andrewza: Brits have never exported it. People call all composit armour chobbam these days and that is wrong. America use there own composit armour developed in America. South all so uses it's own composit armour.
Chobbam is britsh only used by them. It has become a word used to describe all composit armour but this is wrong.
Jeez if you want to get super technical then ja/nie
The official code name for the armour tech the british gave Americans and West Germans is Burlington Armour was changed to Chobbham.
The armour on the Chally 2 is Dorchester Armour which evolved from Burlington
Chobbham is the over-arching name to describe the whole family - including Almagest, Buckhorse, Pageant and some other experimental ones
Chobbham armour is, specifically, the name for the British family of composite armor technology. Americans were given access to that family of technology right from the start - late 1960s.
So when people say Chobbham they mean one of the 5 types of armor listed above.
When they talk about Chobbham and refer to an operational tank they mean either Burlington or Dorchester.
Henry240: This is fantastic news! This aircraft would fit in well into NAF's requirements. If Badeh and Amosu were not such morons, some of these orders should have taken place along time ago. This aircraft could replace the G-222 and Donier DO-228 in NAF service. We mount a FLIR pod like we do on virtually all our aircrafts these days and we got a decent multi-role aircraft. It can carry 71 troops, performs excellently in hot & humid conditions and is powered by two powerful Pratt & Whitney engines.
Excellent choice by NAF. A minimum of 6 Aircrafts should be our start-up order, and a further 4 in the years ahead.
Nice!
Work out the flight costs. Remember when RSA got offered a lease of those 5 MPAs? It worked out to an operational cost of R155 million per year with one flying every 2 days, excluding acquisition costs.
Your budget is shrinking not growing, with the war against Boko winding down its going to be harder and harder to get money from Govt who would rather use it to buy votes.
africaken254: because how old is a abram tank design !the design of most ATGM hasn't evolved that much, most still use tandem warheads.TOW and MILAN ATGM's which are much older ATGM designs are still penetrating newer and even Up-Armored tanks.
Again, no Abrams with the DU layer has ever been penetrated.
Big difference between the M1, M1A1, M1A2 and M1A2's with SEP (1, 2 and 3)... As well as the other half dozen upgrade systems floating around (TUSK, HA+ etc)
Iraqis use the old M1A1 (no DU, no SEP, not fully digitised), Saudis use mainly M1A2S (degraded SEP v1) which have chobbham but no DU.
Equatorial Guinea is currently engaged in a major, but little-reported naval expansion. In recent years it has acquired four Bulgarian-built ships (two PV 50 patrol vessels, as well as Wele Nzas and Bata ),two 62 m offshore patrol vessels, two Shaldag fast attack craft from Israel Shipyards, and a Chinese-built 91.45m roll-on/roll-off landing ship.
upko1: Ouch!!! Sad twist of events @activatekruger come and see American facebook boys, so unprofessional The Ugandans, Ethiopians, Eritrean's, Burundians and even Lesotho are better than them always posing for pictures up and down when fighting starts they pull out TOW missile
Except none of the images he posted were what he said they were
TrueHeart365: This is why no one should take you seriously. You love to wallow in your ignorance and that it's so cool for you.
Pic 1 and 2 is devgru gold squadron 3&4 CIA SAD & Delta force
(He thinks OPSEC Lasts Forever)
Ps: Your Pic 1 is Michigan National Guard, Recon Company, 425th Infantry (look at the patch on the guy with the mask)* Your Pic 2 is Green Berets not DEVGRU (What is reverse-image search?) Your Pic 3 is CIA-GRS not CIA-SAD (What is reverse-image search?) Your Pic 4 is a retired operator (What is reverse-image search?)
ActivateKruger: As I said before, big numbers need bigger budgets. When you buy something you need to have a proper plan to keep it running otherwise you'll have another Aradu scenario.
You don't need large numbers of vessels for pirates to know you exist. A single OPV launches a helicopter for a 400km patrol radius, two give you 800km and so forth. With just 5 OPVs you could cover the whole Gulf.
To maintain 5 OPVs at sea 23/7 means you will need 15 minimum... Training, reserve, maintenance included
jln115: Actually its just a Puma that looks like a Puma, the nose included!! The Oryx is simply a (substantially)upgrade Puma thus it looks almost identical from a far.
if the PIC was taken closer, you would see that the Oryx has different air-in -takes, and overall is a bit shorter......also a few other minor differences like the wheel arches ext ext
Oryx is a Puma body with an engine from a Super Puma... Or something like that
africaken254: the few frigates,OPV,Oiler e.t.c just like what happened to iraq navy during Gulf war 1.will be totally eliminated thus not hindering an amphibious landing on your shores.now if you have land based anti-ship missiles,a barrage of those anti-ship missiles (even sub-sonic anti-ship missiles) would seriously threaten any ship anchored or sailing across and near your coast. even after an israeli warship was hit by a hezbollah anti-ship missile, israel was not able to track the launcher, because those launchers can easily hide among civilian traffic or sheltered among the sprawling urban dwelling near the coast
They couldent track because they had the relevant radar turned off at the time and the impact decaliberated the system.
