Politics › Cross River Dethrones Calabar Paramount Ruler by PaulJohn1(op): 10:35am On Sep 23, 2012
Calabar — EMBATTLED paramount ruler of Efuts in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State, Muri Munene Effiong Mbukpa, was, on Friday afternoon, removed from the throne following a fresh selection of a new monarch, Prof. Itam Hogan Itam, as allegedly approved by the state government.

But, in a swift reaction, Mbukpa said that he remained the paramount ruler, describing the alleged selection as a nullity and out of the tradition of the Efut land. Besides, the Efuts Combined Assembly, which claimed that, by the traditional of the Efuts, it was the assembly that has the right to conduct any selection of any Muri Munene said that there was no vacancy in the first place for anybody to contemplate filling any position.

Secretary of the assembly, Ndabo Godwin Bassey, explained that the Mbukpa had been on the throne for about four years now and was recognized by Governor liyel Imoke on many occasions, adding that when the governor visited the palace during his electioneering campaign, he commended the Munene for maintain the peace in the area.

He said that Mbukpa had performed all the traditional rites to mount the throne and that, according to the tradition of the Efuts, whoever performs the burial rites of the late monarch automatically takes over and that the rites had been done many years ago except otherwise somebody wants to exhume the corpse.

According to him, "The only people who are qualified traditionally to vote or be voted for in the purported selection were the three Muris that did not come, the other five are not qualified and there has never been a time they are up to five that are qualified.

"The two other persons there are challenging their suspension by the late Muri Munene in court and the court has pronounced that they cannot partake in any thing on selection. To start with, there is no vacancy there. It is the duty of the Efuts Combined Assembly to conduct selection where there is a vacancy.

"It is also the conclave of qualified accredited Muris of the ancestral clans that select Munene, this one was conducted by government, there has never been any place in the world where government conducts the selection of the traditional ruler."

The Cross River State government had, in a letter dated September 18, 2012, entitled, "Filling of the vacant stool of Muri Munene of the Efuts," signed by the Special Adviser to Governor Liyel Imoke on Chieftaincy Affairs 'Hon. John Eyikwaje' directed that the purported vacant position of the Muri Munene be filled.

The letter, addressed to the embattled monarch and seven other contestants, read: "Please be informed that His Excellency, the governor of Cross River State, Senator Liyel Imoke, has given approval for the filing of the vacant stool of Muri Munene of the Efuts in Calabar South Local Government Area."

Some Efuts indigenes claimed that the selection traditionally should be conducted at the palace of the Muri Munene but it was gathered that it did not take place there as the palace for several months now had been under lock and key following the attack on Mbukpa by people suspected to be area boys who were allegedly hired by the opposition to take the place by force.

It was gathered that the alleged filling of the vacant stool took place at the Calabar South Council secretariat instead of the palace and was supervised by the Secretary of Chieftaincy Affairs, Calabar South Local government Area, Charles Obo, under the watchful eyes of the Special Adviser to the Governor and the Chairman of Calabar South, Hon. Ekeng Henshaw.

Politics › The Yoruba Risorgimento by PaulJohn1(op): 9:41am On Sep 20, 2012
There seems to be a resurgence of a new kind of nationalism on the political landscape of the Yoruba of south-western Nigeria. A number of meetings, conferences, scenario-building and subterranean and overt activities of the region's elite should give the nation's leaders some cause to reflect and perhaps react.

Earlier this year, the governors of the six states of the region, joined by the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) governor of Edo, Adams Oshiomhole, drew a template for regional economic integration. The penultimate meeting in Ibadan convened by civil war veteran Gen. Alani Akinrinade introduced a curious dimension with its call for the fundamental restructuring of the Nigerian state, where each region would have a quasi-autonomous status.

Unlike the other regions, the people enjoy a long history of nationalism. Drawing on elements from local mythologies, traditions and cultural values, the Yoruba educated elite have established a common interest which is the basis for the people's imagination of the nation.

Transformed from pre-colonial group identity to a cultural phenomenon during colonial times, Yoruba nationalism has increasingly radicalised, at times violently, during the post-colonial period. Now, Yoruba nationalism seems directed against the Nigerian nation-state and other ethnic groups in Nigeria, hence the worrying dimension to calls by its leaders for regional integration and the fear of national disintegration.

