakes and flaws.In my opinion, Obi failed woefully on the environment. The failure to ban Okada in which many Ndi-Anambra were dying everyday from preventable injuries was also regrettable. Having said that, considering the type of people he had to deal with in order to instill sanity into Anambra state, he deserves more than a pass mark for all he did.

Obiano has since begun to plug all the loop holes Obi left unplugged. Such as doubling the IGR within 6 months and still rising. Concentrating on making the environment "live-able" by chasing away criminals and embarking on real ambitious projects to transform the sorry look of our state capital.
