EducationRe: My Inability To Speak Fluent English Is Costing Me Huge Opportunities. by PerseDew(f):
Download the British Council Learn English app. Listen to one podcast everyday and practice mindful repetition 5x while looking at the words i.e. try your best to repeat what you hear exactly how you heard it. Repetition is best done after each sentence and after a about 6 - 8 months you can switch up to a paragraph or you repeat after hearing the whole text.

Activities like watching movies, listening to the radio and reading novels will help. But those things target mainly your comprehension and writing abiltities. To purposely target your speaking ability, you should speak and not without guide to avoid pronouncing things awkwardly. That is why you have to listen and repeat after the speaker mindfully.

Since English is your first or second language you should overcome whatsoever issue you have with speaking in a year or less.

Avoid unnecessary surgery. It is Chalazion and it will go on its own after a year or 2. Use a new white handkerchief to follow the aforementioned remedy of warm water compress. Although it may not work cos it's 2 months already. In my case it slightly reduced it after about a month of warm water compress and disappeared completely after almost 2 years. And in the case of eye drops, once it is finished and it is still there, don't go for another one. The best time to do those remedies is immediately you notice it.

Good thing you didn't take Augmentin an antibiotic as was prescribed by a Dr for me. If not for my mum that told me to go to another Dr instead of taking more antibiotics, I'd have continued to use a bomb to kill a fly like the later Dr said. He recommended the use once unit of eye drops and warm water compress.

In any event my issue with Nigerians and English is actually communication. I couldn't care less about such things on social media or the internet. I very often do not put an apostrophe on my "don't" or bother with punctuation when I am on social media. My biggest issue is the use of words, the understanding of those words and their meaning because without that we don't have communication. The purpose of language is to communicate!!!! When I say many Nigerian do not understand English, many do not seem to truly understand the meaning of the words they use, or the words you say to them. Use of words like "staffs" is annoying but I get used to it, what is really annoying is when I use a word as it is defined but someone interprets it differently, which happens very often, then we have a communication problem and thats why I say many Nigerians really do not understand English. many do not understand the meanings of English words they use everyday.

I gave the example of the word "viable" in an earlier communication. "Viable" simply means probability of success, but the guy interpreted it differently and thats a typical scenario with a Nigerian. But in reality, saying that something is "not viable" isnt ambiguous but it is only a Nigerian that reads a different meaning to "not viable". To everybody else it simply means low probability of success and not necessarily a verdict of the substance of the subject matter.
Communication problems is not peculiar to the Nigerian society. It exists everywhere. I once attended a work seminar on Communication where the host asked who is responsible for making sure what is said is understood, is it the speaker or the listener? I replied the speaker because I felt it is more of the job of the person speaking/giving orders to make sure what he/she said is understood.

One could argue it is the listener or both of them. I agree but the way I see it, I prefer to ask if what I said is understood (to explain further if need be) and or listen to the listener's reply to make sure he/she understands me as long as I know the listener has gotten to the age of reason.

And no, it is not only a Nigerian that would misconstrue the meaning of the word "viable".

We are discussing English, yet you use "indeed" twice in the same sentence.
It's a mistake that I have corrected. I did not bother to point out yours in your original post cos I saw them as mistakes. So even though you have made some corrections, you still have to go back and make a few corrections. For example: "Today Someone..." to "Today someone...".

Nigerians are actually very bad at english especially the new generation. Just read articles on Nairaland. A good example is the common use of the word "staffs" instead of "staff"

I have noticed that Ghanaians and south African countries Zambia, Tanzania etc have a better grasp of English than Nigerians. Dont assume when speaking to a young Nigerian that they actually understand what you are saying. Nigerians have a habit of hearing one word and construing another meaning to it. Today Someone was trolling me because he clearly did not understand the meaning of the word "viable".
Just to add that indeed your objectivity is in doubt for I see no reason why after someone did not understand the word "viable", you decided to add it to your list of "reasons". And also hearing/reading a sentence and misunderstanding it is a worldwide thing that can occur while hearing/reading in any language.

Furthermore, those countries you hyped are also not on the list. So in regards to the topic, it's a wonder why you bothered to hype their English.

You almost made sense till you claimed those nations' citizens speak and write better English than Nigerians...

The fact that you are even using Nairaland (a poor and untrue reflection of the academic state of Nigeria) further makes one wonder at your objectivity.

Do some research sir.... Educated Nigerians actually speak and write better English grammar than their counterparts in most countries, even the Overhyped English speaking European nations.
Thank you. This is similar to what I had in mind to write.

RomanceRe: Being In Love With Your Boyfriend's Friend, How Do You Kill The Feelings? by PerseDew(f):
That you are in a relationship with a great person that loves you and you also love this person, does not mean you can't be attracted to someone else. There are many theories why this happens. It is sometimes bewildering because on a normal day the person is not your spec nevertheless there is attraction between you two.

