BusinessRe: I Need Advice On Daily Or Weekly Income Business I Can Do With N1.5m by Peterwins(m): 8:26pm On Jun 01, 2013
WESTERNCR: Please I seriously need advice on business I can do with N1.5m that can generate daily or weekly income for me. I need honest and direct advice please. God bless
Before you invest your N1.5M, simply split it into two parts of either N1M and 500K or 750K and 750K. - first (golden) rule of investment, do not put all your eggs (if you have more than one) in one basket.

Then invest each part separately in different investments/businesses/enterprises.

May I ask some questions?

Is the money a soft loan, from family/friends, or fully yours?

What are you presently doing? Self employed, employed or unemployed?

Do you have any skill? I guess we all do.

Do you reside in an urban, semi-urban or rural area?

Have you invested or done any business before?

Are you single or married?

These are just some questions that may inform any useful suggestions from me.

Cheers!!!
InvestmentRe: What is The Highest/biggest Unforseen Loss Or Expense You Have Incurred? by Peterwins(m): 10:24pm On May 30, 2013
YOLLANDA: I lost over 15 million in NSE in 2011. Very depressing and heartbreaking.
I can feel your pains. It really hurts. I wish you total recovery of all lost funds. The stock market burst was indeed a horror movie for those that lost substantial funds. I made some losses in the NSE as well but not more than one million. I also made a loss (just after the stock market burst) of over seven million naira in a failed business enterprise. Sometimes when I think about the losses, I often wish I had "deliberately" gone to the casino with the money instead...... really sad and painful.

However losses made can be regained. It is well.
InvestmentRe: Do You Have Shares In Okomu Start Off Loading Right Now. by Peterwins(m):
I don't know what you saw at Okomu Oil Plantation but part of this report:https://www.nairaland.com/1304509/presco-vs-okomu-oil-shares http://thenationonlineng.net/new/business/presco-vs-okomu-oil-same-weather-different-planters/

states,

".....Okomu Oil Palm, the older and the larger of the two companies,....."

However, it will be educative to have the unbiased views of other people that have visited both plantations. Also size may not necessarily equate to production capacity/actual output (though plausible in some cases) in modern day agricultural practices with the use of genetically modified methods in crop production.

This is a factual and candid response. When you point a finger (wrongly) at someone, your other (four) fingers point right back at you. Buhari should just calm down and stop disgracing/embarrassing himself politically. It should be discomforting for him to be reminded of all these issues by Reno. Buhari should play the role of an elder statesman rather than a myopic politician. Will he ever learn?

BusinessRe: Guaranty Trust Bank: More Branches Needed? by Peterwins(m): 5:25pm On May 23, 2013
Dis Guy: but those people could be sent to other tiny branches

if you enter the average Halifax or barclays, there are probably about 5-8 staffs in there- simple and straight forward
not all these bulky buildings with tiny car parks

and they should get reid of the car parks too! they are small and unsightly
Very correct. Some bank branches really do not need to be very big. The cost of setting up these mega branches could be used to set up more smaller (compact & cashless) branches to serve the need of their ever increasing customers.
BusinessRe: Guaranty Trust Bank: More Branches Needed? by Peterwins(m):
DeLaRue: I actually don't think they will rush into expanding their branch network. They have their model and stick firmly to it. They will continue to open new branches but in smaller numbers than the juggernaut that is First Bank. Zenith too is opening branches at break-neck speed.

Despite having the smallest network of branches among the top 6 banks in Nigeria, GTB is:

- The biggest bank in Nigeria
- The most profitable bank in Nigeria
- The most highly-rated (by foreign investors) bank in Nigeria
- One of the most efficient banking operations in Nigeria, though First Bank is fighting back.

I actually believe GTB's story is one of the most legendary in the history of Nigerian commerce. For GTB (and Zenith too) to start from nowhere and becoming more profitable than the juggernaut that was and still is First Bank is a remarkable story. When you think that First Bank is the Federal (and many state) government's bank of first choice, then GTB and Zenith's rise are even more impressive.

Up till today, I have successful (older) relatives who bank with other banks, but keep any money they can't afford to lose in First Bank, 'cause they believe, First Bank will be the last bank standing in the event of even a war!

