Russia 2018: Super Eagles supporters’ club travelling with 1, 000 members

Samuel Ikpea, the National Chairman, Nigeria Football Supporters Club (NFSC), on Thursday said the club would take 1,000 of its members to cheer the Super Eagles at Russia 2018 World Cup.

Mr. Ikpea made the disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos while reviewing the club’s preparations for the World Cup holding from June.

He said the club had set machinery in motion toward ensuring that the supporters club was adequately represented in the quadrennial football fiesta in Russia.

“We are already mobilising our members for the World Cup in Russia. We have sent messages to the 20 registered member states and Abuja to send 50 of their members for the competition.

“We have been in the business of doing that for a very long time now, we also have members outside the country and we are ensuring that wherever they are, they are going to Russia.

“Our Marketing Unit is already saddled with sourcing of funds and the sponsors of our trip to Russia because we are a non-governmental organisation (NGO), so we need to source for the funds.

“I want to assure Nigerians that we have been doing that for the past 62 years when the club was formed and we will not fail this time around,’’ he told NAN.

Mr. Ikpea said that the club had received little support from the Nigeria Football Federation and the Federal Ministry of Sports, adding that this would not derail its programme in Russia.

“We have not have not been able to receive any good support from NFF or the Sports Ministry, since the inception of the new government as against the last administration when we received N50 million.

It’s now four wins in five games for the Falconets in the 2018 qualifying series.
Rasheedat Ajibade has scored 8 goals so far, and is the joint highest goal scorer. She has also scored in every qualifying match.
And the Falconets have now outscored their opponents 17-2.

Birthright citizenship can only be abrogated through a constitutional amendment. A majority of the state legislatures (3/4) would have to approve it, and both houses of Congress approve it, before it gets repealed.

The Nigeria Football Federation has confirmed that a prestige friendly match between the Super Eagles and England’s Three Lions will take place at the Wembley Stadium in London on Saturday, 2nd June 2018.

The match will be only the third between both countries at senior level, and will serve as the Super Eagles’ final preparatory game for the FIFA World Cup finals in Russia, with their first match against Croatia in Kaliningrad coming exactly two weeks after.

NFF 1st Vice President and Chairman of the Federation’s Organizing Committee, Barrister Seyi Akinwunmi, told thenff.com on Tuesday: “The match is now confirmed. We had been doing a lot of work in the background, even going back to last year.

“We have other matches and programs for the team, and we will soon roll out the entire plan for matches, camping sites and training camps.”

The idea of a friendly game between England and Nigeria in the present dispensation was first mooted in 2015, when NFF President Amaju Pinnick met with then Chairman of The FA, Greg Dyke in London. Afterwards, Pinnick and NFF 2nd Vice President/LMC Chairman Shehu Dikko (who is also Chairman of the NFF Marketing, Sponsorship and TV Rights Committee) met with incumbent Chairman of The FA, Greg Clarke, also in London.

One of the promises made by Pinnick at the onset of his administration was that he would actualize a match between the senior teams of Nigeria and England. That has now become a reality - another promise fulfilled.

Organizers hinted thenff.com on Wednesday that they expect a full house at the big game, and that a train of top-drawer dignitaries could include members of the Royal Family.

Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr told thenff.com: “This is good news for myself and the entire team. England is a very strong team presently and I believe they will give us a very good match. We will be able to test our readiness for the World Cup when we meet the Three Lions at Wembley.”

While the Super Eagles play Croatia, Iceland and Argentina in Group D, the Three Lions are up against Belgium, Panama and Tunisia in Group G in Russia.

Nigeria and England first clashed at senior level on 16th November 1994, also at the old Wembley Stadium. David Platt’s headed goal towards the end of the first half separated both teams.

Both teams met again at the 2002 FIFA World Cup. The encounter at the Nagai Stadium in Osaka, Japan on 12th June 2002 ended 0-0, with the Super Eagles being eliminated from the finals at the group stage.

Akinwunmi added: “We decided to be strategic in our choice of opponents for the Super Eagles leading to the World Cup, and in total agreement with the preferences of the Technical Adviser. That is why we opted for England. We played Argentina (in November 2017) without even knowing we were going to be in the same group at the Finals.”

Three –time African champions, Nigeria came from two goals down to defeat two –time world champions and reigning world vice champions, Argentina 4-2 in that match in Krasnodar on 14th November 2017.

The Super Eagles already have a confirmed date with Poland in Warsaw on 23rd March. Other dates are 27th March and 27th May.