It is best to aknowledge the feeling first (because denying it only makes the attraction stronger), try to look at the situation with a logical mind and then craft out ways to avoid the being in the same space with the person. It could take a long time to kill feelings e.g up to a year or more. So your friend should be patient with herself.

In general it is the practice self control. It could start with small things like denying yourself ice cream, soft drinks or whatever it is you crave or like doing and then you'll see that you don't die from not satisfying yourself.

Ok..but I have seen one or two documentaries that shows the preference of English first names by the Chinese (ordinary citizens).

I too have stopped bearing my English name and I also have the same mindset towards child baptism or confirmation. I actually wanted an Igbo name for confirmation but cathecists and folks where just saying it's not possible but now I know better definitely not no English name for any sacrament. How can someone just tell me that someone's name is better than a name in my language cos of the live the person lived when I was not there to confirm. Still a catholic till tomorrow but some norms will definitely not fly for me again.

Just saying o, there is no need to be saying .... the baptism.

Not sure if this one is meaningless but I would like to make a few points and corrections . It is not just us and this name thing is somehow not sure if to describe it as a plague.

So the Chinese have been doing foreign first names for years that is why you see names like Donnie Yen, Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, Michelle Yeow and them plenty. I don't know about the Arabs i.e if they go for names in their ethnic language or not but I know in Africa a lot of people with Arabic names don't have names in their own ethnic language. Today lots of Germans bear English or French first names and German surnames.

I prefer names in my language or any ethnic group the person comes from. Even if the name is Biblical.
Christianity EtcRe: Pastor Eno: A Woman’s Role In Her Husband’s House Is To Increase His Wealth by PerseDew(f):
This is just gaslighting. It is simply the role of the couple to increase wealth and in a case where the woman willingly chose to man just the home front in agreement with the man (of which there is nothing wrong in that) or is forced to do so (everything is wrong here) it is the man's job.

Why can't they just use the same energy and preach on the role of the government in creating jobs and a favourable economy for its citizens? So that things can easily work out for everyone or at least the majority. Well they know if this country has favourable living and working conditions, they would struggle to get an audience.
EducationRe: Nigerian Students Amass Degrees To Stay In Europe by PerseDew(f):
edoman2016:
Why are Nigerians obsessed with certificates? Nigerians prefer to acquire masters degree than to learn technical skills and be self employed.
In an European country like Germany, 90% if not 100% of the technical skills are taught in the native language. I assume it will be case for other European countries (excluding England) that still have their languages integrated in their ecosystem as a country.

Furthermore, the route most people go to learn the language costs a lot e.g >150 or 200 euros for just A1. Now to be admitted in a training program which is 3 years you need at least B1, B2 or C1 in the language, depends on what you want to undergo training in and the levels are A1, A2, B1.1 ,B1.2, B2.1, B2.2...C2. One could achieve C1 in a year but in most cases it takes 2 - 3 or more years and someone on a 20hrs job or sometimes a mini job in Europe won't want to part with such money.

The easiest solution is to learn skills like web development or cloud computing e.t.c or be good in the tools for the informatics side of courses e.g big data with Azure tools, R or Python for Bioinformatics for those studying Management, Business or Biology.

Jobs/VacanciesRe: Recommend a Smart Online Skill To Learn Pls by PerseDew(f):
Someone on the front page said you can't learn anything from YouTube. That is a LIE. In this 2021 you can learn so much from YouTube that you would have no need for a certificate to get your first job.

You should google IT skills in 2020 or 2021. You will see a lot of things like web dev, data science, cloud computing etc. Take your time and find out what each one entails e.g try taking free courses for each one consistently for 2 weeks or more to really find which one best suits you before you settle for anyone of them. Pls note 2 weeks or more is because you would most likely be a beginner and would need time to really know what is going on in the subject before you can decide if you like it or not.

Take the free courses on Coursera. Make sure you chose one with high ratings. When you are done, type the search terms on YouTube and start learning. If you start a video and you think it is not fundamental enough change it. If the case remains the same, stop the video and search for free pdfs on the topic for beginners and read while you write out. Then go back to YouTube videos to speed up learning process. You could prefer to continue your study on Cousera. It depends on you.

Note that you have to give yourself time to learn at least 6 months of consistently learning and building projects as soon you are capable will definitely make a difference. Within another month or 2 you would be confident enough to apply for an entry level job presenting your portfolio of 2 to 4 projects as your experience.