When you think how GTB and Zenith have zoomed past previous giants like UBA, Union Bank, you know nothing is impossible.

Up till the mid-nineties UBA and Union Bank were so big! Though UBA is still large, it lags behind Zenith, First Bank, and GTB in many ways.
Good analysis. However there were very good banks in the past that were later ruined by bad management.

Sec pouposly force them to drop the price and gave a sweet reason for it. Go and check the price of presco that has a bigger plantation than okomu and nifor combine they are all in thesame line of business run by indians and european except nifor that is own by federal gov. My ANALYSIS MAY NOT BE ACCEPTED.
Even though your analysis may not be accepted, your raw observations are very helpful. Prior to the stock market burst of late 2008/ early 2009 undiscerning investors were purchasing stocks of "technically dead/under-performing companies" as a result of doctored financial reports that were heavily cooked, baked and even fried.

Thanks for your observations. I wish others that have visited their plantation can also give their objective opinion.

Thanks. I also hope their financial reports are not heavily doctored (misrepresented). I wish I can lay hold on their financial reports ASAP. I will look into it if I have the time. Once again, the SEC and the NSE should never allow any company to manipulate their stock price.

Please let us know what you saw at their plantation. It may help some discerning investors to take informed decisions. Stocks not driven by core fundamentals are likely to crash sooner or later.

Did the company experience a higher turnover than expected based on better output/demand, reduce its overheads based on efficient production, receive additional local or foreign investment, etc.

Well I guess their AGM will answer some of these questions and many more. The era of stock price manipulation should not return to the NSE.
PoliticsRe: ACN Condemns Declaration Of State of Emergency! by Peterwins(m): 4:31pm On May 15, 2013
Anyone who is president (inclusive of this ACN spokesman) at this crisis period in the north-east will take these measures that GEJ have taken, though over-due.

It's a military troop surge that is supposed to cordon off attacks from these terrorists using neighbouring countries such as Niger, Chad and Cameroun as launch pad for their brazen attacks. The troop surge is also expected to contain the insurgents within these states. Let's pray it works.

The problems of bad leadership over several years that have accumulated to this day cannot be placed on GEJ, though this should not be used as an excuse for slipshod leadership from him. He needs to toughen up. Even Obama did same when he ordered/authorised a troop surge in Afghanistan soon after he became president of the USA.

The real (long term) solution in my own opinion are these:
1. True federalism - state police, resource control, etc.

2. Effective Data Base - Every citizen and foreigners in Nigeria should be easily identifiable and effectively monitored by the government/security agencies.

3. Religious tolerance - very difficult to achieve when you consider that "religion is an opium" to people with closed minds.

4. Social welfare - the capitalist USA has social security. Why not Nigeria?

5. Compulsory basic education - I guess we already have this.

6. Free and Fair Elections - getting there I guess, with fewer court cases after the 2011 general elections compared to 2003 and 2007. Hope 2015 will be much better.

7. Counter Terrorism/Eliminate Sponsors of Terrorism (executive order) - the local sponsors of terrorism should be eliminated since their foreign/international sponsors are not within reach/our jurisdiction. Though this can be used to witch hunt (real and perceived) political enemies especially in Nigeria. The recent events in Nassarawa and other States comes to mind.

8. Border/Immigration control - Effective border/immigration control can prevent terrorists from easy access into Nigeria even though we are part of ECOWAS.

9. Others - terror alerts, ban of fanatical preaching for all religious organisations, new security measures such as the use of spy (lethal and non lethal) drones, retraining of all our security personnel and adequate compensation for them, etc.

I guess these measures will reduce corruption since I did not mention it.

WhyMe222: Thanks for your contribution. I know my wife will find this and I wasn't hiding it. We do frequent nairaland to keep abreast of happenings. Reading through all the comments with diverse opinion from people of different races and nationalities and most especially our fellow country men/women from different tribes will help draw a clearer picture of the quantum of her misdemeanor and cause her to take a deeper sober reflection.

I don't agree with you that this thread will cause a leak as I did not disclose vital statistics and keywords that can give us away. I had that at the back of my mind all through and I carefully avoided such details.
Good. Once again, if she has truly repented, then forgive her. It's very difficult (I know) but possible. Some people may consider you as a weakling (it doesn't matter) for forgiving and not divorcing her but I tell you the truth it's the best option IF she has sincerely repented. You will never regret the decision as she will love you for the rest of her life.