We wonder what kind of arrangement that would be, given that Edo, Kwara and Kogi states where some Yoruba hail from are outside of the south-west arrangement of the late and immediate post-colonial Nigeria. Though the conveners argued that the Yoruba are "federalists" in their political evolution, the aspect of "independence" owing to marginalisation by the Nigerian state does not seem congruent with their stance on how to strengthen the Nigerian union and make it more productive.

We think it tends to heighten the disunity into our diversities. Indeed, it is not right to say that the people of the south-west have been short-changed more than the other regions on political leadership plain. Short of the watershed of June 12, 1993, the Yoruba have been fairly compensated in terms of appointments, elections and participation in the Nigerian project.

Perhaps the most disturbing of the Ibadan Yoruba Assembly's communiqué is the suggestion that vigilantes should hold a pride of place in the region's security architecture. This suggests impatience with the present debate over the Nigeria Police. Vigilantes are no substitute to a decentralised police.

Even with the glaring challenges of insecurity, they must know that they risk the putative reign of ultra-nationalist militias. We do not appreciate this Yugoslavian recipe. Naturally, the imbalances in the Nigeria enterprise call for concern, but pandering to ethnic sentiments would worsen the state of affairs.

Couldn't say better.
The fact that only SW protested doesn't mean the protect was sponsored.
Lagosians "don't give a damn about whatever trash he says".
They didn't inform anyone, but went ahead to make that senseless move on the first day of the year. People have spent all they've gotten on Christmas celebration and new year eve. Entering a new year with expectation of working and getting your cash, he and his cabinet brought in the fuel subsidy palava, and you're expecting people to be mute.
If other regions can keep quiet on actions that won't favor the common man, that doesn't mean the SW should follow their dumb act.
If not for the protest that took place in Ojota(Lagos) with over a million people, and that of Lekki which is of rich people capable of buying the fuel at any amount but came out to protest, I can bet with anyone that petrol would have been sold for not less than N160 in Nigeria today.
It was this move from the SW that save the common man from other regions to still be able to purchase fuel at a price as much as N97 and not even more.

He's used to blaming opposition of any slight issue that arises which are mainly westerners. undecided
Can't he learn from how his drunken master OBJ addresses issues when he was in office? The only think that he has not blamed his self made opposition(westerners) of is Boko Haram issue.

He is meant to be a civilian president, don't know where he has gotten his idea from of using military officers on civilians, like he did in Lagos during the protest.
Why can he do the same by wiping an entire community off where boko haram are suspected to be, but he said they're his people. When a suicide bomber is you people and protesting civilians are your enemies, I think something is wrong.

This man better get organised and stop putting blames on people/Opposition
Christianity Etc › New Methodist Chapel To Be Built In Birth Place Of Christianity In Nigeria by PaulJohn1(op): 8:56am On Sep 18, 2012
The 170 year old church says it will build a cathedral at a site in Badagry “where Christianity was first preached in Nigeria.”

The Methodist Church of Nigeria will celebrate 170 years of Christianity in Nigeria with the foundation laying ceremony of the Badagry Tourist Chapel on September 24.

The Bishop of Badagry Diocese, Emmanuel Ahisu, said on Monday in Badagry that Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State would perform the foundation laying ceremony.

Mr. Ahisu said that arrangements are being made for the historic event to commemorate how Christianity came to Nigeria through Badagry.

The chapel will be built at the site of Agia Tree Monument in Badagry, where Christianity was first preached in Nigeria. As history has it, Christianity was first preached in Badagry on September 24, 1842, by Thomas Birch Freeman of Wesley Mission (now Methodist Church).

The Agia Tree was uprooted by a heavy rain storm at exactly 11.45 p.m. on June 20, 1959. Mr. Ahisu, however, said that as part of the anniversary, an inter-denominational service would hold at Freeman Memorial Methodist Cathedral.

“We are also converging on Shagamu for the inter–zonal football competition, while the U-21 female and U-17 boys and relay race would take place at Gate Way International Stadium,’’ he said.

Mr. Ahisu said that other activities lined up for the celebration include an evangelical service at Melon Memorial Methodist Cathedral, Shagamu in Ogun.