The targetting systems allot of shore based radars use are like a floodlight of radar waves, you cant not see it if you are looking (properly)
ActivateKruger: Whatever aged the Aradu would age other new frigates if purchased. The ship itself is not old, I mean we still have strike crafts commissioned in the 70s still in active service in the SAN. Before rushing into refitting or buying a frigate, your navy could better launch a formal inquiry on how a young ship like the Aradu got into this current state otherwise your navy could keep going in circles.
OPV's still in service are from the late 80's and are at the end of their hull lives - 4-5 more years and they will have to be scrapped no matter what.
If Aradu is double hulled it may be worth it, but otherwise, it soon wont be able to stop in anyones ports.
ActivateKruger: Considering the ever growing budget cuts and the looming free tertiary education for all, military spending is likely to suffer. After the Arms Deal, South Africans are bitter about anything called the military.... The Orxy needs a replacement and I hear in less than 10 years. I don't even think we'd be able to buy 30 or so medium lighters as a replacement. Sad times
Free education isnt going to happen. Its the Nuclear Deal + Slow Economic Growth multiplied by a weak Rand.
But ja, the Oryx issue keeps me awake at night.
With Zuma at the helm the economy will not recover, so we have to wait until after elections to see what happens. But who knows, if this fees must fall buisness continues long enough* maybe the Government will be forced (maybe only subconsciously) to review military capabilities.
*This is blatantly in the realm of a 3rd force. I am getting strong Arab spring vibes. Ever wonder why our economy got rocked right after we announced the BRICS bank to rival the IMF? Notice how Brazil randomly went down earlier this year (the silent coup)? Notice how their economy hit the tubes right at the same time as ours? Ever wonder how the fvck the EFF (who is supported by the poorest of South Africans) can afford such lavish election campaigns and rallies? Im not usually one for conspiracies, but this sh1t is pilling up so thick and fast that there is definitely something going on, just what I dont know, but something. Probably just home grown agitation from the EFF, but I remember studying South American history at University our story is beginning to be very similar.
africaken254: if you had the authority in procuring in SANDF,Which chopper would you procure in the place of Frelons ? for me ,i just want a Mi-26
CH-53E Super Stallion because it makes funny things happen in my underpants when I look at it.
CH-53K if we had dat Arab money.
Seriously though, second hand Super Stallions. Big payload but without the drawbacks of the Chinhook (its quite unwieldy). Its also cheaper than helicopters that compare more to the Oryx than to heavy lift (NH90 or Super Cougar).
I feel that the Mi-26 would also prove to be unwieldy and cumbersome unless you have nice open planes to deploy on. You need something that is nimble enough to quickly drop into tight LZ's
ActivateKruger: Most African countries (with an exception of a few) don't have enough helicopters to drop a battalion-size infantry into action. Those who do, have not demonstrated that capacity in recent years. The only times this happened on African soil was when the SADF 32 Battalion would be dropped into battles in Angola and would be quickly extracted back to Namibia within hours. ... As for now, it's just tactical insertions.
Back in the day we used to have an entire air mobile brigade (6 S.A.I, First City Regiment, Prince Alfred's Guard).
They still exist, but I think only 6 S.A.I is fully qualified with only elements of FCR and PAG being qualified.
Anyway, now we could never deploy more than a battalion without stripping helo's from other duties, and the loss of the Super Frelons has greatly reduced capabilities.
We would need 20 Oryx to move an entire battalion in two waves. That leaves only 19 for the rest of the Airforce. Even if you throw in the Augusta's it doesnt change much.
Its sad that we will never get those capabilities back... all I want is Apocalypse Now ride of the Valkyries in the African bush
SANDF aquires "mobility packages" for border patrol

At company level, the maximum deployment will be 18 troop carriers and three each of logistic, command and control and ambulances.
overhypedsteve: OK. It was a joke. Most victims of Police Abuse complain of the senile officers making jokes while torturing them. Let's leave it as it is though.
Its all part of the "rhino" policing plan - a R27 million project to upgrade JMPD capabilities.
Including this tactical command center - boast computers‚ internal and external high definition 400 metre range cameras, a mini boardroom, flood lights‚ back-up generators and mobile clinic where breathalyser and blood tests will be conducted
Johannesburg Mertropolitan Police take delivery of first 2 (of 4 ordered) locally manufactured Riot Control vehilces.
Its an absolute beast, crew of 8, comes equipped with less-than-lethal 40mm grenade launchers, colour TV/thermal imager, and a acoustic device (disoreintates people)
africaken254: you bragged a lot how saudi wanted to buy your armed seeker 400 UCAV,recently we found out they opted to buy chinese CH-4 UCAV in simple english for you to understand. stop acting like a m@roon !in simple english for you to process ,a 52 caliber artillery has a better range than 39/45 caliber artillery due to increase length of the barrel
So what? Is kenya selling or making drones? No? Ok, feel free to STFU.
Also: Are you telling us the Soltam out-ranges a G5?