It is well.
FamilyRe: Broken & Dejected: Found Out Wife Is Having An Affair With A Family Friend. by Peterwins(m): 6:06pm On May 10, 2013
@OP. Your "unfaithful" wife may be reading this thread and already knows your thoughts and/or next line of actions.

It may sound strange but I believe you were not sensitive enough to know she was cheating on you before you read the email. Perhaps a weakness (or oversight) on your part. You need to work on it because of the next relationship in case you decide to divorce her and remarry. We all need to be sensitive to our partners and children's weaknesses in order to nip any untoward issue(s) in the bud. Hence the reason some husbands are very firm with issues concerning their immediate family.

The following steps/issues may be worth considering:
1. No excuse for infidelity on her part but what "if" she was "hypnotised" by your so called family friend/senior colleague. Some men can be very dangerous and/or diabolical.

2.Inform her parents. It is important they are put on notice. Ensure you do this one on one with them (her parents) in her presence.

3. Do a DNA test on your daughter irrespective of the fact of her resemblance to your mother.

4. Does she still work in the same office/company with the trespasser?

5. Do a complete health check-up for the entire family - yourself, your wife and daughter. Hope no STD was passed.

6. A temporal separation (less than 3 months) should suffice and the reasons undisclosed to your family and friends, though this may have already leaked as you have already gone viral on the internet.

7. The separation will allow you to take the most appropriate decision.

Having stated all these, I sincerely believe you should forgive her and do not divorce her if she really pleads for your forgiveness and shows sincere remorse.

All the best.

dayooye: ...In my own case 500,000 naira was transferred into my GTB account from a customer who wants to buy liberty reserve in bulk. i fufilled the liberty reserve order as soon as i got payment in my GTB account, after 4 days my GTB account was locked, i went to my branch to complain, on getting there they told me some fraudulent transaction came into my account, i explained what transpired btw me and the guy that made the transfer into my account to my account officer, they told me the owner of the account from where the funds came in denied making any such transfer from his account into mine, simply put, the guy that i have been talking to for days is not the real owner of the account, most likely they got hold of the real account owners online banking informations, how they did dat i dont know, then they transfer fund into another legit account in exchange for goods or services which would be rendered to them almost immediately....

Businesses (entrepreneurs) that receive/accept substantial amount via online payment without verifying/authenticating their customers id (especially new/unknown customers) should be wary from the above example and review their online payment policies with an "indemnity clause" ASAP with the help of a good lawyer. Identity theft is for real in Nigeria.

Online bank fraud is a global phenomenon and will continue to grow in Nigeria as a result of:
1. Customer Fraud - Account holder carries out a transaction and feigns ignorance.
2. Customer Negligence.
3. Customer Carelessness.
4. Customer ignorance - Most bank customers are just getting used to online banking.
5. Hackers.
6. Bank Fraud - Carried out by unscrupulous employees of the bank.
7. Management Fraud - illegal deductions of customers (account holders) funds with "tacit approval" from the bank's management for several unethical reasons. Ask Tony of UBA, Jim of Zenith, Akingbola of Intercontinental, Aig of Access and the others.
8. Social Media - Makes the jobs of 5 (hackers) above easier but can also remedy the problem when people share preventive measures on the internet. I will try and proffer some solutions.
9. Poor Internet Security - Some banks do not have a robust internet security on their online platforms.
10.Poor regulation - the CBN is yet to get a full grasp of what global financial integration means.

Funds (bank accounts) exposed to online banking are sitting ducks.
CareerRe: Stanbic IBTC Fires 250 Of Their Staff Nationwide by Peterwins(m):
Entrepreneurship is not for everyone. Some professionals are better-off being employees rather than being employers. However people should endeavour to be financially prudent and seek to develop their potentials so that they do not remain redundant if they (employees) are sacked/retrenched.

Some may get better jobs, while others may establish successful businesses. It's a question of vision and perseverance.

