After Obasanjo, Peter Odili was the strongest and most popular Politician from southern Nigeria and he was going to win the PDP Presidential Primaries in 2007 until Obasanjo threw the Yaradua joker.

After Odili failed to get the PDP Presidential ticket, it was taken for granted that he would be running mate to Yaradua but Obasanjo struck again and threw in the Jonathan joker by instructing Yaradua to announce Jonathan as his running mate.

That was the introduction of Jonathan to national politics, at which time Odili was already concluding his 8 years as Rivers governor.
