Now it has spread all over S/West I heard it's these oil cabals that are causing the artificial scarcity. FG have given these people too much power. They manipulate the country's economy when they feel like. Posing to even be bigger than the FG |

Politics › 20 Students Receive Gani Fawehinmi Scholarship Awards by PaulJohn1(op): 9:24am On Sep 15, 2012 |
Gani Fawehinmi Scholarship Awards sponsors 20 indigent undergraduates through school. A total of 20 undergraduates selected from tertiary institutions across the country, Friday, received this year’s Gani Fawehinmi Scholarship Awards for indigent students, in Lagos.
The annual awards, which began in 1973, have empowered about 800 students, according to the scholarship’s Awards Board. In his speech, Dipo Fashina, chairman of the board, stated that the number of recipients was reviewed up from 12 last year because there were thousands of indigent students.
“When we discussed with Chief (Gani Fawehinmi), he was concerned about Nigerian children who were very brilliant but indigent,” Mr. Fashina, a former president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, said. “There was another thing Chief was concerned about, the disparities in the distribution of education in Nigeria.
That there must be a reflection of the fact that there are bright students all over Nigeria,” Mr. Fashina added. Earlier, while delivering a lecture titled ‘After Education, What Next?’, Festus Iyayi noted that the nation’s education system lies “in chaos.”
“We can provide hundreds of examples of this chaos at all levels of the formal and informal educational process,” Mr. Iyayi, a professor at the Department of Business Administration, University of Benin, said. “The disgrace in the formal system not only exists at the secondary school level but at the primary and tertiary levels as well,” he said.
“Elements of the chaos can be found in a variety of practices and outcomes at each of these levels.” In his opening remarks, ASUU President, Nassiru Isa, stated that the union has continuously participated in activities relating with Mr. Fawehinmi. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/100224-20-students-receive-gani-fawehinmi-scholarship-awards.html |
Politics › North Should Not Contest Presidency Till 2019 - Northern Women by PaulJohn1(op): 7:02pm On Sep 14, 2012 |
A women group in the North has told northerners eyeing the 2015 presidential election to wait till 2019.
The group, under the aegis of Northern Nigeria Women Peace Forum, also berated former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Ghali Na’aba, who reportedly said Jonathan should not contest the 2015 presidential poll.
The Coordinator of NNWPF, Binta Kuraye, who spoke with reporters in Abuja on Thursday, said if Jonathan’s predecessors spent eight years in office, his case should not be different.
She said, “Northern leaders, who intend to run for the office of President in 2015 should wait and not overheat the polity because Jonathan is still interested in moving the country forward.
“There is a need to improve the power sector, create more jobs for our teeming youths and develop the rail transport system which is the cheapest means of transport, particularly in the North. Our leaders from the North should join hands with the Federal Government to solve the security problem in the North and other parts of Nigeria.
“Jonathan has not marginalised the North in any way. He has tried to carry the North along in every aspect and what we need to do is to encourage him and give peace a chance.”
According to her, women should forget about contesting the 2015 presidential election because “it is not realisable”.
Kuraye said, “Female presidency is not realisable in 2015 because there is no vacancy. There will only be vacancy after Jonathan must has completed his next four-year tenure, and that will be as from 2019.”
The group accused Na’aba of discrediting Jonathan, “despite all his achievements.”
Kuraye said, “It is important to inform Na’aba and his cohorts that power belongs to God and no man or woman has the power to determine who the power (Presidency) should belong to.
It is only God that knows who the cap fits. Desecration of the office of President shall not help anymore. It is better for Na’aba and the northern leaders to join hands with the President to provide dividends of democracy.”

SMH for our politicains(always blaming the past administration for their own present failures) Man wise up, learn from the past. Remember how issues like that of Faruk, Ibori etc.. Were thrown under carpet, if not for international bodies that took that of Ibori up, I'm sure he'll still be a free man and a guy to reckon with in PDP government. Aregbe doesn't have to rush to judge or criticize the default of the past administration. If he had taken it up immediately he came in, he wouldn't have known the detail behind this and might even turn out to be used against him. The question you should ask is, "why didn't he call on the EFCC to intervain in this matter?" He knows this so called "crime commition(EFCC)" that is always been used by the ruling party to manipulate rising issues, will do the same. |
Politics › Obasanjo - PDP Faces Extinction In Lagos by PaulJohn1(op): 7:37am On Sep 14, 2012 |
A former Nigeria President, Olusegun Obasanjo, on Thursday called for peace among the rank and file of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State. He said if party members failed to reconcile, the party might go into extinction in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the former president made the appeal at a Joint Annual General Assembly of the Lagos PDP Women and Youth Vanguard. Represented by Jide Damazio, the PDP zonal Secretary, South-West, Mr. Obasanjo said there was need for true reconciliation in the party in the state.
“I urge you to strive to identify yourselves with how to bring peace to Lagos PDP. “If we don’t forget our animosity and work as one, we may be swept away,’’ he said. “You must all strive to ensure reconciliation among warring factions in the rank and file of the party in Lagos,” he added.
Mr. Obasanjo, however, urged the youth and women to beware of the opposition planting the seed of discord in the party. According to him, you must all reach out to the gladiators of the party in the state to work for the uplifting of the party. Mr Olalere Gbadamosi, a 2011 governorship aspirant of the party, stressed the need for the members to work as one to wrest power in the state.
The Chief Adviser of the Youth Vanguard and 2011 governorship aspirant of the Lagos PDP, Mr Salis Owolabi, appealed to chieftains of the party to come together and work for the party’s victory in the 2015 polls. “The youth vanguard programme is designed to bring unity to the party but you know that in any dispute, there are diehards who will never agree to anything,” he said.
Mr Sheriff Adepoju, the President of the Lagos PDP Youth Vanguard, said the youth would move to their leaders in thousands to ensure that there was reconciliation. He said that for the party to remain relevant in Lagos, the leaders should sheathe their swords and be good crisis managers. Mr.Adepoju attributed the rancour in the party to arrogance, dichotomy and selfishness in some leaders.
The president of the Lagos PDP Youth Vanguard said the outfit did not belong to any faction but was formed to complement the efforts of the party structure in the state. NAN