An example: In 1973, Bloomberg became a general partner at Salomon Brothers, a bulge-bracket Wall Street investment bank, where he headed equity trading and, later, systems development. In 1981, Salomon Brothers was bought[14] and Bloomberg was laid off from the investment bank and given a $10 million severance package.[15] Using this money, Bloomberg went on to set up a company named Innovative Market Systems. His business plan was based on the realization that Wall Street (and the financial community generally) was willing to pay for high quality business information, delivered as quickly as possible and in as many usable forms possible, via technology (e.g., graphs of highly specific trends).[16] In 1982, Merrill Lynch became the new company's first customer, installing 22 of the company's Market Master terminals and investing $30 million in the company. The company was renamed Bloomberg L.P. in 1987.[17] By 1990, it had installed 8,000 terminals.[18] Over the years, ancillary products including Bloomberg News, Bloomberg Message, and Bloomberg Tradebook were launched.[19]

As of 2012, the company had more than 310,000 terminals worldwide.[20] His company also has a radio network which currently has its flagship station as 1130 WBBR AM in New York City. He left the position of CEO to pursue a political career as the mayor of New York City. Bloomberg was replaced as CEO by Lex Fenwick.[21] The company is now led by president Daniel L. Doctoroff, a former deputy mayor under Bloomberg.[22] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Bloomberg

The founder of Fidson Healthcare (listed on the Nigeria Stock exchange) used his gratuity/severance package to establish the healthcare company simply producing paracetamol tablets before it grew to become a blue chip pharmaceutical company.

So many other positive (small, medium and large scale) examples abound.

InvestmentRe: Why Are Our Telecos Not Going Public? by Peterwins(m):
Starcomms was listed on the NSE as part of the exit strategy of the American investors. The investors made a kill while the shareholders (those that bought their IPO) suffered a loss of about 90% of their investments. The rest is history......

CDMA telecom companies such as Starcomms could not survive the cut-throat competition of their GSM counterpart. The figures from NCC showing a downward trend of CDMA subscribers attests to this fact.

Adenuga may not want GLO to be listed on the NSE for obvious reasons.

MTN is well funded by their parent company.

ETISALAT is also well funded. Ask Hakeem Bello-Osagie

AIRTEL (former Econet, V-mobile, Celtel, & other names it had) should have been listed long ago on the NSE since it was plagued by lack of sufficient funding by the initial core investors (owners), mismanagement and boardroom squabbles. I really don't know if they have resolved these issues.

VISAFONE could be listed on the NSE but may also suffer the same fate as Starcomms listing on the NSE.

ZOOM MOBILE (do they still exist?), MULTILINKS and others barely exist in the face of stiff competition by GSM telecom providers.
InvestmentRe: Are Nigerian Stock Market Reports And Earnings Real? by Peterwins(m): 10:24pm On Apr 11, 2013
The NSE is very real. I lost funds in the market crash of 2008/2009 but that have not made me pessimistic about the stock market. It is still a veritable source of creating, storing and transferring wealth despite the numerous challenges like "doctored" reports, corporate governance issues, unstable government policies, etc.

You must be prepared to go to Lagos where the big ad agencies that handle multi-national companies (blue chips) have their offices.
I think Prima Garnet have the Unilever account. You must be very confident when you approach these big ad agencies and don't take no for an answer even if you get a negative response from any of them.

Prima Garnet
Plot 117 Aina George Street,
Ilupeju
Lagos.

Visit other big ad agencies in Lagos such as SOU Saatchi & Saatchi, LTC (I don't know if LTC still exists), Lintas, etc. You might even get immediate employment if they are impressed with your ad proposals. cheers!!!

1 - to make my money grow and retain its value

A generic answer. You need to be specific to measure your level of success or failure. How do you know when you attain (achieve) your investment goals and objectives. Your investment goals and objectives must be measurable.

2 - employed

Good. You do not need your investments to take care of your basic (daily) needs. Consider medium to long term investments.

