PoliticsLagos Hopeful Of $3bn Private Funding For 4th Mainland Bridge – PPP Boss by PDPGuy(op): 6:47am On Oct 09, 2022
Ope George, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), has revealed that the state government is expecting about $2.5 to $3 billion of private sector funding investment for the fourth (4th) Mainland Bridge.

George made the disclosure during a recent press briefing on the activities of his agency, maintaining that at the centre of each of the PPP projects is the need for residents to get value for money. He equally disclosed that the preferred bidder for the 4th Mainland Bridge project will be announced before year-end.

George stated that the state government would keep improving on its PPP projects to ensure that the state and its residents continue to get value for money invested by the state for such projects and the residents for money paid for such service.

PoliticsFG, Afreximbank Sign Agreement For N375 Billion Medical Centre by PDPGuy(op): 4:07pm On Oct 08, 2022
African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and the Federal Government have signed the Host Country Agreement for the first African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) currently under construction in Abuja.

Professor Benedict Oramah, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Afreximbank and Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, Minister of Foreign Affairs signed the agreement in presence of the Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Alhaji Lai Mohammed; Hon Joseph Nkama, Minister of State for Health; Dr George Elombi, Afreximbank Executive Vice President, Corporate Governance and Legal Services, and Mrs Kanayo Awani, Afreximbank Executive Vice President, Intra-African Trade Bank, as well as other members of the management team of the Bank and the AMCE.

Afreximbank said the signing of the Host Country Agreement builds up on the recent ground-breaking for the AMCE project, in December 2021, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Prof Benedict Oramah, President and Chairman of the Board of Afreximbank, said: “The AMCE Abuja is a first of its kind quaternary level medical facility in the West Africa region and one amongst the very few, if any, on the African continent.

“The AMCE will promote Intra African Trade medical tourism by offering a full spectrum of services in oncology, haematology, cardiology, and general healthcare across the continent, in addition to training, research and development capabilities. The AMCE Abuja will serve as the headquarters for other AMCEs to be launched across Africa.

“The initial capital outlay for the first phase of the AMCE Abuja is projected at US$300 million. The investment is expected to rise to about US$750 million, upon full development, making the facility by a significant distance the single largest private healthcare investment in Nigeria and Africa in general.

“The success of the AMCE Abuja will pave the way for attracting future investments and partnership arrangements within the health sector on the continent. It will also raise the local standards of healthcare delivery as well as provide a blueprint for quality of services required to address Nigeria and Africa’s healthcare and related challenges.”

Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama, Minister of Foreign Affairs said: “I know how difficult it is for a country to get host status for a project or institution that everyone is looking for. Today, with all the health challenges facing the world, every country is looking to host an international health institution. I thank Afreximbank for bringing this institution to Nigeria as a host.

“The research and development aspect of the project is very important. It is not just a turnkey hospital that is being set up in Nigeria, the African Medical Centre of Excellence will be a research institution, which is vitally important because that is the only way to have sustainable and comprehensive medical facilities and treatment.

“The AMCE really ticks all the boxes, because when we do not invest in research and development, we end up with situations where neglected tropical diseases we have on the continent do not have proper treatments because industrialized countries that invest in research and development prioritize the diseases that affect their citizens the most, as do pharmaceutical companies.”

The Lekki airport total area will be 1.7x the size of JFK airport, and 2.8x the size of Heathrow airport.

Surely, the initial passenger capacity won’t remain at 5 million for long

OasisX:
FLASH: Approval has been given for Lagos State to construct a new international airport on a PPP basis in Lekki-Epe. Construction begins 2023 for a project that has capacity to handle 5 million passengers annually and reduce the need for islanders to visit mainland for airport.

- OvieNews
I applaud this! I’ve been waiting for the LASG to embark on this project forever lol.

I can bet that the major foreign airlines would also want to use the airport because it will definitely have better, 21st century facilities when compared to MMIA. It will be the first airport in Naija to be designed to accommodate the A380, and the first phase, alone, will cost $400 million (or more when you factor in the current inflation)

Now, I know some would ask if the Lagos economy can support the existence of two international airports. The answer is yes, in the next 4-5 years and also because Lagos’s GDP was $75.9 billion last year (its GDP per PPP measure would probably be around $100 billion).

PoliticsNigeria Air: Over 20,000 Job Applications Received by PDPGuy(op): 8:02pm On Oct 04, 2022
The management of Nigeria Air Limited says it has received more than 20,000 applications so far for jobs in the new national carrier.

The airline, which is billed to begin operations this year, commenced the recruitment of qualified crew members and other workers on September 23.

The airline said it was seeking B737 captains, first officers, senior cabin crew and cabin crew, and engineers. The positions are based in Abuja or Lagos.

It said on Tuesday that more than 20,000 applications have already been received.

“Management appreciates the unprecedented level of interest shown by Nigerians in the airline which has resulted in the receipt of over 20,000 applications for positions in the organisation so far, and wish to state that the recruitment process for other positions will begin in due course,” it said in a statement.

The airline warned Nigerians against fake recruitment websites making job offers on behalf of the airline.

“All those concerned are therefore advised to ignore such announcements or invitations, as responding to, or dealing with them in any way, will be at their own risk,” it said in the statement by James Odaudu, special assistant to the aviation minister.

“We wish to inform the general public, especially those who have applied for the earlier officially advertised positions that no recruitment interviews or tests have been scheduled.

“All such announcements or invitations for such should be disregarded as they are the handiwork of fraudsters and scammers,” the statement said.

I'm undecided as to whether a Nigerian airline should buy Chinese planes.
TravelHadi Sirika: Nigeria Air Will Consider China's C919 Planes by PDPGuy(op): 1:01am On Oct 02, 2022
Nigeria would consider buying China's newly certified C919 passenger jet as it grows the country's fledgling carrier Nigeria Air to 30 planes by around 2025, Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika said on Saturday.

Sirika said the new airline would have a mixture of Airbus (AIR.PA) and Boeing (BA.N) planes, but added the carrier is also willing to look at the Chinese narrowbody jet, which Chinese regulators certified on Friday.

"We haven't looked at that C919. But if it's as good as the others then why not," he told Reuters on the sidelines of the United Nation's aviation agency's triennial assembly in Montreal, Canada.

On Friday, China hailed the development of its first medium-haul passenger jet as the embodiment of the country's drive towards self-sufficiency, with safety approval awarded to a plane that aims to challenge Western aircraft giants for orders.

The first C919 aircraft, designed to compete with popular single-aisle models made by Airbus and Boeing, will be delivered by the end of the year, state Xinhua News Agency said.

It remains unclear when the plane might be certified by the United States or Europe, opening the way to sales in most foreign markets, but industry analysts say it will be up to a decade before China can seriously tackle the existing Boeing-Airbus duopoly.

"China and Nigeria (have a) very cordial and friendly relationship with mutual benefits," Sirika said.

For decades, China has loaned billions of dollars to Africa to build railroads, power plants and highways as it deepened ties with the continent while extracting minerals and oil.

Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, is the top importer of Chinese goods, hoovering up $23 billion worth in 2021.

Nigeria's poor transport and power networks have stymied economic growth for decades, holding back the distribution of wealth in Africa's biggest economy where 40% of people live below the national poverty line.

However, the country is growing its aviation sector, where traffic is now above pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels, Sirika said. The airline is one of President Muhammadu Buhari's 2015 election campaign promises.
