Nigerian couple tried to claim £3.8m in ‘eye watering’ benefits scam using 1,400 identities * Adeola Thomas, 38, assisted by his partner, Abimbola Abiola, 34, secured £87,000 from fraudulent claims totalling £3.8million over four years * Thomas used 1,400 stolen identities to complete 2,495 handwritten tax and benefits claims forms * HMRC suspicions were raised when he used the same address for all the claims * Thomas, an illegal immigrant, was jailed for seven years while Abiola, also a Nigerian national with leave to remain in the UK, received two-and-a-half years A Nigerian couple who tried to claim £3.8million in an ‘eye-watering’ benefits scam using 1,400 stolen identities have been jailed for a total of almost 10 years. Adeola Thomas, 38, assisted by his partner, Abimbola Abiola, 34, managed to pocket £87,000 after submitting almost 2,500 handwritten applications for tax credits and benefits. The pair spent the money on designer clothing and electrical items including a 50-inch plasma television. https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2012/09/28/article-2210157-1541172B000005DC-535_306x423.jpg https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2012/09/28/article-2210157-1541170C000005DC-340_306x423.jpg Adeola Thomas, left (http://www.facebook.com/adeola.thomas.9), was jailed for seven years while his accomplice Abimbola Abiola, right, was locked up for two-and-a-half years for charges relating to identity theft, tax and benefits fraud But the fraud was discovered when benefits staff noticed the same address was being used for multiple claims, Snaresbrook Crown Court heard. Thomas, an illegal immigrant, was jailed for seven years while Abiola, also a Nigerian national with leave to remain in the UK, received two-and-a-half years. Passing sentence, Judge William Kennedy said: ‘This was no less than a criminal industry, with simple and eye watering criminality designed to maximise the loss to the public. ‘It was a difficult investigation carried out with skill and tenacity. ‘The largest single joint conspiracy [of its kind] for these departments and the actual loss was kept down because of the work of both departments.’ Judge Kennedy also indicated that both Thomas and Abiola should be deported at the end of their prison terms. The pair, who carried out the scam between January 3, 2007 and October 7, 2011, tried to claim £827,000 from HMRC, securing £43,000. They also claimed £3 million from the Department of Work and Pensions and received £44,000. With Abiola’s help, Thomas used stolen personal details to complete 2,495 handwritten application forms, which were sent to the appropriate departments for processing. https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2012/09/28/article-2210157-15411724000005DC-423_634x436.jpg When the claims were successful, the pair withdrew cash from acquaintances' bank accounts or from bogus post office accounts that Thomas, pictured, had set up It is believed that others unknown to investigators, also provided postal addresses and assisted with correspondence. When the claims were successful, the pair withdrew cash from acquaintances' bank accounts or from bogus post office accounts that Thomas, who masterminded the scam, had set up. As well as analysing tax credit records, computer systems, hand written application forms and bank account details and listening to hours of recorded phones calls to the Tax Credit Helpline, HMRC investigators viewed CCTV footage showing activity outside various North London Post Office ATMs and carried out surveillance on Thomas. He was arrested outside a cash point at Upper Clacton Post Office in Hackney, east London last October 7 where he was found to be in possession of 17 Post Office accounts. https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2012/09/28/article-2210157-15411717000005DC-876_306x423.jpg https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2012/09/28/article-2210157-15411713000005DC-980_306x423.jpg Thomas, pictured, was arrested outside a cash point at Upper Clacton Post Office in Hackney, east London last October where he was found to be in possession of 17 Post Office accounts He also had two mobile phones and two fraudulently completed application forms addressed to Job Centre Plus. Abiola, a mother-of-one, was caught on the same day with £4,125 cash in her handbag, which she claimed was child benefit payment. Thomas, of Hackney, east London, admitted three counts of conspiracy to defraud and money laundering. Abiola, of the same address was found guilty of four counts of conspiracy to defraud, money laundering and possession of criminal property following a trial at the court in August. I honestly wished they are put in a jail and the keys deposited in the Atlantic. |
May we safely infer that through your marriage to this white girl/woman, you have, like several other immigrants, indefinitely settled yourself in the white man's land? |
frosbel: You may know religion more than us ,but you will never know our God and saviour Jesus Christ more than us. One is mental and the other is from the heart. You're right because God/Christ only exists in your imagination/mind/heart. Intellectually speaking, religious beliefs eternally remain unverifiable propositions. Stop deluding yourself, Mr God Delusion! |