3 - single. no kids yet. 27

Freedom and less responsibility. Consider investment in equities (stocks), though less safer than fixed income investments (bonds, treasury bills, etc). A young person should not be afraid of taking "calculated" risks but please do not invest in Ponzi/Pyramid schemes. Get a reliable and reputable stock broking firm to start your investments in the Nigeria Stock Exchange (market). Furthermore do not invest in only one sub sector (industry) of the NSE. Split (diversify) your investments in the NSE into at least four (4) sub-sectors of your choice like:

a)Financial services (banking stocks). GTB, FBN Holdings, Stanbic IBTC Holdings are my recommended stocks to start with for now as a starter. Others are okay but start with these for now.

b) Household products. Unilever and PZ stocks.

c) Healthcare. Glaxo Smithkline stocks.

d) Food products. Cadbury stocks. Nestle is also a good stock but too high for now.

Capital gain, dividends, bonuses and liquidity are some of the advantages of investing in equities (stocks). By the time you are 40 (in 13 years time) your consistent and wise investments in the NSE could make you a multi-millionaire. Remember you can use your investments in the NSE to create, store and transfer wealth.

4 - not an extremist.

Alright. In addition to (3) above, you can purchase Guinness Nig and Nig. Breweries stocks.

5 - very liquid

Then consider monthly fixed deposit with low yield (interest) of less than 10% per annun. Your over 400k "investment" at the bank was very liquid. However you can consider Treasury Bills : https://www.nairaland.com/878880/treasury-bills-nigeria

6 - monthly

Consider monthly fixed deposit or treasury bills.

7 - monthly

Consider monthly fixed deposit or treasury bills.

8 - 20 - 30%

FGN bonds can get you about 16% per annun but it is a long term investment.

10 - very safe

Try fixed deposit, treasury bills or FGN bonds.

11 - only at weekends

Use your weekends to learn additional financial and business (entrepreneurial) skills.

12 - very healthy

Health is wealth. Continue to adopt a healthy lifestyle to enjoy the dividends of your investment.

manie: Nice,

I am sure you work for an Investment advisory firm, or you are into Asset management.
I was in the financial industry (banking and non-banking) for several years but still a keen observer in local and international finance. If most people know (realise) the "real" undercurrents (trade secrets) of finance/business/investment they will probably make less mistakes in their respective investment decisions.

Over the years I realised there was (are) majorly two classes of investors namely the objective ones (those who could confidently answer rightly or wrongly most of my questions posed above) or the subjective ones (often emotional investors) who just want to make investments (grow their money/wealth) without clearly defined investment goals and objectives.
InvestmentRe: Stock Performance From 2000/2003 To Date by Peterwins(m):

You just got about 4% (per annun) on your investment of 400k for six months. Was it a fixed deposit, call deposit or just a savings account? At an inflation rate hovering around 9.5% in Nigeria you have a negative return of 5.5% on your 400k investment.

Yes you can do better with other options depending on your investment goals and objectives. However beware of Ponzi/Pyramid schemes in various disguise (forms) in Nigeria these days. It is better you continue with your 4% "investment" at the bank than to lose it to financial scams.

You need to answer some of the following questions:

1. What are your investment goals and objectives?

2. Are you presently unemployed, under-employed, employed or self-employed?

3. Are you single or married with or without kid(s)? Surprised!!! Marital status (including age) plays a role in risk analysis.

4. How religious are you? Surprised again!!!! Ask the proponents of ethical or sharia banking and investments.

5. How liquid (ability to turn part or all of your investment to cash at any given time) do you want your investment to be.

6. Tenure. How long do you want to invest? Daily, monthly, quarterly, yearly on a short, medium or long term.

7. Cash Flow. How often do you want your return (interest/profit/income) on your investment? Daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly.

8. Return on investment. How much (%) do you expect from your investment during its lifetime (tenure).

9. Capital Gain/Loss. The real (or net) value of your investment may appreciate or depreciate over the period (tenure) of your investment as a result of inflation, deflation, etc.

10. Security. How secure (safe) do you want your investment?

11. Personal Supervision. Do you have the time to personally watch over your investments? Some investments require personal supervision. Alternatively you could pay a "professional" to supervise your investments on your behalf.

12. What is your health status? Wondering why!!! Some initially good investments gone bad have sent some people to their early graves or develop health complications such as hypertension. Do you realise some (but a few) Nigerians (investors) died or developed hypertension as a result of the stock market crash (bust) in 2008/2009.

13. An unlucky number in some cultures or belief system. So let me stop here for now. I guess the questions (or comments) are getting too much.

