Put the profile of Jim Yong Kim (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Yong_Kim) side by side that of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ngozi_Okonjo-Iweala) for consideration for the highly coveted World Bank job, one would have thought that REASON would inevitably prevail and Mr JY Kim would be advised to go and seek a top notch medical position whilst Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala would only need to compete with fellow economists and not a medic. If Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala had binned her Nigerian passport and nationality and naturalised as a US citizen (except 'am wrong here that she's not a US citizen) and had contested in that capacity, she could have secured this position. This appointment epitomises what ordinary Nigerians in the UK, USA, etc, experience on a daily basis. If you choose to remain true to your Nigerian identity and returned home to play your own little part, you stand the risk of being vilified if not hounded -- experiences which Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala continues to be subjected. This leads me to ask two crucially important questions as follows. First, could Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala have secured this job if she is American and had contested as American (and not as a Nigerian) citizen? Second, if you have the opportunity, would you ditch your Nigerian citizenship and flag your British/Canadian/American passport (where Nigerian passport and citizenship can only harm your chances) in order to secure your dream job what it is?

Universities are meant to be citadel of intellectualism, but Nigerians have turned it into the DEN of mediocrity where not-known-to-be-true religious claims trump critical thinking and rational autonomy.

I am no fan of Bakare. Albeit, Ola Makinde, the Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria (MCN) is an ABSOLUTE i[i]d[/i]iot. Was it not under his nose that the Rt. Rev. Of course, like Bakare, he never made it. But that's not to condemn their aspirations. Did Jesus not protest against the religious and political leaders of his time? Or, how else would anyone explicate the narrative of Jesus and the money changers, commonly referred to as the Cleansing of the Temple, reported in all four canonical gospels of the New Testament? And, in any case, is religion logically independent of politics? Anyone who is familiar with American presidential electioneering, including the ongoing primaries would acknowledge the fact that in America, for example, religion and politics are bed-fellows. The world over, religion is inseparable from religion: one informs the other. Has Makinde never heard of, or read about, Martin Luther King, Jesse Jackson, Oscar Romero, Roman Catholic Archbishop of El Salvador, and Desmond Tutu? What about Bolanle Gbonigi (who was nicknamed NADECO Bishop by Babangida and Abacha, the Military Juntas)? Did these great servants of God not mix religion with politics for the liberation of the masses?

It's a shame that the era when mainline churches in Nigeria were led by erudite scholars and theologians e.g. Bishops Anthony Saliu Sanusi (Roman Catholic), Bolaji Idowu (Methodist), Akin Omoyajowo (Anglican) et al. had gone. What we currently have is a bunch of idiots like Ephraim Ademowo, the Anglican Bishop of Lagos who earned his MA and PhD degrees from OAU Ile-Ife by proxy and others (e.g. Peter Akinola, the serial shagger, and Nicholas Orogodo Okoh, the serial smoker) parading  honoris causa (Latin: "for the sake of the honour"  DDs and  the likes of Bishops Solomon Amusan and Alex Ibezim answering the title Drs because they hold worthless American professional doctorate known as DMin (http://thecuttingtruth.xanga.com/615785414/item/).  Any wonder these idiots are replicating themselves by establishing Crowther Graduate Theological Seminary, Abeokuta (http://crowthergraduateseminary.org/administration), where cheap, worthless and unaccredited theological degrees (which cannot be accepted for employment outside the church or considered satisfactory for pursuing further studies in places like UI, OAU, UNILAG, etc) are awarded to unsuspecting Anglican clerics?

I have noticed that, quite unlike the trend in Western Europe and North America where universities established by Christian missions do have Departments and Schools of Theology & Religious Studies in addition to other academic departments, Nigerian Universities privately founded and funded by some Christian Missions particularly the RCCG (http://www.run.edu.ng/coh_departments.html) and Winners (http://www.covenantuniversity.edu.ng/Colleges and http://landmarkuniversity.edu.ng/colleges) do not have offer Theology and Religious Studies. What stops the proprietors of these churches and universities, i.e. Adejare Adeboye and David Oyedepo from incorporating Theology & Religious Studies programmes into the curricula of these universities.  Apart from redundant question like what's the value of a degree in Theology/Yoruba/Igbo, Drama?, what could be reason why these unis fail to offer courses and degrees in Theology and Religious Studies. Isn't this a paradox?

It's clearly a delusion if people think Nigeria education, as it stands, is anything to write home about. Safe for individuals who are determined to make it academicall and hence go the extra mile, the majority of Nigerian certificates are not worth the paper they're written on.