Fun Fact:

Fabregas could face Barca - the club where he received his football education - for the 4th time in his professional career next month.

He was in the Arsenal starting 11 against Barca in the first leg of the 2009/10 quarter finals. And he also played for the Gunners in both round of 16 legs against Barca in the 2010/11 season.

Well, since it is for local based players alone.... It promises to he very interesting because there will be no Oshoala, no Oparanozie, no Ordgea, no Okobi, no Ikidi, no Onome Ebi, etc..

But we got a stromg home-based contingent in the Super Falcons and I tip them to get the job done. Strongest opposition will be Ghana no doubt. Most of Ghana's players are homebased.

In our group, the Senegalese ladies will provide the keenest and sternest test for us but we will beat them.

It’s a strictly home-based tourney? I guess it’s mirrored after the men’s WAFU Cup.

Anyway, the team could be made up of the current Falconets and overage pros in the Nigeria women’s league. And I’d expect them to, at least, reach the final.

But I don’t expect an easy ride for the team because other African teams have caught up with the Super Falcons, as evidenced from the 2016 AWCON. Out of the five matches played by the SF, the team was outplayed in 3 of those - against Ghana, South Africa and Cameroon.

People banging on about club form lose sight of the fact that the status of the club a player plays for and/or his stats in a season do not correlate with his national team form.

For instance, Miroslav Klose was an absolute beast for Germany at 5 or 6 major tournaments. He even ended up being the record World Cup goal scorer of all time. However, I don’t think he ever scored up to 20 goals in a season. He never even showed up amongst the nominees for the Balon D’Or, or Bundesliga player of the season, let alone FIFA World Player of the Year.

Moreover, Julius Aghahowa is another example. The highest rated club this guy ever played for was Shakhtar Donetsk! But he he kept on scoring crucial goals for the Super Eagles. So, other factors clearly come into play (coach’s tactics etc) when judging whether a player is suitable for the national team.

Some key Qualification dates:

The Falconets will be away to South Africa on January 13th, and host the same South Africans on January 26th. The winner of this tie advances to the U-20 world cup to be hosted by France from August 5th - 24th.

The Flamingoes will tackle Cameroon in the last round of qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA U-17, on February 2nd and February 16th. The winners qualify for the world cup in Uruguay which runs from November 13 - December 1.

The Super Falcons will face either Burkina Faso or Gambia in the 2nd and last round of qualifiers for the 2018 CAF AWCON, in April.

Video replays to correct refereeing mistakes are set to be recommended for use at this summer's World Cup -- and everywhere else next season -- at a key meeting in Zurich on Jan. 22.

The five members of football's law-making body, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), are gathering at FIFA's headquarters in Switzerland for their annual business meeting. This meeting will set the agenda for IFAB's annual general meeting, which is where changes to football's laws are approved.

Football is arguably the last of the major global sports to fully embrace video technology but, having finally decided to trial video assistant referees (VARs) in 2016, the decision at IFAB's annual general meeting in Zurich on March 2 is now widely believed to be a formality.

Those trials have taken place in 15 national leagues, including the Bundesliga, Major League Soccer and Serie A, as well as several FIFA competitions, and their results have been analysed by Belgium's top university KU Leuven.

IFAB will publish the most recent data from the pilots in the week before the Jan. 22 meeting, and they are expected to show that decisions have been corrected once every three games and the average time taken on each review has been greatly reduced as officials have become more used to the system.

A spokesperson for IFAB told Press Association Sport these results will be discussed at the meeting and a vote will be held to provide an "indicative recommendation" to the AGM.

As a reflection of British football's role in the game's development, IFAB is comprised of the football associations of the four home nations, each with a single vote, and FIFA, which has four votes and the deciding vote in the result of a tie.

The Jan. 22 meeting will be chaired by FIFA's general secretary Fatma Samoura and attended by the chief executives of the English, Northern Irish, Scottish and Welsh FAs, as well as technical experts.

FIFA has made no secret of its desire to use VARs at Russia 2018 and has already, in its view, successfully trialled them at several age-group tournaments, two Club World Cups and last summer's World Cup dress rehearsal, the Confederations Cup.

The Irish Football Association (IFA) has already said it will be voting for VARs after Northern Ireland's World Cup hopes were ended when Corry Evans was wrongly adjudged to have handled the ball in November's play-off against Switzerland.

IFAB's plan for video reviews is that they are only used in four circumstances: to decide if goals should be awarded, penalty decisions, red-card incidents and rare cases of mistaken identity.