These questions (or comments) may seem too much but are quite important if you want to become an objective investor (in any field) rather than a subjective one.

These are just my personal opinion (views) and comments. Cheers!!!

Yes. A very rare feat (for an individual investor) on stocks like Nestle, PZ Cussons, Cadbury(on technical suspension at a time), Unilever, etc in 2007.

The acquisition (purchase) of 3 million shares of these stocks by an individual investor on the floor of the exchange in less than "ten (10) working/trading days in 2007" is rather misleading but possible with bank stocks.

At a point in time (over a long period) the quantity (inclusive of the no. of deals) of bank stocks traded where over 70% of the overall quantities traded on the NSE.

I have no qualms with your claims (prowess) but I seek a more balanced (truly professional) approach to certain issues or discussions especially because of naive investors.

manie: Who are your stock brokers? I will advice you to sack them and move over to mine. I use stock brokers that controls 60% of the trade on the exchange.

I stand to be corrected 3 million units of NB be shares can be bought within maximum of 10 trading days in 2007. Do not forget that the stocks that were never available in 2006 to 2008 were the banking and insurance stocks.

A lot of gullible investors sold their blue chip stocks like NB, Guinness, Unilever, PZ, Total< Flour Mill to invest in Private Placements between 2006 and 2008. That was why these stocks had attractive PE ratios because they were on offer.

Please name your brokers that controls 60% of trade on the exchange and I will tell you how they (infact every investor) also lost not less than 60% of their investments in mid/late 2008 and 2009. The NSE lost about N7 trillion then. From an average market capitalisation of over N12 trillion to an average market capitalisation of about N5.5 trillion.

I stand to be corrected 3 million units of NB be shares can be bought within maximum of 10 trading days in 2007.

I wish this was a statement of fact rather than fiction in 2007. Perhaps by institutional investors such as mutual fund managers.

Do not forget that the stocks that were never available in 2006 to 2008 were the banking and insurance stocks.

Another half truth. The banking stocks where readily available (banking consolidation era), while the insurance stocks (penny stocks like Guinea Insurance, Mutual Benefit Insurance, etc ) where not.

A lot of gullible investors sold their blue chip stocks like NB, Guinness, Unilever, PZ, Total< Flour Mill to invest in Private Placements between 2006 and 2008. That was why these stocks had attractive PE ratios because they were on offer.

Gullible investors? Really!!! I rather not use the word gullible but misinformed (ill advised) investors who where misled by their biased "professional" advisers who claimed to know the "market" more than the "market woman".

Talk is cheap but right (proper) information is power.

manie: NB fluctuated between N35 and N40 in 2007, 1 million dollars was 120 million Naira in 2007. NB is one of the liquid stocks on the exchange having NB shares is as good as having cash. Over 2 million units of NB shares were sold yesterday.

I used to be a margin trader when the market was good, when you want to buy units of shares running into million of units you buy the shares over a period of days taking into consideration the bid and offer for the stock.
"Over 2 million units of NB shares were sold yesterday" is an incomplete information in the context of my comment/query. I would have sincerely appreciated it if you had completed the statement by stating the number of deals that transpired in order to properly inform naive investors . It may surprise you to know that those that bought 100,000 units and above in a single deal in yesterday's transaction where institutional investors. Most individual investors don't get a chance to purchase these stocks in large quantities even with available cash. You may be lucky to get even 10,000 units.

I was a bit miffed when you said you could have purchased 3,000,000 units of NB shares in 2007 as if the quantity of the stock was readily available to individual investors. If you had mentioned bank/insurance stocks I would have agreed with you because they were in abundant supply in 2007.

The daily average quantities of tradeable stocks like Nestle, Cadbury, Guinness,Unilever, etc are quite limited compared to financial industry stocks. This can easily and readily confirmed. The financial sub-sector have the highest quantity of tradeable stocks in the NSE.

It would have taken you several months (if not over a year) to have purchased 3,000,000 units of NB shares as an individual investor in 2007. You would have needed to purchase an average of 250,000 units of NB shares a month for 12 consecutive months in 2007 to acquire 3 million units. A rare stunt for an individual investor back then.

There is a need for proper information.
