Surrey Police could not confirm whether the accounts belonged to Mr al-Hilli himself and stressed that the fraud charges were not linked to the ongoing investigation into who murdered the Iraqi-born engineer together with his wife, mother-in-law and a French cyclist. A Surrey Police spokeswoman said: "Abiodun David John was arrested at an address in Salford, Greater Manchester in October. He returned on bail today where he was charged with eight counts of fraud by false representation which are alleged to have taken place between July and September this year." About 100 police officers in Britain and France are investigating the murders of engineer Mr al-Hilli, 50, his dentist wife Iqbal, 47, her elderly mother, Suhaila Al-Allaf, 74, and passing cyclist Sylvain Mollier in a horrifying gun attack near Chevaline, Lake Annecy. The couple's four-year-old daughter Zeena lay undiscovered under her mother's corpse for eight hours after the shooting, while her seven-year-old sister Zainab was found with serious injures after being shot and beaten. French investigators searched the al-Hilli family home in Claygate, Surrey, in the wake of the deaths. Later in September, Surrey Police asked Greater Manchester Police to arrest John at an address in Alban Street, Salford, on suspicion of fraud offences. Media reports have linked Mr Al-Hilli with a secret trust account thought to include £15million in illegal kickbacks to Saddam Hussain's regime. But French police last month denied any link between the British engineer and Saddam Hussain. The idea that the killer may have been a lone psychopath was 'gaining ground' according to police. Officers suggested that the type of gun the killer used - a 7.65mm Luger - is not consistent with the work of a trained assassin. Trust my people. Thanks everyone and please keep it coming. I’ve asked my friend to have a look at these suggestions. Let me react as follows. 1. Chidi’s is in the field of education and practically/basically wants to teach in a College or UNI and obviously do some business alongside if that’s feasible/possible. So, the idea of seeking employment in multinational oil and gas isn’t really applicable to him. Of course, except he finds a multinational NGO like the UNESCO which focuses on education. Or, maybe, the educational section of the British Council. 2. Chidi is absolutely clear in his mind that he would relocate back home ONLY after (a) completing his house and (b) securing a job in a higher institution in the same city where his house is or within a short commuting distance of that city. These should help to ensure that he’s not (a) jobless on relocating back home; and, (b) renting – that way his income would be rent-free. 3. Chidi is not crazy about money. Of course, he doesn’t want to live like a pauper. He simply wishes to live a comfortable life! The idea of wanting to return home is borne out of the fact that he feels under-utilised here doing what he’s doing right now and with a PhD certificate locked up in the lockers. In fact, if his employers know he is a PhDer they most probably wouldn’t have employed him (over-qualified syndrome), meaning he could have been jobless right now. 4. @ Billyonaire: Personally, I wouldn’t consider him a failure. He has struggled to get to where he is. He looks back and sees many of his NCE colleagues who didn’t further their education still teaching in dilapidated village schools. All is not about money. OK. That said, the money he had already sunk into his building project could have completed a basic structure if he wanted just anything. That explains why his building project is still under way. Also, mortgaging is the key to owing a house in the developed world. The fraction of people who out rightly owns their property in this part of the world is infinitesimal. Personally, I credit him for juggling both – having a mortgage here and completing a building project back home. 5. @ pato405 – I’ve towed the studentship path and could have gone back home if not for securing a job which commensurate with my qualification. I doubt if I wouldn’t feel the same doing a call centre job or driving a taxi/cab in London with a PhD in the bag. 6. Finally, whilst entrepreneurship cannot be dismissed out of hand and whilst people should always think of creating rather securing jobs, some do not have what it takes to run/manage a business. We all cannot be businessmen/women. The world over, people go to top notch schools (Harvard, Oxford, Stanford, Cambridge, Yale, LSE, etc) and upon graduation seek top notch jobs with top notch multinationals. Personally, I don’t think hunting for jobs after graduating is as a result of brain colonisation. If, however, after graduating and you can’t find job one could, subject to the availability of capital, go down the route of entrepreneurship. 2 Likes |

Emmanuel Ikem, 27, of Hawthorn Avenue, Thornton Heath, used 13 identities to claim the money, between February 2007 and June 2012. Croydon Crown Court was told on Monday that Ikem made multiple false housing benefit claims, setting up different bank accounts so he could receive the money. He created false documents and Julius Capon, prosecuting, said that a considerable amount of planning had gone into claiming the money. Mr Capon told the court that fake birth certificates were made, along with false tenancy agreements and utility bills. He said various other letters were also forged, including ones from the job centre. Ikem pleaded guilty to 17 counts of fraud by misrepresentation, and was sentenced at Croydon Crown Court to two years in prison because he had pleaded guilty. Ikem also admitted a further three counts of insurance fraud, spanning from 2009 to 2011, where he accumulated £8,000. In sentencing, Judge Jeremy Gold said: "It is never nice to send a man into custody for the first time. "But you have committed a series of frauds. You have put so much thought into it, its a shame that it didn't go into any lawful activity. He said: "You chose to rely on dishonesty resulting in a loss of £90,000 to the public purse. "That is quite apart from the three insurance frauds of £8,000. "I have read the letters from your family and it is a shame that this will leave you all affected by your dishonesty." Ikem was visibly upset when the sentence was given, along with friends and family. One person told him to keep his head up. DC Jim Cann, from Croydon Police's financial investigation unit, said he was pleased with the sentence. He said: "It was a fair sentence. It reflects the amount of crime he committed. Dear Nairalanders, In the past decades, Nigerians travelled abroad to study, earn their degrees and proudly returned home to join the civil service, teaching commissions, etc, etc. Not so any more, thanks to the past and present leadership. Hence, I'm posting this in the politics section. I recently ran into an old school friend of mine (he was my classmate in the secondary school in the 80s) in London during a lunch break. By the way, I have his permission to post this anonymously. This old schoolmate, arguably, has really struggled. Moving from NCE to gaining a BEd degree, teaching in a few Nigerian schools before moving to the UK to study for his MEd, he finally gained his doctorate degree in education in 2009 and hasn’t secured any meaningful jobs to even earn a graduate salary. Nonetheless, he currently earns around £15,000pa (some £15,000-£20,000 short of what he could potentially be earning if he secures a PhD job, lecturing in a UK university). He has an uncompleted building project back home in Nigeria (needs roofing, windows, doors, plastering and general finishing which in his estimate would gulp some =N=3-4m). He also has a mortgaged property here in London. This could self-service itself (i.e. mortgage repayments), through rents, even if he decides on moving back home. Oh yes, he has kids currently schooling here in London and his very humble wife, a UK graduate, works as a social worker, earning significantly (£15,000pa) more than he does. Unhappy with his current situation (working in a job centre), he told me he’s seriously considering returning home with or without his family. Despite gaining citizenship through his wife (a Nigerian-British), he’s not considering other EU countries or North America. I strongly advised him against returning to Nigeria for the following reasons: 1. If he returns to Nigeria and gets a lecturing job, even as Lecturer II (CONUASS 3), he couldn’t earn the equivalent of £15, 000 pa which he’s currently earning. Please correct me if I'm wrong. 2. The quality of life he would enjoy here in the UK earning £15k pa is far better than that of Nigeria, earning a lecturer 1 wages. 3. The wife as a social worker is not likely to get a SW job in Nigeria. If she does, she’ll never earn in Naija what she’s currently earning here in the UK. 4. The couple’s potential earning capacity in Naija would prevent them from educating their children in Nigerian secondary schools with standards similar to those of UK schools.