Wow tumeric powder, buy tatashe not really a fan of that, back then my mum used to apply it but never been a fan of it
Just give it a try plus pepper and atagungun or is it atarodo (spelling may be wrong but it is slim and long). All combined and prepared as suggested by Pocahontas but with way less boiling time if I may add cos I don't wait to see it fragmented anymore before I add oil and other ingredients and just let it boil for a some mins. The result is a tasty naturally red stew. Only tomatoes can't give you that except you leave out just tatashe from the mix. That may still turn out fine. I guess part of the reason I use tatashe is cos it reduces the quantity of pepper and atarodo.

P.S
It would be good to buy tumeric from trusted sites e.g where you see it being grinded in the market or you buy dried tumeric and grind.

You could use tumeric to get that desired look you want for jollof rice while you use little fresh tomatoes and tatashe (preferred). Just use tumeric like curry but add a little more and unlike curry it barely adds another taste to the rice.
HealthRe: Would You Permit Your Partner To Be A Surrogate? by PerseDew(f): 2:09pm On Dec 14, 2020
There are grey areas to this just like your husband said. I also do not find fault in your thinking. Also in my opinion, it is not too different from organ transplant or blood transfusion. The later two procedures have been normalised and so no one bats an eye lid.

The one that I do not understand is being a sperm donor or egg donor (commercial ones). Like in a few years siblings could meet and get married without knowing they are siblings.

I understand all these procedures have a common aim of being pro life and giving happiness to those that desire a child or want to live and so can't say they are bad. The difference is just that being a surrogate is not yet a popular thing or norm in Nigeria.
HealthRe: I Easily Lose Consciousness If I Stay In The Sun by PerseDew(f):
No idea OP but my own is that the sun can be disorientating.

Let me use this opportunity to let Nigerians know that just because we are africans it does not man we should go out in the sun anyhow especially without suncreen even when in the abroad. The myth of the sun has no effect on africans in the body and on the skin is not true. Coming from the skin angle, the bad effects of sun on our skin has been taken as the norm that is why you will see a chocolate complexioned body but a face and neck like charcoal not to talk of those ones that are a much lighter shade with a face several shades darker. The fact that your friend or sibling does not get affected does not mean the case has to be same for you.

Some people will stay 1 hour straight under the sun and will comeback without a trace of sun tan while some will spend just 10 mins and they will look they've been farming since morning. So if you can, try to avoid the sun between 10 and 3 - 5 pm and incorporate long sleeves, hats, face caps in your everyday wear or use an umbrella. If you can find a good and matching suncreen use it. In years to come you will appreciate it.

There is no reason to drag Nigerian restaurants. This happens everywhere. It is not a new thing to order a delicacy that is not peculiar to a locality, region or country and get something else entirely especially when it is not prepared by the locals known for the delicacy.

It would have been a thing to drag if she got that from an Italian restaurant in Nigeria.

HealthRe: See Why You Should Not Trust Weight Loss Transformation Photos by PerseDew(f):
Some teas such as green tea and peppermint tea actually aid weight loss. Drinking them can help curb hunger and boost metabolism.

As for exercise, people should look into walking. Just walking everyday can still help you get in shape. The point of suggesting walking is that consistency is key. If you can't be consistent with exercises such as running just walk for about 20-30mins everyday.

In terms of diet, avoid fried foods, baked foods, bread, fast foods, soda, juice, energy drinks, indomie (just one pack is above 300 calories). Eat lots of vegetables along with carbs like rice and garri 70:30 ratio. Google healthy diet plans, don't skip breakfast, lunch or dinner, don't starve yourself, eat a healthy snack like banana or apple when you are hungry between meal times and stop eating after 6-7pm. Drink water.

If truly she has a good mind towards you and because she might have used up her slots for her own people, she herself would have advised you to cast your net else where since and not offer you this greek gift of slavery (on your part) that before you know it, you will lose hope in yourself and remain there thinking that is all you are good for.

TravelRe: Is It Really Difficult To Find A Life Partner In US Or Canada? by PerseDew(f): 5:25pm On Sep 08, 2020
I think Nigerians (esp ladies) abroad have a phobia for other races. I am not judging their fears especially when it's legit like not bathing, quitting marriage without notice, kids from such union may suffer from identity issues or you are just not attracted to other races but the ones that think they will disappoint their family or fear to be gossiped about in their circle abroad and be tagged as someone that is just chasing papers should think well if they meet someone that likes them and they like the person back plus he seems to be well grounded, takes his bath daily and it seems both of you can work on having children that embrace their biracial identities.

I say this because I think it looks some type of way when you keep looking for a Nigerian (some even travel to Nigeria/village) to marry without any good reason when the possiblity of your kids (that you will still raise in the abroad esp in countries with few africans) to marry someone they love from another race is really high and then you probably settled for someone that is not so into you or you don't really like but still married because he/she is Nigerian.
Christianity EtcRe: Father Oluoma: Ladies Virginity Is Not A Gift To Your Husbands by PerseDew(f):
Rev father di sound. In the issue of virginity, there is the glaring I don't care attitude lots of parents have despite claiming to be religious and full of morals. If not a parent should equally be concerned about girls in the neighbourhood and raise their sons to be virgins for their own good and for the good of others.