onatisii: A 47-year-old Nigerian man has been arrested and charged as a result of his alleged ingestion of 65 pellets containing approximately one kilogram of heroin...Ogbonu...gave written consent to be taken to a medical facility for an x-ray, which allegedly revealed multiple pellets containing an unknown substance completely filling his stomach and intestines. He later expelled a pellet, the contents of which field tested positive for the presence of heroin....Ogbonu...was medically discharged...A criminal complaint is a formal accusation of criminal conduct, not evidence. A defendant is presumed innocent unless convicted through due process of law.First and foremost, this is an EXCELLENT reporting! I sincerely do hope that the new crop of Nigerian journalists would learn something from this! When one thinks of the recent case of Ms Johnson and the LATSMA official, it is crucially important that Nigerian journalists learn to separate facts from fiction by thoroughly sieving through narratives with a view to differentiating between allegations and forensically proven incidents and legally determined cases. Secondly, this is another case of a Nigerian putting other Nigerians (at home and abroad) to shame. Whilst I do not support capital punishment or death penalty, I advocate that he and his cohorts in trade should be sent down and the keys deposited in the Atlantic. |

Jakumo: A good lawyer will establish that the motorist ran over that individual either out of fear that the road-block had been set up by robbers, as a result of mechanical failure in the speeding vehicle's brakes and or steering, or due to instinctual evasive driving caused by the sudden appearance of an unexpected road-block erected at an unsafe location. One of the very FEW sensible, clearly articulated and matured views on NL which addressed an aspect of the motoring problems in Lagos! As an aside, running over the LATSMA staff "as a result of mechanical failure in the speeding vehicle's brakes and or steering" wouldn't pass any forensic examinations, though. |
Billyonaire: They have not explained to us how he tried to defraud the bank of $9,000 using a fake passport. I am not holding brief for the offender but I have been thinking of this. This young man may have traveled to Malaysia using fake passport. Might be more of Identity theft than fraud. In any case, he wont get justice. Malaysians hate Nigerians. All nations hate Nigerians. |
gistme24: Wish the UK govt can step in, as usual, as I don't wanna watch another made in 9ja style corruption case series...UK sentencing seems too soft...his jail term would be pretty much over in a twinkle of an eye. Therefore, I wish the US government can step in...give him 99 years jail term and dump the key give in the same spot where Bin Laden was baptised - in the deep oceans. |
Stanley Divine: @Patsey.. I don't intend to hold brief 4 xtians but 2 point out an erroneous assumption by both u n Gandhi dat evry churchgoer is a xtian. Dat is a fallacy of hasty generalization.Christians are supposed to be "Christ-like", right? Do you think in your mind that if the most lettered person came to Jesus, irrespective of his/her ulterior motive, Jesus will send such person(s) packing? Secondly, the church, in theological terms, is not the building but the body of Christ, and to quote the hymn-poet: "In Christ there is no East or West, In Him no South or North; But one great fellowship of love, Throughout the whole wide earth." In view of this, and in view of my earlier question, also in view of the fact that Christ, as Christians claim, died for all (irrespective of their class, gender, sexuality and race) do you think any church (the body of Christ) should be out of bounds for any category, class or caste of people? Any difference between this and a Baptist congregation in America which , even in the 21st century CE, refused to marry a black couple on the account that, since its inception, no black couple had ever been allowed to tie knot in that church building? Am simply amazed at you playing a devil's advocate in this matter. |
Gandhi Rejected by Christians Mahatma Gandhi, the renowned leader of the people of India, in seeking to overthrow British colonial rule of his native land, was an avid reader. Although a Hindu, in his quest for freedom, he read the four Christian Gospels. He wanted to know more about Jesus of Nazareth. In his reading of the Gospels, Gandhi was impressed with this man whom Christians worship and follow. Where could he find out more about this Jesus whom Christians refer to as "the Christ - the Messiah?" One Sunday morning Gandhi decided that he would visit one of the Christian churches in Calcutta. Upon seeking entrance to the church sanctuary, he was stopped at the door by the ushers. The ushers told him that he was not welcome, nor would he be permitted to attend this particular church as it was for 'high caste' Indians and 'whites' only. He was neither 'high caste', nor was he British. Because of the rejection by this church, 'the Mahatma' turned his back on Christianity. With this act, Gandhi rejected the Christian faith, never again to consider the claims of Christ! He was 'turned-off' by the sin of segregation that was practiced by the church. Gandhi later declared, "I'd be a Christian if it were not for the Christians!" "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ" ~ Mahatma Gandhi SOURCE: http://christiangays.com/articles/gandhi.shtml In various, varied and variegated ways, Christians remain the sole hindrance for million others to become Christians. No sermonising and such gibberish as "every individual shall stand before the judgement throne!" Let's talk sense, views that can withstand intellectual scrutiny, shall we? |