Politics › PHCN To Publish Debtors’ Names In National Dailies by PaulJohn1(op): 9:39pm On Sep 13, 2012 |
PHCN will not hesitate to drag its debtors to the press. The Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, will soon publish names of its debtors in national dailies if they fail to pay their debts amounting to N16 billion. The Managing Director of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, Idris Mohammed, said this during the First Customers Consultative Council meeting on Wednesday in Kaduna.
Mr. Mohammed said electricity consumers owe the company huge debts despite all efforts to ensure regular and effective debt collection. He said the present debt profile was inimical to the company’s corporate survival. He urged consumers to settle their electricity bills to ensure good service delivery at all times.
The Kaduna electricity boss said more than 50,000 pre-paid meters had been distributed to customers in Kaduna metropolis, Samaru, and Zaria Business Units. He said more than 3,500 special pre-paid meters had been deployed to Sokoto State to cater for both Gwiwa and Marina Business Units under the Federal Government’s Pilot Programme.
“This special Federal Government project will promote customer satisfaction and revenue improvement,” the managing director said. He said that the company would soon send prepaid meters to Zamfara, Katsina, Kebbi and other states to guarantee accurate billing of customers.
The initiative is expected to help reduce friction between customers and marketers, which often resulted to disconnection. According to him, the company has purchased more than 50 transformers to replace ageing ones, while some injection sub-stations have been completed.
The Zonal Chairman of the Customers Consultative Council, Linus Alhassan, urged various communities to set up monitoring teams to guard PHCN installations. He said the activities of vandals had continued to increase daily.
Mr. Alhassan noted that there was a dearth of PHCN equipment in the store, which had made replacement of stolen ones difficult, saying adequate security of PHCN cables and other materials would enable customers enjoy adequate power supply.
A customer from Kano Business Unit, Umar Muhammed, commended the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company for engaging electricity consumers through the Customers Consultative Council meeting. He expressed the hope that the steps taken by the company would improve power generation across the zone.

PhysicsQED: Did I say you composed it yourself? No. That's not the point. Whoever composed it provided no supporting evidence whatsoever.
I'm not "pretending" that I didn't see something. The claim was seen and found wanting. I insist that the claim is the result of someone's assumptions and not any actual fact-finding work, otherwise those making the claim would have actually attempted to provide even a modicum of supporting evidence.
If talking about this claim is "going off topic" then you already went "off topic" the minute you first brought it up. I wouldn't let such a silly and ridiculous assertion stand unchallenged just out of fear of going off topic. Of course you can say it's someone's assumption. Aren't all post referring to a link here on NL also someone's assumption or opinion? May be you're a type that doubt the credibility of any post when it's not what you expected, well I don't have a problem with that since it's just you. I didn't mean to go off topic at first, I was only questioning the OP that "is education not basis of civilization". When you term a set of people civilized with poor educational bar ground, then your assertion is questionable. Again, I'm not from that state, it's just the fact that I know about them that I'm sharing. Peace Mind sharing your home state to even know where she's ranked |

PhysicsQED: You were actually serious!
What a joker! You post a list mentioning seven prominent Ekiti professors and you start believing such a ridiculous claim.
There's not even any evidence that Ekiti has the highest number of professors and doctors per capita, not to talk of having the highest number of professors and doctors outright, which is extremely unlikely. Whoever wrote that article claiming that Ekiti had more professors than the whole south south needs to go back to school to develop basic reasoning skills and learn how to carry out basic research. Oh! I didn't compose it myself http://www.lawnigeria.com/Ekiti/Ekiti.htmlhttp://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ekiti_StateAnd don't pretend you didn't see where it was stated that the state has the highest number of profs. I read an article about Ekiti having more professors than the whole profs they've gotten in S/South, can't find that now. You can't just take away the fact that they have the highest numbers of profs and doctors in Nigeria, followed by either Ogun or Ondo(those people sabi read, I respect them for that). |