Gender and tradition issues is also why a family will not sponsor a girl that is studious and finished with 2.1 or even first class instead they prefer to sponsor her younger bro that is glaringly less studious or just has no buisness going abroad.

These are the kind of teachings that are supposed to given in the church but no it is only submission submission.

After much thought I decided to write to you.

Listen, speaking from a girl perspective... That street toasting is the most annoying thing ever.

Generally we see guys who do that as nuisance, that's why she decided to continue with her phone. Typically In a day an average Nigerian girl will get toasted by 5 guys, maybe even 10. (OK maybe I'm exaggerating) but my point is the figures are quite high.
And in our head ( or my head...) Any guy who sees me looking fine and start to do the usual, he is just being disrespectful because I believe he most have tried about 5 other girls before coming to rudely interrupt my day.

If you are in an environment that the mood calls for socialisation and you meet someone you like, you can try to make a conversation. But a random girl on the street that you don't know how stressful her day has been, you just come out of nowhere and rudely interrupt her like that. Come on.
Well this is your opinion but pls just speak for yourself..lots of beautiful relationships and marriages exist because a guy asked a girl out on the street.

webizone:
"And if a man dies, AND LEAVES NO SON, then the daughters gets the inheritance. And if he LEAVES NO DAUGHTERS, then it's shared amongst his brothers."

You deliberately left that part. But I am not against the daughters getting something though.
I did not do so with any malicous intent. Besides including it does not make a difference. The main point is that the daughters were penniless and God changed the laws, he did not tell them to pray for husbands or get jobs by working as maids or on someone's farm. I brought up the story not mainly to validate my opinion that women should be heirs but to point out the hypocrisy of men of God that tell women to pray in such situations and those that like to quote the bible when a woman wears trousers or uncovers her hair in church but won't see that part of the bible when the situation arises. I am not one that follows the bible word for word so even if the opposite happened and the daughters of Zelophehad got nothing I would still have had the same opinion.

Another thing is in your second sentence it says if he leaves no daughters, the sons should take everything does that not mean that daughters should get their share inheritances if present?
CultureRe: Supreme Court’s Decision On Female Inheritance Divides Igbos by PerseDew(f):
Good thing Ms Gladys took this matter to court. When it pains the most is when the daughter(s) have literally nothing in terms of a job or a business and you will see men like the king that was threatening chaos insisting on the lady getting nothing but they will be the first to flip out if she wears uncovers her hair in church or does not attend the town's women meeting. But why will she do so when she sees that her interests as a woman are not covered or what else is the essence of such meetings if not to protect your right as an indigene of the town and in turn ensure progressive growth of the town.

These same men that oppose judgement in favour of Ms. Gladys will start quoting bible when a woman does wears does not cover hair in church or wears trousers. But they can never see the part in the bible where God changed the laws of inheritance for the five daughters of Zelophehad to inherit their father's property. The same goes for igbo men of God that know about this issue of females inheriting nothing but would rather ignore and encourage penniless ladies to continue praying for jobs, husband or wealth to fall on her husband when her portion of inheritance could go a long way in changing her status.
Christianity EtcRe: Pastor Funke Adejumo: A Man Can Get Sex From Any Idiot (videos) by PerseDew(f):
A lot of the points are biased and contradictory. A man that sleeps around is not born again but a woman that does the same is an idiot and a prostitute. She should remember Rahab the temple prostitute from Jericho who helped the isrealite spies is an ancestor of Jesus Christ and Jesus himself never talked about prostitutes in such manner despite them being everywhere even around the temple (i.e temple prostitutes). They were not even his problem for one second which is evident in the way he ignored the people that brought forth an adultress/fornicator to be judged and stoned. The hypocrites in the form of saducees and pharisees were his problem. She should emulate him and condemn the modern hypocrites we have today instead there are plenty of them in the house of God.

The bible marriage are traditional marriages else where so I do not understand that.

Teaching that women should be working wives to avoid the mistakes their mothers made (that is the only mistake I can think of) when she knows full well that in our society a lot of men don't allow their wives to have carreers and that is the bigger problem.

The whole thing about respect, honour and the rest are in order but they are biased cos she also knows that these demands are not given by her or other pastors in equal measure to men.

Lots of women are already doing more than all she said but they get a cheating and ungrateful husband in return. I am waiting for the day that such teachings will center around men to appreciate, serenade and encourage their hardworking wives..but no these pastors seem to derive joy from giving only such teachings like the ones from this pastor.