Goshen360: My brother, it doesn't have to make sense or any intellectual scrutiny. It doesn't make sense when God instructed Noah to build such ark in a warning towards the coming flood because such had never happened in the past for Noah to learn from. It doesn't make sense when Abraham was told to sacrifice his son but he obeyed anyway. It doesn't make sense for a sea to part but same sea drown the enemies of God. God uses the foolish things to answer the wise man at times. And you have a new specie being discovered and it's still not verifiable?Nigerians never cease to amaze me. If you believe in these Ancient Near Eastern mythologies and folklores, then you are in the same boat as my great, great, great grandparents who, in ages past, not only believed that Ogun (the God of Iron in Yoruba pantheon), using his cutlass – made of iron – cleared the pathway from heaven to earth, enabling other gods (Obatala, Oshun, Oya, Yemoja and Sango, etc) to make their legendary first trip from heaven (wherever that is) to this planet earth, but also held that Obatala is the drunk and disorderly Creator of the Human Race. Again, if indeed the flood narrative were to be true, where are the remains of that generation of people who, on this planet earth, allegedly perished as a result of the deluge? Discarding the Chinese—Turkish purported find on Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey, adjudged to be a scam, where are the remnants of the Noah’s Ark? The Red Sea parting way for the Israelites? Here we go, again. Have you ever heard about the Sea of Reeds or mirage? Has any such thing ever happened in history apart from this folkloric narrative? If Abraham’s expected sacrifice of Isaac were to be a true-to-life story (of course, it isn't but a folklore), it's reprehensible you're serving a blood-thirsty God who demands that his/her adherents sacrifice their only son as if slaughtering a lamb. |
This woman has one more feat to accomplish: reconciling her first child with her biological father. Her poor daughter, under Article 7 of the UNCRC, has a right to know her biological father. "I met this guy in 2001 when I was writing WAEC, his name is GuyA. We fell in love. He was...God fearing...I had a fling with...GuyB...I made a smart move by telling GuyA that I was pregnant for him...Of course, he believed me because he trusted me so much..." The moral of the story is: GuyA, the God-fearing (and probably the born-again Campus Fellowship Leader) was bleeping and sha-gging this girl...call it fornication. The wages of sin? Raising another man's child! Arguably, THE NIGERIAN GOD. ![]() |
Goshen360: An Atheists questioned me on the existence of our God at a time and asked a question that I had to re-visit some issues in the Bible. Alas, the word of God is 100% truth unless you don't know. I was questioned in the past about how possible it was for ALL specie of animals to fit into the Noah's ark considering the size of the ark, as a way to disclaim the Bible. This made me to re-visit the topic. While I was at it, the Spirit of God spoke that, "do you think it's all the species of animal in this present age that was present and put in the ark of Noah? I simply answered, I don't know and that is why am researching again.ABSOLUTE RUBBISH. "[The Spirit of God said" forever remains unverifiable proposition and therefore illusory. The thing is, these spineless gibberish can't stand the most compassionate intellectual scrutiny. |
skerries: What this thives don't uderstand is that they are secondhand citizens outside Nigeria.know matter how much you deposited in European bank you will never be an European or a white man. you will always be a nigger and will be treated as monkey. They should read the history of colonization before siphoning out GOD gift resources into Europe. You'll need to listen to our politicians when debating in the Upper and Lower Chambers or when responding to questions from journalists; gauge their IQ; and, you'll realise that even the so-called university graduates and PhDers amongst them (including GEJ and his wife) are intellectually disabled. Intellectual disability, therefore, prevents Nigerian politicians from learning not only from African colonial history, but also from the post-colonial history of Africa. Nigerian Security Agents should have seized his travelling documents and ban him from foreign trips; made him to report, in person, to a designated police station at regular intervals; and put him under surveillance until he's cleared or convicted of the bribery allegation. |

WE NEED A "NAME AND SHAME" SECTION ON NAIRALAND, PARTICULARLY NIGERIANS BRINGING US SHAME IN THE DIASPORA. Two conmen jailed over £300,000 ID fraud scam Two fraudsters who tried to swindle millions of pounds by using 700 stolen identities have been jailed for a combined total of nearly six years. Gbenga Abimbola and Samuel Abioje created names from stolen passports and credit cards, a court heard. They then opened a string of bank accounts with the fake IDs and claimed £6million in tax benefits. Abimbola, 32, also invented dozens of bogus businesses so fake VAT refunds could go straight to their accounts. The fraudsters managed to swindle more than £300,000 before they were stopped. Police believe the ringleaders – one of them named Aare Akintola – are still at large. The pair met after arriving in London on student visas from Nigeria in 2005 and 2006 – while the operation was up and running, Woolwich Crown Court was told. Abimbola then passed on hundreds of stolen identities to Abioje, 23, who set up the bank accounts. Both men were arrested following a tip-off. Abioje, of Warlingham in Surrey, denied fraud but was convicted of conspiring to obtain tax credits and jailed for 21 months. Abimbola, of Lewisham in south-east London, admitted two tax offences and was jailed for four years. Judge Peter Murphy told them: 'The losses sustained by the public purse were substantial enough. If all the claims had been successful, the potential for loss would have been great.' The judge recommended both men be deported when their jail term ended.
